Great Central Railway "The Big One" Winter Steam Gala Jan 2012
The title for the Great Central Railway's winter steam gala was "The Big One" - advertised as "probably their biggest ever gala with 10 locos in action"
Filmed on the afternoon of Friday 27th and Saturday morning 28th January, primarily around Loughborough and Quorn; featured locos are :-
Drummond M7 30053 (running as 53) - 1st visit of this class to GCR
63601 celebrating 100th birthday
46521 newly overhauled
30777 Sir Lamiel
70013 Oliver Cromwell
8624 78019 47406 1744
4953 Pitchford Hall
Cold and sunny conditions provided some great exhausts, with the only shot in poor weather being the M7 at Woodthorpe on the last departure on Friday.
Good to see Austin and Pam again
Don't think I've ever seen so many linesiders at a gala, and the trains I travelled on / filmed were very busy.
Thanks to all involved with the gala and thanks for viewing.

6023 - Photo Charter Great Central Railway - 25.3.13
Another in the series of photo charters involving 6023 'King Edward II' at the Great Central Railway took place on 25th.March, this time organised by 3P20 Parcels Group. Just as on my last visit to the GCR in January, snow covered the line and surrounding fields, hard to believe British Summer Time is nearly upon us! The days weather forecast promised plenty of sunny intervals but we all know not to trust the forecasts and so it proved, with frustrating moments when the clouds parted slightly and the train was called forward, only for it to cloud over during the runpast. These scenes were filmed at Woodthorpe, Kinchley Lane, Rabbit Bridge and Swithland with the train carrying two different reporting codes and a Cornish Riviera headboard during the afternoon session. Thanks to Richard Newton, 3P20 Parcels Group and all involved at the GCR with the operation of the charter

Great Central Railway - Winter Steam Gala 2013
It's probably true to say that the GCR's Winter Gala was about one engine, the return after repairs at Loughborough, of Great Western King class no.6023 'King Edward II'. The loco looked resplendant in BR blue livery and it is to be hoped that she will now enjoy a long trouble free period of running. She was joined by visiting GWR 2-8-0 no.3803 from the South Devon Railway and members of the home fleet. I visited the gala on Friday 25th. and Saturday 26th. January 2013 and the following scenes are included in the video;
6023 'King Edward II' - Charnwood Water, Woodthorpe, Quorn Straight, Quorn and Kinchley Lane (being 'bowled' by 48624!)
GWR no. 3803 - Charnwood Water, Woodthorpe, Quorn Straight, Quorn and Swithland
LMS 8F no.48624 - Woodthorpe and Quorn Straight
SR no.777 'Sir Lamiel' - Quorn and KInchley Lane
Ivatt Class2 no.46521 - Kinchley Lane
BR Mogul no.78019 - Quorn Straight, Quorn and Kinchley Lane
LMS 'Jinty' no.47406 leaving Quorn, north and southbound and Kinchley Lane
GNR N2 no.1744 - Quorn Straight and KInchley Lane
Full credit to the railways staff and volunteers for another fine gala especially given the difficult icy conditions of the Friday morning

Great Central Railway Winter Steam Gala 2013 HD
A superb line up of steam locomotives in action on passenger, mixed goods, TPO, and light engine workings at the Great Central Railway on their Winter Steam Gala. We start off just south of Loughborough at Woodthorpe for the first trains of the day, then move to Kinchley Lane for the lunchtime workings, before finishing at Quorn & Woodhouse station. The weather was rather windy to say the least, but there were some nice sunny spells between the cloud, although the final shot was taken in horizontal rain! All filmed on Sunday 27th January 2013.

Great Central Railway 'Winter Steam Gala' - Saturday 26th January 2013
The Great Central Railway's annual Winter Steam Gala was my first railway visit of the year (The first steam I saw of the year was Hall Class 5972 'Olton Hall' passing through Leeds back to Carnforth on the 16th January) and this year saw a blanket of snow providing a nice wintery backdrop to an impressive 8 locomotive line up made up of 7 resident engines along with 2 guests making a 9 loco line up. The usual mixture of passenger, freight and TPO runs ran to an intensive timetable thanks to the resignalling of Swithland Sidings near Rothley which was finished last year.
The line up saw the first moves of the Didcot Railway Centre'sGreat Western Society's largrest and most powerful locomotive,The superly BR Blue liveried King Class 6023 'King Edward II' which had been under heavy repairs at the GCR's workshops since last autumn. The loco operated passenger services through-out the day at the request of its owners. The full line up was;
|GWR King (6000) Class 6023 'King Edward II' (From Didcot Railway Centre/GWS)
|GWR 2884 Class 3803 (From the South Devon Railway)
|SR 'King Arthur' Class 777 'Sir Lamiel'
|GNR N2 Class 1744
|LMS 3f 'Jinty' Class 47406
|LMS 8f Class 48624
|BR built Ivatt 2MT Class 46521
|BR Standard 2MT Class 78019
|BR Class 101 DMU.
Although the Snow and Sun provided a superb backdrop for many visitors shots on this day of the event, it was rather windy as you can see in a few of my shots. However this did not ruin the day and I can safely say I had one of my best days out yet at this gala and can't wait to visit the line again this year.
Shots in this video:
- 6023 'King Edward II' stands at Loughborough ready to begin its day of service
- 46521 departs Quorn and Woodhouse with the local to Rothley
- 48624 pulls into Quorn with the return local as 6023 'King Edward II' departs for Leicester North with a mixed train of LNER teaks and BR Mk1s
- 3803 passes through Quorn with the Windcutter wagons
- 78019 blasts through Quorn on a TPO demonstration
- 777 'Sir Lamiel' leaves Rothley for Leicester North
- 47406 arrives into Rothley with the short mixed goods
- 1744 heads the mixed goods back to Loughborough
- 78019 and 46521 top and tail the local into Rothley
- 6023 'King Edward II' restarts its arrival into Rothley after being stopped at the signal
- 3803 steams through Rothley on the Windcutters
- 777 'Sir Lamiel' heads through Quorn with a TPO demonstration
- 6023 'King Edward II' arrives into Quorn with a Leicester train
- The DMU waits to enter Loughborough station as 3803 heads a passenger train away from the station to Leicester North at Charnwood Water.
Hope you enjoy this video.

