Gordon Daniel Hayward^[1] (born March 23, 1990) is an American professional basketball player who plays for the Utah Jazz of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played college basketball at Butler University in Indianapolis for two seasons before leaving for the NBA. Hayward emerged as a superstar in his sophomore (second) year, leading his team to a runner-up finish in the 2010 NCAA Tournament.^[2] He was selected by the Utah Jazz with the ninth overall pick in the 2010 NBA Draft.

Early years and high school[link]

Hayward's unusual skill set—Pat Forde, then of ESPN.com, called him "The guy who learned how to play like a guard but now has the size of a power forward"—was largely the result of his father's misconception about his future growth.^[3]

His father, Gordon Scott Hayward, is 5'10" (1.78 m), as is his mother Jody. Believing that their son was destined to be average sized, his father, according to Forde, "continually pushed his son to develop a guard's skill set."^[3] The younger Hayward's first appearance in the sports pages was not in basketball but in tennis; he and his twin sister Heather were featured in a regional edition of the Indianapolis Star when they played mixed doubles together at the Indiana State Open in 2005. Heather had already played #1 singles for their high school team, and Gordon Daniel would follow in his sister's footsteps the next year; at the time, they hoped to attend their parents' alma mater of Purdue University.^[4] Although Gordon's first love was basketball, he would later recall, "I looked at the future and figured playing basketball in college wasn't realistic."^[4] In fact, as a 5'11" (1.80 m) freshman, he seriously considered quitting basketball entirely to focus on tennis; his mother persuaded him to stay with the sport one more year.^[1]

The twins' plans changed when the younger Gordon underwent an unexpected growth spurt. He shot up to 6'4 as a sophomore and two years after he almost abandoned basketball, he had grown to 6'7" (2.01 m); he reached 6'8" (2.03 m) as a senior,^[3][4] and reportedly added another inch at Butler (though the NBA lists him at 6'8").^[3] He would soon have profiles on recruiting websites in both tennis and basketball. Gordon ultimately received three scholarship offers—one from nearby IUPUI, another from Purdue, and one from Butler. He ultimately chose Butler because the Bulldogs' 6:30 am practices would not interfere with his planned major of computer engineering and because Heather would be able to play tennis there.^[1] While he verbally committed to Butler as a junior, he skipped AAU basketball during the following summer because he wanted to put in enough tennis practice to contend for a state high school title in his senior year. He had a 26–3 record in singles that year, but lost in the state tournament.

Hayward attended Brownsburg High School in Brownsburg, Indiana. In his senior year (2007–08), Hayward was named first team All-State and led Brownsburg to the Indiana Class 4A state championship. In the 4A state title game, Hayward hit the game-winning layup at the buzzer to defeat Marion High School 40–39.^[5] Hayward averaged 18.0 points, 8.4 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game as a senior.^[6]

College career[link]

Hayward unexpectedly made an instant impact in his freshman year (2008–09). Butler had lost four starters from a 30-win season and were picked fifth in the Horizon League.^[7] However, the Bulldogs went 26–5 and won the Horizon League. Hayward averaged 13.1 points and 6.5 rebounds per game and was named Horizon Newcomer of the Year and first team All-Conference.

In the offseason, Hayward was selected to Team USA for the 2009 FIBA Under-19 World Championship in Auckland, New Zealand. Playing for Pittsburgh coach Jamie Dixon, Hayward was a surprise star for the Championship squad, averaging 10 points and 5.7 rebounds per game. At the conclusion of the tournament, Hayward was named to the "All-Star Five" of the event, with teammate Tyshawn Taylor.^[8]

After raising his profile in the FIBA tournament, Hayward was named to numerous preseason All-America teams, and was a preseason candidate for the Wooden Award and the Naismith Award prior to the 2009–10 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. He was also named preseason All-Horizon League.

