DEUS EX HOMINE - San Francisco 3D Moco Time-lapse by Golden Gate 3D
This was a stereoscopic 3D motion-controlled time-lapse test for an upcoming IMAX 3D project. Ideally, it should be viewed in S3D.
View it in 3D at YouTube 3D: http://youtu.be/0quUxvXtHPw
You can select from various anaglyph (colored glasses) and stereo modes.
NVIDIA has chosen "Deus Ex Homine" as "Best 3D Video of 2011": http://www.3dvisionlive.com/content/best-3d-video-2011
If you have NVIDIA 3D Vision, you can also view at NVIDIA's 3D Vision Live, which offers a higher quality stream than YouTube: http://www.3dvisionlive.com/3d_video/deus-ex-homine-san-francisco-3d-moco-time-lapse
"Deus Ex Homine" comes from Latin meaning "god built by humans." That "god" might be the tools - our machines and technologies, the city - our caves of concrete and steel, and the networks - the highways and waterways that are the lifeblood of our cities. With our technology, we conquered and reshaped the natural world. As we have overrun our planet's surface, more and more of us live in the fantastically complex artificial biomes that are our cities. Modern societies and economies depend on these constructs. Bridges and servers connect us, cars and planes move us, farms and restaurants feed us, and cargo ships and oil tankers make it all possible. The "Makers" among us forge machines - electromechanical gods - that reshape and govern humanity. Automobiles. Typewriters. Computers. The Robot Maker creates machines in our image, striving to infuse them with intelligence, emotion, and sentience. Perhaps some day they will surpass us. They already have in many ways. Perhaps we will re-engineer ourselves, integrating man and machine. Deus ex homine (deus?).
Brad Kremer and Stewart Mayer of camBLOCK flew out for three days of shooting at the end of March. It rained the entire time they were in town so we were confined to interiors, which turned out to be a bit of a blessing in disguise since those shots turned out to be some of the more impressive ones in 3D. After the weather cleared, I shot for an additional nine days around San Francisco with assistance from Simon Christen, Noah Hawthorne, Christopher Fuzi, Robert Mooring, Josh Golz, and Paul Leeming.
Canon 5D Mark II's were used in both parallel and beamsplitter configurations for true, native stereo capture at 5.6K resolution RAW. The camBLOCK and Dynamic Perception were used for motion control. There were some major technical hurdles with both capture and post, but once we saw the results in 3D, it was well worth it.
Special thanks to Jeremy Mayer, Cisco Systems, Gather Restaurant, San Francisco Flower & Garden Show, The Millennium Tower, The Port of Oakland, and the San Francisco Film Commission for giving us access to some great locations and subjects on short notice.

Jeremy Mayer - Typewriter Sculptor
http://jeremymayer.com
http://twitter.com/JeremyMayer
Jeremy Mayer on Bust V (Grandfather): "The initial inspiration for the piece was that I wanted to create a self-portrait in my old age, so it's based on me, my dad, and my grandfather. I wanted to say something about aging, transition (particularly transition into new technology), and the place of the personal mechanical machine in modern society, all without making the piece look too 'robotic'. A lot of the sculpture I've done over the years has been ideal human figures: youthful, athletic, and kind of sexy. With this one I wanted to create a face that was more aged and worn, the face of a person who was tired, maybe a little forlorn and weary, but proud and dignified even after a life lived with a lot of difficulty and pain. With all of the news about the closing of the world's last manual typewriter assembly line, Godrej in India, and all of the buzz about typewriters in popular culture, I sense a great deal of nervousness in general about the advance of technology and what that means for people who are unwilling or unable to move on to the next step. I feel like this piece speaks of that worry in many ways."

State of the City - The Decade of San Antonio: A Big City transforming into a Great City 1/28/10
Mayor Julián Castro presented his first State of the City Address on Thursday, January 28, 2010, and proclaimed San Antonio as a city on the move that will vault forward economically in the coming decade.
