Colin Dale – Please Stand By EP

abstraktdance

I’ve had a lingering affection for Colin Dale ever since his Outer Limits show on Kiss FM back in the early ’90′s, which featured a glorious mix of techno and experimental electronica that consistently surprised and delighted.

This EP, released on the new Abstrakt Dance label named after that show,  kicks off with the punchy, funky ‘Please Stand By,’ the robotic refrain of the title underpinned by an addictive riff that had me head-nodding furiously in parallel. An hypnotic, swirling synth break elevates ‘The Lord,’ with its tech-house interpretation of divine invocation, into real twisted groove territory, the resulting melody a sweet counterpoint to the intense beat beneath. Jules Dicken’s remix retains Matti Dinah’s vocals, ups the bass and throws in some swishing chords and cowbells for good measure which, while no radical departure from the original, certainly fattens it up somewhat. The solid beat and simple bassline of final track ‘The Project’ is punctuated by a series of dissonant sounds, waves of synth and cybernetic vocals, as intense as it is rhythmic. Lovely stuff all round.

Android Automatic – Neon Waves

It’s been a while since we had anything that’s unashamedly synth-based. Here’s Detroit’s Android Automatic back to remedy that failing. Free download.

Neon Waves is such an 80s synth name. And the tune doesn’t disappoint. Proper 80s synthy nu disco, but without sounding old. Break out the Miami Vice box set D, I’m coming in with my sleeves rolled up.

Dustin Nantais – American Greed (Ayn Rand Mix)

Here’s something different for a Sunday. A really interesting, epic yet downtempo deep house tune, with sampled vocals from novelist and extreme free market supporter Ayn Rand.

To counterbalance that, here’s the Corporate Responsibility mix, which takes a more tech house approach

It’s getting a proper release on Trojan House Records:

Blurb: American Greed is Trojan House Records’ first release by rising Canadian producer Dustin Nantais. The track is a melodic exploration of the deeper side of house. Its oscillating trumpet captivates you whilst chords float majestically over the bass line and drums. The American Greed EP also features Dustin’s ‘Ayn Rand’ remix as well as two excellent remixes provided by Cameron Cooper and Murat Uncuoglu. The ’Ayn Rand’remix has a more after-hours feel than Dustin’s original mix and samples the philosophers ideals on control and economy.  The Cameron Cooper mix features somesensual synth sounds including a hypnotic bassline that echoes throughout the track, creating a sexy, dark and driving vibe.  Murat Uncuoglu’s remix takes a different approach as he adds an amazing piano part that tantalises the soul and will have youclosing your eyes and raising your hands in blissful ecstasy! Hailing from Toronto, Canada, Dustin Nantais has always had an insatiable hunger for music. He began playing the guitar and piano at the age of ten and by 16 he was producing music and performing in bands.  Nowadays, Dustin is a well-known DJ in some ofToronto’s hottest clubs, including BebaHotelComfort Zone andLimelight. His mixes have been featured on internet radio stations and podcasts globally. Where Dustin is truly finding his calling is in his production.

London’s Peh Per Ghost is back with another spacey ambient track. Free download.

We last had a track from Hackney’s Peh Per Ghost at the turn of the year. His tunes are morphing from a downtempo digital R&B into IDM and now it’s all about the things that aren’t there. This tune is sparse and fragile, like seeing briefly your breath on a cold day. There is a mixture of bassy and trebly inhalations and the merest tune. But the overall effect is poignant and more than a little shiveringly mournful.

Le Twan – Moon Dust EP

moondust

Space obsessed Le Twan is back with another off world synth EP.

Just out on Beatport, the EP has more synth funk heaviness than his rather good 1972 Ultimate Lunar Voyage DJ Mix which we had as a free download back here. Moon Dust is quite a hefty number for low gravity, with a synth funk bass twist to the beats making this more of a dance floor number. Zenita keeps that synth bass funk feeling but lighten things up a bit. Kolobok’s 70s disco feeling verges on the pastiche. Kirisame also has that moroder synth disco style but manages to feel fresh, with its chewy bass and uplifting synths. Best thing here. The EP ends with Wigs and Kippahs,  a cute little idea that could have been developed further. Kirisame is the focus of this EP, and the one to buy.

Blurb: Put on your astronaut outfit and take off into the Moon Dust! Le Twan’s third Ep is a weightless ballad on the planets Nu-Disco, Indie-Dance and Electrofunk. This musical space trip focuses on chilled-out vibes while revealing Le Twan’s background as a drummer. His combinations of fine beats are illuminated by percussive shooting-stars. The second track propels you to the Zenith. A horizon of cosmic melodies contrasts with hard drums games. Followed by playful « Kolobok », a fantasy track made of a rough electro bass tempo and funky tones on which jovial melodies softly dance. Then, a refreshing little rain is coming along with disco beats merging with soaring synthesizer soundscapes to transport you to the cloud of « Kirisame ». An exotic touch follows in an urban walk of xylophone notes and synthesized tunes to make hats and hairs twirl around on the affirmed beats of « Wigs and Kippahs ». Moon Dust, a chill-out Ep to fly with your body and mind through Le Twan’s planets of sound.

A Purple Heart – Wilderness EP

wilderness

Some new liquid drum and bass from A Purple Heart. Free download.

A Purple Heart claims to come from the Jungle, Korea (North). I think this may not, in fact, be true. Australia might be more accurate. Whatever, here’s a fair old pair of liquid dnb tracks. Wilderness is a light, skippy dnb track. A little too frothy for total pleasure. That’s not the case with Lazy Days which provides a mouth-watering confection of aching strings, emotional vocals and proper bassy beats. Lovely track.

Peter Hook and the Light – Everything’s Gone Green

peterhook

It’s Peter Hook. But is it sacrilege? Peter Hook And The Light are touring performances of the first two New Order albums – Movement and Power Corruption & Lies (probably my favourite album after Technique).

Whilst you ponder that question, here’s a free download of Peter Hook and the Light doing Everything’s Gone Green live, for free download. Inevitably, the bass takes centre stage and the music is rockier than I remember from New Order. I guess it’s the growlled vocals that jar the most. That, and the idea.

Peter Hook And The Light perform of the first two albums released by New Order, “Movement” (1981) and “Power Corruption And Lies” (1983) at the unique, inaugural Manchester concert in January 2013, taking place at Manchester Cathedral.

To hear full clips of the concert and purchase either Mp3 or WAV versions of the show go to – http://music.playconcert.com/

Blurb: Following their sold out debut UK concerts in January 2013, Peter Hook & The Light are to debut their critically acclaimed performances of the first two New Order albums, “Movement” (1981) and “Power, Corruption & Lies” (1983) to North American audiences for the first time in September 2013. Support at all headline dates will come from ‘Slaves of Venus’. In the first of a string of international dates to be announced for The Light, this nine date run of the United States along with three dates in Canada sees the band return to cities previously visited, as well as some for the first time, and marks their third tour of North America after dates in December 2010 and September 2011 performing Joy Division’s “Unknown Pleasures” and “Closer” albums. All of the shows feature full performances of both albums in full, sequential order, which has become a hallmark of The Light’s sets, and will also include singles and B-Sides from the corresponding period including “Everything’s Gone Green”, “Temptation” and “Blue Monday” which New Order generally didn’t include on the releases, preferring their LPs to stand alone in comparison to the singles.
