The American Prospect is a monthly American political magazine dedicated to American liberalism. Based in Washington, DC, The American Prospect is a journal "of liberal ideas, committed to a just society, an enriched democracy, and effective liberal politics"^[2] which focuses on United States politics and public policy. Politically, the magazine is in support of modern American liberalism, similar to The New Republic and The Nation, which likewise target a left-wing audience.

According to the website of The American Prospect, "at the dawn of a new progressive era and a time of economic transformation for the United States and the world, the magazine's founding purpose was to demonstrate that progressive ideas could animate a majority politics; to restore to intellectual and political respectability the case for social investment; to energize civic democracy and give voice to the disenfranchised; and to counteract the growing influence of conservative media."^[3]

The magazine was founded in 1990 by Robert Kuttner, Robert Reich, and Paul Starr as a response to the perceived intellectual ascendancy of conservatism in the 1980s. It currently enjoys a monthly readership of 100,000 and an online readership of nearly 1 million.^[3]

The American Prospect has run a writing fellows program that offers young journalists the opportunity to spend two years at the magazine, blogging as well as contributing to the print magazine. The current fellows are Patrick Caldwell and Jamelle Bouie; past fellows have included Adam Serwer, Tim Fernholz, Matt Yglesias, Ezra Klein, Chris Mooney, Joshua Marshall, Dana Goldstein, and Kate Sheppard.

In March 2010, The American Prospect entered into an affiliation with the Demos, a public policy research and advocacy center based in New York City. Every issue of The American Prospect includes a detailed, single-issue feature by Demos.

In 2010, The American Prospect was the recipient of Utne Reader magazine's Utne Independent Press Award for Political Coverage.^[4]

Kit Rachlis has served since 2011 as the magazine's editor. Kuttner and Starr share the title of co-editor.

Format[link]

Originally The American Prospect published quarterly, then bimonthly. In 2000, thanks to a grant from the Schumann Center for Media and Democracy, it became biweekly.^[5] Financial and logistical difficulties ensued, and the magazine moved to its present monthly format in spring 2003. The online version of the magazine includes an active blog called TAPPED (derived from TAP, the acronym of The American Prospect), as well as a blog by Adam Serwer.

Robert Kuttner (pronounced /ˈkʌtnər/) is an American journalist and writer. Kuttner is the co-founder and current co-editor of The American Prospect, which was created in 1990 as "an authoritative magazine of liberal ideas," according to its mission statement. He was a twenty year columnist for Business Week and continues to write columns in The Boston Globe.^[1]

He is also one of five co-founders of the Economic Policy Institute, and currently serves on its board of directors. In 2007, Kuttner joined the non-partisan public policy center Demos as a Distinguished Senior Fellow.

Robert Kuttner attended Oberlin College, the University of California, Berkeley, and the London School of Economics.

At different times throughout his career he has taught at Brandeis, Boston University, University of Massachusetts Amherst, and Harvard's Institute of Politics. He has also been a John F. Kennedy Fellow at Harvard University, a Woodrow Wilson Fellow at UC-Berkeley, a Guggenheim Fellow, and a Radcliffe Public Policy Fellow.

He holds an honorary degree from Swarthmore College.

Kuttner has had an extensive career as a writer and editor at various national publications.

In addition to his early work at Pacifica Radio, including a stint as general manager of WBAI-FM in New York, he has served as Washington Editor of the Village Voice, economics editor at The New Republic, and was a member of the national staff at the Washington Post. Between 1984 and 2005 he was one of five columnists for the "Economic Viewpoint" section (also titled "Economic Watch") of BusinessWeek. He has been a columnist in the Boston Globe since 1985.

Robert Kuttner has been recognized by various organizations for his career as a journalist. These honors include the Sidney Hillman Award, which he won twice, for his 1997 book Everything For Sale, and in 2008 for "Obama's Challenge."

He has also been the recipient of the Paul Hoffman Award for Human Development of the United Nations, the Jack London Award for labor journalism, and the John Hancock Award "for excellence in business and financial journalism."

Kuttner's wife Joan Fitzgerald is the Director of the Law, Policy and Society Program at Northeastern University in Boston. His former wife, the late Sharland Grace Trotter, was a psychotherapist and author. Paul Starr (May 12, 1949) is a Pulitzer Prize-winning professor of sociology and public affairs at Princeton University. He is also the co-editor (with Robert Kuttner) and co-founder (with Robert Kuttner and Robert Reich) of The American Prospect, a notable liberal magazine which was created in 1990. In 1994 he founded the Electronic Policy Network, or Moving Ideas, which is an online public policy resource.

At Princeton University, Starr holds the Stuart Chair in Communications and Public Affairs at the Woodrow Wilson School. The Social Transformation of American Medicine won the 1984 Pulitzer Prize for General Non-Fiction^[1] as well as the Bancroft Prize. His recent book The Creation of the Media received the 2005 Goldsmith Book Prize.

In 1993, Starr was the senior advisor for President Bill Clinton's proposed health care reform plan. He is also the president of the Sandra Starr Foundation.

Starr holds a B.A. from Columbia University and a Ph.D. from Harvard University. He lives in Princeton, New Jersey and is married to Ann Baynes Coiro. He has four children and three stepchildren.

Harold Meyerson (born 1950) is an American journalist and opinion columnist. In 2009 The Atlantic Monthly named him one of "the most influential commentators in the nation" as part of their list "The Atlantic 50."^[1][2]

Born in Los Angeles, Meyerson was educated in the Los Angeles public schools and at Columbia University. The son of long time leaders in California of the Socialist Party of America, he was active in the 1970s in the Democratic Socialist Organizing Committee.

Meyerson is editor-at-large of The American Prospect and has been a weekly columnist for the Washington Post since 2003.^[2][3] He served as executive editor of the L.A. Weekly from 1989 through 2001, and continues to write about California politics in the Los Angeles Times.^[2] His articles on politics, labor, the economy, foreign policy, and American culture have also appeared in The New Yorker, The Atlantic, The New Republic, The Nation, and New Statesman.

He is the author of Who Put The Rainbow in The Wizard of Oz?, a biography of Broadway lyricist Yip Harburg, and his articles have been republished in several books, most notably the Brookings Institution's volume on Bush v. Gore. From 1991 through 1995, Meyerson hosted the weekly show "Real Politics" on the NPR station KCRW in Los Angeles. He has been a frequent guest on television and radio talk shows, including "The Four O'Clock Report" with Jon Wiener on KPFK in Los Angeles.^[3]

An avowed democratic socialist—according to Meyerson one of only "two" that he encounters during "daily rounds through the nation's capital," the other being Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont^[4]—he is a vice-chair of the National Political Committee of the Democratic Socialists of America.^[5]

He currently shares his time between Washington, D.C. and Los Angeles.[1]