During the 2009–10 season, Hayward was the only player to finish in the Horizon League's top five in both scoring and rebounding; he was also in the league's top 10 in field goal percentage, free throw percentage, blocked shots, offensive rebounding, defensive rebounding (in which he led the league), and minutes per game.^[9] At the end of the regular season, he was named the Horizon League Player of the Year.^[10] Hayward was also named a third-team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American.^[11] In the NCAA Tournament, Hayward was named the MVP of the West Region as he led Butler to the National Championship game. In the championship game against Duke he missed a game-winning, buzzer-beating, half-court shot, which hit the backboard and rim, and would have given Butler their very first NCAA championship.^[12]

Leaving for the NBA[link]

When Hayward first emerged as a star at the World U-19s, and agents started leaving messages with his parents, they expressed both surprise and concern. His father felt unprepared for the process of counseling his son through the draft process, while his mother felt that their son was not yet spiritually ready to handle the temptations of the NBA and was not convinced that he was good enough to play in the league.^[1] Eventually, his parents decided that his father would learn about the draft and his mother would "put it in the Lord's hands and pray about it."^[13] While his father talked with agents and other players who had left early, Butler coach Brad Stevens talked with NBA scouts and general managers; both eventually came to the conclusion that Gordon Hayward was projected as a top-20 pick in the 2010 NBA Draft even before Butler's NCAA tournament run.^[13] As his parents left Lucas Oil Stadium after the NCAA final, they had one final exchange regarding their son's basketball future. His mother said, "If God wanted him to go to the NBA, he would have hit the shot," but his father responded, "What else is he going to do, get Butler all the way back to the final and hit the shot?"^[13]

On April 14, 2010, Hayward's father confirmed to the Indianapolis Star that his son would submit his name for consideration in the 2010 draft, but he would not immediately hire an agent.^[14] While the younger Hayward was dividing his time between his final examinations and physical preparation, his father created a highly detailed two-page questionnaire that he gave to prospective agents. Mark Bartelstein, who survived his father's grilling and became Gordon Hayward's agent, would later say, "It was the most incredibly thorough process I've been through in 25 years. His parents didn't want to leave any stone unturned."^[13]

Hayward had until May 8 to withdraw from the draft and retain his college eligibility. However, on the day before the withdrawal deadline, he announced that he would stay in the draft and give up his remaining college eligibility. At the time he announced for the draft, he was widely expected to be selected in the top 20 picks, and that assessment did not change before the deadline. When announcing that he was leaving for the NBA, Hayward said that he planned to eventually complete his degree. On June 24, 2010, Hayward was selected as the ninth overall pick in the NBA draft by the Utah Jazz.^[2] His hometown team, the Indiana Pacers, selected just one pick later but Hayward seemed happy about going to Utah. In an interview with Craig Sager he remarked "I know the players there (in Utah) play hard. That's what's going to be expected of me." Regarding not being drafted by the Pacers: "I'm just excited to go where I've gone. It was a dream to play for the Pacers growing up, but I think it was a dream of all little boys in Indiana. Just because you grew up watching them. But it was also a dream to play in the NBA. To be able to put on that Utah Jazz jersey will be something very special". Despite having needs in the front court, the Jazz picked Hayward for his athleticism, ball handling skills, and versatility. Both Kevin O'Connor and Jerry Sloan commented that Hayward was a very "smart player that knew the game really well".

Gordon Hayward was the first Bulldog to be selected in the NBA Draft since 1950, when Ralph O'Brien was drafted in the 6th round by the Indianapolis Olympians.

NBA[link]

Hayward played in 72 games during his rookie season with the Utah Jazz, averaging 5.4 points per game and shooting 47 percent from 3-point range. Early in the season, he played sparingly for the Jazz, but he earned more minutes later in the year and responded with strong play in the team's last few games. He outplayed Kobe Bryant in Utah's stunning upset of the Los Angeles Lakers on April 5, making several clutch plays in the final minutes of an 86-85 victory.^[15] Hayward finished with 22 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists, and his defense forced Bryant into a terrible performance (7 turnovers and just 6-of-18 shooting from the floor). Hayward finished the season with a career-high 34 points in a 107-103 win against the rival Denver Nuggets.^[16]

On February 8, 2012, Hayward was selected to play in the 2012 Rising Stars Challenge. He was drafted to play for Team Chuck. In the game, Hayward recorded fourteen points and Team Chuck won the game.^[17]

Delonte Maurice West (born July 26, 1983, in Washington, D.C.) is an American professional basketball player for the Dallas Mavericks of the NBA.

High school career[link]

West went to Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Greenbelt, Maryland, where he excelled at basketball. He led the Raiders to their first tournament appearance. They made it to the Maryland 4A championship, where Delonte had 22 points and 8 rebounds, but the Raiders lost 70–58. He was named Washington Post All Met Basketball Player of the Year due to his averages of 20.2 points, 6.5 rebounds, 3.9 assists, and 3.1 steals per game.^[1] He scored double figures in all but one game his senior season. He then committed himself to Saint Joseph's University.

