Mewar (मेवाड़ مئور also called Udaipur Kingdom) is a region of south-central Rajasthan state in western India. It includes the present-day districts of Bhilwara, Chittorgarh, Rajsamand, Udaipur, and some of the part of Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh. The region was for centuries a Rajput kingdom that later became a princely state under the British. It was ruled by the Chattari rajputs of Mori Guhilot Parihar and Sisodia dynasties for over 1,400 years.

It was originally called Medhpaat, and Lord Shiva (Ekling Nath) is called The King of Mewar so he is called as a Medhpateshwar (lord of Medhpaat) later on it was due to long journey of words Medhpath became Mewar, Mewar region it includes lies across the Aravali Range to the northwest, Ajmer lies to the north, Gujarat and the Vagad region of Rajasthan lie to the south, the Malwa region of Madhya Pradesh state lies to the southeast, and the Hadoti region of Rajasthan lies to the east.

The northern part of Mewar is a gently sloping plain, drained by the Bedach and Banas River and its tributaries, which empty northwest into the Chambal River, a tributary of the Yamuna River. The southern part of the region is hilly, and marks the divide between the Banas and its tributaries and the headwaters of the Sabarmati and Mahi rivers and their tributaries, which drain south into the Gulf of Cambay through Gujarat state. The Aravalli Range forms the northwestern boundary of the region, composed mostly of sedimentary rocks, like marble and Kota Stone, which has traditionally been an important construction material.

The region is part of the Kathiawar-Gir dry deciduous forests' ecoregion. Protected areas include the Jaisamand Wildlife Sanctuary, the Kumbhalgarh Wildlife Sanctuary, the Bassi Wildlife Sanctuary and the Sitamata Game Sanctuary.

Mewar has a tropical climate. Rainfall averages 660 mm/year, and is generally higher in the southwest and lower in the northeast of the region. Over 90% of the rain typically falls in the period June to September every year, during the southwest monsoon.

A certain Kanak-Sen left Koshala in the 2nd century and settled in Saurashtra. His descendents established themselves and became rulers at Vallabhi. Ages later, Prince Grahaditya also known as Guhil obtained the small kingdom of Idar. His name became the patronymic Grahilot, later corrupted to Gahlot. They sometimes supported the Pratiharas (the dominant clan in Rajasthan) along with Chauhans against Arab invasions of 7th century. Later the wilds of Idar had to be abandoned and the clan settled at Ahar, and the new name Aharya came into use. Around the 12th century sons of Karan Singh I, namely Mahup established himself at Dungarpur while his younger brother Rahup established himself near Sisodia village. Later the term Sisodia supplanted both Gahlot and Aharya.^[1]</ref>^[2]

Rana Laksha of Sisodia clan with all his 10 sons had rallied in defense of Chittor but in vain. The Sardars decided that it was time to safeguard the royal lineage. There is mention of only two sons of Rana Laksha by name, Ari Singh I and Ajay Singh. Ari Singh I had a son named Hamir Singh I who was taken by his uncle Ajay to Kelwara for safety. After the defeat of Mewar at Chittor by Alauddin Khilji in which Rana Laksha and his son Ari Singh perished, the people began to rally behind Ajay who began a guerrilla campaign till he too died in 1320s. The Sardars now picked Hamir Singh I as head of the Sisodia clan and rightful heir to the throne of Mewar. He married the daughter of Maldeo of Jalore who now governed Chittor for the Delhi Sultanate. He overthrew his father in law and reclaimed his ancestral homeland.^[1]</ref>^[2]

Economy[link]

The economy of the Mewar region relies primarily on tourism, the marble and stone industry, mining, handicraft, zinc smelters, cement and tire factories, as well as agriculture. Major crops include maize, groundnut, soybean, wheat, and mustard. Opium is also grown in the adjoining regions of the southeast (Pratapgarh and Nimbahere). Fishery also thrives in the region's various lakes, supported by a government fisheries department.

Lake Palace, Udaipur

• The massive Chittorgarh hilltop fort is one of the main tourist attractions of Mewar. The fort is a depiction of Rajput culture and values. It stands on a 2.4 square kilometre site on an 180 m high hill that rises rapidly from the plains below. The fort was sacked thrice by a stronger enemy. The first sacking occurred in 1303 by Alauddin Khilji. In 1535 Bahadur Shah of Gujarat besieged the fort causing the women to commit Jauhar. In 1568 Mughal emperor Akbar razed the fort to the rubble and once again the history repeated itself. In 1616 Mughal emperor Jehangir restored the fort to the Rajput but it was not resettled.
• Udaipur, also known as the city of lakes, is a world famous and a very popular tourist destination with its grand palaces, lakes, temples, gardens and narrow lanes.

