Aversano's Italian Restaurant is located in a little strip mall at the east end of Sumner. It is in a location without an anchor store or any other huge hot spots to draw you in, yet night after night, this restaurant is filled with people from all over our area, who come to enjoy more than just great food. The atmosphere is something that draws you in and leaves you wanting more.
As my family dined on a Thursday evening in January, I looked around at the restaurant. Almost every table was full. "Why?" I wondered. "With our economy in a slump, how does this place continue to fill up?" Our waitress, Val, joined us since we had requested her section just as we do each time we arrive. It's not that the other wait staff is not good, it is just that Val (last name Hopfauf, which I never knew until tonight) was our waitress the night my husband and I met there for our first date in 1991.
At first glance, there is nothing too special about the old booth, glass over plastic tablecloths, garlic hanging from the ceiling, restaurant until you really look around. Is that salad bar an old wagon train car? Yes it is! Is that honestly solid, hand-carved wood behind the bar? Yes it is. It is only then that your eyes take in the true magic that is the beauty of Aversano's Italian Restaurant. It is, in a word, comfortable, but it is still more than that. The wood booths are really wood, solid wood, handmade with attention paid to the pattern of the grain as it was constructed. The decorations are real antiques that hold interest, not like the stuff you found in the corner of great-grandma garage after the estate sale, but real pieces of our history - phone operator station and a wooden phone booth.
A quick trip to the bathroom revealed an explanation of the bar. In short, it said:
This hand-carved bar was built in 1897 in Alabama, shipped around South America's Cape Horn and installed in the Mecca Saloon on First Avenue in Seattle in 1915. It was later shipped to Cle Elum [I didn't know you could take a ship to Cle Elum] where it was used as a saloon bar until prohibition and was installed in Cle Elem's Autorest Café in 1918 through 1976. It was then moved to Sumner 1977.
Wow, now that's history!
Old trolley cars labeled "Yesler Way - Lake Washington" and other names, line the other side of the room, as do the old diner booths with call switches and hat hooks. A photo of 20 men from the 30's posing after a successful fishing trip on the river in Orting, yet still wearing their vests buttoned up and their top hats, is displayed on the wall by our booth. I don't know about you, but I thought fishing attire was flannel and ripped jeans. You know they had that look then, or so they portrayed on Little House on the Prairie. It made for good family conversation about why we don't dress up when we leave the house anymore.
Our food comes and I just have to ask, "Val, is it always this busy on a weeknight in January?"
"It just depends," replies Hopfauf. "Monday and Tuesday were slow, but it has picked up since. Last weekend we were slammed."
When asked what has kept her working here for so long, she smiles. "It's low key, not a franchise; you can spend time with your customers. I have my regulars that always request me. That feels good. It is fun here. I would not work here if it wasn't fun."
I remember when we met Val, she worked for a school district as an educator and just did this job a few nights a month for fun. After having her last baby, she chose to leave her education job, instead of her Aversano's job. I think that says a lot about the character of the staff. "There is not a big turn over in our staff. We are all really good friends. Also, our boss treats us with respect. That is really important to me," she added.
As usual, our food was fantastic and we ate until we could hardly move. We paid our bill and made a quick trip to the Tropical Fish World and Pets next door for fish for our son's new fish tank. After endless walking around, trying to pick out the perfect new pets, we returned to Aversano's to share our finds with Val. She fell in love, as I did, with the little frogs that live in the water with the fish, so I left and returned with a bag of water and a frog for Val. I could be wrong, but I bet that's the first time she has ever been tipped with a frog.

