Ching chong is a pejorative term sometimes employed by speakers of the English language to mock people of Chinese ancestry, or other Asians who may be mistaken for Chinese.

Several public commentators have characterized the term as derogatory while noting that assaults or physical intimidation of Asians are often accompanied by racial slurs or imitation Chinese.^[1][2]

Historical usage[link]

The prevalent usage of this phrase began as an insult during the gold-rush eras of the 19th century in Ballarat, Australia, when the Chinese gold prospectors were of Ch'ing (which is in Wade-Giles romanization, Chinese character: 清, also spelled "Qing" in Pinyin romanization) Dynasty origin.^{[3][not in citation given (See discussion.)]}

While usually intended for ethnic Chinese, the slur has also been directed at other East Asians. Mary Paik Lee, a Korean immigrant who arrived with her family in San Francisco in 1906, writes in her autobiography that on her first day of school, girls circled and hit her, chanting:

Ching Chong, Chinaman,
Sitting on a wall.
Along came a white man,
And chopped his tail off.^[4]

A variation of this rhyme is repeated by a young boy in John Steinbeck's novel Cannery Row in mockery of a Chinese man. In this version, "wall" is replaced with "rail", and the phrase "chopped his tail off" is changed to "chopped off his tail".

In 1917, a ragtime piano song entitled "Ching Chong" was co-written by Lee S. Roberts and J. Will Callahan.^[5] Its lyrics contained the following words:

"Ching, Chong, Oh Mister Ching Chong,
You are the king of Chinatown.
Ching Chong, I love your sing-song,
When you have turned the lights all down."

Modern usage[link]

In December 2002, NBA star Shaquille O'Neal received media flak for saying "Tell [NBA center] Yao Ming, 'Ching chong yang, wah, ah soh" during an interview on Fox Sports Net.^[7] O'Neal later said it was locker-room humor and he meant no offense. Yao believed that O'Neal was joking, but he said a lot of Asians would not see the humor.^[8] Yao joked, "Chinese is hard to learn. I had trouble with it when I was little."^[9] O'Neal added, "I mean, if I was the first one to do it, and the only one to do it, I could see what they're talking about. But if I offended anybody, I apologize."^[9]

On January 24, 2006, comedian Dave Dameshek created an audio parody of the Asian Excellence Awards for The Adam Carolla Show. The premise of the parody was using the words "ching" and "chong" to mimic the awards show.^[10] Branding the segment as demeaning and racist, several Asian American organizations threatened to ask advertisers to withdraw their support from the show if the station did not issue an apology.^[11][12] On February 22, 2006, Carolla read a brief apology for the segment.^[13] On April 26, 2006, Carolla had the head of the Media Action Network for Asian Americans, Guy Aoki on his show. Aoki opined that "ching chong" is the equivalent to the "N-word".^[14][15]

In November 2006, Bryn Mawr College canceled a performance by the independent band Ching Chong Song, both of whose members are white, after protests from various campus groups, including the Asian Students Association.^[16] After further protests at New York University the band agreed to change its name to Church of Lurch. They have since decided to retain the name Ching Chong Song and the band performs regularly without incident.^[17][18]

On December 5, 2006, comedian on The View, co-host Rosie O'Donnell used a series of ching chongs to imitate newscasters in China.^[2] O'Donnell made a comment in reference to people in China talking about Danny DeVito's drunken appearance on the show, "You know, you can imagine in China it's like, 'Ching-chong, ching-chong. Danny DeVito. Ching-chong, ching-chong-chong. Drunk. The View. Ching-chong.'"^[19] The Asian American Journalists Association said her comments were "a mockery of the Chinese language and, in effect, a perpetuation of stereotypes of Asian Americans as foreigners or second-class citizens ... and gives the impression that they are a group that is substandard to English-speaking people"^[20] Cindi Berger, O'Donnell's representative, said: "She's a comedian in addition to being a talk show co-host. I certainly hope that one day they will be able to grasp her humor." On December 14 on The View, O'Donnell said she was unaware that ching chong was an offensive way to make fun of Asian accents, and she was informed it was on par with the "N-word". She apologized to "those people who felt hurt".^[21][22] Jeff Yang, who tracks Asian and Asian-American trends for a market research firm, said O'Donnell shouldn't have apologized for people's hurt feelings. "She should have apologized for spreading and encouraging ignorance."^[2] O'Donnell warned that "there's a good chance I'll do something like that again, probably in the next week, not on purpose. Only 'cause it's how my brain works."^[23] Time called it a "pseudo-apology".^[24] O'Donnell later wrote in her autobiography Celebrity Detox: The Fame Game that "I wish I had been a bit more pure in my public apology."^[25]

In 2010, the Pan Asian Repertory Theatre was forced to release a statement explaining their decision to produce a play by Lauren Yee titled Ching Chong Chinaman. Artistic Producing Director Tisa Chang explained the controversy as follows:

It has come to my attention that some in the community do not understand why Pan Asian is producing a play with the controversial title CHING CHONG CHINAMAN and how much emotional upset and consternation it is creating. This is my open letter to try to clarify this miscommunication.

