Berlín is a municipality in the Usulután department of El Salvador.

Overview[link]

The municipality of Berlín is made up of an urban center (pop. approx. 12,000) and 17 cantons or villages (pop. approx. 30,000). The urban center is located at 1,020 meters above sea level in the mountains of eastern El Salvador, with the territory extending to lowland cantons (zona baja) on the Lempa River and to highland cantons (zona alta) at as much as 1,500 meters above sea level. Some of the rural cantons include: Talpetates, Loma Alta, Las Delicias, El Colon, El Tablon.

Berlin is known for coffee farming, which historically was the main economic activity for the municipality and concentrated in the zona alta. In the zona baja, including the Mechotique region, activities include cattle and sugar cane farming, as well as farming of subsistence crops such as beans and corn. Nearby municipalities include Mercedes Umaña and Santiago de Maria; the largest nearby city is San Miguel.

Berlín's patron saint is San José, and the annual patron saint festival is celebrated from March 15 - 20. The city boasts two high schools, a coffee processing plant, a bank, a credit union, a thriving municipal market, a youth community center, numerous small businesses, a Catholic church, and several Evangelical congregations.

During the Salvadoran Civil War, Berlín was the site of several battles between the FMLN and military forces. The FMLN took control of the city for five days in 1983, but were driven out by heavy bombing by the military. The engagement resulted in significant destruction of property and civilian deaths.

Berlín was heavily damaged by flooding and landslides resulting from Hurricane Mitch in 1998 and by the earthquakes of January and February, 2001. To mitigate potential future natural disasters, an Environmental Unit (Unidad Ambiental) has been established within the mayor’s office.

A severe thunderstorm with heavy rain caused flooding and landslides in May 2007 which resulted in the deaths of 5 people. Efforts are currently underway to relocate the Brisas del Sol community, where the victims were from, away from the high risk area.

Dash Berlin (born 8 November 1979) is a Dutch progressive-trance^[1] project created in 2007 in The Hague by Jeffrey Sutorius, Eelke Kalberg and Sebastiaan Molijn^[2]. The front man of the group is the DJ Jeffrey Sutorius a.k.a Dash Berlin ^[3]. Kalberg and Molijn have been contributing to the international dance scene for over ten years, with award-winning and platinum-selling hits for dance acts such as Alice Deejay, Vengaboys, Candee Jay, Pronti & Kalmani and Solid Sessions ^[4]. They also have been working together with DJ Sander Kleinenberg on classic tracks like “This Is Miami” and “The Fruit” and remixes for major artists such as Justin Timberlake ('Rock Your Body' Remix winning the award for 'Best Remix' at the Dance Star USA Awards), Janet Jackson, BT, Usher, N.E.R.D., Lenny Kravitz, Junkie XL, Röyksopp, Mylo, and Annie Lennox ^[5].

Early years[link]

Dash Berlin was formed when Jeffrey Sutorius (born in November 1979 in The Hague, The Netherlands) and his close friends, Kalberg and Molijn teamed up in 2006. ^[6]. Jeffrey Sutorius was a fan of electronic music from his high school days and in his late teens worked in a record store and became a collector of vinyl trance music. Inspired by pioneering figures such as Sven Vath, Oliver Lieb and Sander Kleinenberg, Sutorius began mixing and producing his own music. He started performing in the Dutch underground music scene in early '95 and teamed up with fellow producers and close friends Kalberg and Molijn to form Dash Berlin in 2006 ^[7].

Recognition[link]

The breakthrough for Dash Berlin came in early 2007 with “Till the Sky Falls Down”. The track shot straight to the top of the Trance charts worldwide, due in part to Armin van Buuren who included it on the third chapter of his acclaimed “Universal Religion” mix album. Van Buuren subsequently signed Dash Berlin to the Armada Music label ^[8].

Dash Berlin won the IDMA award for the track 'Waiting' in the category 'Best High Energy Track' and was nominated three times at the International Dance Music Awards, during the WMC in Miami in 2009. His tracks 'Waiting' featuring Australian singer Emma Hewitt and 'Man On The Run', a collaboration with fellow Armada artists Cerf, Mitiska & Jaren were both nominated that year in the category 'Best Trance Track'. In Armin van Buuren's popular radio show A State of Trance the 'Waiting' single was elected by the audience to the second best Trance track of the year 2009. The music video is shot in Rotterdam and gains over twelve million views on YouTube.

