Zwanzig Jahre nach Kriegsende entdeckt ein amerikanischer Flieger in einem Schützengraben einen Soldaten, der noch immer Wache schiebt. Ollie, der nicht versteht, wie jemand so dumm sein kann, wird alles klar, als er das Bild des Mannes in der Zeitung sieht. Es handelt sich um seinen alten Freund Stan. Sofort eilt er in das Soldatenheim, um Stan abzuholen und ihm von seiner Frau ein Festmahl bereiten zu lassen. Diese ist von der Idee überhaupt nicht begeistert, und es kommt zu einem schweren ehelichen Zerwürfnis. Das Ollie seine Nachbarin Mrs. Gilbert nur mit einem seiner Pyjamas bekleidet in einer Truhe verbirgt, trägt auch nicht zur Hebung der Stimmung bei. Mit "Black Heads - Die Klotzköpfe" greifen Laurel und Hardy zurück auf das bewährte Konzept ihrer Kurzfilme. Der Film kommt ohne Musikeinlagen und Rahmenhandlung aus. Die Story ist im wesentlichen dem Kurzfilm "Unaccustomed as We Are" (1929) entlehnt und konzentriert sich darauf, eine Reihe von gut durchdachten Gags zu präsentieren. Das destruktive Element in Laurel und Hardys Komik wird voll ausgespielt. Stan darf das neue Auto von Ollies Frau zu Schrott fahren, und Ollies Wohnung erleidet durch die Explosion des Gasherds massive Zerstörungen...

"Just Rambling Along" is Stan Laurel's earliest surviving work and the first project he did with film producer Hal Roach (who later put out a large portion of the Laurel and Hardy films.) "This film is a fascinating curio for showing the young Stan Laurel at the very start of his film career. It's almost a wonder it survived, but I'm very glad it did. The moral of the story for Stan: if you see a wallet lying on the ground, don't point it out to the kid sitting on the sidewalk." "Casting notes: according to one reference source the cook behind the counter is Charley Chase, but I'm inclined to believe it's Charley's look-alike brother James Parrott, sometimes known as Paul Parrott, who later starred in his own solo series of short comedies and eventually directed some of Laurel & Hardy's best films. The big cop who chases after Stan is Noah Young, who was featured in a number of Harold Lloyd shorts and features, while the chef is played by Bud Jamison, a rotund character actor who played in support of every major comedian of the era: everyone from Chaplin, Langdon and Keaton to the Three Stooges. Stan and Bud have a nice scene together in this film, and at one point Stan appears to break character and laugh at something Bud has said. I wish we knew what it was! He was a member of "Fred Karno's Army" where he was Charlie Chaplin's understudy. The two arrived in the US on the same boat from Britain with the Karno troupe. His film acting career stretched between 1917 and 1951 and included a starring role in the Academy Award winning film The Music Box (1932). In 1961, Laurel was given a Lifetime Achievement Academy Award for his pioneering work in comedy. He has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 7021 Hollywood Blvd. In a 2005 UK poll to find The Comedians' Comedian, Laurel and Hardy ranked top among best double acts and seventh overall. In 2009, a bronze statue of the duo was unveiled in Laurel's hometown of Ulverston, Cumbria. Met als uitgangspunt de viering van de honderdste verjaardag van Stan Laurel in zijn geboortestadje Ulverston, Engeland in 1990 door de "Sons Of The Desert". In 1912 trok Arthur Stanley Jefferson, als invaller voor Charles Chaplin, met de groep van Fred Karno naar Amerika. Na jaren van veaudeville komt hij, onder de naam Stan Laurel, terecht bij de jonge filmindustrie en in 1917 al heeft hij Oliver Hardy als filmpartner. Het zou nog tien jaar en ongeveer zeventig films duren voordat ze, via Hal Roach, als team wereldroem zouden oogsten. Laurel vertelt zelf een groot deel van zijn levensverhaal (met fragmenten uit net teruggevonden tapes), geïllustreerd door getuigenissen van o.a. Hal Roach, Jim Bacon, Lois Laurel Hawes (zijn dochter), Trudy Marshall en Eddie Quillan. Judy Patterson stond in voor de research met inbegrip van de filmfragmenten en zeldzame nieuws- en privé-opnamen. Het geheel werd gemonteerd door Bert Jordan. Nieuw beeldmateriaal werd geschoten door Elmer Cossey, Ken Lowe en Henry Braham.