CHING CHONG CHINAMAN takes its controversial title from the late 19th century pejorative jingle and uses irony and satire to reverse prejudicial attitudes towards Asians and other outsiders. This is a funny and surprising new perspective from a young writer tackling assumptions of stereotype which are not relegated to any one race and can be evidenced within our own.^[26]

On January 19, 2011, conservative political commentator Rush Limbaugh mocked Chinese president Hu Jintao during his visit to the White House on his radio show. "Hu Jintao -- He was speaking and they weren’t translating. They normally translate every couple of words. Hu Jintao was just going ching chong, ching chong cha," said Limbaugh, who imitated Hu's speech for seventeen seconds. Representative Judy Chu of California said that Limbaugh's words were the same ones that Chinese Americans have heard in the past 150 years as they faced racial discrimination while "they were called racial slurs, were spat upon in the streets, derided in the halls of Congress and even brutally murdered."^[27] New York Assemblywoman Grace Meng said it was Limbaugh's prerogative to attack Hu, "but at the same time he offended 13% of New York City's population."^[28] California State Senator Leland Yee also criticized Limbaugh for his remarks: "His classless act is an insult to over 3,000 years of cultural history, and is a slap in the face to the millions of Chinese Americans who have struggled in this country and to a people who constitute one-quarter of the world's population."^[27] Yee demanded an apology from Limbaugh for what he and others view as racist and derogatory remarks. He also organized with civil rights groups—including Chinese for Affirmative Action, Japanese American Citizens League and the California National Organization for Women—to boycott companies like ProFlowers, Sleep Train and Domino's Pizza that advertise on Limbaugh's talk show.^[28][29] Yee has received threatening messages and also received a fax from an unknown sender which made racist comments and called him a Marxist. "Rush Limbaugh will kick your Chink ass and expose you for the fool you are," part of the memo said.^[30]

Rucka Rucka Ali is an American rapper, radio personality, singer, comedian, and satirist most noted for his song parodies on YouTube. He has been labelled one of the most successful artists to come out of YouTube, where he has received over 100 million hits^[1] with hits such as "Ching Chang Chong" and "Justin's Beaver". He released several albums, two of which charted in the Billboard Top Comedy Albums. In 2009, he launched his own label, Pinegrove Records.^[2]

Jimmy Wong is an American actor, musician, and filmmaker. He maintains the popular YouTube channel "jimmy", but also features in a new channel, Feast of Fiction. He is the younger brother of popular YouTuber Freddie Wong.^[1][2]

Biography[link]

Wong grew up in Seattle, WA and then attended and graduated from Middlebury College in 2009.^[3] He now co-owns and runs Overcrank Media, a Los Angeles based media production company specializing in feature film and online video content, having produced an independent film titled Bear.

Acting career[link]

Jimmy majored in Theatre and Drama at Middlebury College. After graduating, he moved to Los Angeles in 2010. His most notable roles to date have been as Ted Wong in the upcoming webseries VGHS directed by brother Freddie Wong and Fred Chu in the upcoming film John Dies at the End directed by Don Coscarelli. He has also been a host on Disney's Backstage Pass and starred in the XFX webseries Secret Weapon.

Musical career[link]

Wong's began focusing on singing while at Middlebury College. His sophomore year he joined the Middlebury College Mamajamas, a co-ed a cappella group. He took a break from the group his junior year after helping produce and organize the recording of the "Madras Album". He also performed on campus with his band The Gremlin's Kremlin. Wong is best known for his musical retort to Alexandra Wallace's infamous vlog rant against Asian students in the library at UCLA which has garnered over 4 million views.^[4] He posts new music on his YouTube channel weekly.

He formed the band The Keep^[5] along with Sam Gorski (lead guitar), Jake Watson (bass guitar), and Niko Pueringer (drums) in early 2011. They released their debut self-titled EP on July 22, 2011 along with the music video for the single Slow in Reverse on band member's Sam Gorski and Niko Pueringer's YouTube channel.

Freddie Wong is an American filmmaker, musician, VFX technician and e-Sports player. He maintains two popular YouTube channels, "freddiew" and "freddiew2". He is the older brother of fellow YouTuber Jimmy Wong.^[3][4]

Wong graduated from Lakeside School.^[5] He then attended and graduated from the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts.^[5] Wong owns and manages Overcrank Media, a Los Angeles based media production company specializing in feature film and online video content, having produced an independent film titled Bear. Wong met his future collaborator Brandon Laatsch in college. They have collaborated with various Hollywood artists, and with video game development companies.

Wong competed in the World Series of Video Games in Dallas in July 2007. He won first prize in the Guitar Hero 2 competition, playing the song "Less Talk More Rokk" by Freezepop.^[6][7]

During MTV's "Gamer's Week" celebration in November 2007, Freddie appeared as a guest on Total Request Live.^[8] Participating in the program with his newly-formed band Hellanor Brozevelt, Wong was part of a country-wide search to find the best Rock Band ensemble. After receiving tutelage from well-known rockers Good Charlotte, Brozevelt performed at the Hard Rock Cafe in New York against Chicago-based Carrie Me Home.^{[citation needed]}

For the release of Rock Band, the band Hellanor Brozevelt was commissioned to play at the Best Buy in Hollywood, CA for the midnight release of the game.^[9]

Freddie Wong performed at the first (and only) YouTube Live in San Francisco on November 22, 2008.

He maintains two YouTube channels,^[10][11] with the main channel having a total of 611 million video views and over 3.1 million subscribers,^[12] and the second with 112 million video views and 0.9 million subscribers.^[13] Wong has successfully attracted mainstream attention as well, with Andy Whitfield appearing in a Time Crisis tribute video, Kevin Pollak appearing in a Hypnotism stunt, Shenae Grimes in a romantic gun action scene, Ray William Johnson in a troll infestation video, Eliza Dushku appearing in an action scene, Jon Favreau featuring in his video based on Cowboys & Aliens, and the glam metal band Steel Panther appearing in his video based on the Crossfire board game.

In 2010 he helped Joe Penna, known as MysteryGuitarMan on YouTube, shoot a commercial for McDonald's.^[14] In 2011 Wong produced, co-directed, and acted in a TV commercial for Battlefield 3 at the request of Electronic Arts.^[15][16]

Since 2011 he, along with his partners, has worked on the webseries Video Game High School, which began releasing episodes on May 10, 2012.