In 2010 Dash was nominated for the 'Best European DJ' at the IDMA's and entered the DJ Mag Top 100 poll at number 15. It won the DJ Mag Top 100 Award for 'Highest New Entry', during the Magazine's ceremony at the Ministry Of Sound in London, hosted by Boy George. On October 20, 2011 DJ Magazine announced the results of their annual Top 100 DJ Poll for the very first time in Amsterdam, with Dash Berlin placed at #8 in the world. ^[9]. In 2012 Dash receives a nomination for 'Best Trance Track' at the IDMA's for his track with Jonathan Mendelsohn entitled "Better Half Of Me".

In early 2009 plans emerge to expand the Dash Berlin influence with his own label called “Aropa.” The first release under the new label is “Man on the Run”, a collaboration with fellow Armada artists Cerf, Mitiska, & Jaren. The track rocketed to the top of the international Trance charts and received a nomination for ‘Best Trance Track’ at the annual Trance Awards ^[10].

October 2009 brings the global release of Dash Berlin’s critically acclaimed debut album, “The New Daylight”, which contains the hits, “Till the Sky Falls Down”, “Man on the Run”, “Waiting” and “Never Cry Again”. A world tour follows beginning in January 2010 in Australia. He deejays all over the world and debuts at big events like 'Trance Energy' in Utrecht, 'A State Of Trance 450' in Bratislava and Dance Valley in Spaarnwoude.

April 27th 2012 brings the global release of Dash Berlin's second artist album called "#musicislife", which contains the hits; "Disarm Yourself", "Better Half Of Me", "World Falls Apart", "Go It Alone" and "Apollo Road". A world tour follows beginning in May 2012 in Mexico.

In March 2010 Dash Berlin releases his first official DJ mix, double CD album entitled, “United Destination”. Dash remixes the track and the music video of 'Not Giving Up On Love' by the then number 1 DJ in the world Armin van Buuren, featuring the vocals of Sophie Ellis-Bextor, who is an English singer, songwriter, model and occasional DJ. Another Dash Berlin remix gets delivered for Danish singer Medina for her track 'You and I' which is an English version of the Danish song, "Kun for mig", released in late 2008 in Denmark, where it spent 52 weeks on the singles chart; six weeks at number one; making it the best selling single of 2009 in Denmark.

United Destination 2011[link]

The follow up to 'United Destination is released in 2011 called; "United Destination 2011" making it an annual concept. UD2011 includes two previously unreleased Dash Berlin tracks; the Dash Berlin 4AM Remix of 'Till The Sky Falls Down' and the single 'Earth Hour', from which Dash Berlin donated the proceeds to WNF. The official Dash Berlin Earth Hour video contains quotes from Hollywood actor Edward Norton and the 'I Am Only A Child' speech by human rights activist Severn Suzuki.

In 2011 Dash Berlin reunites with Emma Hewitt on the track 'Disarm Yourself'. The music video is shot in Australia just weeks before disaster strikes. Dash Berlin and Emma Hewitt donate the proceeds of the single to the Flood Relief Fund in Australia. He remixes the track 'A&E' by UK indie band 'Morning Parade' for Parlophone Records, the UK label behind artists such as 'The Beatles', 'Coldplay' and 'The Chemical Brothers'. Dash Berlin collaborates with German Trance DJ ATB on the instrumental track 'Apollo Road' and they perform the track together as a surprise act during an ATB concert in Poland, where the music video was shot. The single 'Better Half Of Me' features the vocals of New York City-based singer Jonathan Mendelsohn and is accompanied by Dash Berlin's most expensive music video so far. After the release of the 'Better Half Of Me Video' music video, Dash Berlin releases another bonus music video, this time with an acoustic piano version of the song. He performs at some of the worlds biggest festivals like; Electric Daisy Festival in Las Vegas, A State Of Trance 500 in Buenos Aires, Eurofest in Mexico City, Mayday in Minsk and the Sunrise Festival in Kołobrzeg.

