American Sycamore Tree Identification - Platanus occidentalis
How to identify American sycamore tree, Platanus occidentalis. I've heard it's possible to tap the Sycamore and evaporate the sap to make maple syrup, but, I've never done it myself. American sycamore is, in fact, not a maple at all, the seeds and leaf arrangement are a dead giveaway.
American sycamore seeds are round, spiky, warty globes about the size of a golf ball, and look more like miniature Osage oranges than maple seeds, which are smaller and look like wings. American sycamore seeds may be a good late winter tinder for starting fires, there are many tiny fibers that make up the seed pod which may take a spark from a fire steel or could possibly be used to make a tinder nest.
American sycamore leaves appear quite similar to maple leaves, but, it's not a maple and is in it's own family, the plane-tree family or Platanaceae. Maples have opposite branching, sycamore has alternate branching. some folks refer to american sycamore as Big leaved maple.
American sycamore range distribution is across the eastern half of the United States, it seems to prefer lowland habitats near rivers, flood plains, and around lakes and ponds.
American sycamore bark is very distinct, having the pattern of woodland camouflage. The color of the bark ranges from white, to green, beige, brown and grey. The younger bark is smooth and patchy, the older bark is rough and flaky.
The above features make American sycamore stand out like a sore thumb, it's a real pretty tree and hard to mistake for any other.
It seems strange to me how common names are used, even stranger is how some plants are classified by botanists. If a tree has a maple leaf and can be tapped for maple syrup you'd think it would be classified as a maple, and if a tree is commonly referred to as a maple I'd think it would be a maple, but it's not. American sycamore is in a family all it's own.
Here's Craig's channel if you'd like to check it out: http://www.youtube.com/user/leaflifebushcraft The sycamore he has over in the UK is a completely different tree and that's what led to the making of this video. I thought it was pretty neat to see his variety of sycamore. The sycamore over there is actually a maple tree.

Possible Trail Marker Tree - American Sycamore
Situated on top of a ridge in California Woods Nature Preserve, this Sycamore stands apart from the other Sycamores down below. I don't know if it was bent by man or by nature, but it makes a striking appearance in the forest.
With the confluence of the Little Miami River and the Ohio River a half mile to the west, the tree points almost due south to a bend in the Ohio River two miles away. The preserve is also in the vicinity of the historical Miami Indian Village of le Baril.
"Following the disappearance of the Fort Ancient people, the next village in the
watershed was probably established by the Miami Indians at the end of the seventeenth century or the beginning of the eighteenth century. The Miami were then moving south from the Great Lakes region into Indiana and western Ohio, perhaps to improve their hunting for pelts and/or to find better growing conditions for their crops. Although it is uncertain when the Miami first settled in the Little Miami Valley, it is known that a Miami village was located in the watershed by 1733. French traders called the settlement le Baril (The Barrel) after the shape of the chief who resided there. A 1749 French military expedition led by Monsieur de Celeron found le Baril to consist of seven or eight cabins. The village was a few miles inland from the mouth of Riviere la Blanche (Clear River), the French name for the watercourse that British traders called the Little Miami." One Sticking American Sycamore
When I got home from work the weather was too nice to pass up. I grabbed the Ontario RAT5 of Ohski's that I've been trying out and headed for the woodlot for some skills practice.
American Sycamore is one of the hardest woods for me to do a split wood fire with since it doesn't split worth a darn. I cannot get pencil lead pieces at all. It is all over the areas I frequent though so I feel it is important to practice with.
This isn't pretty but I did get a sustainable fire. I'll keep practicing and improve my efficiency.

The Eye Of The Storm -North American Trailer- Sycamore Entertainment Inc
Patrick White put Australia on the literary map by winning the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1973, but his rich dense style did not make for a best-selling author. This film, an adaptation of White's novel, marks the first time anyone has succeeded in filming a White novel. Director Fred Schepisi said at the preview I attended that it was a challenge to film the allegedly unfilmable; if it had been easy it would have not been worth doing.
Synopsis:
Old Mrs Elizabeth Hunter, widow of a wealthy grazier, is nearing the end of her days in some splendour in her Centennial Park, Sydney, mansion, and her two children have been summoned to her bedside. Her son Basil, once a leading actor on the London stage whose career is now in decline and her daughter Dorothy, the ex-wife of a minor French aristocrat, are motivated more by their possible inheritance than affection for the old lady. In fact Elizabeth inspires more affection in her nurses, solicitor and housekeeper than she does in her children. Dorothy in particular has cause to hate her mother, yet it is she who gets closer to her as the film progresses.
Schepisi manages to blend in the dark humour of the situation with the downbeat storyline. The cinemaphotograhy is gorgeous and the cutting, often without the usual establishment shots, wonderfully done, given the extensive use made of flashbacks – you instantly realise where the characters are.

Sycamore Shoals State Historic Area
Early settlers in what is now Northeast Tennessee defied a royal ordinance stating colonists could not move west of the Appalachian Mountains. Yet despite their unlawful actions, these “Overmountain Men” ultimately saved the American Revolution. In 1780, 1,100 of these brave pioneers gathered at Sycamore Shoals before embarking on a two-week march to King’s Mountain, SC. Once there, they swiftly defeated the larger British army, ensuring victory for the “Americans.” Today, visitors to Sycamore Shoals State Historic Area can get a hands-on look at the original frontier and learn the history behind the first permanent settlement outside the 13 colonies. The park is home to countless 18th century artifacts, as well as an outdoor drama, “Liberty: The Saga of Sycamore Shoals,” depicting the story of these historic people.

Sycamore: The 9/11 Tragedy FULL VERSION
September 11, 2001 the nation was shook by the most horrible attack on American soil in this nations history. Shortly after the leaders of this nation quoted from an obscure passage of scripture, Isaiah 9, offering hope to a devastated nation. unknown to them this scripture was also given to the nation of Israel, through its prophets, as a warning of God's judgment to come if they did not repent. What was meant for hope, was a prophecy of a nations destruction. Follow Brother Elliott and Raymond as they travel to New York City, to the gates of the nation to deliver God's warning to America and offer hope in her only salvation...the Lord Jesus Christ.
