Jephthah (Judges 11)
Yahweh apparently demonstrated kindness to Abraham by changing his mind about whether he wanted Isaac sacrificed. What happened when it was Jephthah's daughter's turn under the knife?
Twitter: https://twitter.com/nonstampNSC
I made this new video to remind everyone of what a lovely character the god of the bible is.
I'm sorry, folks, it is just too easy to pull out verses, chapters, and even books, to show him up as an insane psychopath.
And in case you're wondering - yes, I read all of the arguments that claim that Jephthah's daughter wasn't sacrificed at all, whilst I was researching the video.
Sorry, apologists, those arguments just don't hold water. If they did, you'd think at least ONE team of biblical scholars would have come up with a bible translation that suggested as much. None have. Take it up with THEM before you bother with me. And in the meantime - please inform the christians and jews of the world that their bibles are inaccurate after all, if that's what you believe.
In all my videos, I'm going on what the words on the page of the bible actually say.
Music:
Stravinsky - Firebird Suite
Holst - The Planets (Venus, and Uranus)
Wagner - Der Fliegende Hollander, overture.
Sound Effects from The Freesound Project (www.freesound.org)
(No, that wasn't me screaming, nor was I the king who gets stabbed in the guts).
DAMMIT. Typographical errors. I know that the book of the bible is called "Hebrews" (as in plural hebrew), but I cited it without the "s" in two cases (but correctly in one case). I don't know why. Sorry.
Chronology is all over the place, for the sake of a coherent script, and for this I don't apologize. After all, we are told that Yahweh is eternal and doesn't change. "The grass withers, and the flowers fade, but the word of our God stands forever" (Isaiah 40:8) "Whatever is good and perfect comes to us from God above, who created all heaven's lights. Unlike them, He never changes or casts shifting shadows" (James 1:17). "I, the Lord, do not change." (Malachi 3:6)
So, I don't care if the events that I mentioned apart from Jephthah's narrative (such as Joshua, and King Menahem) are out of order.
I put words into Yahweh's mouth in the first half, but only along the following guidelines:
He has an intense interest in virgins and virginity. Indeed, the most important thing we are told about Jephthah's daughter is not her age, not her name, not her star sign, not whether she had a high or low IQ, but that she died having never had sexual intercourse. That's what she was: a virgin - and thats all she was.
I made Yahweh more interested in the sacrifice than the biblical account includes. However, keep in mind that Yahweh acted in Jephthah's favor after he basically offered to make a human sacrifice. The fact that Yahweh accepted this deal, rather than declining to accept on the grounds that it was immoral, is hardly made any worse by having him take an thinly veiled interest in receiving the human sacrifice.
The presence of servants is assumed, but SOMETHING has to explain Jephthah's obvious surprise and severe disappointment that it was his daughter who came out of his home first. If you'd like to argue that it was wrong of me to invent characters like that, and that the deal was struck with the only possible candidates for the sacrifice having been only a wife and a daughter, then feel free - I don't think it will get you very far.
Some suggest that he expected an animal to walk out of his house first. Really, c'mon. I gave you the list of the numbers of animals slaughtered by Moses, do you think Yahweh would be satisfied with a single goat wandering out of Jephthahs front door?
So that's that.
Dear friends, this is the best I can do. Please expect nothing like this any more, its all downhill from here!
Once again, a great pleasure. I wanted to wait until next weekend to put this out but once I found the music for it, I got all excited and just had to get it out there as soon as I could. Now I guess I should get back to work on the final assessment for the current Masters subject I'm on. Oops...!
Thanks so much for your support.

TEXT:
The Book of Judges, Chapter 11
Several verses are skipped to shorten the story without taking away. The following verses were omitted because I feel that the omission does not affect the story at all:
Verses 7-10 (more talk between Jepthah and the elders about Jepthah becoming their leader)
12-28 (Jephthah sending messages back and forth to plan for battle)
Please feel to disagree. As long as you read the original, I'm happy. Don't take my word for it.
For those who speak English as a second language, this version might be easier to read (see above verses to see which were left out)

MISC:
The intermission visuals are all taken from wonderful classical paintings depicting the story of Jepthtah and his Daughter. The battle visuals are taken from the brilliant 19th Century etchings by Paul Gustave Doré.
CORRECTIONS, ETC:
DefenderOfAllMankind rightfully pointed out that Saul was King at the time, not just a war general. Then falchion49 points out that Kings were basically war generals during that time. So everyone is right! Yay!

