President Obama Delivers Statement on US Military Force Against ISIS | AUMF FULL SPEECH
February 11, 2015 - Obama on war powers AUMF request: Islamic State is going to lose, Obama Says ISIS War Powers Request Not About 'Another Ground War'. President Obama's remarks over asking Congress to Troops on the Ground to Fight ISIS
(MSNBC) President Barack Obama said Wednesday that his request for congressional approval to use military force against ISIS is "not the authorization of another ground war like Afghanistan or Iraq."
The president spoke after sending Congress a request that would limit American military engagement to three years and would prohibit "enduring offensive ground forces."
Obama, speaking from the White House, said that the war powers authorization "does not call for the deployment of U.S. ground combat forces to Iraq or Syria. It is not the authorization of another ground war like Afghanistan or Iraq."
"I am convinced that the United States should not get dragged back into another prolonged ground war in the Middle East," he said.
Still, the request quickly drew skepticism from both parties. House Speaker John Boehner questioned whether Obama's plan will get the job done, and a leading Democrat in the Senate expressed concern about "a loophole that could lead to another major war."
The United States has been pounding ISIS from the air since last summer. Obama said in his request that he wanted to work with Congress and show the world a united front.
Obama’s Dual View of War Power Seeks Limits and Leeway In seeking authorization for his six-month-old military campaign against the Islamic State terrorist group, President Obama on Wednesday did something that few if any of his predecessors have done: He asked Congress to restrict the ability of the commander in chief to wage war against an overseas enemy.
The proposed legislation Mr. Obama sent to Capitol Hill would impose a three-year limit on American action that has been conducted largely from the air and, while allowing Special Operations commandos and other limited missions, would rule out sustained, large-scale ground combat. It would also finally repeal the expansive 2002 congressional measure that authorized President George W. Bush’s war in Iraq. President Obama Requests War Powers for Global Fight Against ISIS resident Obama formally unveiled his request for legal authorization to fight ISIS in Iraq and Syria, declaring that the ongoing military campaign will succeed in destroying the extremist group.
"Make no mistake this is a difficult mission, and it will remain difficult for some time," Obama said in a televised statement from the White House, "but our coalition is on the offensive and ISIL is on the defensive."
"ISIL is going to lose," he said, flanked by Vice President Joe Biden, Secretary of State John Kerry and outgoing Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel. Press conference video
Obama ISIS fight request sent to Congress President Barack Obama on Wednesday made the case for Congress to formally authorize the use of military force in the war against ISIS, declaring that congressional passage of the measure makes the U.S. "strongest" in the fight, and that "ISIL is going to lose."
"Now, make no mistake, this is a difficult mission and it will remain difficult for some time," he said during an afternoon press conference. But, he added, "Our coalition is on the offensive, ISIL is on the defensive and ISIL is going to lose."
Obama, flanked by Vice President Joe Biden, Secretary of State John Kerry and Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel, outlined the parameters of the request he delivered to Congress earlier that day. He said the bill reflects "our core objective to destroy ISIL," and includes authority for a "systemic and sustained campaign of airstrikes," support and training for forces on the ground and humanitarian assistance. Obama's ISIS War Powers Request Heads to Congress
President Barack Obama on Wednesday formally asked lawmakers for a three-year authorization for the use of force against ISIS.
The broad outline sent to Capitol Hill prohibits "enduring offensive ground forces" and limits engagement to three years. The White House hopes that the limitations will assuage the concerns of skeptics on both sides of the aisle who are wary of another conflict in the Middle East, while offering broad enough language to facilitate the demise of the terror organization.
Obama asks fresh war powers, says IS group ‘going to lose’ Vowing that Islamic State forces are “going to lose,” President Barack Obama urged Congress on Wednesday to authorize military action against terrorists who are cutting a swath across the Middle East. Yet he ruled out large-scale U.S. ground combat operations reminiscent of Iraq and Afghanistan.

While acknowledging the White House “did the right thing” in submitting an Islamic State Authorization for Use of Military Force to Congress Wednesday, Speaker John A. Boehner on Thursday said he still has “concerns” about President Barack Obama’s request.
“The president needs to have an overarching strategy to deal with this growing terrorist threat. He has yet to do that,” Boehner said. “He continues to look at this as a counterterrorism effort when in fact, there’s a war underway, and we’re in the midst of it. But the president has tied his own hands and wants to tie his hands even further with the authorization that he sent up here.”

