Robert Stanford Tuck
In his words: At the age of 19 I accepted a short - servicecommission in the Royal Air Force in September, 1935, after having had two years at sea as a cadet. I was bored and wanted to fly. After training at No. 3 FTS at Grantham, flying the Avro Tutor, Hawker Hart, Hawker Fury and the Bristol Bulldog, I was glad to pass out with the highest rating available "exceptional" in my log-book. In July 1936, I was posted to my first Fighter Squadron, No. 65(F) at Hornchurch where I flew Hawker Demons, wich were replaced by Gloster Gauntletts, then Gladiators, and finally Spitfires, which we received in late 1938, being one of the first Squadrons to be equipped with this revolutionary aircraft. Consequently, by the outbreak of war I had flown several hundred hours on Spitfires and was thoroughly familiar and confident in it. A tremendous advantage later when going into combat. On the 16th May 1940, I was instructed on a top secret order to fly to Hendon with two other Spitfires. We were to act as fighter escort to an un-armed twin-engined Flamingo, carrying Winston Churchill and a small staff to Le Bourget, for his final attempt to prevail on the French to hold out a little longer. Churchill realised the evacuation of the BEF from Dunkirk was imminent. After the retum flight to Hendon the next day, Winston thanked us for our escort, but from his expression he left us in no doubt that he had been unsuccessful. My first aerial combat took place over Dunkirk on 23 May 1940, as a ...

Squadron Leader Tony Iveson DFC on RAF Bomber Command
Squadron LeaderTony Iveson DFC fought in the Battle of Britain with RAF Fighter Command as a Sergeant pilot, joining 616 Squadron at Kenley, flying Spitfires, on 2nd September 1940. On the 16th September, he was forced to ditch into the sea after running out of fuel following a pursuit of a Ju88 bomber. His Spitfire L1036 ditched 20 miles off Cromer in Norfolk and he was picked up by an MTB. He joined No.92 Sqn the following month. Commissioned in 1942, Tony undertook his second tour transferring to RAF Bomber Command, where he was selected to join the famous 617 Squadron, 'The Dambusters', flying Lancasters. He took part in most of 617 Squadron's high precision operations, including all three sorties against the German battleship Tirpitz and went on to become one of the most respected pilots in the squadron.

Get the word out on this video. - Monday May 16 2011 10:10 am en.wikipedia.org The Red Arrows, officially known as the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team, is the aerobatics display team of the Royal Air Force based at RAF Scampton, but due to move to RAF Waddington in 2011. The team was formed in late 1964 as an all-RAF team, replacing a number of unofficial teams that had been sponsored by RAF commands. The Red Arrows badge shows the aircraft in their trademark diamond nine formation, with the motto Éclat, a French word meaning 'brilliance' or 'excellence'. They are widely regarded as one of the best aerial acrobatics teams in the world. Initially, they were equipped with seven Folland Gnat trainers inherited from the RAF Yellowjacks display team. This aircraft was chosen because it was less expensive to operate than front-line fighters. In their first season, they flew at 65 shows across Europe. In 1966, the team was increased to nine members, enabling them to develop their Diamond Nine formation. In late 1979, they switched to the BAE Hawk trainer. The Red Arrows have performed over 4000 displays worldwide in 53 countries. The Red Arrows were not the first RAF aerobatics team. An RAF biplane pageant was held at Hendon in 1920 with biplane teams from front-line squadrons. In 1938, three Gloster Gladiators flew with their wing-tips tied together. The Second ...

Handley Page HP42
This is some better quality film than I originally posted The Handley Page HP42 and HP45 were British four-engined long-range biplane airliners designed to a 1928 Imperial Airways specification by Handley Page of Radlett in Hertfordshire. The HP42/45 were the land-based airliners of Imperial Airways and along with the company's later flying boats are well remembered. Eight aircraft were built, four of each type; all were named, with names beginning with the letter "H". One was destroyed in an airship hangar fire in 1937 but the remainder survived to be impressed into Royal Air Force service at the outbreak of the Second World War. No lives were lost in civilian service (a record thought to be unique for contemporary aircraft) but by 1940 all had been destroyed. The HP42 was designed for the long-range, Eastern routes and the similar HP45 was built for the European routes. In Imperial Airways service, the HP42 was designated the HP42E (E for "Eastern" routes - India and South Africa), while the HP45 was called the HP42W (W for "Western" ie European routes). The HP42 and HP45 designations were Handley Page's identifiers but this was not commonly known at the time. The HP42 was a large unequal-span biplane of all-metal construction except for the fabric coverings of the wings, tail surfaces and rear fuselage. The wings were braced by Warren girders. The tailplane was of biplane configuration with three fins. The HP42 was powered by four Bristol Jupiter XIFs of 490 hp (365 kW ...

70th Battle of Britain Anniversary Air Show featuring Bf 109 E-4 & Hawker Hurricane XII 2010
**** This is world's only Messerschmitt Bf 109 Emil variant flying with original DB 601 engine. All comments of political nature will be removed. Feel free to turn UP the volume on the final pass and listen to the raw power of the DB engine. Hawker Hurricane XII Country: Britain Year: 1942 Engine: Rolls Royce Merlin 224, 1300 Horsepower V12 Liquid-Cooled engine Max Speed: 340 mph. Range: 470 mi. Service Ceiling: 36000 ft. Max Weight: 8250 lbs. Armament: .303 Wing Mounted Machine Guns The Hawker Hurricane was the first Monoplane with 8 machine guns to exceed 300 mph to go into production for the RAF. Sydney Camm's fighter will always be associated with the Battle of Britain in which it shared the main action against the Luftwaffe with the Spitfire. During the Battle of Britain the Hurricane destroyed more enemy aircraft than all other air defense forces combined. The production figures are in themselves proof of its great qualities. There were over 14000 Hurricanes in various models produced from 1936 to 1944. Manufactured by Canadian Car & Foundry, Montreal, Quebec, Canada as a Mk. IIB and converted to Mk. XII configuration early on during WW II. One of several Hurricanes recovered from a scrap heap by Jack Arnold of Brantford, Ontario in 1984, P2970 eventually ended up in England. After being rebuilt by warbird restorer Charles Church, it made its first post-restoration flight in September 1991. Although it is a relatively late-model Hurricane, P2970 was painted as ...