"This is the decade of San Antonio, the decade of our emergence as an economic powerhouse nationally and internationally," Castro said. "We'll get there by building up brainpower and opportunity, making vibrant our public spaces, and getting the fundamentals of city government right."
Mayor Castro told a record crowd of more than 900 business and community leaders that his administration will not hide from the city's most difficult issues, which include raising the educational attainment level of the local workforce and investing in the city's urban core.
"Great cities are defined by their downtowns. San Antonio must invest in downtown and make it a magnet for residents and visitors alike," Castro said. "In these next few years, we will put a new streetcar system on the ground, redevelop our beloved Hemisfair, and enhance our Riverwalk to breathe new life into our downtown."
On Jobs:
"The top priority for 2010 is creating jobs for San Antonians. Our city has fared better than most American communities during this downturn, but we must work to fare better. 20,000 net new jobs in 2010 is the goal."
Green Economy:
"We must embrace new economic opportunities. San Antonio can and should become a leader in the green economy by investing in green job training, incentivizing green manufacturing and leading the way in the use of renewables to meet our energy needs."

Thank you.
Thank you very much for that introduction, Carri. You've already shown in your short time wonderful leadership here at the Chamber. I want to thank you and Richard Perez and all the folks at the Chamber for your tremendous leadership in the city. I particularly enjoyed the opportunity to work with ya'll as we expand the Mentoring Matters initiatives, and make sure that most folks have had the opportunity to reach their dreams. And I want to thank all of ya'll for being here. Carri mentioned that there are over 900 folks here, and when they told me that yesterday, I thought that this event must have been billed as “C.P.S. Energy, Behind-the-Scenes.” [ Laughter ] Or something to draw folks here.
But really, I believe that there is tremendous energy here in San Antonio in 2010. I believe that 2010 marks the beginning of the decade of San Antonio. This is the decade that we will emerge as an economic powerhouse across the nation and across the world, a place that people are looking toward for leadership, a place that people are taking notice of, a place that is in perfect position to seize the opportunity of tomorrow. It has been my absolute privilege to serve as your mayor for the last seven months. These days have been exciting ones, they've been long ones, but they've been well worthwhile because of the work of many, many folks, a couple of which I'd like to just recognize right now.
The first is, and I'd like to ask them all to stand up, the best city council that we've had in years, our San Antonio city council, please, if you would, stand up. I see Councilwoman Cisneros, Councilwoman Taylor, Councilwoman Ramos, Councilman Cortez, Councilman Medina, Councilman Lopez, Councilman Rodriguez, Councilman Williams, Councilwoman Chan, and Councilman Clamp. Thank ya'll very much.
I was, of course, not in office for four years, and in that time we had one of the best mayors in America, Phil Hardberger, who did a wonderful job of laying out a vision and a foundation for us to build on, and I'd like to recognize him as well. Thank you very much, Mayor Hardberger, for being here.
[ Applause ]
Everybody says that we have the best city manager in America, and seven months ago I got a chance to start testing that for myself, and I got to tell you, it's the truth. Sheryl Sculley has done an absolutely wonderful job as city manager, and she's really, and I think that Phil would agree with this, she is the reason that we look so good being mayor. I hope she'll stand up and be recognized. Thank you very much, Sheryl, for your work.
[ Applause ]
I remember coming to a couple of chamber events over the last few years, and Nelson Wolff would always tell this joke about being -- I don't know whether it was him not being the old mayor anymore or the young mayor, or I guess being about the same age as Phil. These days I know that I'm the young mayor, and he's the older county judge but has been a terrific partner and collaborator and one of the reasons that our city does so well. Thank you very much, Nelson, for your leadership. I'd like to recognize you as well.
[ Applause ]
And then I want to recognize my own staff. I see many of them here from Robbie Greenblum who couldn’t be here today to Jaime Castillo, Frances Gonzalez, Jed Maebius. I see Christian Archer, Roland Garza, Sarah McLor

The Warehouse - Letus Extreme Short Film - HDTV
I went back to the old warehouse by my home, this time with three other people. I had to shoot a short film here, with actors. “Left for Dead”, a short I shot alone here, just was not good enough. It was visual, but it held little story or substance. So we made a short at the rotten and creepy building.
