Remark the cat who hesitates toward you
In the light of the door which opens on her like a grin
You see the border of her coat is torn and stained with sand
And you see the corner of her eye twist like a crooked pin
She haunted many a low resort
Near the grimy road of Tottenham Court
She flitted about the No Man's Land
From "The Rising Sun" to "The Friend at Hand"
And the postman sighed as he scratched his head
"You'd really had thought she ought to be dead"
And who would ever suppose that
That was Grizabella, the glamour cat
Grizabella, the glamour cat, Grizabella, the glamour cat
And who would ever suppose that
Has the Persephone docked yet?
Yeah, the passengers aare going through customs now
Here they come!
It's Mrs. Aster
Hey Mrs. Aster, over here
Hey, how was the trip
think of me, think of me fondly
when we've said goodbye
remember me, once in a while
please promise me you'll try
when you find, that once again you long
to take your heart back and be free
if you ever find a moment,
spare a thought for me
we never said
our love was evergreen,
or as unchanging as the sea
but if you can still remember
stop and think of me
think of all the things
we've shared and seen
don't think about the things
which might have been
think of me, think of me waking
silent and resigned
imagine me trying too hard
to put you from my mind
recall those days
think back on all those times
think of the things we'll never do
there will never be a day when I won't think of you
RAOUL
can it be, can it be Christine....
what a change,
you're really not a bit
the cockish girl
that once you were
she may not remember me
but I remember her...
CHRISTINE
we never said our love was evergreen
or as unchanging as the sea
but please promise me that sometimes
you will think...
ah ah ah ha ha ha ha ah ahah ha ha ha ha
GIULIETTA:
There is more to love,
So much more,
Than simply making love --
That's easy.
Gazing into eyes,
Pretty eyes,
Which could be any eyes --
That's crazy.
Hands are just hands,
A face is just a face...
They come and go --
They're easy to replace...
There is more to love,
So much more,
Than moon-struck escapades --
That's nothing.
There is peace of mind,
So much peace,
In quiet company --
That's something.
Everyone but him
Seems wrong for me...
Every time I feel
There has to be
More...
If I could hear
The music I heard then,
I'd never let
It fade away again...
Now each time
Love reaches out to me,
I can only feel
There has to be
So much more
To love...
There is more ot love,
Munkustrap:
Of the awful battle
of the pekes and the pollicles
Together with some account
Of the participation of the pugs and the poms
And the intervention of the all great Rumpus Cat!!!
The pekes and the pollicles everyone knows
Are a proud and implacable passionate foes
It is always the same where ever one goes
And the Pugs and the Poms although most people say
That they did not like fighting will once in a way
Show every symptom of wanting to join in the fray
And they
All:
Bark bark bark bark bark bark bark bark bark
Munkustrap:
Until you could hear them all over the park
Now on the occassion of which I shall speak
Almost nothing had happened for nearly a week
(And that's a long time for a Pol or a Peke)
The big police dog was away from his beat
I don’t know the reason but some people think
He slipped into the Wellington's Arms for a drink
And no one at all was about on the street
When a Peke and a Pollicle happened to meet
They did not advance or exactly retreat
But they glared at each other and scraped their hind feet
And they started to
All:
Bark bark bark bark bark bark bark bark
Munkustrap:
Until you could hear them all over the park
Now the Peke although people may say what they please
Is no british dog but Heathen Chinese
And so all the Pekes when they heard the uproar
Some came to the window, some came to the door
And together they started to grumble and wheeze
In their huffery-snuffery Heathen Chinese
But a terrible din is what Pollicles like
For your Pollicle dog is a dour Yorkshire tyke
Male Cats:
There are dogs out of every nation the Irish, the Welsh and the Dane:
The Russian, the Dutch, the Dalmatian,
and even from China and Spain.
The Poodle, the Pom, the Alsatian
And the Mastiff who walks on a chain.
Munkustrap:
And to those that are frisky and frolical,
Let my meaning be perfectly plain:
Male Cats:
That my name it is little Tom Pollicle,
and you'd better not do it again!"
Munkustrap:
And his braw Scottish cousins are snappers and biters
And every dog-jack of them notable fighters
And so they stepped out with their pipers in order
Playing "When the Blue Bonnets Come Over The Border"
And the Pugs and the Poms held no longer aloof
But some from the balcony some from the roof
Joined into the din with a
All:
Bark bark bark bark bark bark bark bark
Munkustrap:
Until you could hear them all over the park
All:
Huffery snuffery huffery snuff!
