Secularization, Religious Resurgence, and Multiple Modernities
As modernity has advanced across the world, some people are surprised that in most societies faith not been relegated to the private sphere or altogether abandoned. Investigate the manner in which cultures modernize in unique ways, many of which accommodate or even promote religious belief and practice.

Are we facing an aggressive form of secularization?-Islam and Life-03-08-2012
On 10th of February a High Court ruled that prayers at official council meeting were unlawful. The action brought forward by the National Secular Society.
Pope Benedict XVI in his 2010 visit warned that Britain faces a threat from 'aggressive form of secularization'.
Recently Baroness Warsi, the first Muslim woman to serve in the cabinet told in her visit to Vatican told a 'militant secularization is taking hold of our society.'
It is said that people are struggling to find what joins them in a liberal democracy apart from just their economic well-being and the rule of the market.
It seems that the politicians are also alarmed about the fading of religious beliefs as well as religious identity. In December 2011, David Cameron warned about the 'moral collapse' in Britain and asserted that 'the UK is a Christian country and we should not be afraid of that'.
While Warsi's comment concerns religion in general, including Islam, David Cameron champions the revival of Christian values.
In this edition of the show we ask the following question: Are we facing an aggressive form of secularization?

America is being secularized: HOW?
Here we take a look at two incompatible ideas:
1. America is legally a Christian nation.
2. Atheists are successfully secularizing America.
How is claim #2 possible if the law really does outline the US as a Christian nation? Atheists aren't a voting majority, and they don't have huge funding for lobbyists. And if the law outlines a Christian nation, then they also cannot appeal to the courts. So how COULD atheists be successfully secularizing the US?
Of course, the answer is that the US is NOT a Christian nation, and atheists and secularists are succeeding because the law DOES outline a secular government. Atheists are usually the ones speaking up on this matter because they feel the most threatened.

David Ramsay Steele on religion. 3. Secularization challenged
Intellectuals have generally supposed that modern capitalism tends to erode traditional theistic religion, but in the second half of the twentieth century, many observations seemed to show that religion in the United States was gaining in power and influence.

March 26, 2009 | This video has been excerpted from the Berkley Center's event Secularization Theory and the Study of Chinese Religions.
Over the course of the last half-century, evidence from China has been used first to support and later to confound simplistic arguments about the decline of religion in the face of modernity. Without launching a defense of secularization theory in general, Dr. Michael Szonyi argued that there is something to be gained from situating scholarship on Chinese religion in relation to recent debates in the theory. He suggested on the one hand that secularization theory can be a useful tool in understanding the modern history of religions in China and on the other that thinking about what secularization has meant in China is crucial to a comparative global history of religion and modernity. He also argued that attention to the course of secularization both as a historical process and as a political ideology may help us better understand the religious policies of the People's Republic of China today.

David Ramsay Steele on religion. 4. Rodney Stark and the rejection of secularization theory
Why influential scholars like Peter Berger and Rodney Stark rejected the Secularization Thesis. Stark's theory: the United States is so religious because it has enjoyed free competition in religion. Qualified and paid ministers move their churches toward accommodation, while enthusiastic new sects come along to take customers away from the older and more complacent churches. Methodists were the original Evangelicals: as they fell under the sway of well-paid ministers, they were supplanted by the more aggressive, less accommodating Baptists.