The Great Central Railway begin the year with their popular Winter Steam Gala and this year would see the return of 6023 King Edward II AKA The Blue King. After been sidelined with numerous mechanical issues and political rows the King was ready to finally haul passengers and alongside with visiting loco GWR 3803 and the GCR home fleet the event lived up to it's name and with enthusiasts flocking from miles to see the return of an Icon . The Great Central Railway- 'Golden Opportunities' Mini Gala- 23rd February 2013
After the record- breaking Winter Steam Gala back in January, the Great Central Railway held a 'Mini Gala,' using the two visiting engines and one from the NRM/ home fleet. A 45 minute timetable was in operation, as well as a lunch time diner train. In service were:
-GWR 60xx 'King' Class 4-6-0 No. 6023 "King Edward II" (from the GWS and Didcot Railway Centre)
-GWR 2884 Class 2-8-0 No. 3803 (from the South Devon Railway)
-BR (LMS) Ivatt 2MT 2-6-0 No. 46521 (Running as a substitute for the failed "Sir Lamiel")
-BR Class 37 Co - Co No. 37 198 (Running as a substitute for the failed "Sir Lamiel")
SR N15 Class 4-6-0 No. (30)777 "Sir Lamiel," (from the NRM but based at the GCR) was scheduled to run at the event as a farewell before it leaves for the mainline and the Mid- Hants Railway Gala next week, but unfortunately failed on the morning of the event, and, because of this, the BR Class 37 and the Ivatt 2MT substituted, with the 'King' running on the Dining Train instead of "Sir Lamiel" and the Class 37 taking one of the 'King's' duties, before the Ivatt took over and the GWR double -- header commenced.

Great Central Railway - 'Golden Opportunities Weekend' - 24/02/13
Another visit to the Great Central Railway, this time during their 'Golden Opportunities Weekend' which is sort of like a mini gala. It's the first time I've visited the GCR for something other than one of their big galas so there were much less people around, which makes a nice change. Three locos would be in service to haul 10 round trips (12 on Saturday), two locos would face Leicester and one would be turned to face Loughborough. Throughout the day the weather was rather glum with grey cloud, freezing temperatures and occasional very light snow.
Locos in service were:
- GWR 6000 'King' Class 4-6-0 no.6023 'King Edward II'
- GWR 2884 Class 2-8-0 no.3803 (Making her last runs before leaving the line)
- LMS Ivatt 2MT Class 2-6-0 no.46521 (Replacing 777 'Sir Lamiel' who had failed the previous day)
Shots by location are:
Loughborough:
- 3803 & 6023 shunting onto their respective trains.
- 6023 making a dramatic departure on the 10:00 to Leicester, passing 3803 waiting to move her stock into the station to form the 10:45 departure.
Charnwood Water:
- 3803 passes by with the 10:45 to Leicester (Apologies for the slight jerk in the zoom, the cold weather was getting to my fingers!)
Woodthorpe:
- 6023 on the 11:30 to Leicester.
Quorn & Woodhouse:
- 3803 departs on the 11:30 to Loughborough.
- 46521 departs light engine to Loughborough after bring turned.
- 6023 arrives then barks out on the 13:00 to Leicester whilst 3803 can be heard arriving with the 13:00 to Loughborough.
Rothley:
- 6023 makes a noisy departure with the 13:40 to Loughborough (Had to cut this shot off early as I wanted to get the signals going back down, they went down as I zoomed into them!)
- 3803 approaches on the 14:15 to Leicester then opens up once she has the right of way to bring her train into the station.
- 46521 arrives the storms out on the 14:15 to Loughborough, sporting a 'The Elizabethan' headboard.
Kinchley Lane:
- 3803 runs past on the 15:00 to Loughborough.
- 6023 makes a slow pass on the 15:00 to Leicester (I've been informed the slow pass was because of a gauging issue with the next bridge over, can anyone confirm this?)
- 6023 returns on the 15:45 to Loughborough, running a good 35+ minutes late!
- 46521 strolls on past with the 16:30 to Loughborough.
- 3803 runs past on the 16:30 to Leicester (This run was supposed to be a double header with 3803 & 6023, but because 6023 was so late getting back to Loughborough they decided 3803 would just do it alone. A shame as I was looking forward to the double header)
Filmed on a Panasonic HDC-HS900 with a Pro Sound L92AA microphone.

