Dylan · Believe in yourself
A new documentary that focuses on one of the most important gigs in Manchester's popular music history. The film reflects on Dylan's iconic/iconoclastic performance at the Free Trade Hall in 1966 and assesses the impact of the event on the development of the rock canon. The video features interviews with three people that were in the audience for the infamous 'Judas' concert in Manchester: CP Lee is a renowned authority on Dylan and penned the definitive account of the gig ('Just Like the Night - Revisited'); Mark Makin, artist and photographer, captured images of the gig that have appeared all over the world; and, Mike Bowden, musician and songwriter, reflects from his position as a member of the folk purist section of the 1966 audience. The film was conceived and produced by David Leaver and Lawrence Green of MMUBS, and directed and filmed by Rowan Dickinson Running time 23 minutes

Stuart Memo: JavaScript is the new Punk Rock -- JSConf EU 2012
On 4th June 1976, the Sex Pistols played Manchester's Lesser Free Trade Hall. It was an event that changed the world forever. There were only about 40 people there, but those who attended were inspired to form their own bands, creating Joy Division, The Buzzcocks, The Fall and The Smiths. As these bands fade away, we're long overdue for another such event. Programmers are artists, and JavaScript is the new Punk Rock. My talk will show that JavaScript can be used to write and perform music using the wonderful Web Audio API. I'll talk about why we should do this and why it's the future of music. By the time the conference is over you'll have burned your guitar, remixed a dozen tunes on GitHub, and started a JavaScript band that has its sights set on changing the world. I swear that I was there - Episode featured the Sex Pistols Manchester concert from 6-4-1976
This is a BBC tv show called I swear that I was there. This episode featured the Sex Pistols Manchester concert from 6-4-1976. Lots of interviews from people that were there and some rare footage. On June 4, 1976, four young men took the stage of the Lesser Free Trade Hall in Manchester and, in front of a handful of people, played one of the most important live sets of all time. Alongside Woodstock and Live Aid, the Sex Pistols' performance has been named by critics as one of the most pivotal performances in music history... not necessarily because of the quality of the music - but because of the effect the music had on the audience. The crowd were mesmerized by the power and possibilities of punk - and it inspired them to create their own music that would shape the sound of rock music for decades to come. Members of Joy Division and New Order, the Smiths, the Fall and Buzzcocks were there that night as well as Tony Wilson, a key player in the story of Factory records, the Hacienda, Madchester and beyond. This was truly a gig that changed the world. The truth behind that gig - plus the Pistols' repeat performance six weeks later and their first ever TV appearance - has been shrouded in mystery for thirty years. Until now, everyone's been happy to print the legend. For the first time, here's the truth. Featuring interviews with key players and audience members, "I Swear I Was There" brings pop culture to life thirty years after the Summer of Punk TAnks to squirly for providing

Stars - Simply Red
Simply Red is a British soul band that sold more than 50 million albums over a 25-year career. Their style draws influenced from blue-eyed soul, new romantic, rock, reggae and jazz. Since its early days the main driving force behind the band has been singer Mick Hucknall, now the only original member still in the band. Simply Red originated from the 1976 Sex Pistols gig at the Lesser Free Trade Hall in Manchester, England. Manchester art student Mick Hucknall was one of the many young music fans present, along with original members of the bands Joy Division, The Smiths and Buzzcocks. The first incarnation of the band was a punk group called The Frantic Elevators, which existed for 7 years, with limited releases on local labels, but split in 1984 with only limited local attention and critical acclaim for their final single, "Holding Back the Years". After the demise of The Frantic Elevators, Hucknall linked up with manager Elliot Rashman. By early 1985, Hucknall and Rashman had assembled a band of local session musicians, and began to attract record company attention. Around this time, the group adopted the name Red (after Hucknall's nickname, which denoted hair colour[1]). The name Simply Red came when the manager of a local venue was confused about the band's name and Hucknall replied that the band's name was "Red, simply [just] Red." The resulting misnomer was printed on publicity posters as "Simply Red," and the name stuck. They signed a contract with Elektra in 1985 ...

Dr.Feelgood -- Manchester 76 -- Going Back Home
This was Manchester Free Trade Hall June 1976. Original line-up I believe. Ifound some old 35mm slides collecting dust in a box in my attic. Spent some time carefully restoring/enhancing them, and I uploaded them here for your entertainment, and in the process learning how to use Sony Vegas! I'm aware, looking at these, that I should have made more of an effort to get the guitar in the shots. Too many shots of Wilko's head and shoulders! The music is from The Kursaal, Southend, November 8th 1975. Enjoy!