Bruno Hoffmann (15 September 1913 – 11 April 1991) was a German player of the glass harp. Hoffmann is widely acknowledged as the virtuoso who reanimated contemporary interest in the glass harp and glass harmonica.

Bruno Hoffmann was born in Stuttgart, Germany, the son of a church music director. He was trained in piano and organ playing, but on encountering the "musical glasses" at age 16, his lifelong devotion to resurrecting this unearthly beauty was begun. He discovered and mastered the old repertoire for glass harp by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Johann Friedrich Reichardt, Karl Leopold Röllig, Johann Abraham Peter Schulz, Johann Gottlieb Naumann and others, and also inspired several modern composers to write new works for him.

He was the author of the Glasharmonika article in the German music encyclopedia Musik in Geschichte und Gegenwart. He designed and built his own instrument beginning in 1929 (aged 16), consisting of a set of wine glasses mounted in a wooden box, whose rims were rubbed to produce the tone. He appeared all over Germany and the British Isles, performing solo and with various chamber and orchestral ensembles, and during his lifetime was featured on innumerable radio and television broadcasts and several recordings (including Federico Fellini's Casanova).

Hoffmann also appeared in several films, including a Benjamin Franklin documentary. He died in Stuttgart in 1991, aged 77.

Sarah Howells is a British singer-songwriter and trance vocalist. She is also one half of the folk/indie band Paper Aeroplanes.

Biography[link]

Howells set up her first band in West Wales when she was 10 years old, with friend Nia George. They later formed a four-piece band, JYLT, with two other school friends.^[1] JYLT was disbanded in 2004 when George died aged 21, from leukaemia.^[2]

She came to trance music by chance. When Lange, a DJ and record producer, moved to Cardiff and was looking for a female vocalist for his album Better Late Than Never, he met Howells, who lived there at the time.^[3][4] They together produced the single "Out of the Sky". The song became a trance hit and was remixed by Kyau & Albert, and Aly & Fila. Armin van Buuren picked the song for his year compilation A State of Trance 2008.^[5] Armin van Buuren also selected the song in his ASOT 500 broadcast.

After the success with her debut single, Howells worked with other trance musicians in 2009 such as First State, John O'Callaghan and Dash Berlin. Most successful was the single "Find Yourself", a collaboration with John O'Callaghan. The song made it on numerous compilations and the Cosmic Gate remix was also on the year compilation A State of Trance 2009.^[6] In 2010 two of her songs each appeared on the album Changing Lanes of First State and Harmonic Motion of Lange.^[7][8]

Howells main musical project, together with co-writer and producer Richard Llewellyn, also from Wales, is the band Paper Aeroplanes. Formed in 2008, they have had national radio airplay on BBC Radio 2 and BBC 6 Music as well as touring Germany with Ron Sexsmith and several releases since.^[9] They released their debut album The Day We Ran into the Sea in 2009.^[10]

Sven Väth (born 26 October 1964, Obertshausen, Germany) is a Frankfurt-based DJ who has produced an extensive range of work since his career began in 1982. From 1985, he was part of the band OFF (acronym for Organization for Fun) which released the hit "Electrica Salsa" in 1986. He was also one of the founders of trance music labels Harthouse and the now-defunct Eye Q,^[1] as well as being among the first DJs to play trance records. In 1995 Mixmag rated his album Accident in Paradise one of the top-50 dance albums of all time^[2]; although the title track is a fast techno piece, the rest is far more sedate, such as the track "Coda," which features merely a flute and a harpsichord.

Väth is also known as "RU Ready" and "Sam Vision". He has been a member of the groups 16 Bit, Astral Pilot, Barbarella, the Essence of Nature, Metal Master, Metal Masters, Mosaic, and Off. Today he is the owner of the Cocoon Music Event GmbH, which contains his Label, Cocoon Recordings. He is also a shareholder of the Cocoon Club in Frankfurt.

Sven Väth is mentioned in the song Hyper Hyper by German hard dance band Scooter.