Judges 11: The Strange Story of Jephthah's Daughter
Third installment of my thoughts about my recent reading of the Bible. This story made me double take when I first encountered it. Believers and theologians seem to tie themselves in logical knots trying to explain this one. Much more to follow in future videos, as and when I have time to put them together.
Screen-captures taken from: http://www.biblegateway.com/
Video footage is all my own, for a change!
Images 'borrowed' from random people and organizations on the internet. Their usage should comply with 'fair use' guidelines, insofar as I'm familiar with them.

Old Testament Idiots - Jephthah
Some people seem to think that Old Testament prophets were somehow superhuman and God could never raise up more people like them. So we're going to do a series on just exactly how flawed they were - and yet God puts them in the "Pantheon of Heroes" in Hebrews 11.
Jephthah is one of the easy targets here. He made a MAJOR boo-boo! He forced the elders to make a vow to God, then HE made a really STUPID vow to God - and because of his religious spirit, followed through with it. I think he would have been better off to just repent for having ever made a vow God didn't want in the first place and forcing the elders to vow.
And for those atheists that want do use this as evidence that God is blood-thirsty and wants you to kill your kids - please not that God DID NOT tell him to do this and the whole point of the story is that it was STUPID and that he shouldn't have vowed.
Lots more coming! Hang on!

Imprint Church Sermon - Wrecked! Jephthah in the Book of Judges.
http://imprintchurch.org/sermon-from-012713-wrecked-jephthah/
In the book of Judges we see a recurring cycle with the Israelites of: Sin - Repentance - Deliverance - Peace, then the cycle starts over.
As we continue our study of the book of Judges at Imprint Church we get to Jephthah. This is the story of a man who offers only part of his life to God. While Jephthah succeeds in winning a war against the Ammonites and becoming the leader of Israel, he also succumbs to making a rash vow to God, resulting in the loss of his only daughter.
Here are some of the key points from this week's sermon on Jephthah along with the time in the recording where you can learn more about it:
God's approval in one area of our life is no guarantee of His approval in all the areas of our life. (8:08)
God wants all of us today. God wants our hearts, our minds, our actions... He wants it all. (11:40)
If this is the kind of story that makes you say, "I don't want to follow a God like that." But let us set something straight ... Description does not equal Prescription in the bible. (24:10)
Just because there are areas of our life where we have victory, doesn't mean that every area of our life will have victory as well. (31:35)
Don't we all have areas of our life that we don't allow God to rule? Where we make our own decisions? We leave God out because we can think we can do it on our own. (31:36)
Following Jesus part-way is like taking up smoking to lose weight. It doesn't make sense. (39:20)

Jephthah's Daughter: A Human (Burnt) Sacrifice to Yahweh?
The Christian Road Warrior administers the "Doomsday Device" to the idea that Jephthah in Judges 11:29-40 offered his daughter to the God of the Bible as a burnt human sacrifice.
While this issue is controversial, it is not beyond reconciliation from the text and the overall context of the consistent message of the Bible about the character of God.
Sincere Christians do differ on the interpretation both on the layman and scholarly levels. However, when there are two contradictory claims, logic dictates that someone is wrong, or BOTH are wrong. The warrior offers three key ways to determine the truth.
While some try argue over a language (Biblical Hebrew) they do not know (and don't bother to even research), let's be clear about certain facts.
Besides the Young's Literal Translation used in the actual video, there are other English versions where the translators recognize the validity of the "or" translation of the Hebrew conjunction in Judges 11:31 so that we have an alternative or option in the vow separated by the conjunction. These translations are: the the Modern King James Version and certain versions of the New American Standard Bible.
In addition, Clarke's Commentary also points out regarding the translation of Judges 11:31:
"...the translation of which, according to the most accurate Hebrew scholars, is this: I will consecrate it to the Lord, or I will offer it for a burnt-offering."
(Clarke's Commentary, Vol. 2-Joshua to Esther, Phillips & Hunt, p. 152).
Another resource confirming that there was no necessary human burnt offering in this passage comes from renowned scholar Gleason L. Archer, who stated:
"But, as Keil and Delitzsch show, this interpretation as a literal human sacrifice cannot stand in the light of the context...His daughter was allowed two months of mourning, not to bewail her approaching loss of life, but only to bewail her virginity...It is stated in verse 39 that after Jephthah had performed his vow and offered her as a 'burnt offering,' 'she knew not man.' This would be a very pointless and inane remark if she had been put to death. But it has perfect relevance if she was devoted to the service of Jehovah at the door of the tabernacle the rest of her life (For references to the devoted women who performed service in connection with the national cultus, cf. Exod. 38:8 and 1 Sam. 2:22; also Anna in the days of Jesus - Luke 2:36,37). The pathos of the situation in this instance did not lie in Jephthah's daughter devoting herself to divine service, but rather in the sure extinction of Jephthah's line, since she was his only child...There was no human sacrifice here." (A Survey of Old Testament Introduction, 266-67).
