http://dailyreckoning.com FULL TRANSCRIPT BELOW: Milton Friedman is roundly regarded as one of the great economists of the 20th century. But his view of the Bretton Woods system was all wrong. And the current mess of floating exchange rates proves that. Today, Lewis Lehrman explains how the current monetary system pits every country against each other in a financial "race to the bottom"... "He was a great advocate in writing and in speaking of the free market. He was not so much pro-business as he was pro-free-market and that, of course, is a very good thing. He was as opposed to crony capitalism as some of us younger men were. Totally interested in a free-price mechanism and letting the market do an equitable job of allocating resources. "He was recognized by a group of insular Norwegians by giving him the Nobel Prize and it’s a great distinction. In the area of domestic policy, domestic free-market economics, I see him as a great teacher of mine. "In the world of international economics, International Monetary Order, on the issue of what characterizes the best institution for developing and maintaining stable money or stable purchasing power over the long run for people from all walks of life. Let’s say a century where a dollar will purchase approximately the same random assortment of goods as it might have 100 years ago. I think Milton Friedman did make a very serious, but sincere, error. He wanted to blow up the Bretton Woods system, not because Bretton Woods was a flawed gold exchange standard, but he believed that floating and flexible exchange rates were the optimum or the best arrangement between trading nations and the currencies with which they operated. "I think this was a terrible mistake and the evidence, I think, everywhere to be seen. We are now, because of floating exchange rates, engaged in currency wars all over the world. Every country is in a race to the bottom to try and depreciate it’s currency in order to beggar its neighbor that is to say in order to subsidize its export industries and export its unemployment. Under an International Gold Standard such a 'beggar my neighbor' approach, such a currency war so long as the International Gold Standard is maintained is not only impossible, but it’s against the rules of treaty. That doesn’t mean that people can’t violate treaties, it’s just that, that what laws is for. Law can’t keep people from murdering one another but it has a preventive effect."

Visiting Scotland: Also check out http://www.wandertooth.com/budget-travel-tips-for-isle-of-skye-isle-of-lewis-and-harris-scotland/ When you're planning your visit to Scotland you can't forget to include at least one of the islands on your itinerary. We pondered of them all and the different ways in which to get there and eventually decided on The Isle of Skye and the Isle of Lewis and Harris. I admit I was quite nervous about driving on the opposite side from what I am used to and after being in Edinburgh for a month, I was extra nervous about city driving. We decided to take the bus to Inverness, a smaller city, and rent a car from there. I am glad we did because we just wouldn't have been able to explore the islands the way we did, with lot's of time, freedom and flexibility if we hadn't. I adjusted quite quickly after a couple of laps around the hotel parking lot and away we went. Reaching for the seatbelt on the wrong side or constantly wanting to rest the wrong arm while driving were the only adjustments I really had to make, there are constant reminders and the signs are clear so there was no trouble whatsoever. Furthermore, once you are on the islands, the roads for the most part, are single track and other cars are few and far between. For more tips about visiting the Isle of Skye and the Isle of Lewis and Harris, check out our blog: http://www.wandertooth.com/budget-travel-tips-for-isle-of-skye-isle-of-lewis-and-harris-scotland/

Lewis (Scottish Gaelic: Leòdhas, pronounced [ʎɔː.əs̪], also Isle of Lewis) is the northern part of Lewis and Harris, the largest island of the Western Isles or Outer Hebrides (an archipelago) of Scotland. The total area of Lewis is 683 square miles (1,770 km2).
Lewis is, in general, the lower lying part of Lewis and Harris, with the other part, Harris, being more mountainous. The flatter, more fertile land means Lewis contains the largest settlement, Stornoway, and three-quarters of the population of the Western Isles. Beyond human habitation, the island's diverse habitats are home to an assortment of flora and fauna, such as the golden eagle, red deer and seals and are recognised in a number of conservation areas.
Lewis is of Presbyterian tradition with a rich history, having once been part of the Norse Kingdom of Mann and the Isles. Today, life is very different from elsewhere in Scotland with Sabbath observance, the Gaelic language and peat cutting retaining more importance than elsewhere. Lewis has a rich cultural heritage as can be seen from its myths and legends as well as the local literary and musical traditions.

He is also currently the chairman of The Lehrman Institute, a public policy research and grant making foundation founded in 1972.
