There are various names of God in Christianity. Some names refer to one person of the Trinity, while others refer to the entire Trinity. There are a number of names that can refer either to God the Father or to the entire Trinity, and often "God" is used directly. Many other terms, such as "The Creator", is usually thought of as God's attributes rather than names. "The Lord" is also a common Christian name for God.

Some Christians use the Hebrew names Elohim, El-Shaddai, and Adonai.

Names based on the tetragrammaton are also in use. Jehovah appears in Tyndale's Bible, the King James Version, and other translations from that time period and later. Jehovah's Witnesses make consistent use of Jehovah.Yahweh is used in the modern Sacred Name Movement, such as the Assemblies of Yahweh.

Many English translations of the Bible translate the tetragrammaton as LORD, following the Jewish practice of substituting the spoken Hebrew word 'Adonai' (translated as 'Lord') for YHWH when read aloud. The Septuagint mainly used the Greek word Kyrios (Greek: Κύριος, meaning 'lord') to translate YHWH. As this was the Old Testament of the Early Church, the Christian practice of translating the divine name as 'Lord' derives directly from it.

In Christianity, God is the eternal being that created and preserves the world. Christians believe he is transcendent (that is eternal and not controlled at all by part of creation). However, over against Deism, he is also considered to be immanent in various ways in the different areas of his creation; but his immanence is not pantheistic since his being is not the substance of the created universe.

The Christian Bible always speaks of God in personal terms— as one who is, who speaks, who sees, hears, acts, loves, and has a will and personality. He is represented in Scripture as being primarily concerned with people and their salvation. In philosophical language the "attributes of God", are usually held to include those of holiness, justice, omnipotence, omniscience, omnibenevolence, omnipresence and immortality. However, some theologians prefer to say: "God is holy, just, ...." rather than use language which might imply that God is 'measured' by an standard external to his own being.

God is understood by trinitarian Christians as God the Father, God the Son and the Holy Spirit; an infinite Godhead of three distinct persons (the term is used "not because it expresses what we want to say, but because we must say something".) McGrath explains the doctrine as the outcome "of sustained and critical reflection on the pattern of divine activity revealed in Scripture, and continued in Christian experience". Scripture contains no explicit doctrine of the Trinity; rather, it bears witness to a God who demands to be understood in a Trinitarian manner".Nontrinitarian denominations define the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit in various ways.

Names of God, or Holy Names, describe a form of addressing God present in liturgy or prayer of various world religions. Prayer involving the Holy Name or the Name of God has become established as common spiritual practice in both Western and Eastern spiritual practices. A number of traditions have lists of many names of God, many of which enumerate the various qualities of the Supreme Being.

The English word "god" is used by multiple religions as a noun or name to refer to different deities.

Ancient cognate equivalents for the word "god" include proto-Semitic el, Hebrew elohim "God or/of gods", Arabic 'ilah "(a or the) god", and Biblical Aramaic 'Elaha "God". The personal or proper name for God in many of these languages may either be distinguished from such attributes, or homonymic. For example, in Judaism the Holy Name is sometimes related to the ancient Hebrew ehyeh, "I AM". In Hinduism the term Brahman or Parabrahman is often used, while in other cases the proper name for a deity is given special significance as a true name of God; or incorporated from earlier beliefs, as in the case of the Native American appellation Gitche Manitou.