College career[link]

At Saint Joseph's University he formed what was widely regarded as the best backcourt in the country along with Wooden and Naismith Award winner Jameer Nelson, averaging 18.9 points and 6.7 assists per game and shooting 41% from three-point range as a junior. His efforts helped the Hawks to go 27–0 in the regular season, and earn an Elite Eight appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Saint Joseph's finished the season at 30–2.^[2]

NBA career[link]

West chose to leave St. Joe's after his junior campaign and was selected by the Boston Celtics as the 24th pick in the 2004 NBA Draft. In his first season he struggled with injuries, playing a total of just 39 games, mostly coming off the bench. He averaged 4.5 points, 1.7 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game. After making the transition to point guard in his rookie season, West was named the starting point guard at the beginning of the 2005–06 season by head coach Doc Rivers.

In 2005–06, West averaged 11.8 PPG, 4.1 RPG and 4.6 APG. On February 12, 2006, he was named to represent the Celtics on the sophomore team for the Rookie Challenge at NBA All-Star Weekend. Coincidentally, he replaced his college teammate Jameer Nelson, who withdrew because of injuries.

West was moved to the shooting guard spot in the 2006–07 season, but showed signs of difficulty early in the season. He was later moved back to the point guard position. West had some clutch shots, including a game-winning buzzer-beater against the Charlotte Bobcats on November 8, 2006, and a game-tying three pointer with 4 seconds remaining in regulation to bring the game into overtime against the New Jersey Nets on March 3, 2007. The Celtics would eventually win the game against the Nets. The next day against the Minnesota Timberwolves, West scored a career-high 31 points and made a career-high 12 free throw shots, in a double overtime Celtics victory. West scored all 31 of his points in that game during the second half and the two overtimes. At the end of the 2006–07 season, he was sharing starting minutes with Rajon Rondo.

2007–2008[link]

On June 28, 2007 (during the 2007 NBA Draft) the Celtics traded West to the Seattle SuperSonics, along with Jeff Green (their 5th overall pick) and Wally Szczerbiak in exchange for Ray Allen and Sonics' 35th overall pick Glen Davis.

On February 21, 2008, West was part of a three-team trade that sent him, Ben Wallace, Joe Smith and Wally Szczerbiak to the Cleveland Cavaliers.^[3] He was reunited with his Saint Joseph's teammate Dwayne Jones.

As a Cavalier, West played in 26 regular season games (starting all 26), and averaged 10.3 points, 4.5 assists, 3.7 rebounds and 1.1 steals. He had a season high 20 points against the Boston Celtics only six days after his trade to the Cavaliers and a season-high 11 assists on March 30, 2008 against the Philadelphia 76ers. For the entire season, West played in 61 games (starting 31) and averaged 8.3 points, 3.8 assists and 3.2 rebounds.

On April 27, 2008, West made perhaps the most clutch 3-pointer of his NBA career with 5.4 seconds left in a playoff game against the Washington Wizards, in Washington. His tiebreaking game-winner took the Cleveland Cavaliers to a 3–1 lead in this first round series.^[4] In 13 playoff games, West averaged 10.8 points, 4.2 assists, and 3.3 rebounds. West scored 21 points in both Game 3 and Game 5 against the Boston Celtics.

2008–2009[link]

On September 12, 2008, West signed a three-year $12.7 million contract with the Cavaliers. He was moved to the starting shooting guard position at the beginning of the season, due to the acquisition of Mo Williams.

He became a starter for the Cavaliers, who won a league-best and franchise-record 66 games during the regular season and went 39–2 at home. In addition to his role as the starting shooting guard, he also served as the backup point guard, manning the position when Mo Williams was not in the game. He emerged as a talented backcourt defensive player, guarding a variety of players ranging from the 6'3" Ben Gordon to the 6'10" Hedo Turkoglu. Offensively, he proved to be a capable outside shooter, with a field-goal percentage of 46% (and 40% on three-pointers), and maintained his reputation as an athletic and hard-nosed driver with the ball. West, Williams, Zydrunas Ilgauskas, and Anderson Varejão came together to form a supporting cast for franchise player LeBron James.

