Chopper deal: BJP says JPC makes no sense as LS term ends in 2014
The BJP on Wednesday rejected the government's proposal for setting up a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) to probe the AgustaWestland chopper deal, saying the move was aimed at scuttling the probe as current Lok Sabha's term will end in 2014. "We will make our position clear in the Rajya Sabha. JPC is meaningless when there is one year left for Lok Sabha," stated Yashwant. Senior BJP leader Yashwant Sinha said that the party favours a serious and thorough probe into the Rs 3600 crore tainted deal contract and wanted the investigation to be monitored by a court. The BJP is expected to raise the issue in Rajya Sabha on Wednesday. The party is expected to raise three issues in the coming days - the AgustaWestland deal, the Ram Setu issue and the communal clashes in Assam.

'No UK troops in Mali' says minister 14.01.13
British troops will not be deployed alongside French forces fighting rebels with links to al Qaida who are attempting to overthrow Mali's government, Defence Minister Andrew Robathan said. The UK will send two C-17 transport planes to Mali and RAF ground crew may be stationed on the ground in the west African country briefly to service the aircraft, Mr Robathan told the Commons. But he said British involvement in the operations should only last a week, telling MPs the Ministry of Defence had made no plans to commit further resources to the war-torn state. Mr Robathan's comments came after Britain deployed the first of two C-17 aircraft to support French efforts to halt an advance by the rebels as they continue to fight the country's government. But after landing in France to pick up supplies and troops, it was grounded after suffering a minor technical fault, a MoD spokesman said. PIL states Ministry of Defense paralyzing the Armed Forces Tribunal The Punjab and Haryana High Court Wednesday issued notice to the Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Law on a Public Interest Litigation. The PIL filed by army reserve officer and first president of AFT Bar Association Maj Navdeep Singh states that excessive control of Ministry of Defense over appointments, infrastructure, rule-making and functioning of the Armed Forces Tribunal, being the same Ministry against which the AFT has to pass all orders is against the spirit of law laid down by the Supreme Court. The petitioner has also said that non appointment of judicial members is leading to paralysis of functioning of the Armed Forces Tribunal. The PIL also states that the AFT appears to be more of an extension of the State rather than an independent judicial body. "The same is in the teeth of the decision of the Supreme Court in the recent judgment UOI Vs R Gandhi wherein the Supreme Court has already held that Tribunals cannot be made dependant on sponsoring or parent Ministries for their functioning and that Tribunals should function under the Ministry of Law & Justice and that neither the Tribunals nor its members shall seek or be provided with facilities from the respective sponsoring or parent Ministries or concerned Department. Israel has successfully test fired the David's Sling missile defense system, bringing the country's multi-pillared air interception capabilities one step closer to the potential to intercept all enemy fire, the country's military has announced. The David's Sling battery, stationed at an undisclosed desert location in Southern Israel, fired and destroyed the incoming missile with a two-stage interceptor. "The Israel Missile Defence Organisation and the US Missile Defense Agency completed the first phase of the development of the David's Sling Weapon System, by conducting a successful interception," the statement said. The complex, also known as the Magic Wand, is a military system developed jointly by the Israeli military contractor Rafael Advanced Defense Systems and the American contractor Raytheon. It is designed to intercept medium- to long-range missiles fired from 40 km to 300 km away. The system is also designed to fill the gap between the other two functioning pillars of Israeli air defense: the Iron Dome short-range protection and the Arrow 2, a ballistic long-range defense system. The next generation of the Arrow is also being developed, and is set to be deployed in 2016. Transparency International Malaysia secretary general Josie M Fernandez responded to Defence Minister Zahid Hamidi today, after he labelled the methodology used in the Government Defence Anti-Corruption Index as biased. Josie said that Transparency International Malaysia will send a copy of the report to Zahid and hope the ministry would engage with the corruption watchdog to address the issues it raised. Speaking at the same press conference today, former Armored Corps director, Col (Rtd) Kamal Omar, said that the classification of defense procurements as state secrets, hamper transparency. While he believes OSA could apply on how the procurements are used to maintain national security, the cost of the procurements and how they are acquired should be disclosed. In the anti-corruption index, Malaysia was listed as having a high corruption risk in its defense spending and operations. RTOP-12 Kralj Dmitar Zvonimir missile boat (photo : nase-sidro) Defence Minister Ante Kotromanović and Deputy Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Joško Klisović with delegations paid an official visit to the Philippines from 30 September to 3 October 2012. There they held bilateral meetings of defence ministers and political consultation of foreign ministries of the two countries. During a visit to the Ministry of National Defence of the Republic of the Philippines, Minister Kotromanović met Minister Gazmin Voltaire. During the meeting, both sides pointed out the very good bilateral relations between Croatia and the Philippines as well as opportunities for future development. In line with the common interest of the two countries for the preservation of global and regional stability through participation in international peacekeeping missions, it was agreed that there was a scope for strengthening bilateral cooperation, particularly in the field of military-technical cooperation, as well as in cooperation between the two navies. In this context, Minister Kotromanović emphasized the long tradition of Croatia as a naval and shipbuilding country, mentioning the recent decision of the Government on the construction of coastal patrol ships for the Croatian Navy.
