Jim McKay

James Kenneth McManus (September 24, 1921 – June 7, 2008), better known by his professional name of Jim McKay, was an American television sports journalist.

McKay is best known for hosting ABC's Wide World of Sports (1961–1998). His introduction for that program has passed into American pop culture. He is also known for television coverage of 12 Olympic Games, and is universally respected for his memorable reporting on the Munich massacre at the 1972 Summer Olympics.

McKay covered a wide variety of special events, including horse races such as the Kentucky Derby, golf events such as the British Open, and the Indianapolis 500. McKay's son, Sean McManus, a protégé of Roone Arledge, is president of CBS Sports and News divisions.

Biography

Early life

McKay was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and raised in the Overbrook section of the city in an Irish American Roman Catholic family. He attended Our Lady of Lourdes Grade School and Saint Joseph's Preparatory School. When McKay was 14, he and his family moved to Baltimore, Maryland, where he attended Loyola Blakefield high school. He received a bachelor's degree from Loyola College in Maryland in 1943. During World War II, he served in the United States Navy as the captain of a minesweeper.

Jim McKay (footballer)

James "Jim" McKay (11 June 1918–14 November 1986) was a Scottish footballer who played as a centre forward.

McKay joined Celtic from the army in September 1944 after serving in Burma with the Cameronians army unit. He made a scoring debut on October 7th as Celtic lost 3-2 to Rangers in the Glasgow Cup at Hampden Park. He played a total of three Regional League games for Celtic – scoring two goals – before asking to be released in March 1945. McKay later joined Alloa Athletic, and also went on to play for Portadown, Cowdenbeath and, in the 1949-50 season, Tranmere Rovers.

Jim McKay is an American film and television director, producer and writer.

He has directed episodes of The Wire, Treme,Big Love, Criminal Intent and Mr. Robot as well as writing and directing Everyday People and Angel Rodriguez.

Career

For The Wire McKay directed the fourth episode of the fourth season, "Refugees".Show runner David Simon had seen McKay's HBO films and describes them as "masterful, ordinary-life movies" and thought that McKay would be perfect for the series based on their shared characteristics of accumulating drama in small moments. McKay has worked with several cast members of the show on other projects including Reg E. Cathey and Jamie Hector on Everyday People and Wendell Pierce on Life Support.