Munkustrap:
Until you could hear them all over the park
All:
BARK BARK BARK BARK
Munkustrap:
NO!!!!
(Silence)
When these bold heros together assembled
The traffic all stopped
And the Underground trembled
And some of the neightbors were so much afraid
That they started to ring up the Fire Brigade
When suddenly up from a small basement flat
Why who should stalk out but the Great Rumpus Cat!!!!
His eyes were like fireballs fearfully blazing
He gave a great yawn and his jaws were amazing
And when he looked out through the bars of the area
You never saw anything fiercer.......Or hairier
And what with a glare of his eyes and his yawning
The Pekes and the Pollicles quickly took warning
He looked to the sky and he gave a great leap
And every last one of them scattered like sheep!
And when the Police dog returned to his beat
There wasn't a single one left on the street!
All:
[Peron:]
But on the other hand, she's all they have
She's a diamond in their dull gray lives
And that's the hardest kind of stone
It usually survives
And when you think about it, can you recall
The last time they loved anyone at all?
She's not a bauble you can brush aside
She's been out doing what we just talked about, example
Gave us back our businesses, got the English out
And when you think about it, well why not do
One or two of the things we promised to?
But on the other hand, she's slowing down
She's lost a little of that magic drive
But I would not advise those critics present to derive
Any satisfaction from her fading star
She's the one who's kept us where we are
[Officers:]
Christ you know I love you
Did you see I waved
I believe in you and God
So tell me that I'm saved
Christ you know I love you
Did you see I waved
I believe in you and God
So tell me that I'm saved
Jesus I am with you
Touch me, touch me Jesus
Jesus I am on your side
Kiss me, kiss me Jesus
Christ what more do you need to convince you?
That you've made it and you're easily as strong
As the filth from Rome who rape our country
And who've terrorized our people for so long
Christ you know I love you
Did you see I waved
I believe in you and God
So tell me that I'm saved
Christ you know I love you
Did you see I waved
I believe in you and God
So tell me that I'm saved
Jesus I am with you
Touch me, touch me Jesus
Jesus I am on your side
Kiss me, kiss me Jesus
There must be over fifty thousand
Screaming love and all for you
And everyone of fifty thousand
Would do whatever you ask him to
Keep them yelling their devotion
But add a touch of hate at Rome
And you will rise to a greater power
We will win ourselves our home
And you'll get the power and the glory
For ever and ever and ever
And you'll get the power and the glory
For ever and ever and ever
You'll get the power and the glory
(For ever Amen)
For ever and ever and ever
(For ever Amen)
You'll get the power and the glory
(For ever Amen)
For ever and ever and ever
(For ever Amen)
You'll get the power and the glory
(For ever Amen)
For ever and ever and ever
(For ever Amen)
You'll get the power and the glory
(For ever Amen)
For ever and ever and ever
(For ever Amen)
You'll get the power and the glory
(For ever Amen)
For ever and ever and ever
(For ever Amen)
Neither you Simon, nor the fifty thousand
Nor the Romans, nor the Jews
Nor Judas, nor the twelve
Nor the priests, nor the scribes
Nor doomed Jerusalem itself
Understand what power is
Understand what glory is
Understand at all, understand at all
If you knew, all that I knew my poor Jerusalem
You'd see the truth but you'd live a lie
But you'd live a lie while you live
Your troubles are many
Poor Jerusalem
To conquer death
You only have to die
Poor fool, he makes me laugh!
Haha,
Haha!
Time I tried to get a better better half !
COUNTESS AND CHORUS
Poor fool, he doesn't know!
Hoho,
Hoho! etc.
If he knew the truth, he'd never, ever go!
(Suddenly from nowhere, we hear the voice of the
PHANTOM)
PHANTOM'S VOICE
Did I not instruct that Box Five was to be kept empty?
MEG (terrified)
He's here: the Phantom of the Opera . . .
(General reaction of bewilderment.
CHRISTINE looks fearfully about her)
CHRISTINE
It's him . . . I know it . . . it's him . . .
CARLOTTA (Finding a scapegoat in CHRISTINE,
hisses at her)
Your part is silent, little toad!
(But the PHANTOM has heard her)
PHANTOM'S VOICE
A toad, madame? Perhaps it is you
who are the toad . . .
(Again general unease. CARLOTTA and the
CONDUCTOR confer and pick up from the opening of the
scene)
CARLOTTA (As the COUNTESS)
Serafimo, away with this pretence!
You cannot speak, but kiss me in my croak!
