Tokyo - Megacities
Tokyo, Japan is the original mega-city, a throbbing, dynamic metropolis of 32.5 million people, well over 50 percent more massive than the world's next largest metropolitan areas. With populations clustering around 20 million people, the metro regions of Seoul, Mexico City, New York and Mumbai are all less than two-thirds the magnitude of the Tokyo metro area. Tokyo's ranking as the world's number one city goes well beyond the sheer scale of its population. Its lively Shibuya district is home to the world's busiest intersection, a vibrant pedestrian scramble which people traverse from every direction at the same time. Tokyo's famously bustling Tsukiji Market plays fishmonger to the world as the largest wholesale fish and seafood market on the planet. Yet, despite its immense proportions, many worldly, well-traveled observers marvel at how well Tokyo functions. Tokyo's subway trains, packed to the gills during peak rush hour travel times, are known for arriving and departing with impressive precision. Moreover, the city manages to keep a comfortable handle on pollution, crime and other challenges that often accompany such immense urban environments. Tokyo officially Tokyo Metropolis (東京都Tōkyō-to), is one of the 47 prefectures of Japan. Tokyo is the capital of Japan, the center of the Greater Tokyo Area, and the largest metropolitan area in the world. It is the seat of the Japanese government and the Imperial Palace, and the home of the Japanese Imperial Family. Tokyo is ...

Istanbul - City Film
gototurkey.co.uk Istanbul is the largest city in Turkey, forming the country's economic, cultural, and historical heart. With a population of 13.4 million, the city is at the center of the second-largest urban area in Europe after Moscow, and among the world's largest cities by population within city limits. Istanbul's vast area of 5343 square kilometers (2063 sq mi) is coterminous with Istanbul Province, of which the city is considered capital. Straddling the Bosphorus—one of the world's busiest waterways—in northwestern Turkey, between the Sea of Marmara and the Black Sea, Istanbul is a transcontinental city, with one third of its population living in Asia but its commercial and historical center in Europe. Founded around 660 BC as Byzantium on the Sarayburnu, the city now known as Istanbul developed to become one of the most significant cities in history. For nearly sixteen centuries following its re-establishment as Constantinople in 330 AD, it served as the capital of four empires — the late classical Roman Empire (330--395), the Eastern Roman ("Byzantine") Empire (395--1204 and 1261--1453), the Latin Empire (1204--1261), and the Ottoman Empire (1453--1922). It was instrumental in the advancement of Christianity during Roman and Byzantine times, before the Ottomans conquered the city in 1453 and transformed it into an Islamic stronghold from which the last caliphate ruled. Although the Republic of Turkey established its capital elsewhere, in Ankara, remnants of ...

We need global action, not just regional action, The Hon'ble Marcelo Ebrard Casaubon: DSDS 2013
The Hon'ble Marcelo Ebrard Casaubon, Former Mayor, Mexico City Government, Mexico during Ministerial Session 2: Ensuring Energy, Water and Food Security, DSDS 2013 Speaking at the Summit, the Hon'ble Marcelo Ebrard Casaubon proposed the need for globally effective action and focused on the transfer of resources and technologies among cities as a measure to bridge the gap between developed and developing nations. A planet of 7 billion people, a number that is growing every minute, is likely to face increased conflicts over scarce resources. So unless we begin to use our resources efficiently, we are likely to reach tipping points that will not only harm our own well-being, but also that of our future generations. The decisions we make today will define our tomorrow. It is in this context that DSDS 2013 deliberated upon 'The Global Challenge of Resource Efficient Growth and Development.'

Night Lights 2012 - The Black Marble
The night side of our planet twinkles with light, and the first thing to stand out is the cities. "Nothing tells us more about the spread of humans across the Earth than city lights," asserts Chris Elvidge, a NOAA scientist who has studied them for 20 years. This new global view and animation of Earth's city lights is a composite assembled from data acquired by the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (Suomi NPP) satellite. The data was acquired over nine days in April 2012 and thirteen days in October 2012. It took satellite 312 orbits and 2.5 terabytes of data to get a clear shot of every parcel of Earth's land surface and islands. This new data was then mapped over existing Blue Marble imagery to provide a realistic view of the planet. View more imagery at earthobservatory.nasa.gov