On March 2, 2009, against the Miami Heat, West set a career high with 8 steals.

In the playoffs, West's averages shot up to nearly 14 points per game, despite struggling with his 3-point shot much like his backcourt-mate Williams, whose shooting struggles in the playoffs were well documented. Further, the Cavs' lack of scoring punch on the bench forced West to take on extremely high minute loads. He averaged 42 minutes per game throughout the postseason, and in the Eastern Conference Finals against the Orlando Magic (which the Cavs lost in 6 games due in part to, again, outside shooting struggles from Williams and West) he played over 45 minutes per game, more than any other player in the series. In addition to this, he drew the defensive assignment of Hedo Turkoglu, who had a 7-inch height advantage, to allow James to play the "rover". West was able to stop Turkoglu's facilitation of the Magic offense in spurts, but the height advantage was too much, as Turkoglu helped to dominate the Cavalier defense throughout the series. West set a new career playoff high in points, with 22 in a losing effort in Game 6 against the Magic when the Cavs were eliminated.

2009–2010[link]

Over the 2009-10 season, Delonte West averaged 8.8 points in 25 minutes per game with only 3 games as starter for the Cavs. In the 2010 NBA Playoffs, the Cavaliers lost in the Conference Semifinals series to the Boston Celtics in six games. West averaged 6.7 points in the playoffs.

2010–2011[link]

After LeBron James left the Cavaliers to sign with the Miami Heat, the Cavaliers traded West, along with Sebastian Telfair, to the Minnesota Timberwolves for Ramon Sessions, Ryan Hollins, and a future draft pick. Minnesota waived West shortly after acquiring him. On September 1, 2010, the Boston Celtics signed West to a one-year contract to backup Rajon Rondo as a point guard. West was suspended for the first ten games of the 2010–11 season following a guilty plea to weapons charges in Maryland. For his 2010–11 season, West finished with 5.6 points per game, 0.8 steals per game, and 2.7 assists per game. He also shot .867 from the free throw line.

Legal problems[link]

On September 17, 2009 West was pulled over for a traffic violation while riding a 3-wheeled motorcycle. During this stop it was found that West had a 9mm Beretta pistol, .357 Magnum and a Remington 870 in a guitar case. He was arrested and had a court appearance on November 20.^[5] His trial was scheduled to be heard on February 18, 2010,^[6] but was postponed until July 21, 2010.^[7] West pleaded guilty to the traffic and weapons charges and was sentenced to electronic monitoring, unsupervised probation, and 40 hours of community service as well as psychological counseling.

In 2012, West admitted that his reputation around the NBA had been affected by a 2010 internet rumor that he had a sexual encounter with LeBron James's mother, Gloria.^[9]

Justin Hayward (born 14 October 1946, Swindon, Wiltshire, England) is an English musician, best known as singer, songwriter and guitarist in the rock band The Moody Blues.

Hayward was born in Dean Street, Swindon, Wiltshire, England and he was educated at Shrivenham School, Berkshire and The Commonweal School, in Swindon, Wiltshire.^[1]

Career[link]

When Hayward was 15 he was able to afford a Gibson guitar and a Vox amplifier through performing with local Swindon groups in clubs and dance halls playing mostly Buddy Holly songs. One of Hayward's early groups was All Things Bright, which opened for The Hollies and Brian Poole and the Tremeloes. At age 17, he signed a publishing contract as a songwriter with the skiffle artist and record producer Lonnie Donegan, a move Hayward later regretted as it meant the rights to all his songs written before 1974 would always be owned by Donegan's Tyler Music.^[2] In 1965 he answered an advertisement in Melody Maker and auditioned as guitarist for Marty Wilde and he went on to work with Wilde and his wife in The Wilde Three.

Hayward was recently involved in the remastering of The Moody Blues back catalogue for Universal Music.

The Moody Blues[link]

In 1966, after answering another ad in Melody Maker, this time placed by Eric Burdon of The Animals, Hayward was contacted by Mike Pinder of The Moody Blues after Burdon had passed on Hayward's letter and demo discs to Pinder. Within a few days Hayward had replaced departing Moody Blues vocalist and guitarist Denny Laine. Bassist John Lodge replaced temporary deputy Rod Clarke who had stood in for departed Bassist Clint Warwick at the same time.