• The Ranakpur village is home to one of the most important Jain temples, that escaped the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb's efforts to destroy Hindu and Jain temples because it is hidden in a geographically difficult terrain.

Early life[link]

Singh attended St Francis College and La Martiniere College in Lucknow, India. In 1987 he was an officer in the Indian Marines special forces (later MARCOS).

Career[link]

As a cadet at the Naval Academy, Cochin, Arvind Singh was awarded the President's Gold Medal for best cadet in 1980. A meritorious naval officer, he was soon selected for the BUDS (Basic Underwater Demolition School)/ SEAL course at San Diego, USA, and emerged from the course with flying colours.

He was thereafter deployed to Sri Lanka with the IPKF (Indian Peace Keeping Forces) at the helm of the newly raised Indian Marine Special Forces or IMSF (later MARCOS). As part of the Operations conductd by the IMSF in Sri Lanka he was awarded India's second highest Gallantry award, the Maha Vir Chakra^[1], thereby becoming one of only nine as well as the youngest ever recipient in the Indian Navy. The following is the citation of the MVC awarded to Lt Singh:

Lieutenant Arvind Singh was the Officer-in-Charge of the Indian Marine Special Force (IMSF) team which along with 10 Para Commandos was given certain specific tasks as part of the Indian Peace Keeping Force operation in Sri Lanka.

Lieutenant Singh leading a team broke out from Jaffna Fort at 1430 hours on 19 October, 1987. During this operation, the team had to negotiate through heavily mined road - with booby traps laid by the militants. The team was under militants' fire from buildings and roof-tops. Lieutenant Singh by his personal example of bravery motivated his men to secure the area which resulted in link up of 41 Brigade with 1 Maratha Light Infantry on 20th October 1987.

On the Night of 21/22 October 1987, IMSF team under his leadership was tasked to destroy Guru Nagar Jetty and the militant speed Boats in the Jaffna Lagoon. The team successfully placed and detonated explosive charges and extensively damaged the Jetty and destroyed six militant speed boats. In order to destroy the remaining militant speed boats, the team reached its destination by swimming over a mile underwater and successfully planted demolition charges in 11 speed boats, kept ready for the escape of hard core militants. Before the charges could be exploded, the team came under heavy fire from the militants. Lieutenant Arvind Singh once again effectively took charge of the situation and provided diversion by exposing himself to militants' fire without regard to his life and personal safety.

This act inspired his men who accomplished the task of destruction of all of the speed boats.

Lieutenant Arvind Singh thus displayed exceptional devotion to duty and gallantry in utter disregard to his personal safety.

His award, however, was mired in controversy with various credible allegations regarding veracity of the claimed gallantry, since Guru Nagar Jetty was in a well inhabited and urban part of Jaffna Town, and in very close proximity to Jaffna Fort, where an entire Brigade of the Sri Lankan Army was garrisoned, along with three battalions of the Indian Army. It appeared inconceivable that a flotilla of LTTE would operate under the very noses of such large IPKF and SLA contingents, leading many to believe the award was based on political considerations.

In 1993, he was involved in the interdiction and destruction of an LTTE ship off Madras. For his actions, he was awarded his second gallantry award - the Nao Sena Medal (Gallantry). This award too generated discussion, as Arvind Singh's contribution, along with CSS Deopa's, was simply to board the already burning ship (which had been blown up by Kittu, the LTTE ideologue and spokesman, who had supposedly brought in a consignment of weapons on the ship) and recover two burnt out AK 47 rifles.

He was selected for the Staff Course in 1995 at the prestigious Defence Services Staff College, Wellington Cantonment, Tamil Nadu. From 1996 to 1999 he was involved in staff duties at NHQ (Naval Headquarters). Thereafter he assumed role of XO (Executive Officer) on board INS Ranvir (D54); During his tenure at Ranvir, the ship earned the trophy for the best ship, the missile trophy as well as the best galley. This was followed up by a successful stint as CO of the 5665 ton INS Gharial (L23) LST (Landing Ship Tank) which conducted numerous successful beachings and retrievals in various exercises under his command. In 2003 he was given command of the Navy's premier Special Forces Establishment, INS Abhimanyu near Mumbai.

In 2004, he was promoted to Captain and completed a one year stint as CO of INS chilka, a large naval NCO training establishment near the Chilka lake in Orissa. On account of his meritorious services, he was selected for the Air Higher Command Course at the College of Air Warfare (CAW), Secundrabad, Andhra Pradesh in 2005.

