BELARUSIAN DREAM (documentary; English subtitles)
Belarusian Dream, an award-winning film, is the story of a young person from Minsk who has lived most of his life in a country ruled by a dictator. Against the background of falsified elections, brutal repressions, and a severe economic crisis, it shows how more people in the most 'stable' post-Soviet country are starting to demand change. This is a story about how the regime can crush a person, and how you can find your own freedom in a state that possesses total contol.
Belarusian Dream is the first independent documentary film to look at what has happened in Belarus since the 2010 presidential elections. Directed by Ekaterina Kibalchich, born in 1982 in Minsk; laureate of the 'Zolotoe Pero' award from the Russian Journalism Union.

A lesson of Belarusian # 1 of 6 - English subtitles
A Lesson of Belarusian is documentary from the former Soviet republic of Belarus. The country is often labelled the last dictatorship in Europe, ruled by president Aleksander Lukashenko's arbitrary and ruthless iron fist. In many ways, the country has reversed time and now follows the logic from its Soviet legacy and replaced the mentality, economics, structures of society, language, national flag and symbols with that of its Soviet past. Hence it is the state, which has the monopoly on ultimate power, which is being used to steer and control all aspects of the citizens' life. Since A. Lukahsenko was elected president in 1994, he has used the state to wage a "cold civil war" against all aspects of opposition, in his effort to create a stable country with a conformed and isolated population, who only follows the orders from the president - whose legitimacy cannot be questioned. This harassment has prevented the emergence of an effective civic society and a political opposition, which could counterweight the president's power monopoly.
In this atmosphere the documentary follows a young activists who never gives up believing that Belarus one day will be free and democratic. Franek Viacorka studies at an elite school (lyceum) established by his father to promote the Belarusian language and culture. However, the school has been banned and operating underground since 2003, a victim of the anti-democratic rule of President Lukashenko. Franek and his classmates are both passionate and thoughtful, expressing their critical attitude to the government by issuing an underground newspaper, recording music with activist lyrics and organizing an opposition concert.
Despite the imprisonment of Franek's father and the constant threat of their own arrest, they are undeterred. In the March 2006 presidential re-election, they support the democratic opposition candidate in a mass demonstration in Minsk's main square. While the candidate is powerless to combat Lukashenko's corruption and use of riot police, Franek and his classmates realize that fearlessness is a victory in itself. The documentary is an eye-opener to the hearts and minds of free activists, who fight for an idea larger than themselves.
Recently the regime labelled the documentary as extreme material; unworthy and forbidden to watch in the country!

Belarusian Waltz
Trailer for the award-winning documentary comedy.
Belarus, Europe's last dictatorship, is ruled by the despotic hand of Alexander Lukashenko. The ex-Soviet leader has virtually silenced all but one critic - lone performance artist Alexander Pushkin. He stages public stunts mocking the dictators pretensions. Belarusian Waltz is a comic documentary film, an offbeat tale of post-modern street theater meeting 1930s-style authoritarianism. The film offers a surprising window into the soul of the Belarusian people.
Belarusian Waltz was nominated for Prix Europa and the European Film Academy Award for Best Documentary Film.

Europe's Last Dictator
Irina is the sister of imprisoned Belarusian presidential candidate Andrei Sannikov. Through her eyes this doc charts the violent crackdown that followed the 2010 rigged elections and its dreadful aftermath. Powerful, award-winning photography captures Orwellian images of brute force used against unarmed men and women. We see the state-sponsored torture, murder and kidnap that defines Belarus today. A rare glimpse into Europe's most repressive state.
"We formed a group to lead negotiations with the government, but the troops were called", Iryna Khalip, journalist and wife of presidential candidate Andrei Sannikov, says over the phone. "My husband was badly beaten, we're on the way to the hospital." Suddenly her voice becomes raised with panic. "Looks like we're being arrested. We're on the ground...They're hitting my face!" She screams and then the phone cuts out. This episode is part of Lukashenko's promise to "wring the necks" of all those who joined the opposition during the elections.
Iryna Khalip and Andrei Sannikov were imprisoned after this arrest. Irina Bogdanova, Andrei's sister, has lived in England for 18 years. The other side of Europe, she has turned her house into a refugee camp for all those who have escaped Lukashenko's violent crackdown that night. A crackdown that it appears Lukashenko may have premeditated. Staggering images of the protest show riot police beating their shields in unison, and bloodied, disorientated protestors. "There was no resistance, people were not armed. It's just despicable what happened." Police charged the crowds with their batons striking the defenseless protestors repeatedly. "Human beings don't behave like that, animals don't behave like that", Irina says, her voice tremulous with emotion.
Hundreds of others like Sannikov, including the other presidential candidate Alexander Neklayev, were also brutally beaten and imprisoned that night. With virtually the entire opposition behind bars, it fell to family members to campaign for their release. So Irina and Eva, the daugther of Alexander Neklayev, have now taken to the road to meet world leaders in an attempt to secure the release of their loved ones. While they lobby world politicians to put pressure on Belarus their relatives are brutally tortured. "If I think about how he is doing I just fall apart." In fact, as Lukashenko's popularity wains his violence against the opposition has increased.
From Irina's defiant perpective this doc gets right inside the prison that Lukashenko has turned Belarus into, exposing the true extent of the crisis. "People are so isolated in terms of information in Belarus, especially now that 10 million people live in jail". As the opposition continues to languish in custody, how long will the people of Belarus have to wait before they are set free?

