Scripps Networks Interactive () is an American media company formed on July 1, 2008 as a spin out of the E.W. Scripps Company. Since launching HGTV in 1994, Scripps has become a leader in lifestyle media, developing relevant content for television, the Internet satellite radio, books, magazines, and on emerging media platforms. In addition to HGTV, its lifestyle media brands include Food Network, DIY Network, Cooking Channel, Travel Channel and Great American Country (GAC).

Scripps is headquartered in Knoxville, Tennessee. On February 8, 2011, the company's headquarters facility was awarded the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification, established by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and verified by the Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI).

The company has additional office locations in New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Detroit, Atlanta, Nashville, Chevy Chase, Md. and San Francisco.

Scripps' Chairman, President and CEO is Kenneth W. Lowe, who founded HGTV in 1994.

Company History

Scripps Networks Interactive’s roots began with the E.W. Scripps Company in 1993. The company had announced that year the launch of a 24-hour cable network in the fall of 1994. On December 30, 1994 HGTV went on the air to 6.5 million homes in 50 markets.

In 1995, the official grand opening for HGTV’s new headquarters in Knoxville, Tenn. took place. The network reached into 10 million homes on November 1 of that year, launched in Canada and online with HGTV.com in 1996, and hit the 25 million subscriber mark in 1997.

Also in 1997, Scripps added its second network with the acquisition of Food Network. The year also saw HGTV execute its first HGTV Dream Home Giveaway, which received more than 1.2 million entries from across the country. By 2011, the number of entries had grown to nearly 80 million.

In 1999 Scripps launched DIY Network, described as the "go-to destination for rip-up, knock-out home improvement television." With three brands now under the Scripps umbrella, a $12 million addition was made to the company’s headquarters in Knoxville to provide the infrastructure and technology to support the networks’ continuing growth.

This growth continued well into the new millennium. Both HGTV (in November 2002) and Food Network (in September 2003) reached full distribution with 80 million subscribers apiece, while Food Network followed HGTV’s footprint into Canada by launching Food Network Canada at the end of 2002.

The first half of the decade also saw Scripps add its fourth and fifth networks to its mix, Fine Living Network (2002) and Great American Country (GAC-2004). A few months after the GAC acquisition, Scripps announced the move of the network’s headquarters from Denver, Colorado to Nashville, Tennessee.

In 2008, Scripps Networks Interactive split from the E.W. Scripps Company and received its own listing on the NYSE as tickert symbol SNI. The year also saw GAC reach 50 million subscribers, with DIY Network reaching the 50 million subscriber mark in 2009.

Scripps acquired a majoritiy interest in the Travel Channel from Cox Communications for a reported $975 million in late 2009, and the following year rebranded Fine Living Network as Cooking Channel.

In April 2011, Scripps announced the of of Shopzilla for $165 million. Scripps, from within its Travel Channel unit also invested in Oyster.com -- a hotel research and booking site.

On 15 August 2011, Virgin Media agreed to sell its 50% stake UKTV to Scripps Networks Interactive in a deal worth £339m. Scripps paid £239m in cash, and will pay out about £100m to acquire the outstanding preferred stock and debt owed by UKTV to Virgin Media. Completion of the transaction is contingent on regulatory approvals in Ireland and Jersey. Related to the transaction, Scripps Networks Interactive and BBC Worldwide are negotiating an agreement whereby, after completion, BBC Worldwide would have the option, via a combination of cash and a package of digital rights for UKTV, to increase its shareholding from 50 percent to a maximum of 60 percent. Scripps Networks Interactive’s existing voting rights and Board representation would be unaffected by this proposed arrangement, which would be subject to BBC Executive and BBC Trust approvals.

Lifestyle Media

Scripps Networks International

After years of distributing its popular lifestyle programming to more than 170 countries on every continent around the globe, Scripps Networks Interactive turned an eye toward renewed global expansion. Christopher George Robin "Chris" Powell (born 8 September 1969) is an English football manager and retired player, who had a long career as a left back, crowned by five caps for the English national team. He is currently manager of Charlton Athletic, where he had three successful spells as a player over eight seasons.

He served as chairman of the Professional Footballers' Association from November 2005 until he retired. He finished his playing career at Leicester City where he then became a first team coach. In October 2009 he was named as one of 50 ambassadors for England's 2018 World Cup bid.

At the age of 40 in February 2009, Powell said he still loves playing football.

