Wide of news conference ending STORYLINE A massive evacuation to clear low-lying camps ahead of a cyclone has run into a potentially deadly snag: Many members of the displaced Rohingya minority living there have refused to leave because they don't trust Myanmar authorities. Around 140-thousand people - mostly Rohingya - have been living in cramped tents and makeshift shelters in Rakhine state since last year, when two outbreaks of sectarian violence between the Muslim minority and ethnic Rahkine Buddhists forced many Rohingya from their homes. Nearly half those displaced are in coastal areas considered highly vulnerable to storm surges and flooding from Cyclone Mahasen, which is expected to make landfall early on Friday. Outside the state capital of Sittwe on Wednesday, one community of several hundred Rohingya refused to budge, despite coaxing from soldiers. The displaced people at the Gaung Daga camp said they were tired of being ordered around by Myanmar authorities. First, they said, they were moved into the camps because their houses were destroyed after last year's violence. "How can we trust them? They want to force us to move when we don't want to move," said 28-year-old U Kyaung Wa. "If they use force we will have to obey them in the end," he added. The cyclone churning through the Indian Ocean appears to have weakened but could still bring "life-threatening" conditions to more than eight (m) million people in coastal parts of India, Bangladesh and Myanmar, the UN said on Wednesday. Much attention was focused on western Myanmar because of fears that heavy rains will swamp low-lying Rohingya camps. A representative from the Myanmar presidential office offered reassurances that the Rohingyas' safety would be guaranteed. "What they are worried about is their security and also they are concerned that they will not get their places back. The president already said he takes full guarantee for the security and they will be relocated to their original places," Aung Min, Minister for the President's Office told a news conference in Yangon.