Lyrics:

'Hanging A Potato' And Other Favorite Belarusian Phrases
February 21 is the UN-sponsored International Mother Language Day, an event meant to promote linguistic and cultural diversity. In Belarus, one's mother language can sometimes be a thorny question. Both Belarusian and Russian are official languages of the country, but Belarusian has gradually been marginalized in schools and government offices in recent years. In a 2009 census, 53 percent of respondents named Belarusian as their native language, down 20 percent in 10 years. Less than a quarter said they always speak Belarusian at home. When RFE/RL's Belarusian Service asked people in Minsk to name a favorite Belarusian word or phrase, some were inspired to quote poetry or bits of slang -- but many others struggled to find words.

(Belarus: in Embrace of Stars)
Welcome to discover Belarus under the starry sky! It’s a not large country in Eastern Europe bordered by Poland, Ukraine, Lithuania. Due to northern latitudes we are not able to see the Galaxy center and bright southern constellations. But we have romantic bright summer twilights, long winter nights with plenty of stars, we can observe silver noctilucent clouds and sometimes even auroras. In this short movie you can see Belarusian landscapes, castles and churches in unusual point of view: under the light of the night sky, in embrace of stars.

THE CHILDREN OF THE CLONE
THE CHILDREN OF THE CLONE
'you will be incorporated!'
An award-winning portrait of corporate culture run amok in which a single executive recruits an army of clones to attack, behead and 'incorporate' an old money industrialist into their consumptive system. The film features an aggressive, stellar musical composition by Jim Guthrie. This is the first pixel film by SUPERBROTHERS.
Warnings: Some educational material, blood, violence.
Production notes: Very little is known about the creation process of this film, although recently discovered documents retrieved from the Belarusian State University of Informatics and Radioelectronics suggest that the original reel for the film dated back to the early years of the Stalin era.

The Belarusian Traditional Textile
Belarus has long traditions of making linen, one of the hardest fibers to process. The video presents the outcomes of the exploration of the Belarusian textile traditions by members of ICAN Club, a Minsk group of English learning enthusiasts, who in the process of making this project rediscovered their own culture.
We thank the organizers of the Global Skin Contest for pushing us into this exciting discovery, which opened a new page of our culture and led us to learning so many skills.
Don't judge our humble submission too harshly - it's our first try. Before the Global Skin Project none of us knew how to make videos, but all of us knew how to make some parts of the video: someone liked to play with a photocamera and graphics, others liked sound, and someone had some video editing experience. And we all love Belarus, our country, and are happy to share our cultural heritage with you.
We hope you will like the vibrant colors and the beautiful patterns of our rushniks and will be intrigued by the mystery of the text they bear.
Vote for us!

Yurya Belarusian Folk Song
Music video for Belarusian folk song Yurya (form "Zara" project by GUDA and Drolls) produced and directed by Volya Dzemka.
This ancient Belarusian folk song is about Yurya, the god of Spring. Someone asks him; "Where did you get your feet wet? Where have you been, where are you going?" Yurya answers: "I have been running over the hills and in the valleys, giving wheat to people."
This style of singing and tune is becoming rare. This video hopes to help preserve this musical art form.
Original costumes from late 19th century (Palessya region) were used for production of this video.

"Belarus" Eurovision Song Contest 2010
Powered by http://www.eurovision.tv
It was the band 3+2 which were picked to represent the Host Country of the 2010 Junior Eurovision Song Contest, Belarus. They performed the song Butterflies (and looked like them at some point!) and Europe rewarded them with a place in the Final.
Who are they?
Twin-sisters Alena and Ninel developed the formula of success long ago: stay together -- and success is guaranteed!
The first stage of their creative development was a year of live work on television in one of Belarusian lotteries. The next stage is the casting to the TV-show New Voices of Belarus, participation in the project and becoming finalists. After the bright debut at the big stage, Alena and Ninel were invited to the main state orchestra of Belarus, where they work to date.
Artem Mikhalenka considers New Voices of Belarus to be a significant stage in his creative development. Artem became a finalist of the TV-show and was invited to the leading state orchestra of Belarus, working with which he participated in concerts all over the country and got numerous fans.
Yehiazar Farashan's vocal abilities were discovered by his mother, a teacher of vocal. She insisted that her son started singing, but at first he took it jokingly and resisted until participation in his first international contest and winning there. By today, he's participated in and won numerous contests.
Yuliya Shyshko dreamt of an opera singer career and of the big stage. She was sure she inherited vocal ability from her mother. After the 9th form she entered a music college, department of choral conducting. Being a college student she saw an announcement of the casting to New Voices of Belarus. Yuliya became a finalist of the TV show and got an invitation to the main state orchestra of Belarus, gladly working there to date, performing all over the country and giving joy to the audience.
