Roy Kenzie Kiyooka, OC (January 18, 1926 – January 4, 1994) was an influential^{[citation needed]} Canadian arts teacher, painter, poet, photographer, and multi-media artist of national and international acclaim.

Biography[link]

A Nisei or second generation Japanese Canadian, Kiyooka was born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan and raised in Calgary, Alberta. His parents were Harry Shigekiyo Kiyooka and Mary Kiyoshi Kiyooka. Her samurai father was the still-famous, 17th head of the Muso Jikiden Eishin-ryu school of swordsmanship. Roy Kiyooka's brother Harry Mitsuo Kiyooka also became an abstract painter, a professor of art, and sometimes curator of his brother's work. Harry Kiyoka taught art at the University of Alberta at Calgary, now The University of Calgary, from 1961 to 1988.

In 1942, after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the family was uprooted and moved into rural Alberta. Roy Kiyooka did not finish high school.

From 1946 to 1949, he studied with Jock Macdonald and Illingworth Holey Kerr at the Provincial Institute of Technology and Art. With a scholarship, he was able in 1955 to go to Mexico for eight months to study under James Pinto at the Instituto Allende in San Miguel de Allende. In 1956 he began teaching at the Regina College School of Art. Regina was a center for his style of painting, but Kiyooka left for Vancouver in 1959 and so did not become a member of the Regina 5-group.

At the time, Kiyooka was very impressed with Clement Greenberg's ideas. In the summers from 1957 to 1959 he took part in the Emma Lake Artists' Workshops of the University of Saskatchewan, and there worked with Will Barnet and Barnett Newman.

From 1960 to 1964, he was at the Vancouver School of Art (now Emily Carr University of Art and Design), from 1965 to 1970 at the Sir George Williams University in Montréal (now Concordia University). In 1971–72 he taught at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, Halifax and then, from 1973 to 1991, at the Fine Arts Department of the University of British Columbia in Vancouver.

He was made a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 1965. In the same year he represented Canada in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and won a Silver Medal at the Eighth Sao Paulo Biennial. In 1975, the Vancouver Art Gallery organized a twenty-five-year retrospective of his work. In 1978 he was named an Officer of the Order of Canada.

At the end of the 1960s, Kiyooka had lost faith in modernism and stopped painting. He began to use performance, film and music. He also began to use photography. But in the early 1970s he also produced two series of sculptures, the StoneDGloves: Alms for Soft Palms, shown at the National Gallery in Ottawa and the 16 Cedar Laminated Sculpture series, shown alongside the Ottoman/Court Suite of silk-screen prints, at the Bau Xi Gallery in Vancouver in May 1971.

Roy A. Sommer (born April 5, 1957 in Oakland, California) was a professional ice hockey player who played for the Edmonton Oilers of the NHL. He also served as an assistant coach of the San Jose Sharks. Since 1998, he has been the head coach of the Worcester Sharks, the American Hockey League affiliate of the San Jose Sharks. Currently, he is the longest tenured head coach in the AHL. On November 1, 2009, Sommer became just the 4th head coach in AHL history to reach 400 wins.^[1]

Roy Akira Miki, CM, FRSC (born October 10, 1942) is a Canadian poet and scholar.

Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba to second generation Japanese-Canadian parents, he attended the University of Manitoba, the University of British Columbia, and Simon Fraser University, where he is currently a professor emeritus. He lives in Vancouver. He is very active is the Japanese-Canadian community and has fought hard for redress from the federal government for the internment of Japanese-Canadians during the Second World War.

In 2006, he was made a Member of the Order of Canada. ^[1] In 2007, he was made a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. In 2009, he was made a Member of the Order of British Columbia.

Robin Francis Blaser (May 18, 1925 – May 7, 2009) was an author and poet in both the United States and Canada.

Personal background[link]

Born in Denver, Colorado, Blaser grew up in Idaho, and came to Berkeley, California, in 1944. There he met Jack Spicer and Robert Duncan, becoming a key figure in the San Francisco Renaissance of the 1950s and early 1960s. He moved to Canada in 1966, joining the faculty of Simon Fraser University; after taking early retirement in the 1980s, he held the position of Professor Emeritus. He lived in the Kitsilano neighborhood of Vancouver, British Columbia.

In June 1995, for Blaser's 70th birthday, a conference was held in Vancouver to pay tribute to his contribution to Canadian poetry. The conference, known as the "Recovery of the Public World" (a phrase borrowed from Hannah Arendt), was attended by poets from around the world, including Canadian poets Michael Ondaatje, Steve McCaffery, Phyllis Webb, George Bowering, Fred Wah, Stan Persky and Daphne Marlatt; and poets who reside in the United States, including Michael Palmer and Norma Cole (who was born in Canada, subsequently migrating to San Francisco).

Blaser was also well known as the editor of The Collected Books of Jack Spicer, which includes Blaser's essay, The Practice of Outside. The 1993 publication The Holy Forest represents his collected poems to that date.

In 2006, Blaser received a special Lifetime Recognition Award given by the trustees of the Griffin Trust for Excellence in Poetry, which also awards the annual Griffin Poetry Prize. Blaser won the Prize itself in 2008.

Frederick James Wah (born January 23, 1939) is a Canadian poet, novelist, scholar and the current Canadian Parliamentary Poet Laureate.

Life[link]

Wah was born in Swift Current, Saskatchewan, but grew up in the interior (West Kootenay) of British Columbia. His Canadian-born father was raised in China, the son of a Chinese father and a Scots-Irish mother.^[1][2] Fred Wah's mother was a Swedish-born Canadian who came to Canada at age 6.^[3] His diverse ethnic makeup figures significantly in his writings.

Wah studied literature and music at the University of British Columbia. While there, he was a founding editor and contributor to TISH. He later did graduate work at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque and University at Buffalo, The State University of New York. He has taught at Selkirk College, David Thompson University Centre, and the University of Calgary. Well known for his work on literary journals and small-press, Wah has been a contributing editor to Open Letter since its beginning, involved in the editing of West Coast Line, and with Frank Davey edited the world's first online literary magazine, SwiftCurrent. Wah won the 'Governor General's Award' for his 1985 book "Waiting for Saskatchewan".

Wah retired after 40 years of teaching and lives in Vancouver, British Columbia with his wife Pauline Butling. He remains active writing and performing public readings of his poetry. From 2006 to 2007, he served as the Writer-in-Residence at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, British Columbia.

On December 20, 2011, Wah was appointed as Canada's Parliamentary Poet Laureate.^[4] Mr. Wah is the fifth poet to hold this office.
