New recruits in training - Part one
Police officers have to be ready to deal with any situation they might encounter on patrol. So, to prepare them for life on the beat, all new recruits go through intensive training at Essex Police College in Chelmsford. As well as lessons on criminal offences, law and powers of arrest, the recruits are taught basic life support, defensive skills and how to search people and premises. During their training the new officers also complete community placements, practical traffic exercises and a visit to crown court. The film above is the first in a series of films in which we'll follow two new recruits, Pc Roxanne Wicks and Pc Ross Evins, through their training. Their journey begins with attestation, an oath made by all police officers to serve the Queen by upholding the law, and will end with a passing out parade in front of family and friends. Over the next few months we'll be following Pc Wicks and Pc Evins through the highs and lows of their training and finding out what it takes to become an Essex Police officer. For more information on training to be a police officer, visit the recruitment section of the website www.essex.police.uk/recruitment

Essex Police Helicopter (QH99) Take-Off
Essex Police Helicopter (Callsign QH99) takes off from the Kent Police Open Day at the Kent Police College in Maidstone. As you can see and hear the wind was gusty so this was impressive piloting. Unfortuantely I didn't know about the high speed flypast afterwards.... maybe next year. Feel free to hum the Airwolf theme tune while watching! ;) Kent Police: www.kent.police.uk or @kent_police (https Follow QH99: @qh99heli (www.twitter.com Apologies for the poor camerawork but it was taken with a compact camera and not a steadycam. :P

New recruits in training - Part two
Essex Police's new recruits are now more than half way through their training at Essex Police College. Since we last met Pc Roxanne Wicks and Pc Ross Evins, the trainee police officers have been kept busy with practical exercises in statement taking, first aid and searching people. They've also studied law and faced a series of testing exams. Next they'll be learning defensive skills, how to search property and embarking on a community placement. We'll catch up with the new recruits again soon.

New recruits in training - Part three
New recruits Pc Roxanne Wicks and Pc Ross Evins are now three quarters of the way through their training at Essex Police College. Since we last caught up with the trainee police officers, they've been on a community placement, taken part in a series of scenarios at Lakeside Shopping Centre designed to put their learning to the test and taken a trip to Kent Police's training college in Maidstone. The recruits have also been studying for exams, learning how to search property and understanding what to expect at crown court. There are only a few weeks to go until Pc Wicks and Pc Evins complete their training and 'pass out' in a special ceremony in front of family and friends. We'll next catch up with them after the ceremony as they prepare to become operational police officers patrolling the streets of Essex.

Essex Police responds to IPCC investigation
On behalf of Essex Police I would like to extend my sincere condolences to the family and friends of Jeanette Goodwin who was murdered by Martin Bunch on Sunday, July 24, 2011. I have met with members of Mrs Goodwin's family and discussed the findings of the IPCC report with them. Essex Police accepts the findings of the independent report. The report rightly identifies the failings made by Essex Police on Sunday, July 24, 2011 but it also highlights the positive steps taken by the force (including the arrest and refusal to release him on police bail) in response to the previous calls made by Jeanette Goodwin concerning Bunch's harassment of her prior to that date. I have apologised to Jeanette Goodwin's family for our failings on Sunday, July 24, 2011. The IPCC report found shortcomings in respect of four members of police staff and one acting police sergeant. The IPCC concluded that their actions did not amount to misconduct but did require debriefing with a senior officer to address performance measures, which has been done. The initial call on Sunday, July 24, 2011, by Mrs Goodwin, should have been treated more seriously, and a unit dispatched. Too much emphasis was placed on Mrs Goodwin saying she was going out and would not be in until 4.30pm, rather than her stating she was scared of Bunch. There is however no way of knowing if our actions at this time had been different whether Mrs Goodwin would still have been murdered. The report details another domestic abuse ...

THE SCARY GUY FRSA WORKS WITH THE ESSEX POLICE IN ENGLAND 2012
The Scary Guy visits Essex.
An inspirational American speaker with a striking appearance visited schools throughout Essex to encourage young people to accept each other for who they are.
The Scary Guy, a former tattoo artist whose mission is to eliminate hate, violence and prejudice worldwide, came to Essex for the second time in January to visit six schools in Harlow, Braintree, Chelmsford and Maldon.
The 6ft tall, 20 stone visitor whose face and body are covered in tattoos grabbed the attention of pupils before encouraging them to put prejudice and intolerance aside by sharing some of his personal experiences.
The 57-year-old was born in Minnesota and owned three tattoo shops before legally changed his name to The Scary Guy in 1998, selling his shops and going on the road to meet young people.
The inspirational speaker has worked alongside prisons and detention centres, schools and colleges and government agencies and was invited back to Essex this month after his first visit in March 2011 to dissuade young people from becoming involved in gangs.

Travellers' Eviction in Basildon
On Tuesday 7th September, the eviction of seven Traveller families began at the Hovefields site in Essex. At 8 in the morning bailiffs Constant & Co, accompanied by police, arrived at the site and began telling families to leave their homes. The bailiffs occupied a pitch at the site, which they made a base for their operations, and then proceeded to bring in diggers to smash plots of ground, preventing later re-entry.
Many individuals attended the eviction as legal observers and monitors of human rights and health and safety. They documented the eviction, and identified numerous breaches of international human rights law, including the failure to provide alternative housing, the disruption to children's education, and the failure to keep heavy machinery within the safety perimeter. There were no authorized government representatives present and bailiffs and police refused to facilitate legal observers' access to the site. When these issues were brought up with the police overseeing the eviction process, they refused to respond, maintaining that they were there to prevent breaches of the peace by those resisting eviction, no matter the legality of the operation itself.
Two supporters were arrested early in the day, and a seventy-two year old man, John Lee, had his nose fractured after his face was smashed into his caravan before legal observers arrived.
At the end of the day, one pitch had been bulldozed, and three families had left the site. The other four families whose pitches are being evicted stayed, though the bailiffs had already cut off access to electricity and water for the majority of the site. The families who left the Hovefields site went to a nearby unoccupied site that had previously been earmarked by the national government as a potential resettlement area; but this move was refused by Basildon Council, eager to chase the Traveller community out of Essex. Police arrived at 9 this morning with a 3 hour ultimatum for the families to move on. The eviction is likely to be ongoing through this week.
Dale Farm (Essex), the biggest Travellers community, is next under threat (it's going to happen within the next 3 weeks) and it's the same bailiff company involved. They see Hovefields as a dry run for what is going to be the biggest eviction in British history.

Reducing the risk of catalytic converter theft
Vehicle security is just as important as making sure your home is secure. Metal theft, including the theft of catalytic converters, is a national problem and Essex Police is working to tackle those responsible in our county. Officers are running overt and covert patrols and working with local scrap yards to catch those responsible but drivers of high clearance vehicles, on which catalytic converters are more exposed, are being reminded to think about security. In the film above Crime Reduction Advisor Stephen Armson-Smith talks through some of the steps drivers of vehicles like vans, 4 x 4s and motor homes can take to help reduce the risk of catalytic converter theft. If you know someone is stealing catalytic converters, call Essex Police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. If you spot any suspicious activity around vehicles, please call Essex Police on 999 as soon as possible.
