Slut-shaming is the act of making a woman feel guilty or inferior for being sexually active, having multiple sex partners, or acting or dressing in a way that is deemed excessively sexual, often by calling them a "slut" or other derogatory terms. Slut-shaming is based on the idea that women should follow one sexual norm, and that any woman who deviates from this norm is inferior to other women. Slut-shaming can occur privately or publicly, between people in all types of relationships.
The term “slut” is often applied to women who have sex with multiple partners, are sexually active at an early age, or deviate in any way from the sexual norm. Use of the term is often based on stereotypes rather than actual behavior. In some societies, the sexual norm that women are expected to carry out only accepts sex within marriage. In such societies, women who deviate from that norm by having multiple partners, having sexual relations outside of marriage or committed relationships, having unconventional sex—such as homosexual sex, sex with multiple partners, practicing BDSM—and in other ways, can be demonized for such deviations. In some societies where it is the norm for women to be involved in multiple sexual relationships throughout their lives, slut-shaming focuses less on the woman’s physical actions, and more on her attitude and dress, and her sexual/intimate practices both inside and outside of a relationship.
