A tribute to Seamus Heaney (1939-2013) at St Edmund Hall, University of Oxford
These readings took place at St Edmund Hall, University of Oxford, on National Poetry Day, 3 October 2013. 'The Guttural Muse in the Sky' by Chris Mann was first published as an online contribution to the Hall Writers' Forum (http://forum.seh.ox.ac.uk). It was performed at the College as part of a moving candle-lit ceremony in honour of Seamus Heaney, round the well in the Hall's front quad. The passages in Afrikaans were read by Luke Mann, the poet's son; and those in Xhosa and Zulu by Alexander Afsahi, a graduate student. Jackie Shipster (Chris Mann's sister) read the English translation. The remainder of the ceremony consisted of readings of two poems by Heaney, specially selected for the occasion by his friends Kevin Crossley-Holland and Neil Corcoran, who are alumni of St Edmund Hall (http://www.seh.ox.ac.uk). Dr Aileen Kavanagh (Fellow in Law) and Dr Wes Williams (Fellow in French) respectively read 'The Peninsula' and 'The Strand at Lough Beg'.- published: 17 Oct 2013