Benjamin Sumner Welles (October 14, 1892 -- September 24, 1961) was an American government official and diplomat in the Foreign Service. He was a major foreign policy adviser to President Franklin D. Roosevelt and served as Under Secretary of State from 1937 to 1943, during FDR's presidency.
Welles soon became a specialist in Latin American affairs. He served in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1919 and became fluent in Spanish.[16] In 1921, Secretary of State Charles Evans Hughes appointed him to head the Division of Latin American Affairs.[16]
In March 1922, Welles briefly resigned from the State Department.[16] He was unsympathetic to the view held by American diplomacy that military might was meant to protect the overseas interests of American business.[17] Hughes brought him back the next year as a special commissioner to the Dominican Republic with the rank of minister. His particular assignment was to oversee the withdrawal of American forces and to negotiate protection for overseas investors in the Dominican Republic's debt.[16] Welles remained in that post for three years and his work was accomplished after his departure in a 1924 treaty.[16]
In 1924, President Coolidge sent Welles to act as mediator between disputing parties in Honduras. The country had lacked a legitimate government since the election of 1923 failed to produce a majority for any candidate and the legislature had failed to exercise its power to appoint a new president. Negotiations managed by Welles from April 23 to 28 produced an interim government under General Vicente Tosta, who promised to appoint a cabinet representing all factions and to schedule a presidential election as soon as possible in which he would not be a candidate. Negotiations ended with the signing of an agreement aboard the USS Milwaukee in the port of Amapala.
Welles became a prominent commentator and author on foreign affairs. In 1945, he joined the American Broadcasting Company to guide the organization of the "Sumner Welles Peace Forum," a series of 4 radio broadcasts providing expert commentary on the San Francisco Conference, which wrote the founding document of the United Nations.[47] He undertook a project to edit a series of volumes on foreign relations for Harvard University Press.[48]
In 1948, Welles authored We Need Not Fail, a short book that first presented a history and evaluated the competing claims to Palestine. He argued that American policy should insist on the fulfillment of the 1947 promise of the United Nations General Assembly to establish two independent states within an economic union, policed by a United Nations force. He criticized American officials whose obsession with Russia required submission to Arab and oil interests. Enforcing the decision of the U.N. was his overarching concern, because it was an opportunity to establish the organization's role on the international stage that no other interest could trump.[49]
Later that year, the American Jewish Congress presented Welles with a citation that praised his "courageous championing of the cause of Israel among the nations of the world."[50]
In early December, 1948, Welles appeared before HUAC as part of its investigation into allegations between Whittaker Chambers and Alger Hiss (part of the Hiss Case). Later in the month (and after the death of his friend Laurence Duggan), he suffered a serious heart-attack.[51]
In April 1950, Senator Joseph McCarthy repeatedly charged that Institute of Pacific Relations or IPR, an organization that fostered the study of the Far East and the Pacific, was a Communist front.[52] Welles was a member of IPR's American branch.
He remained always in the public eye. For example, his departure on the Île de France for Europe was noted even as he declined to comment on charges made by Senator Joseph McCarthy about Communists in the State Department.[53]
He sold his estate outside Washington in 1952, and Oxon Hill Manor then became the home of a "huge collection of Americana."[54]
In 1956, Confidential, a scandal magazine, published a report of the 1940 Pullman incident and linked it to his resignation from the State Department, along with additional instances of inappropriate sexual behavior or drunkenness. Welles' explained the 1940 incident to his family as nothing more than drunken conversation with the train staff.[55]
He died on September 24, 1961 at age 68 in Bernardsville, New Jersey.[56] He is buried in Rock Creek Cemetery in Washington, D.C..[57]
Winston Churchill, who made the phrase "No comment" famous, cited Welles as his source for the cryptic response.[58]
Welles' papers are held by the National Archives at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Library in Hyde Park, New York.

Mount Rainier is a ticking time bomb that could dwarf the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens, sending massive lahars and mudslides toward the Seattle-Tacoma metropolitan area.
The most recent recorded volcanic eruption was between 1820 and 1854, but many eyewitnesses reported eruptive activity in 1858, 1870, 1879, 1882 and 1894 as well.
Although Mount Rainier is an active volcano, as of 2010 there was no evidence of an imminent eruption. However, an eruption could be devastating for all areas surrounding the volcano. Mount Rainier is currently listed as a Decade Volcano, or one of the 16 volcanoes with the greatest likelihood of causing great loss of life and property if eruptive activity resumes. If Mt. Rainier were to erupt as powerfully as Mount St. Helens did in its May 18, 1980, eruption, the effect would be cumulatively greater, because of the far more massive amounts of glacial ice locked on the volcano compared to Mount St. Helens and the vastly more heavily populated areas surrounding Rainier. Lahars from Rainier pose the most risk to life and property, as many communities lie atop older lahar deposits. According to USGS, about 150,000 people live on top of old lahar deposits of Rainier. Not only is there much ice atop the volcano, the volcano is also slowly being weakened by hydrothermal activity. According to Geoff Clayton, a geologist with a Washington State Geology firm, RH2 Engineering, a repeat of the Osceola mudflow would destroy Enumclaw, Orting, Kent, Auburn, Puyallup, Sumner and all of Renton. Such a mudflow might also reach down the Duwamish estuary and destroy parts of downtown Seattle, and cause tsunamis in Puget Sound and Lake Washington. Another Cascade Arc volcano with similar hazards is Mount Meager in southwestern British Columbia, Canada, which has produced several large landslides in the past 8,000 years, as well as an eruption 2,350 years ago that was similar in size to Mount St. Helens' 1980 eruption. Rainier is also capable of producing pyroclastic flows and expelling lava.
According to K. Scott, a scientist with the USGS:
"A home built in any of the probabilistically defined inundation areas on the new maps is more likely to be damaged or destroyed by a lahar than by fire...For example, a home built in an area that would be inundated every 100 years, on the average, is 27 times more likely to be damaged or destroyed by a flow than by fire. People know the danger of fire, so they buy fire insurance and they have smoke alarms, but most people are not aware of the risks of lahars, and few have applicable flood insurance."
The volcanic risk is somewhat mitigated by lahar warning sirens and escape route signs in Pierce County. The more populous King County is also in the Lahar area, but currently has no zoning restrictions due to volcanic hazard. More recently (since 2001) funding from the federal government for lahar protection in the area has dried up, leading local authorities in at-risk cities like Orting to fear a disaster similar to the Armero tragedy.