After beginning by singing the old Blues inspired repertoire of The Moodies 1964-1965 era, Hayward's initial artistic contribution to The Moody Blues was his song 'Fly Me High' which was a Decca single early in 1967, this failed to chart but gave the revised band a new sound and direction, being more of an original contemporary track than the 'R & B' sound they had been largely producing up to that point.

Hayward's driving rocker 'Leave This Man Alone' was then used as 'B' side to the next Moodies single on Decca, backing Mike Pinder's 'Love And Beauty' (1967) the first Moodies record to feature the mellotron.

Hayward's and Lodge's integration into the Moody Blues along with Pinder's use of the Mellotron sparked greater commercial success and recognition for the band, transforming them into one of pop music's biggest-selling acts. Hayward says of Pinder: "Mike and the Mellotron made my songs work."

The 1967 album Days of Future Passed, one of the first and most influential symphonic rock albums, spawned the Hayward-penned singles "Tuesday Afternoon" and "Nights in White Satin". The latter record went on to sell over two million copies, charting three times in the UK (1967, 1972, and in 1979) and has been recorded by many other recording artists. Hayward's 'B' side song 'Cities' being an early ecology themed item.

Hayward became the group's main onstage figurehead over the 1967-1974 period, the most prolific songwriter and composer of several big singles hits for the band. During this time he wrote memorable album tracks such as: "Tuesday Afternoon" (originally the first half, with John Lodge's (Evening) Time to Get Away, of "'Forever Afternoon (Tuesday?)"), "The Actor", "Lovely to See You", "Never Comes the Day", "Gypsy (Of a Strange and Distant Time)", "It's Up To You", "Dawning is The Day","You Can Never Go Home", "The Story in Your Eyes" (a US chart hit), "New Horizons", "The Land of Make-Believe", and "Island"

Hayward wrote the band's UK #2 hit, "Question" as well as "Voices in the Sky", "Driftwood", "The Voice", "Blue World", "Your Wildest Dreams", "I Know You're Out There Somewhere", "English Sunset" and "December Snow"; in all, writing 20 of the group's 27 post-1967 singles.

In addition to handling the Lead vocals on his own compositions, Hayward also took a featured lead or co-lead vocal on other band members songs such as; "Dawn is A Feeling" (Pinder), "Gimmie A Little Something", "Isn't Life Strange", "Candle of Life" (Lodge), "After You Came", "I'll Be Level With You", "The Spirit". "Nothing Changes" (Edge) etc....

The Moodies attempts to come up with another specific 'hit single' during the 1967-68 period saw them record three other Hayward compositions; "Long Summer Days", "King and Queen" and "What Am I Doing Here?" all of which were then left unissued, but together with unissued songs by Mike Pinder and John Lodge later formed the 'studio side four' of Decca's 1977 release; Caught Live Plus Five which largely comprised a December 1969 Live Recording of a concert at The Royal Albert Hall (issued against the group's wishes).

Hayward also co-wrote album tracks with Ray Thomas - "Visions of Paradise", "Are You Sitting Comfortably", "Watching and Waiting", and much later "Never Blame the Rainbows for the Rain", plus later co-wrote many songs with John Lodge for The Moodies, notably "Gemini Dream" (a US Chart hit), "Meet Me Halfway", "Talkin' Talkin'", "Want To Be With You", "Once is Enough", "Strange Times","Sooner or Later (Walking on Air)" among others.

Hayward's songs have opened each of The Moodies albums in their 'post Mike Pinder era' since Long Distance Voyager in 1981, and his songs, both solo compositions and co-written with John Lodge, plus his lead vocals, harmony voice, and guitar playing have been a major overriding factor in the bands work and continued success since 1981.

Their album sales from 1978 to the present are more than 60 million. This is the regularly quoted total of their album sales, since the total sales of their albums before 1978 is disputed due to lack of official record company data,^[3] However the period 1967 to 1974 was when their albums (and singles) were charting highest in the UK and US plus worldwide (album track "Melancholy Man" made number one in France as a single in 1970) - Days of Future Passed topped the US album charts on re-issue in 1972, then was followed into the album charts by the new studio album Seventh Sojourn.

