Oxfordshire (/ˈɒksfərdʃər/ or /ˈɒksfərdʃɪər/; abbreviated Oxon) is a county in South East England bordering on Warwickshire (to the north/north-west), Northamptonshire (to the north/north-east), Buckinghamshire (to the east), Berkshire (to the south), Wiltshire (to the south-west) and Gloucestershire (to the west).
The county has major education and tourist industries and is noted for the concentration of performance motorsport companies and facilities. Oxford University Press is the largest firm among a concentration of print and publishing firms; the University of Oxford is also linked to the concentration of local biotechnology companies.
The main centre of population is the city of Oxford. Other significant settlements are Banbury, Bicester, Kidlington and Chipping Norton to the north of Oxford; Carterton and Witney to the west; Thame and Chinnor to the east; and Abingdon, Wantage, Didcot, Wallingford and Henley-on-Thames to the south.
The highest point is White Horse Hill, in the Vale of White Horse, reaching 261 metres (856 ft).
Shirburn Castle is at the village of Shirburn, 6 miles (9.7 km) south of Thame, Oxfordshire. Shirburn Castle was the seat of the Earls of Macclesfield.
George Parker, 2nd Earl of Macclesfield (c.1695–1764), celebrated as an astronomer, spent much time conducting astronomical observations at Shirburn Castle, which his father had bought in 1716. Here he built an observatory and a chemical laboratory. The observatory was "equipped with the finest existing instruments" and the 2nd Earl of Macclesfield used it from 1740. In 1761 the astronomer Thomas Hornsby observed the transit of Venus from the castle grounds.
The Macclesfield Psalter was discovered in Shirburn Castle in 2004 when the contents of the Library were catalogued for auction.
The present owner of the castle is the Beechwood Estates Company, the Macclesfield family estate management company. Following a long-running and acrimonious court battle, Richard Timothy George Mansfield Parker, the 9th Earl of Macclesfield, was evicted from the family seat at the end of 2004.

Watlington is a market town and civil parish about 7 miles (11 km) south of Thame in Oxfordshire. The parish includes the hamlets of Christmas Common, Greenfield and Howe Hill, all of which are in the Chiltern Hills. The M40 motorway is about 2 1⁄2 miles (4 km) from Watlington. The 2011 Census recorded the parish's population as 2,727.
The Watlington area is likely to have been settled at an early date, encouraged by the proximity of the Icknield Way. The toponym means "settlement of Waecel's people" and indicates occupation from around the 6th century. A 9th-century charter by Æthelred of Mercia records eight 'manses' or major dwellings in Watlington. The Domesday Book of 1086 identified the area as an agricultural community valued at £610. Medieval documents indicate that the modern street plan was in existence in the 14th century, if not earlier. Cochynes-lane (Couching Street), and Brook Street are recorded and the High Street must have had houses.
Jonathan Samuels report on how Watlington people coped with the snow
The Charming Market Town of Watlington is near the Ancient Icknield Way. . Watlington still has a traditional Butchers and even a Fish & Chip Shop. One curious thing is that The main Church is not in the town centre. A local told me it was because Watlington had moved its centre long ago. There are three pubs, The Fat Fox Inn, The hidden in the backstreets Chequers and the Chiltern Facing Carriers Arms.At the heart of Watlington is the Watlington Memorial Club, and hidden behind it a treasure of sports facilities this can be seen in the video. Watlington Station closed June 1957 is curiously quite far outside town but still exists but is now totally overgrown. You can also see a 270 foot tall triangle cut into the chalk that is believed to have been undertaken in 1764 on the orders of Ed...
I have speeded it up by 800%. It plays 2 hours 40 minutes or so in 21.5 minutes. You will get the idea of the route if you never have done this ride before. This was recorded on the 30 mile route on Saturday 29th October 2016 at Watlington. Feed and water stops at 18 miles and 27 miles, something like that. This was well organised, someone raided a morrisons. seen the evidence of unused mini flapjacks by the food table!. Tasty. cakes and energy bars and gels with lots of water on tap. A well organised day and route. From the schools in the village. Did not think about the rain, around 50% of the time is was raining and water got on the camera casing ruining the video. nothing can be done afterwards. should have thought about it when taking the bike glasses off, same problem. water ruins...
This video is about The White Mark, Watlington, Oxfordshire
A walk around the remains of from Watlington Station, Oxfordshire
Stop Press: Another film is being turned at Shirburn a huge amount of equipment & lighting but I don't know what movie yet. (26Feb16) Shirburn Castle is owned by the Macclesfield Family, it was occupied until 2004 by the 9th Earl of Macclesfield. It is currently empty. It is possible to visit the Historic Church during working hours but you need to obtain a key from the Beechwood Estate. Shirburn Church is still consecrated with occasional services. You cannot see the castle in this video but rather the Gatehouse and the Many outbuildings. The castle which you can see on Google Maps (Satellite) is a fine square moated and turreted castle. A fortified manor house built in 1378 in brick with four towers and a gatehouse and surrounded by a moat. Shirburn Castle appeared in the Inspector Mo...
