Fox Interview With Pro-Gun Rights Newtown Parent Mark Mattioli
Megyn Kelly invited another Newtown parent who lost a child last December on her Fox News show to explain why he opposes stricter gun control measures. While in many ways equally emotionally wrenching, Kelly's interview with Mark Mattioli sent a very different message to lawmakers.
As evidenced by her reaction to clips from the 60 Minutes program last week during her tough grilling of the NRA's Wayne LaPierre, as well the new footage shown today, Kelly has been clearly moved by the majority of the Newtown parents who want the government to do everything it can to prevent another, similar tragedy. At one point she told Mattioli, "It's hard when you look at the grieving parents, including yourself, who are asking you to do something, to not do it."
But it was also clear that she was equally taken with Mattioli, who told her, through tears, that despite the fact that he's "broken, devastated, drowning in grief" he feels "compelled to participate in this debate, because I'm not hearing a voice that's really agreeing with me."
Mattioli went on to say that he believes that "tens of millions of people out there who agree that gun control isn't necessarily the solution" to preventing another Newtown massacre. Echoing remarks made by LaPierre and other NRA spokespeople, he described the new gun laws as presenting a "false premise," which would only "work for people who abide by the laws." He added, "criminals who conduct most of the gun crime don't care about the law."
Just as she pushed LaPierre to acknowledge the concrete point made by the Newtown parents who believe that eleven children were saved when the shooter was forced to reload, Kelly pressed Mattioli to explain why he doesn't believe limiting magazines could help reduce the number of people potential shooters can kill. Mattioli once again dismissed this theory as a "false premise" given the millions of high-capacity magazine that already exist. "Why should I be hampered in protecting myself, when someone could come to my home and outgun me?" he asked.
Also, unlike the Newtown parents interviewed on 60 Minutes, Mattioli admitted that he does put some blame on Nancy Lanza, the mother of the shooter who killed his son. "I do hold her accountable," he said. "There's a massive failure in parenting and things could have gone so much better if she had been a responsible parent."
The interview took an even more devastating turn when Kelly played clips from 60 Minutes of Mattioli's fellow parents describing what it was like to discover that their children were among those who did not make it out of Sandy Hook Elementary School alive. Holding back sobs, Mattioli told Kelly, "the enormity of this loss is just starting to reveal itself. An Easter egg hunt, a trip to the dentist... I had a plan for how to make this world better. My son was a big part of that plan.

Newtown Parent Mark Mattioli Says Magazine Limits Won't Work Without 'Confiscation
On the heels of CBS News' gut-wrenching interview of seven Newtown families on 60 Minutes, Fox News interviewed pro-gun parent Mark Mattioli, whose son James was killed in the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Megyn Kelly's full interview with Mattioli is similarly heartrending, but there were also some uniquely revealing moments in the apparent first interview of a pro-gun Newtown parent. Asked about banning extended magazines, Mr. Mattioli argued that there are too many in circulation to do any good, without confiscating the existing ones, and offered one of the few affirmative defenses of the magazines that I've heard.
Some of what Mr. Mattioli said had the familiar ring of NRA boilerplate, but with the moral authority of a grieving parent that makes it impossible to dismiss with a sneer and a muttering of "gun nut." For example, Mark Mattioli told Megyn Kelly that gun regulation is "a false premise," because gun control works for people who abide by the laws. Criminals who conduct most of the gun crime don't care about the law. they won't look up the Connecticut law to see how many guns, how many bullets have to be in the magazine that they're supposed to register with the state police at some point in the future, once they come up with a blueprint for how to administer that."
Normally, this argument simply reeks of bad faith, but coming from someone like Mark Mattioli, it's obvious that there are people who sincerely believe this fundamental misunderstanding of how laws work. There are no laws designed to eliminate all crime via voluntary surrender. We don't make laws against heroin because we think criminals will look up that law and surrender their drugs, we do it so that when the police do catch someone with heroin, they can take it away from them before it kills someone.
Similarly, if extended magazines are federally banned the way they now are in Connecticut, those already in circulation would need to be registered by the law's effective date. After that, with no new magazines being sold and manufactured, police could take them away from people who weren't supposed to have them, eventually reducing the supply to those who had lawfully registered them.
We also make laws to adjust the behavior of law-abiding citizens. Regardless of the supply in circulation, there's every indication that Nancy Lanza was a law-abiding citizen, and would not have sought banned magazines for her weapons. As the Newtown parents in that 60 Minutes interview pointed out, smaller magazines could have provided more opportunities for children to escape, as 11 of them did on December 14 when the shooter was reloading.
Megyn Kelly asked Mattioli about that possibility. "All right, so, again," Mattioli replied, "false premise in that they're not talking about confiscating the magazines, they're out there. If we were starting out at point a and there were no magazines, but we're not talking about that. There are millions, tens of millions out there, and criminals aren't going to hand them back."
This is the circular nature of the NRA's argument in a nutshell, the Catch .223; they have constructed a political environment in which they lobby against any and all regulation, then when a compromise is offered, they argue that the proposed law isn't strict enough to do any good. It's true, a ban on high-capacity magazines would work best if all non-registered magazines were confiscated immediately, but even without that, as I explained earlier, police would be able to take them away from people as they encountered them, hopefully before they're used to kill people.
But unlike most pro-gun advocates, who simply argue they should have the extended mags because they believe they have the right to, Mark Mattioli actually offers an answer to the question that fellow Newtown father Neil Heslin asked several months ago: why anyone needs these weapons and magazines.
"Why should I be hampered in protecting myself when someone could come to my home and outgun me?" Mattioli told Kelly. "Should I feel safer because New York criminals will only be loading seven bullets in their 15 round magazines? I don't think so."

Newtown clergy plant crosses for gun control
More than 3,000 symbolic grave markers were placed in front of the US Congress in Washington D.C. on Thursday. They're meant to represent the number of people killed in gun violence since the mass-shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, last December. Leaders from several religions, some of them from Newtown, began a 24-hour vigil to call for the Senate to pass stricter gun control laws.Duration: 01:07

Newtown Parent Blasts Glee For Airing School Shooting Episode Without Contacting Families
4/12/13 - Appearing on CNN this morning, a Newtown parent lamented Fox's decision to air a school shooting episode of Glee without first notifying the community rocked by the elementary school massacre last December. Spoiler alert: The episode, which aired Thursday night, contained tense scenes of a gun firing at the fictional William McKinley High School, and students hiding and grappling with the fear of death and potentially never seeing their families again.
Speaking with CNN's Carol Costello, Newtown resident Andrew Paley explained that many of the town's parents are upset with the show for not notifying them that this episode would be airing so soon after the assault that left 20 children and six school staffers dead.
Paley praised Fox for airing a content warning at the beginning of the episode, but told Costello that it wasn't enough to make up for the actual content of the show airing while the wounds are still fresh for many of the community's families. During the episode's airing, Twitter users slammed the show for being "insensitive" and "inconsiderate."
The Newtown Action Alliance posted a message on the group's Facebook page Thursday warning members about the episode, but as Paley told the press yesterday, "I think it's terrible that the writers and producers of that show didn't think to contact someone in Newtown to let us know this was coming."

I was going to just leave this whole SHH alone but this thing just seems to be getting more and more interesting as subsequent developments take shape. Again, thanx to all the good folks who are still researching this and bring to the fore some very good insights.
