INDIA : Danish Woman Gang Raped For 3 Hours In Heart of Delhi - 16 January 2014
INDIA : Danish Woman Gang Raped For 3 Hours In Heart of Delhi - 16 January 2014 NEW DELHI: Less than 13 months after Nirbhaya's brutal gang-rape had city authorities promising a safer Delhi for women, precious little seems to have changed. Horror and shame revisited the capital on Tuesday, when a 51-year-old Danish tourist was repeatedly raped by eight-nine men in a garden just a stone's throw away from Connaught Place in the heart of the city. The outrage continued for more than three hours, most of it during the evening rush hours, at a time when central Delhi was on high alert ahead of Republic Day celebrations. The survivor, on the last day of her India trip, was walking back to her Paharganj hotel around 4pm when she lost her way and entered the Railway Officers Club on State Entry Road near New Delhi Railway Station. There she was pushed into a small garden and robbed at knifepoint by the men described by police as vagabonds and drug-addicts. The woman said the men took turns to rape her, three of them allegedly raping her twice. Around 7.30pm, the accused helped her scale the club wall, after which she reached her hotel and told the manager about the incident. The survivor refused to undergo a medical test and took a flight back to Copenhagen on Wednesday morning. By 8.30pm on Wednesday, police claimed to have arrested two suspects and identified the rest. Special commissioner of police (law and order) Deepak Mishra confirmed the arrests. The gang-leader, who first accosted the woman, has been identified as Mahender Ganja from Fatehpur, Uttar Pradesh. An iPod, earplugs, Rs 8,000 in cash and a mobile phone allegedly bought with the stolen money have been recovered from him. Sources said Ganja was involved in two murder cases in the past. The other accused has been identified as Raja. The survivor's spectacle case and Rs 1,000 cash were found in his possession. Police have detained two others and were interrogating them till late in the evening. Four other suspects have been identified and teams are raiding places to nab them. Police said the suspects mostly hang around in the area around State Entry Road. They commit petty crimes and often came to the garden to distribute money, sources said. They will be produced in court on Thursday afternoon and taken on police remand. The survivor came to India on January 1 and stayed in the capital for a couple of days before leaving for Agra. She also visited other places, such as Mathura, and returned to Delhi on January 13. She checked into Amax Inn on Arakashan road, Paharganj, and was scheduled to take the return flight at 10.45am on Wednesday to Copenhagen. On Tuesday morning, she visited the National Museum and National Gallery of Modern Art. She was returning to her hotel around 4pm when the attack took place. She took the wrong turn on CP's Outer Circle and got into State Entry Road instead of taking Qutab Road. "As I walked down the road, I reached a dead end after crossing the divisional manager's office. I saw a board which said the Railway Officer's club (the gate was open to move out things after Lohri celebrations). A teenager was standing beside it. I asked him for the way to Paharganj and also asked if I could take the left into the gate and proceed. He nodded and followed me," she said in her statement, as quoted by a police source. Danish Woman Says She was Gang Raped in India
A 51-year old Danish woman alleged on Wednesday (January 15) that she was gang-raped and robbed at knife point near railway station in New Delhi after she approached a group of men to ask for directions to a hotel where she was staying. Reportedly, the woman took a flight to Copenhagen and left the country on Wednesday morning and also refused to undergo a medical test. The tourist in her statement mentioned to the police that she had been in India for a week and had gone to northern city Agra before returning to the national capital on Tuesday (January 14). The Danish national checked in a hotel, Hotel Amax Inn, and went to tour the National Museum on Tuesday and while returning she lost her way. The victim then asked for directions from a group of men near the railway station who first robbed her of her belongings at knife point and later sexually assaulted her. A leader of India's ruling Congress party, Shobha Ojha, condemned the incident and said it is a blot on the image of India, which would soon be recognised as the rape capital of the world. "It is very unfortunate that such incidents happen in our country, and this throws India in a very poor light and people comment that India has become the rape capital of this world. We have to be extra cautious, the entire society, the police, politicians have to make extra efforts to ensure that we change the mindset of men in our country. So that such incidents do not happen and we make India a rape free country," said Ojha. Earlier in January this year, a Polish national had complained of sexual assault while she was on her way back to New Delhi from northern city of Mathura. This incident has once again highlighted sexual crimes in India. An American tourist was gang-raped by a group of men in northern India's hill town of Manali in June last year. In March 2013, a British woman jumped out of her hotel balcony in northern state of Uttar Pradesh to escape, fearing sexual assault. Criticising the newly-elected Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who had promised women safety when forming a government in the national capital, a leader of Communist Party of India (CPI) said Kejriwal has failed to fulfil his promise. "This government also somehow did not give a strong message to such anti-women forces that a different government is here and we will not spare anyone if anyone indulges in such crime. So that is why such an incident has happened again and I don't think this is the only incident after Mr Kejriwal government came to power," said CPI leader Annie Raja. In July 2013, an Indian court sentenced six men convicted of the gang rape of a Swiss woman to life in prison. The gang rape incidents of tourists and foreign nationals have also raised concerns for the hospitality industry which thrives on visits by foreigners to India to earn more profits. "No tourist feels likes coming to Delhi keeping in mind all these recent incidents (of rape of foreign nationals). The rape of a woman from Denmark is condemnable and we have been demanding from the very beginning to use tourist police. But the tourist police have now just become a show piece and it was never used for its designated purpose," said General Secretary of Hotel Association of Pahar Ganj (area in New Delhi), Arun Gupta. Sex crimes are common in India. Statistics showed that 244,270 crimes against women were reported to the police in 2012, against 228,650 in 2011, according to the National Crimes Records Bureau. These include rapes, kidnappings, sexual harassment, trafficking, molestation and cruelty by husbands, relatives. They also include instances in which women are driven to suicide as a result of demands for a dowry from their husbands or in-laws.- published: 16 Jan 2014

India police arrest third suspect in Danish woman rape case For more Latest and Breaking News Headlines SUBSCRIBE to https://www.youtube.com/user/SuperNewsPlanet Police in the Indian capital say they have arrested a third man in connection with the gang rape of a Danish woman. Two men have already been detained over the incident and some of the woman's belongings recovered. The 51-year-old tourist was attacked by a group of men in the Paharganj area on Tuesday evening. Police say she was robbed and raped at knifepoint. There has been growing alarm at India's sexual violence since the 2012 fatal gang rape of a student on a Delhi bus. But violence and discrimination against women remain deeply entrenched in India's staunchly patriarchal society. A Delhi police official said the third suspect was arrested from the city's busy Nizamuddin area on Thursday. The two homeless men who were held late on Wednesday in connection with the incident have been remanded in police custody. Some of the woman's belongings, including an iPad, a mobile phone and some cash, were recovered from them. The police said they were hunting for five other suspects - "young men, mostly vagabonds" - who allegedly assaulted the victim for almost three hours at knife-point. The Danish woman told police that she approached the group of men after losing her way as she returned to her hotel in a busy backpacker district near New Delhi Railway Station. Media reports said the woman was gagged, beaten up and raped by the men. The woman flew out of India on Wednesday morning. Last March a Swiss tourist was gang raped and her partner attacked by a group of men in Madhya Pradesh state. Six men were jailed for life for the attack in July.
