Sir Frederick Ashton - Discusses His Life and Work [Part 1]
In this interview Sir Frederick Ashton discusses his life and work, and his favourite pieces of music. There's lots in here to interest, including things such Ashton saying the 'Fred step' is included in all his ballets, even if heavily disguised by shaping it unexpectedly to the music. He says the inclusion is a good luck thing. Enjoy!

Sir Frederick Ashton - A Most Lovably Monsterous Ugly Sister
This is an exercise in pure self-indulgence! I'm not sure how much you might love/like/hate the whole thing of English Music Hall Dames but I remember, with such intense fondness, Sir Frederick Ashton's lovable and deliciously monstrous Ugly Sister in the Royal Ballet's 'Cinderella' that, when I bought a DVD of a 1969 performance yesterday, I just couldn't resist an upload today. The Cinderella here, as you'll probably know, is Antoinette Sibley, Prince Charming, Sir Anthony Dowell and the other Ugly Sister, Sir Robert Helpmann. Wayne Sleep is the smaller and 'Napoleonic' suitor - that French-English rivalry is still, extraordinarily, never far below the surface. And I'm sure that Ashton's ugly sister has a more than passing resemblance to the French Queen Marie Antoinette. I do hope you like this one too!

New behind-the-scenes rehearsal footage!
On the 4-5 June 2009, Dame Antoinette Sibley and Sir Anthony Dowell came to Birmingham Royal Ballet's studios. They were there to coach dancers who would this season be performing the roles of Titania and Oberon in Sir Frederick Ashton's The Dream - roles which Dame Antoinette and Sir Anthony originally created.
With thanks to everyone involved in this, especially Marion Tait for taking extra time out to record her interview segments.

Widely considered as one of the last century's most prolific and important choreographers, Frederick Ashton brought an unmistakably lyric style to British ballet. The Dream was Ashton's contribution towards Britain's celebration of the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's birth. In it, he condenses the plot of A Midsummer Night's Dream to the forest scenes only, focusing on the fairy kingdom of Oberon and Titania and the lovers and rustics who stumble into it one moonlit, magical night. The exquisitely calibrated choreography bears Ashton's customary hallmark of precision, lightness and fluency and demonstrates his gift for storytelling. The one-act work, recorded live at the Orange County Performing Arts Centre, California, was staged by Anthony ...

Sir Frederick Ashton - 'Foyer de Danse' (1932)
This is film of Sir Frederick Ashton performing in 'Foyer de Danse' in 1932. I've previously uploaded part of this same film - with Alicia Markova dancing a bit of one of her solos in the ballerina role. My earlier upload is 'Glimpses of Alicia Markova in the 1930s - Ballet Club and the Vic-Wells Ballet'. Judy and David kindly tell us, the others in the cast were Walter Gore, Prudence Hyman, Betty Cuff, Elisabeth Schooling, Suzette Morfield and Elizabeth Ruxton. And Numberonefilmfan kindly passed on that this was filmed at the Mercury Theatre, London, by Walter and Pearl Duff. And that the choreography was by Frederick Ashton, inspired by Degas' ballet paintings. Costumes were by William Chappell, after Degas. And that the film was at least 16 minutes, from the listing in the New York Public Library. I must start searching about for the other thirteen plus minutes! Enjoy.
