Microrevenue follows the logic that great change can be accomplished by many small acts and is an evolved idea from the success of the microcredit approach to financing small business. Microrevenue streams, of traditional or virtual currency, can be enabled within web-based communities by creating the conditions for many small transactions to contribute to a much larger outcome. This is especially achievable within the scale of on-line communities that arise around a cause, a belief or a mass-appeal project. A particular advantage exists for social businesses that rely upon small-scale transactions but may have ambitious or hard-to-define investment targets that can be hard to fund using traditional means.

The microrevenue proposition draws significant strength from Crowdsourcing the phenomenon explored by Jeff Howe in his book of the same name. A central thesis that communities of activity and of interest are no longer constrained by geography and can be massive in scale whilst drawing on devolved knowledge is also key to the rise of microrevenue.

Greg Nelson and Jenny Gardner are fictional characters and a supercouple from the American soap opera All My Children. Greg was portrayed by Laurence Lau, and Jenny was portrayed by actress Kim Delaney.
