The Internet has been debating the casting of Disney star Zendaya to portray the late Aaliyah in a biopic since its announcement a couple of days ago. One set of people firmly against the film is the singer's family. According to TMZ, Barry Hankerson, Aaliyah's uncle and former manager (and R. Kelly's former manager), relayed that her family is upset that Lifetime, the network that is producing the film, never contacted them. The family now intend to bar the use of Aaliyah's music in the film, titled Aaliyah Princess of R&B;, and also plan to halt its release. She has been credited for helping redefine contemporary R&B; and hip hop, earning her the nicknames "Princess of R&B;" and "Queen of Urban Pop". She is listed by Billboard as the tenth most successful female R&B; artist of the past 25 years, and 27th most successful R&B; artist in history.

The Internet has been debating the casting of Disney star Zendaya to portray the late Aaliyah in a biopic since its announcement a couple of days ago. One set of people firmly against the film is the singer's family. According to TMZ, Barry Hankerson, Aaliyah's uncle and former manager (and R. Kelly's former manager), relayed that her family is upset that Lifetime, the network that is producing the film, never contacted them. The family now intend to bar the use of Aaliyah's music in the film, titled Aaliyah Princess of R&B;, and also plan to halt its release. Reportedly, the family isn't against a film, but thinks a TV movie isn't sufficient to do justice to big star like Aaliyah. Kelly, who became her mentor, as well as lead songwriter and producer of her debut album, Age Ain't Nothing but a Number. The album sold three million copies in the United States and was certified double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). After facing allegations of an illegal marriage with R. Kelly, Aaliyah ended her contract with Jive and signed with Atlantic Records. On August 25, 2001, Aaliyah and eight others were killed in an airplane crash in The Bahamas after filming the music video for the single "Rock the Boat". The pilot, Luis Morales III, was unlicensed at the time of the accident and had traces of cocaine and alcohol in his system. Aaliyah's family later filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Blackhawk International Airways, which was settled out of court. Aaliyah's music has continued to achieve commercial success with several posthumous releases. Aaliyah is estimated to have sold 24 to 32 million albums worldwide. She has been credited for helping redefine contemporary R&B; and hip hop, earning her the nicknames "Princess of R&B;" and "Queen of Urban Pop". The song topped the Billboard Hot 100 solely on airplay, making Aaliyah the first artist in Billboard history to achieve this feat. "Try Again" earned Aaliyah a Grammy Award nomination for Best Female R&B; Vocalist. After completing Romeo Must Die, Aaliyah filmed her part in Queen of the Damned. Raised in Foxborough, Massachusetts, she performed in various singing competitions as a child, and after competing on the television show America's Most Talented Kids in 2003, she was noticed by record producer Vincent Herbert who asked her to audition for Blackground Records. JoJo released her eponymous titled debut album in June 2004, "Leave (Get Out)", her debut single, became number one on the Billboard Pop songs chart, which made her the youngest solo artist to have a number-one single in the United States, at thirteen years old. The song peaked at 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was certified gold by the RIAA. The album has since sold over 4 million copies worldwide to date. JoJo's second album, The High Road, was released in October 2006. The album's lead single, "Too Little Too Late", was released in August 2006 and reached number three on the Billboard Hot 100. The single was certified platinum by the RIAA in March 2007 and became her first platinum-selling single. The album has since sold over three million copies worldwide. She has also released two mixtapes independently, Can't Take That Away from Me in 2010 and Agápē in December 2012, as well as an EP following her signing to Atlantic Records. As of November 2013, she has sold more than 7 million albums worldwide and has sold over 2.1 million albums and 4 million digital downloads in the United States alone. Barry Hankerson (born 1946) is an American record producer and manager who founded and runs Blackground Records. He was once a television producer and a politician in Detroit, Michigan. He managed and produced The Winans and produced Ron Milner's play Don't Get God Started in 1988. At one time Hankerson was married to Gladys Knight. He was the uncle of the late R&B singer Aaliyah. Hankerson served as Aaliyah's manager until her death on August 25, 2001 from a plane crash in the Bahamas. Hankerson also managed Toni Braxton and R. Kelly. Hankerson also co-wrote Kelly's 1992 solo debut single "She's Got That Vibe".
Hankerson is also known for his commitment to troubled youth, and has made substantial charitable contributions to private organizations that assist those youth in need of intervention. Hankerson's music labels decline to produce music containing lyrics that encourage the use of illicit drugs or irresponsible sexual behavior. Instead, artists signed by Hankerson promote positive ways for youth to succeed and become productive adults in society.

Stephen Ellis Garrett (November 11, 1974 – February 25, 2008) also known as Static Major, was a Grammy Award-Winning American rapper, singer, songwriter and record producer from Louisville, Kentucky. He was a member of the R&B trio Playa. Static Major gained posthumous fame for appearing on Lil Wayne's 2008 album Tha Carter III on the song "Lollipop". Static Major was a producer of songs from several artists, including Aaliyah, Ginuwine, and Pretty Ricky. Static Major died suddenly on the operating table before Lil Wayne's Tha Carter III album was released.