1974 onwards[link]

In 1974, the Moody Blues decided to take what ended up being a four-year break from performing and recording. Hayward continued working with Lodge and producer Tony Clarke, using musicians from the Moody Blues' label, Threshold, and sounding very much like the mother group. Together, they had a hit in 1975 with "Blue Guitar" (a Hayward recording with the band 10cc), and released an album titled Blue Jays.

In 1977 Justin recorded his first solo album Songwriter. He enjoyed international solo success in 1978 when he appeared on Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of The War of the Worlds concept album, which yielded his hits "Forever Autumn" and "The Eve of the War". Wayne later contributed to Hayward's 1980 album Night Flight.

Hayward issued a rare non album single "Marie" c/w "Heart of Steel' (Decca F13834) in April 1979, both sides composed by him, the 'A' side dedicated to his wife. These tracks were later included among the 'Bonus' tracks on a CD re-issue of his Songwriter solo album in 2004.

During the 1980s, Hayward composed and performed for film and television, including the theme song "It Won't Be Easy" for the 1987 BBC2 science fiction series Star Cops, "Something Evil, Something Dangerous" for the film Howling IV: The Original Nightmare, "Eternal Woman" for the film She and music for the animated television series The Shoe People.

In 1989, with producer-arranger Mike Batt, Hayward released Classic Blue, an album of pop standards written by other composers, set to orchestration arranged by Batt. Classic Blue included a cover version of Led Zeppelin's hit "Stairway to Heaven." Hayward's most recent solo album, The View from the Hill, was released in 1996, and a live recording, Live in San Juan Capistrano, followed in 1998.

Hayward contributed vocals to a song on Rick Wakeman's 1999 album Return to the Centre of the Earth.

In 2003 he sang along with other rock singers on another orchestral album, consisting of Moody Blues songs with the Frankfurt Rock Orchestra, titled Justin Hayward and Friends Perform the Hits of the Moody Blues (alternatively called Justin Hayward and Friends Sing the Moody Blues Classic Hits). Hayward was later involved in a legal dispute, now resolved, arguing he was not paid for his participation on the album.

In April 2006, Hayward took part in the stage tour of Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of The War of the Worlds, reprising his role in Autumn 2007 in Australia and in the UK in December 2007. He did so again in the UK in June 2009, and appeared on the tour in November and December 2010.^[4][5]

The Moody Blues, with Hayward, Lodge and original drummer Graeme Edge, continue to tour extensively and in a recent BBC World Service interview, Hayward and Lodge made it clear they have no plans to stop working, regarding it as "a privilege" to still be working in the music industry. In an interview, in 2005, Edge said if he remained in good health, he could go on for 10 more years.^[3]

On 10 December 2011 Hayward along with Ian Anderson from Jethro Tull and Bruce Dickinson from Iron Maiden played a concert together at Canterbury Cathedral.

For the most part, Hayward has used a red Gibson ES-335 ("main axe"), though he also uses other guitars in both performing and recording, including a 1955 Martin D-28 "Dreadnought", a James Olson six-string acoustic, a black Guild acoustic, a Squier Stratocaster (essentially an inexpensive Fender Stratocaster, as Squier is a subsidiary of Fender), a Fender Telecaster, a blonde Guild 12-string acoustic (tuned to "open C"), a 12-string Gibson acoustic (for "Question"), and in 1967 a black Gibson Les Paul. Between 1965 and 1968 he was without his Gibson 335 and relied on other instruments, most notably a 1964 Fender Telecaster and a hand-built 12-string guitar he had renovated for Donegan (he eventually bought this guitar from Donegan's widow). However, in an interview included on the Lovely to See You concert DVD (2005), Hayward says the 1963 Gibson 335 has been with him since 1967. Recently he has played a Collings D3 on stage and on recordings. Among other instruments, Hayward also played mandolin on A Question of Balance and sitar on "In Search of the Lost Chord".^[3]

Hayward married former model Ann Marie Guirron on 19 December 1969. Their daughter Doremi was born on 3 December 1972.

Awards[link]

Hayward was awarded the first of numerous awards from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) for songwriting in 1974. In 1985, the Moody Blues picked up the Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music, and in 1988 Hayward received the Novello, among other honours, for Composer of the Year (for "I Know You're Out There Somewhere"). In 2000, he was one of a handful of British artists to receive the "Golden Note" award for lifetime achievement by ASCAP. In 2004, Hayward was awarded the "Gold Badge" for lifetime achievement by the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors (BASCA).^[3]