A Short Bio on Rand Paul
Senator Rand Paul, M.D. is one of the nation’s leading advocates for liberty. Elected to the U.S. Senate in 2010, Dr. Paul has proven to be an outspoken champion for constitutional liberties and fiscal responsibility. As a fierce advocate against government overreach, Rand has fought tirelessly to return government to its limited, constitutional scope.
A devoted husband and father, Dr. Paul and his family live in Bowling Green, Kentucky, where Rand owned his own ophthalmology practice and performed eye surgery for 18 years. As a hard-working and dedicated physician--not a career politician--Rand Paul came to Washington to shake things up and to make a difference.
Dr. Paul has been married for 24 years to Kelley Ashby Paul of Russellville, Kentucky, and together, they have three sons: William, 21; Duncan, 18; and Robert, 15. He regularly volunteered to coach teams for each of his three sons in Little League baseball, soccer, and basketball. Rand and Kelley are both devout Christians and are active in their local church.
Rand is the third of five children born to Carol and Ron Paul. He grew up in Lake Jackson, Texas and attended Baylor University. He graduated from Duke Medical School in 1988. Dr. Paul completed a general surgery internship at Georgia Baptist Medical Center in Atlanta and completed his residency in ophthalmology at Duke University Medical Center. Upon completion of his training in 1993, Rand and Kelley moved to Bowling Green to start their family and begin his ophthalmology practice.
In 1995, Rand founded the Southern Kentucky Lions Eye Clinic, an organization that provides eye exams and surgery to needy families and individuals. Rand is a former president and 17 year member of Lions Clubs International, which is dedicated to preserving sight by providing eyeglasses and surgery to the less fortunate around the world. In recognition of his outstanding and sustained efforts to provide vision care to Kentuckians in need, Lions Clubs International has awarded Rand many of its highest commendations.
A large part of Rand's daily work as an ophthalmologist was dedicated to preserving the vision of our seniors. In 2002, The Twilight Wish Foundation recognized Rand for Outstanding Service and Commitment to Seniors.
During his free time, Dr. Paul performs pro-bono eye surgeries for patients across Kentucky. Additionally, he provides free eye surgery to children from around the world through his participation in the Children of the Americas Program. Most recently, he traveled to Guatemala on a medical mission trip with the University of Utah's Moran Eye Center. During the week over 200 patients, many of them blind with cataracts, had their vision restored by Dr. Paul.
Dr. Paul's entrance into politics is indicative of his life’s work as a surgeon: a desire to diagnose problems and provide practical solutions, whether it be in Bowling Green, Kentucky or Washington, D.C.
Randal Howard "Rand" Paul (born January 7, 1963) is an American physician and politician from Kentucky. In office since 2011, Paul currently serves in the United States Senate as a member of the Republican Party. He is also a trained ophthalmologist, and is the middle son of former U.S. Representative and physician Ron Paul of Texas.
Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Paul attended Baylor University and is a graduate of the Duke University School of Medicine. Paul began practicing ophthalmology in 1993 in Bowling Green, Kentucky, and established his own clinic in December 2007.
Paul has been considered a supporter of the Tea Party movement, and a vocal critic of the Federal Reserve System. He has opposed NSA mass surveillance of Americans and supports reduced government spending and taxation. He describes himself as "100% pro-life" and has cosponsored legislation for equal protection of the right to life from conception. Paul officially announced his candidacy for the 2016 U.S. presidential election on April 7, 2015.

“By him hedging his bets, by him being a big Clinton donor, it's questionable and he says he may not support the Republican nominee, so could he support Hillary Clinton? Or will he run as a third party candidate?” Paul said.
Paul was still throwing political jabs at Trump still swinging after last week’s heated debate and Monday's conference call, addressing the Trump factor.

Senator Rand Paul stopped in Colorado last week for several campaign events and sat down with 9 news to talk about important issues facing America. His most publicized campaign fundraiser event was at the Cannabis Business Summit at the Denver Convention Center. His fundraiser is the first time ever, a major party candidate for president of the United States raised money from the legal weed industry.
Paul also talked about the recent Supreme Court ruling on gay marriage and said how he believes marriage should have been left out of government and handled privately. Paul then finished the interview explaining how Cliven Bundy had only gone to one of his events in Nevada and their conversation was not as significant as the Associated Press had reported. Bundy is a cattle farmer that gained national attention last year for his standoff with the US government.