State Senator Pam Roach, R-Sumner, is a leader in the Washington State Legislature on trade policy and chairs the Senate committee responsible for overseeing public ports. She met on Nov. 4, 2015 with commissioners from the Northwest Seaport Alliance (which combines the ports of Tacoma and Seattle) to discuss findings from her recent official visit to the Panama Canal. Senator Roach explained how the massive Panama Canal-expansion project nearing completion could deal a major blow to business at the Tacoma and Seattle ports and outlined how she plans to help the ports better compete for cargo-related trade opportunities.

Richard Bruce "Dick" Cheney (born January 30, 1941) is an American politician and businessman who was the 46th Vice President of the United States from 2001 to 2009, under President George W. Bush.
Born in Lincoln, Nebraska, Cheney was primarily raised in Sumner, Nebraska, and Casper, Wyoming. He attended the University of Wyoming, where he earned a BA and an MA in Political Science, and began his political career as an intern for Congressman William A. Steiger, eventually working his way into the White House during the Nixon and Ford administrations, where he later served as the White House Chief of Staff, from 1975 to 1977. In 1978, Cheney was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives representing Wyoming's At-large congressional district from 1979 to 1989; he was reelected five times, briefly serving as House Minority Whip in 1989. Cheney was selected to be the Secretary of Defense during the presidency of George H. W. Bush, holding the position for the majority of Bush's term from 1989 to 1993. During his time in the Department of Defense, Cheney oversaw the 1991 Operation Desert Storm, among other actions. Out of office during the Clinton administration, Cheney was chairman and CEO of Halliburton Company from 1995 to 2000.
In July 2000, Cheney was chosen by presumptive Republican presidential nominee George W. Bush as his running mate in the 2000 presidential election. They defeated their Democratic opponents, incumbent Vice President Al Gore and Senator Joe Lieberman. In 2004 Cheney was reelected to his second term as Vice President; defeating Senator John Kerry and his running mate, Senator John Edwards. During Cheney's tenure as Vice President, he played a lead behind the scenes role in Bush Administration's response to the 9/11 Terrorist Attacks and coordination of the War on Terror. He was an early proponent of the Iraq War and defender of the Administration's record on terrorism. He became at odds with the views of President Bush for his support of gay marriage in 2004. Cheney was often criticized for the Bush Administration's policies regarding the War on Terror, NSA Wiretapping and "Enhanced interrogation techniques."
In 2011, Cheney published his memoir In My Time: A Personal and Political Memoir, written with daughter Liz Cheney. Cheney is often cited as the most powerful Vice President in American history.

Lewis Niles Black (born August 30, 1948) is an American comedian, author, playwright, social critic and actor. He is known for his comedy style, which often includes simulating a mental breakdown, or an increasingly angry rant, ridiculing history, politics, religion, trends and cultural phenomena. He hosted the Comedy Central series Lewis Black's Root of All Evil, and makes regular appearances on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart delivering his "Back in Black" commentary segment. When not on the road performing, he resides in Manhattan. He also maintains a residence in Chapel Hill, N.C. He is currently the spokesman for Aruba Tourism, appearing in television ads that aired in late 2009 and 2010. He was voted 51st of the 100 greatest stand-up comedians of all time by Comedy Central in 2004; and was voted 5th in Comedy Central's Stand Up Showdown in 2008 and 11th in 2010.
In 1998, Black starred in his first comedy special on the series Comedy Central Presents. He starred in two additional episodes of the series in 2000 and 2002. He starred in another special for the network in 2002, titled Taxed Beyond Belief.
Since 2003, Black has hosted the World Stupidity Awards ceremony at Montreal's Just for Laughs comedy festival for the three years the awards were presented.
In 2004, he had an HBO stand-up special titled Black on Broadway. Black hosted Comedy Central's Last Laugh '07, which aired on December 2, 2007 along with Dave Attell and D.L. Hughley.
In 2006, Black performed at the Warner Theatre in Washington, DC for an HBO special, Red, White, and Screwed. It aired in June and a DVD was released in October. When explaining his choice of venue, Black said that "some asshole" was paid to count the number of times the word "fuck" was said from his previous HBO special, Black On Broadway, and that the original location, the Kennedy Center, wanted him to cut back on its use. Black was told the number was 42, when actually it was approximately 78.[citation needed]
Black received a 2007 Grammy award for "Best Comedy Album" for his album The Carnegie Hall Performance.[10]
Black hosted the Comedy Central television series The Root of All Evil in 2008. The show pitted two people or pop-culture topics against each other as a panel of comedians argued, in the style of a court trial, which is more evil, e.g., "Paris Hilton vs. Dick Cheney" and "Internet Porn vs. YouTube". After hearing arguments from both sides, Black, acting as judge, made the final decision as to which is more evil.
