This is a replica of a 19th Century painting which is housed at the Saco Museum. A replica was made because the original is too fragile to crank. This is a group that believes that our 2 party system is very flawed, it does not reflect what the average American believes and that third parties are treated as a joke because the system is rigged against them. Instant runoff, ranked ballot voting(see description below) or approval voting is a form of voting currently used in Ireland, Australia and now Maine that allows you to rank the candidates by preference and if your top candidate does not get enough votes, your vote goes to your second or third choice depending on who ultimately ends up getting the most votes. This ensures that you less often feel like you are throwing away your vote to vote 3rd party and they actually have a chance of winning. What’s even better is the Constitution allows states to make election laws so we can actually change this on a grassroots level. City laws can even be changed to get people used to and more aware of the concept, as Maine, Minneapolis, MN and Oakland City CA now uses the process. Lets gather together all people left, right or center who believe that there should be more choices other than the 2 we are given if we want to have a strong America that represents the people.

Maine (
i/ˈmeɪn/; French: État du Maine) is a state in New England, in the United States. Maine is the 39th most extensive and the 42nd most populous of the 50 U.S. states. For thousands of years, indigenous peoples were the only inhabitants of the territory that is now Maine. At the time of European encounter, several Algonquian-speaking peoples inhabited the area. The first European settlement in Maine was by the French in 1604 on Saint Croix Island, by Pierre Dugua, Sieur de Mons. The first English settlement in Maine, the short-lived Popham Colony, was established by the Plymouth Company in 1607. A number of English settlements were established along the coast of Maine in the 1620s, although the rugged climate, deprivations, and conflict with the local peoples caused many to fail over the years.

The Pilgrim's Progress
The Pilgrim's Progress from This World to That Which Is to Come; Delivered under the Similitude of a Dream is a 1678 Christian allegory written by John Bunyan. It is regarded as one of the most significant works of religious English literature, has been translated into more than 200 languages, and has never been out of print. Bunyan began his work while in the Bedfordshire county prison for violations of the Conventicle Act, which prohibited the holding of religious services outside the auspices of the established Church of England. Early Bunyan scholars like John Brown believed The Pilgrim's Progress was begun in Bunyan's second, shorter imprisonment for six months in 1675, but more recent scholars like Roger Sharrock believe that it was begun during Bunyan's initial, more lengthy imprisonment from 1660 to 1672 right after he had written his spiritual autobiography, Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners.
The English text comprises 108,260 words and is divided into two parts, each reading as a continuous narrative with no chapter divisions. The first part was completed in 1677 and entered into the Stationers' Register on 22 December 1677. It was licensed and entered in the "Term Catalogue" on 18 February 1678, which is looked upon as the date of first publication. After the first edition of the first part in 1678, an expanded edition, with additions written after Bunyan was freed, appeared in 1679. The Second Part appeared in 1684. There were eleven editions of the first part in John Bunyan's lifetime, published in successive years from 1678 to 1685 and in 1688, and there were two editions of the second part, published in 1684 and 1686.

Moving panorama
The moving panorama was a relative, more in concept than design, to panoramic painting, but proved to be more durable than its fixed and immense cousin. In the mid-nineteenth century, the moving panorama was among the most popular forms of entertainment in the world, with hundreds of panoramas constantly on tour in the United Kingdom, the United States, and many European countries. Moving panoramas were often seen in melodramatic plays. It became a new visual element to theatre and helped incorporate a more realistic quality. Not only was it a special effect on stage, but it also served as an ancestor and platform to early cinema.
The word “panorama” is derived from the Greek words “to see” and “all.” Robert Barker invented the first panorama to describe his impressive paintings of Edinburgh in 1791. However, these paintings were not true panoramas, but rather contiguous views of passing scenery, as if seen from a boat or a train window. Installed on immense spools, they were scrolled past the audience behind a cut-out drop-scene or proscenium which hid the mechanism from public view. Unlike panoramic painting, the moving panorama almost always had a narrator, styled as its "Delineator" or "Professor", who described the scenes as they passed and added to the drama of the events depicted. One of the most successful of these delineators was John Banvard, whose panorama of a trip up (and down) the Mississippi River had such a successful world tour that the profits enabled him to build an immense mansion, lampooned as "Banvard's Folly", built on Long Island in imitation of Windsor Castle. In Britain, showmen such as the durable Moses Gompertz toured the provinces with a variety of such panoramas from the 1850s until well into the 1880s.