(Mediaite) Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) showed his impassioned side Monday afternoon during a heated interview with CNBC anchor Kelly Evans on forced vaccinations, a bipartisan corporate tax holiday bill, and accusations of “conflict of interest.”
From the beginning of the interview, it became clear Evans was ready to pounce on the senator for a variety of issues. She began with his Monday morning remarks to Laura Ingraham that most vaccines should be voluntary.
“Did you really just say [that]?” an incredulous Evans asked.
“I guess being for freedom would be really unusual,” the senator replied. “I guess I don’t understand the point of why that would be controversial?” When Evans insisted it was a problematic view to hold, given the recent instances of measles at Disney theme parks, Paul explained that he is not opposed to vaccines themselves, but to the idea that government must force everyone to take them. (An important distinction that gets lost in the conversation about actual anti-vaccine “truthers.”)
“I’m a big fan,” Paul said of vaccinations, “but for most of our history they have been voluntary.”
Pushed further, he added this money line that ought to get a rise out of many civil libertarians:
I think they’re a good thing but I think the parent should have some input. The state doesn’t own your children; parents own the children and it is an issue of freedom.
Evans then pivoted to Paul’s proposed corporate tax holiday (co-sponsored by liberal Sen. Barbara Boxer), and that discussion was somehow tense as well. The anchor pushed back on his proposal by suggesting “most of the research indicates that these [holidays] actually cost more money over the long term than they save.”
Sen. Paul was not pleased. “Your premise and your question is mistaken,” he said. “Most of the research doesn’t indicate that.” He pointed to a study from a former Clinton official that suggests the 2005 tax holiday was a net gain. But then the pair got into some tough crosstalk with the senator shushing his host and asking her to “calm down a bit here” as she continued to prod him on his proposal.
And the tension didn’t end there. Evans confronted the senator about a possible “conflict of interest” in a fight he had with the American Board of Ophthalmology over re-certification.
“Once again you’re mischaracterizing and confusing the whole situation,” the senator tore into Evans. “You have taken an interview and made an interview into something where we got no useful information because you were argumentative and you started out with so many presuppositions that were incorrect.” He explained that his fight with the board had nothing to do with helping family and friends avoid re-testing, but rather a struggle over competition and fairness in the certification process.
And when Evans closed the interview by asking Paul the requisite “Are you running in 2016?” question, he handed her another scolding:
We’re thinking about it and we’re looking around the United States and seeing if the message resonates. Part of the problem is that you end up having interviews like this where the interview is so slanted and full of distortions that you don’t get useful information. I think this is what’s bad about TV sometimes so, frankly, I think, if we do this again, you need to try to start out with a little more objectivity going into the interview.
(Politico) Sen. Rand Paul reproached CNBC anchor Kelly Evans on Monday afternoon for what he said was a “slanted” interview that got no “useful information."
Evans asked Paul about his comments on how vaccines should be a choice and about a Washington Post article that reported Paul appointed his own family members to a medical board he started.
“You have taken an interview and you’ve made an interview into something where we got no useful information because you were argumentative and you started out with so many preoppositions [sic] that were incorrect,” Paul said after Evans asked whether Paul had a response to the Washington Post piece.

Dr. Paul's entrance into politics is indicative of his life’s work as a surgeon: a desire to diagnose problems and provide practical solutions, whether it be in Bowling Green, Kentucky or Washington, D.C.

Paul.

Cenk Uygur (http://www.twitter.com/cenkuygur) and John Iadarola (https://twitter.com/jiadarola) hosts of The Young Turks discuss Rand Paul getting upset that someone pointed out how often he changes his opinion on key issues.
"The Kentucky Senator Rand Paul for President campaign train is already speeding away from the station and under a little bit of trouble. While speaking to Savannah Guthrie of NBC during an interview he became defensive when it was pointed out that he has a habit of changing where he stands on important issues, specifically abortion and his foreign policy. Social media users took to twitter, claiming this was yet another example of Paul being condescending to female reporters."
Is this a bump in the road or the nail in the coffin for Rand Paul's campaign? Let us know what you think in the comments section below.