Great Central Railway 'Winter Steam Gala' - Saturday 26th January 2013
My second railway visit of 2013 and my first experience of steam in the snow! Over the weekend of Saturday 26th & Sunday 27th January 2013 saw the Great Central Railway run their annual Winter Steam Gala with the usual highlights of passenger, freight, mineral trains and TPO demonstrations to an intensive timetable due to the completion of the Swithland Sidings. This year's gala sought out a very special guest. The gala was to feature the first moves and passenger runs of GWR King Class 6023 'King Edward II' which had been based at the locomotive works at Loughborough for repairs. Alongside 6023 the second guest was South Devon resident GWR 2884 3803 which had been based at the Battlefield Railway for the previous 2 years. Alongside the 2 guest locomotives the GCR ran 6 of their home fleet locomotives giving an impressive 8 locomotive in steam for the gala.
The Full locomotive line up -
|GWR King (6000) Class 6023 'King Edward II' (From Didcot Railway Centre/GWS)
|GWR 2884 Class 3803 (From the South Devon Railway)
|SR 'King Arthur' Class 777 'Sir Lamiel'
|GNR N2 Class 1744

|LMS 8f Class 48624
|BR built Ivatt 2MT Class 46521
|BR Standard 2MT Class 78019
|BR Class 101 DMU.
Probably one of the best galas I've experienced with a full day of sunshine and snow which certainly put a sparkle in the day's activities. Enjoy!

Great Central Railway - Winter Steam Gala 2013: 'Debut of the King!'
Following major repairs to the boiler and firebox at Loughborough shed on the Great Central Railway, BR Blue liveried 6023 King Edward II returned to steam at the Great Central Railway's Winter Steam Gala. The King only passed its steam test on the Thursday, the day before the gala event. An impromptu light engine test run to Leicester was the only run that the King had before the weekend.
I originally planned to visit the GCR on the Saturday, much like the last 2 years. Unfortunately, the forecast of heavy snow and icy roads scuppered those plans. Instead, we decided to visit on the Sunday. Overnight, heavy rain washed away the snow that had laid, and when we arrived into Leicestershire at about 9am, the snow had given way to severe flooding in the Mountsorrel and Rothley areas.
Back to the action - the locomotives featured in this film are:
Ex-GWR 6000 King Class 6023 King Edward II: Loughborough, Woodthorpe, Quorn, Kinchley Lane and approaching Leicester
GWR 2884 class 2-8-0 3803: Loughborough, Quorn and Kinchley Lane (with the Windcutters)
SR N15 (King Arthur) class 777 Sir Lamiel: Quorn (x2, once with the TPO) and Kinchley Lane
Ex-LMS Class 2 2-6-0 46521: Woodthorpe and Quorn (TPO)
BR Standard 2MT 2-6-0 78019: Tender-first at Quorn with a short freight, light engine at Quorn and on the turntable
GNR N2 class 0-6-2 1744: Quorn and Kinchley Lane
Ex-LMS 'Jinty' 0-6-0 47406: Quorn (x3, once with the Windcutters, once light engine and two shots T/F* with the local passenger set)
LMS 8F Class 2-8-0 48624: Kinchley Lane, T/F* at Quorn (with the Windcutters), arriving into Quorn and Loughborough
*T/F denotes tender first.
I managed to capture all 8 locomotives, and I must admit that this gala was possibly the best GCR gala I have visited. I had never seen 3803 before, and hadn't seen 6023 move. 6023 made a great noise, and I was absolutely delighted to catch the shots that I did. Although the snow would've been nice, I think the contrast between the other shots of the King in the snow and these shots is fairly dramatic.
Thanks to all at the GCR yesterday for producing another wonderful gala! So, same time next year...?!

The first visit of the year was to a snowy Great Central Railway for their Winter Gala event. This year would see two guest locos, both from GWR metals, with 'King' Class No 6023 'King Edward II' making its return to steam since the problems it encountered at the Mid Norfolk Railway two years ago. The line up of eight locos ran an intensive timetable between Loughborough and Leicester North, including full line, local and goods trains, as well as the usual Travelling Post Office demo runs at Quorn & Woodhouse. Great central railway's steam gala January 2013
Action from Sunday 27th January at the Great Central railway. The line was hosting their annual winter steam gala. The biggest attraction to the event was by far the return of the blue King. After many problems she has returned. 6023 King Edward II was in fantastic form and sounded awesome. The King was backed up by visiting GWR 2-8-0 No 3803 and the usual suspects from the GCR home fleet. The locations i used today were Woodthorpe, Quorn and Woodhouse and Swithland. I must make an apology about the lack of sound from the final clip. The external microphones plug came out of the video camera half way through filming. Hope this doesn't ruin the film in any way. I hope you enjoy it and thanks for watching.