He was Director of Diving & Special Operations at NHQ from 2006 to 2007 and thereafter assumed command of INS Ranjit (D53) until 2009. In view of his exemplary performance he was nominated to attend the prestigious Higher Command Course at the National Defence College, New Delhi.

He is currently with the Directorate of National Cadet Corps in Delhi as a Commodore, having been passed over for promotion.

Maharana Arvind Singh Mewar of Udaipur, Chairman and Managing Trustee, Maharana of Mewar Charitable Foundation (born 13 December 1944) is the younger son of Late Maharana Bhagwat Singh ji Mewar (year of demise 1984).

After the demise of Late Maharana Bhagwat Singh ji Mewar of Udaipur, his elder son, now Shriji Mahendra Singh ji Mewar of Udaipur was recognized as the Head of the Family in a public ceremony ("Tilak")that took place in Udaipur. Maharana Arvind Singh Mewar of Udaipur however has since, against all custom, traditions, and contemporary laws been trying to convince all and sundry that he is the Head of the Family. The Estate of Late Maharana Bhagwat Singh ji Mewar of Udaipur has been declared a H.U.F (Hindu United Family - Joint Family) by the Income Tax Tribunal in 1981 and is subject to a partition suit since 1983. Stay orders have been applicable on this Estate since and the activities initiated, expanded, alterations undertaken by Maharana Arvind Singh Mewar of Udaipur have been during the pendency of these orders.

Maharana Arvind Singh Mewar of Udaipur place of residence is Shikarbadi. On the demise of Late Maharana Bhagwat Singh ji Mewar of Udaipur, and after the "Tilak" ceremony of Shriji Mahendra Singh ji Mewar of Udaipur, parts of the Palace, specifically those in which Late Maharana Bhagwat Singh ji Mewar of Udaipur was residing were sealed by Shriji Mahendra Singh ji Mewar of Udaipur. Against orders of the High Court of "RAJASTHAN", the government / administration handed over these parts to Maharana Arvind Singh Mewar of Udaipur for which a contempt petition is under adjudication before the Supreme Court of India. Shriji Mahendra Singh ji Mewar of Udaipur has been permitted by the Supreme Court of India to take steps to repossess these parts of the Palace. It is under these circumstances that Maharana Arvind Singh Mewar of Udaipur has been residing in the City Palace.

Maharana Arvind Singh Mewar of Udaipur is a graduate of the Mayo College, Ajmer and is married to Princess Vijayaraj of Kutch, Gujarat, they have been blessed with three children: Princess Bhargavi Mewar of Udaipur, Princess Padmaja Mewar of Udaipur and Prince Lakshyaraj Singh Mewar of Udaipur. Tilak: It is a "Hindu" religion tradition of accepting a person in to one's family/worship/selection of heir to the abolished throne - A "Throne is full of Thorns" and is just a piece of wooden chair covered with velvet.

Udaipur: It is an old city of "RAJASTHAN" mainly famous for its "Blue Colored Architecture"/"Museum"/"Forts".

Mewar: It is mainly famous due to the magnificent valor/struggle/sacrifice shown by "MAHARANA PRATAP" against the then, "EMPEROR AKBAR". That is, "MAHARANA PRATAP" never surrendered even after the defeat at the "BATTLE OF HALDI GHATI". "MAHARANA PRATAP" lived in jungle and ate bread made up of "GRASS" but, never he accepted defeat and fought till the very end of his life.

Even "EMPEROR AKBAR" stated that "MAHARANA PRATAP" was the only person he was unable to defeat in his entire life.

Early years[link]

Caballero (birth name: Linda Viera Caballero) was born in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico. Her parents moved to New York City soon after her birth, and settled down in the South Bronx area of the city. They moved in with Caballero's grandmother, a woman who served as an important influence on Caballero's life. Her stage name "India" was given to Caballero by her grandmother because of her dark features and long straight black hair.^[1]

In 1985, when Caballero was 14 years old, she was a founding member of the Latin freestyle group TKA and was featured on the cover of TKA's second single, "Come Get My Love". She left shortly thereafter.^[2]

Caballero signed a record contract with Reprise/Warner Bros. Records, which planned on marketing her as the Latin version of Madonna (who recorded for sister label Sire Records). After recording the album Breaking Night, Caballero decided that she didn't want to take that route in her career.^[1][2]

First salsa album[link]