Before you read further, understand that this film had a budget of $0.00. I shot this yesterday and edited it this morning.
Joe, Adam and Anthony met me at a shopping plaza about half a mile from the warehouse. We grabbed a coffee and I let them to the location. I traveled alone, my car was filled to the ceiling with equipment.
I had packed my Sony HDV HVR-Z1U with the Letus35 Extreme, a bunch of film lenses, my dolly system, my jib, wireless mics, batteries, a Vinten tripod, a generator, a light kit, a fog machine, one pound of Boars Head roast beef and some chicken guts.
As our two cars entered the dirt road that led to the decaying structure, I looked in the rearview to be sure no one was following us. This place is not posted, but it was dangerous. I was worried that one of use would leave with a flat tire. We ran over enough boards with rusted nails and broken glass to puncture a tire on a front-end loader.
This was my first “actor” film and I looked forward to working with director and filmmaker, Joe Francazio. Had had done this sort of thing before, but never with me as the DP.
I had known Adam for years. He was my utility at Boston Celtics TV network games and he too had made a few student films. Adam brought along his friend and actor Anthony. This was my first time meeting the guy. I liked Anthony immediately. Professional, dry witted and perfect for the part was had casted for him
We entered the warehouse with just an outline I had written up the night before. I was drinking moonshine I got from a guy I hardly knew and this white lightning seemed to open my mind. We had no script. I was confident that Joe would be able to put it all together on site, while I directed the visual aspects of the film.
We moved around the warehouse using ECM-77b lav mics with wireless belt packs for sound. The entire film was shot using the same 28mm f2.8 $30 Korean lens I used to shoot “Left for Dead”. I even left a polarizer filter on the entire time to keep it dark. Some of the shots were bumped to 9dB gain, but the grainy blacks added to the atmosphere of the picture.
We used no lights. Every shot in the short was available light. I really liked using the beams of sunlight to backlight the actors. I did chase the sun in the final shot at the end and wished that I had fired up the genny and back lit Anthony while he laid dead on the ground. The beam of sun I was using moved to damn quick as we set up dolly track.
The fog machine died yet again and we went without the desired smoky beams-of-light atmosphere. The generator stayed off almost the entire time.
This shoot was rushed. I had to be at a job in a few hours to shoot behind the scenes of a hockey tournament held in Boston. Joe was excellent and kept the shoot on track and continued to feed the actors dialogue. Joe knew exactly what was needed and we only shot what we planned on using in the short.
The shoot lasted just 3.5 hours. I edited the film in just under 2 hours. I was a breeze to edit because everything was right in front of me. All shots were done in chronological order, with the exception of two and in many scenes we nailed the take after two or three attempts. All audio you hear in the film was also recorded inside the warehouse. I had everything I needed in my edit browser ready to be dragged to the timeline.
At the end of the film, Joe was the creature and was pulling that $10 a pound roast beef from inside Anthony’s jacket. Joe can’t stand roast beef, even if it was expensive Boars Head Brand!
One strange thing that happened outside the warehouse was someone or something got into Joe’s car and went though his stuff. Nothing was stolen and nobody saw anything. This event could not be explained.
A few bricks fell and nearly took out one of the actors and once Anthony was killed off, he busied himself by trying to add to the graffito-tag using old rusted stray paint cans.
One shot that I wished I could have gotten was the lone lit and burning cigarette covered with blood left in the center of a room in the warehouse. Adam would have stumbled upon this and picked it up calling for Anthony. The reason we could not get this shot was because Anthony had smoked his last butt and the rest of us were non-smokers.
I hope to put up many more of these projects with the help of Joe Francazio and soon, creative writer and actor, Chris Nicini. I am sure I will also work again with Adam and Anthony.
Edited with Final Cut Pro and color corrected with “color corrector 3-way” filter. No vignette or color grading done with this short (using Magic Bullet Looks) because I ran out of time to meet my deadline.