This is a replica of a 19th Century painting which is housed at the Saco Museum. A replica was made because the original is too fragile to crank. This is a group that believes that our 2 party system is very flawed, it does not reflect what the average American believes and that third parties are treated as a joke because the system is rigged against them. Instant runoff, ranked ballot voting(see description below) or approval voting is a form of voting currently used in Ireland, Australia and now Maine that allows you to rank the candidates by preference and if your top candidate does not get enough votes, your vote goes to your second or third choice depending on who ultimately ends up getting the most votes. This ensures that you less often feel like you are throwing away your vote to vote 3rd party and they actually have a chance of winning. What’s even better is the Constitution allows states to make election laws so we can actually change this on a grassroots level. City laws can even be changed to get people used to and more aware of the concept, as Maine, Minneapolis, MN and Oakland City CA now uses the process. Lets gather together all people left, right or center who believe that there should be more choices other than the 2 we are given if we want to have a strong America that represents the people. Rules of this group: Rule 1. Other than election laws we do not talk about politics Rule 2:We do NOT talk about politics There are conservatives, liberals, libertarians, greens, constitutionalists, social democrats and more views in this group. Convincing the other that your way of thinking is better is not for this group Rule 3: Do not reveal to people what your political stance is. Treat this like a professional work environment, its not your or their business who people vote for, just that we all agree the system is flawed Rule 4: Do not make snide remarks about current parties or office holders. They are a product of the system. We need to focus only on how we can fix it Rule 5: Do not discuss conspiracy theory. If the conspiracy is true, then nothing we do will matter anyway so why are you in this group trying to change things. Rule 6: We all have strengths and knowledge to bring to the table that others don’t have. That is what America is. Bring your skills and knowledge and we will try to put them to work Rule 7: Be Polite, Be professional, and be positive. This is a replica of a 19th Century painting which is housed at the Saco Museum. A replica was made because the original is too fragile to crank. Special thanks to Peter Morelli (a major force in making the whole project happen) for giving me permission to post some videos.

This is a group that believes that our 2 party system is very flawed, it does not reflect what the average American believes and that third parties are treated as a joke because the system is rigged against them. Instant runoff, ranked ballot voting(see description below) or approval voting is a form of voting currently used in Ireland, Australia and now Maine that allows you to rank the candidates by preference and if your top candidate does not get enough votes, your vote goes to your second or third choice depending on who ultimately ends up getting the most votes. This ensures that you less often feel like you are throwing away your vote to vote 3rd party and they actually have a chance of winning. What’s even better is the Constitution allows states to make election laws so we can actually change this on a grassroots level. City laws can even be changed to get people used to and more aware of the concept, as Maine, Minneapolis, MN and Oakland City CA now uses the process. Lets gather together all people left, right or center who believe that there should be more choices other than the 2 we are given if we want to have a strong America that represents the people.

Rule 2:We do NOT talk about politics There are conservatives, liberals, libertarians, greens, constitutionalists, social democrats and more views in this group. Convincing the other that your way of thinking is better is not for this group
Rule 3: Do not reveal to people what your political stance is. Treat this like a professional work environment, its not your or their business who people vote for, just that we all agree the system is flawed
Rule 4: Do not make snide remarks about current parties or office holders. They are a product of the system. We need to focus only on how we can fix it
Rule 5: Do not discuss conspiracy theory. If the conspiracy is true, then nothing we do will matter anyway so why are you in this group trying to change things.
Rule 6: We all have strengths and knowledge to bring to the table that others don’t have. That is what America is. Bring your skills and knowledge and we will try to put them to work
Rule 7: Be Polite, Be professional, and be positive.
Rule 8: Volunteer what you can
Rule 9: If you can’t control talking about your political views beyond what is needed to change the laws in terms of voting you will be asked to leave

Ranked Choice of NYOUR AREA.
This is a group that believes that our 2 party system is very flawed, it does not reflect what the average American believes and that third parties are treated as a joke because the system is rigged against them. Instant runoff, ranked ballot voting(see description below) or approval voting is a form of voting currently used in Ireland, Australia and now Maine that allows you to rank the candidates by preference and if your top candidate does not get enough votes, your vote goes to your second or third choice depending on who ultimately ends up getting the most votes. This ensures that you less often feel like you are throwing away your vote to vote 3rd party and they actually have a chance of winning. What’s even better is the Constitution allows states to make election laws so we can actually change this on a grassroots level. City laws can even be changed to get people used to and more aware of the concept, as Maine, Minneapolis, MN and Oakland City CA now uses the process. Lets gather together all people left, right or center who believe that there should be more choices other than the 2 we are given if we want to have a strong America that represents the people.
Rules of this group:

Rule 2:We do NOT talk about politics There are conservatives, liberals, libertarians, greens, constitutionalists, social democrats and more views in this group. Convincing the other that your way of thinking is better is not for this group

Rule 4: Do not make snide remarks about current parties or office holders. They are a product of the system. We need to focus only on how we can fix it
Rule 5: Do not discuss conspiracy theory. If the conspiracy is true, then nothing we do will matter anyway so why are you in this group trying to change things.
Rule 6: We all have strengths and knowledge to bring to the table that others don’t have. That is what America is. Bring your skills and knowledge and we will try to put them to work
Rule 7: Be Polite, Be professional, and be positive.
Rule 8: Volunteer what you can

Mark Lindquist The Heart of a Lathe
Mark Lindquist changes out the motor on his long pattern maker's lathe that he's used for over 35 years. He retrofits his lathe with a Baldor 3HP DC motor and builds custom controllers for the lathe motor and carriage motor. In part II of the video, Lindquist tests the lathe and new motor and controller combination turning a good-sized block of flame box elder sent as a gift from a friend, Kevin Jaynes. Mark works with the sounds of the lathe in real time and slow motion combining and over dubbing to create a percussion piece dealing with "lathe music." Lindquist refers to his drum teacher Don Bush who had a significant influence on him during junior high and high school years while Lindquist studied percussion privately with him in the 60's. Mark Lindquist changes out the motor on his long pattern maker's lathe that he's used for over 35 years. He retrofits his lathe with a Baldor 3HP DC motor and builds custom controllers for the lathe motor and carriage motor.
In part II of the video, Lindquist tests the lathe and new motor and controller combination turning a good-sized block of flame box elder sent as a gift from a friend, Kevin Jaynes. Mark works with the sounds of the lathe in real time and slow motion combining and over dubbing to create a percussion piece dealing with "lathe music."
Lindquist refers to his drum teacher Don Bush who had a significant influence on him during junior high and high school years while Lindquist studied percussion privately with him in the 60's. A little about Don Bush:
Don Bush graduated with honors from the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, Mass., and was a student of Leonard Bernstein at the Berkshire Music Center in Tanglewood, MA. As a concert percussionist, Mr. Bush was a member of the Portland, Maine, Springfield, Mass., and Albany symphonies. He was also a member of the Boston Pops Orchestra, where he toured with Arthur Fiedler, and the Pittsburgh Symphony under William Steinberg. He worked under conductors such as Aaron Copland, Andre Kostelanetz, Igor Stravinsky, Charles Munch, Lorin Maazel and Leonard Bernstein. Bush taught percussion at Niskayuna High School for 10 years and at his private drum studio for 25 years.
About the lathe:
Mark bought the pattern maker's lathe from Crown Equipment in Manchester, NH and it wasn't until the late 70's that Mark and his father Melvin Lindquist reworked the lathe and got it running. Shortly after, Mark worked with his machinist friend Francis Mitchell to jack the headstock and tailstock up to increase the swing of the lathe. A friend of Melvin's who was VP at US Motors had the motor reworked in the late 70's and it was used by Mark and Melvin alternately, over a 30 year period in New Hampshire and in Florida. The lathe has been in the Lindquist Studios Florida Studio since 1986.
The belt in the sheave drive began slipping at lower RPM's and Mark decided to replace it with a permanent Magnet DC motor and controller. Since Lindquist new a lot about DC motors and controllers, it was a logical choice over a Variable Frequency Drive, since the DC Motor with the right controller and Tachometer/Generator feedback are extremely reliable, strong and steady at low RPM's, where it is particularly needed for larger logs.
Mark uses a new hook tool made for him years ago based on an original hook tool that came with an 8' Diameter Pattern-maker's lathe. The original was made by an unknown blacksmith and the new tool (made 7 years ago by machinist Jeffrey Woodcock) was milled out of a solid block with CNC and heat treated and tempered.
This video is the first in a series of videos that deal with the subject of lathe turning, percussion music, and machine sounds. It has long been an interest of Mark's to work along these lines.