An important event took place when she accompanied her husband to a studio recording. Salsa band leader Eddie Palmieri happened to visit the studio and was impressed with Caballero when he heard her singing. In 1992, Palmieri produced Caballero's first Spanish-language salsa album Llego la India via Eddie Palmieri (The India has Arrived via Eddie Palmieri), which was acclaimed as one of the best salsa albums of the year. From then on Caballero became known to all as India.^[2]

In 1994, India together with Louie Vega recorded a house-music single "Love and Happiness" (Yemaya y Ochún) that paid tribute to Santería (a syncretic religion based in the Caribbean). This up-beat house track was played heavily in dance club's internationally. India's involvement with Santería drew much criticism. She later recorded Dicen Que Soy (They Say that I Am) which was a 2x gold-certified Billboard hit and included the song "Vivir Lo Nuestro", a duet with Marc Anthony. Later this same year Combinación Perfecta. was released.^[1]

In 1996, India worked with Tito Puente on Jazzin, an English-language album of swing classics with a Latin twist on RMM Records. That same year she contributed the song "Banderas" to the album entitled Voces Unidas (United Voices), a multi-artist tribute to the 1996 Summer Olympics. She also released India: Mega Mix that same year before divorcing Vega. India sang a duet titled "La Voz de la Experiencia" (The Voice of Experience) with Celia Cruz, the late Queen of Salsa. It was then that Cruz gave Caballero her longer name: India the Princess of Salsa. In 1997, India recorded "Sobre el Fuego" (Over the Fire) with Puerto Rican salsa singer Kevin Ceballo as backup. The song was nominated for Best Latin Tropical Performance Grammy Award. In 1998, she won an ACE Award.^[2]

On May 31, 1998, India gave two sold-out concerts at the Luis A. Ferre Performing Arts Center in San Juan, Puerto Rico. She returned to the United States and Cable Channel UPN aired one of her shows. India also held concerts in New York's Madison Square Garden and in El Festival de la Calle Ocho in Miami, Florida. In September 1999, India released her album Sola, which earned her great reviews for the single "Sola" and for covers of two hits by the late Cuban sensation La Lupe "Que Te Pedi" and "Si Vuelves Tu."^[1]

On February 5, 2000, a full-page ad in Billboard Magazine congratulated India for her second Grammy Award nomination. In March 2000, she was featured in Vibe Magazine. In 2003, India released Latin Songbird: Mi Alma y Corazón. The album's lead single "Sedúceme" became a hit on the Latin charts and topped the U.S. Billboard Hot Latin Tracks for several weeks. This romantic salsa hit single was India's first number-one song. The song brought her a new fan base with many awards and nominations, including two Latin Grammy nominations for Best Salsa Album and Best Tropical Song in 2003, and her third Grammy Award nomination for Best Salsa Album in 2004.^[3]

In 2005, India participated in the musical presentation Selena ¡VIVE!, a tribute to the late Tejano sensation Selena Quintanilla-Perez. In 2006, India released the album Soy Diferente, which contained two songs that became award-winning hits. The 2007 Annual Latin Billboard Awards honored India with Best Tropical Album of the Year Female for "Soy Diferente" (I Am Different), and Latin Dance Club Play Track of the Year for "Solamente Una Noche" (Just For One Night). In 2007, India collaborated with Latin sensation Gloria Estefan in a duet titled "90 Millas."^[3]

India is set to release her ninth studio album in 2010, which will propel her music to various European and Asian countries. India mentioned to the Associated Press, "I am reinventing myself...changing my physical image. India will return to become a Barbie. But more than that, I feel like a new woman because I have been blessed with many beautiful things. After many years, I have my family with me and I am not separated from my mother, in which I suffered greatly. I have her in my life and that brings inner peace that I haven't had in a long time."

On February 23, 2010, India's newest single "Estupida" was released on iTunes. The single was recorded in two versions, a salsa version and a ballad version.India filmed a video for both versions were been released. The song debuted on the tropical billboard charts at #10 and made it to #1 in just a couple of weeks. India's ninth studio album, Unica, was released June 1, 2010.

In 2011 India still continues to release new music. India's latest songs include a duet with Issac Delgado titled, "Que no se te olvide" which has four different versions, one salsa, another an extended salsa mix, one a bachata version, and another a New York Pop version. In 2011, India released a new house track titled, "Tacalacateo" which she worked on with Italian DJ, Peppe Citarella. Tacalacateo peaked at #13 on the Billboards dance tracks.

Awards and recognition[link]

On June 11, 2006, India was honored by Union City, New Jersey with a star on the Walk of Fame at Union City's Celia Cruz Park.^[4]