Playing career

Early career

After leaving Raynes Park High School, Powell spent the 1985/86 season playing for the Epsom & Ewell youth team alongside a young Matt Elliott. He began his professional career in December 1987 as a trainee at Crystal Palace with Ian Wright but failed to become a regular with the first team. He spent time on loan at Aldershot, where he made 11 appearances, before moving on a free transfer in August 1990 to Essex club Southend United. In six years at the club Powell made 288 first team appearances. In November 2004 a BBC poll of Southend United supporters voted Powell their all-time cult hero. One fan described him as "A very skilled, left-footed defender, who could quite possibly be considered one of the nicest men in football, a true gent."

Derby County

In January 1996 Powell moved to Derby County for a fee of £750,000. He made 99 first team appearances before being transferred to Charlton Athletic in June 1998 for a fee of £825,000. Powell was a favourite of the Derby fans, and won the Supporters' Player of the Year award for season 1996/7. He scored twice during his spell at Derby with both goals coming in the 1997/98 season against Everton in the league and Southampton in the FA Cup.

Charlton Athletic

While at Charlton, he made 206 first team appearances, and evidently caught the eye of Sven-Göran Eriksson, who picked him for the England team in 2001, at the unusually late age of 31. He was the oldest England debutant since Syd Owen in 1954. At Charlton he delighted the crowds after each home victory with his exuberant leaps of celebration. Powell scored twice during his first spell with the Addicks, with both goals coming against Tottenham Hotspur; once in the league and once in the FA Cup.

Shortly after the start of the 2004–05 season, Powell was allowed to move to West Ham United, where he played a major part in their successful promotion campaign. However, during the summer of 2005 he and West Ham were unable to agree terms for a further contract and he returned to Charlton on a one year contract, with a suggestion that he would develop his coaching skills.

Typically consistent performance belying his years throughout 2005–06 saw Powell regain his place as Charlton's first choice left back, rotated with loanee Jonathan Spector, due to Hermann Hreiðarsson's move to the centre of defence. On 1 July 2006 he signed a one year contract with Premiership newcomers Watford as Aidy Boothroyd looked to add some experience to his youthful squad. He was released by the club after one year. In July 2007, Powell returned to Charlton for a third spell, primarily as a coach. He made his last appearance for Charlton on 4 May 2008, coming on as substitute for the last five minutes in the final game of the season, against Coventry, and scoring only his third goal for the club to seal a 4–1 victory.

Leicester City

Powell joined League Two side Bournemouth on a trial basis in July 2008. whilst the club looked to see if he could bring much needed experience to their defence. He joined Leicester City on a six-month contract on 23 August 2008. He made his debut against Fulham in Leicester's League Cup second round 3–2 defeat, playing the full 90 minutes.

On 6 December 2008 Powell started his 750th career appearance against former club Southend; Leicester won the game 3–0. He signed a contract extension that would see him stay at the club intil the end of the 2008–09 season on 5 January 2009.

In July 2009, Powell signed a contract to be a player-coach at Leicester City, becoming first team development coach, and also re-registering himself as a player. With teammates Bruno Berner out with a calf injury and Ryan McGivern struggling with form, Powell played his first league match on 26 January 2010, in a 1–0 defeat to Barnsley. He retired from playing at the end of the 2009–10 season; his final appearance came on 27 March 2010 against his former club Derby County.

Coaching career

Having served as a player coach under Nigel Pearson, Powell was retained by incoming Leicester manager Paulo Sousa in the summer of 2010. In October, Powell was named caretaker manager with Mike Stowell of the Foxes after Sousa was sacked. Their first, and only, game in charge came against Scunthorpe United; Leicester won the game 3–1. After Leicester's third goal, Powell showed his excitement by running down to the corner flag to celebrate with the players. He remained a coach at the club after Sousa's replacement, Sven-Göran Eriksson, was appointed. Eriksson—who selected Powell for his England caps—commented in December 2010 that Powell "will be a very good manager in the future".

Management career

On 14 January 2011 Powell was appointed manager of Charlton Athletic., signing a three and a half year contract. His first signing of his managerial career was Bradley Wright-Phillips, who went on to score on his debut on 1 February 2011, against Colchester United. He then progressed to score in all of the next 3 games. Powell had a 100% winning record in management including his opening four games at Charlton until his side lost 2–1 away at Hartlepool United on 15 February. Powell and his team have since gone on a similar run, this time of four consecutive defeats.