(Instead of singing she emits a great croak like a toad. A
stunned silence. CARLOTTA is as amazed as anyone but
regains herself and continues. More perturbing,
however, is a new sound: the PHANTOM is laughing -
quietly at first, then more and more hysterically)
CARLOTTA (as the COUNTESS)
Poor fool, he makes me laugh -
Hahahahaha!
Croak, croak, croak,
croak, croak, croak, etc.
(As before. The PHANTOM'S laughter rises. The
croaking continues as the chandelier's lights blink on
and off. The PHANTOM'S laughter, by this time
overpowering, now crescendos into a great cry):
PHANTOM'S VOICE
Behold! She is singing to bring down the
chandelier!
(CARLOTTA looks tearfully up at the MANAGERS ' box
and shakes her head)
(ANDRE and FIRMIN hurry out of the box onto the
stage. PIANGI ushers the now sobbing CARLOTTA
offstage, while the MANAGERS tackle the audience)
FIRMIN
Ladies and gentlemen, the performance will
continue in ten minutes' time . . .
(He addresses Box Five, keeping one eye on the
chandelier as it returns to normal)
. . . when the role of the Countess will be sung by Miss
Christine Daae.
ANDRE (improvising)
In the meantime, ladies and gentlemen, we shall be
giving you the ballet from Act Three of tonight's opera.
(to the CONDUCTOR)
Maestro - the ballet - now!
(The MANAGERS leave, the stage is cleared and music
starts again. The BALLET GlRLS enter as a sylvan glade
flies in. They begin the Dance of the Country Nymphs.
Upstage, behind the drop, a series of threatening
shadows of the PHANTOM. MEG is aware of them and
dances out of step. When this culminates in one
gigantic, oppressive, bat-like shadow, the garotted body
of JOSEPH BUQUET falls onto the stage, causing the
sylvan glade to fly out. Pandemonium.)
CHRISTINE (calling for help)
Raoul! Raoul!
(RAOUL runs on stage and embraces her)
RAOUL (to CHRISTINE, leading her away)
Christine, come with me . . .
CHRISTINE
No. . . to the roof. We'll be safe there.
(CHRISTINE and RAOUL hurry off)
FIRMIN (Attempting to placate the audience as STAGE-
HANDS and POLICEMEN crowd onto the stage)
Ladies and gentlemen, please remain in your seats. Do
Gustave:
Please, Miss Giry! I want to go back! I want my mother...
Meg:
The world is hard, the world is mean, it's hard to keep you conscience clean...
Gustave:
(speaking) Please, you're hurting me!
Meg:
The sea is calm
The sea is gray
It washes everything away...
Gustave:
(speaking frantically) I can't swim!
Meg:
(speaking) Don't worry, it's almost over.
(singing) Sink into the deep...
Blue, and cool, and kind...
Then drift off to sleep...
Let the past unwind...
Leave the hurt behind...
Christine:
(shouting) GUSTAVE!
Gustave:
(shouts back) Mother!
Meg:
(speaking) No, I'm not done yet!
Phantom:
(speaking, demanding angrily) Let go of the boy now!
Meg:
(speaking, aiming a gun at Gustave) Not another step!
Phantom:
(speaking, lowers voice slightly) Let go of him, girl, or I promise you, I-
Meg:
(speaking) Not another word!
(singing, a hint of madness to her voice) Always wondered how to make you watch, well, watch me NOW!
I took a little trip to Coney Island
I took a little trip because of you. (addressing the Phantom)
I did as Mother said, and followed where you lead
And tried to do what little I could do...
Well, here's the way it works on Coney Island.
They make you pay for every little crumb!
I gave what they would take!
I gave it for YOUR sake!
Now, look at me, and see what I've become!
Bathing beauty, on the beach
Bathing beauty in her dressing room
Bathing beauty, in the dark!
On their laps!
In their arms!
Madame Giry:
(speaking, emotionally) MEG!
Meg:
IN THEIR BEDS!
Madame Giry:
(speaking) Meg, my little Meg....
Phantom:
(speaking, slightly unsure) What are you saying?
Meg:
Who helped you raise the money?
Who helped the permits come through?
Who greased the wheels of your high-flying deals?
Bought you time when the bills came due?
Who swayed the local bosses?
Curried favor with the press?
No, not HER.
And who kept singing?
Desperate for your favor?
(starting to break down) Who kept dancing?
Hoping you would save her?
(practically shout-singing) Who kept dying?!
And THIS is what you gave her!
(suddenly quiet and eerily calm) Now that I've got you're attention at last...
(loud again) Here's the big finish and then you can go!
Phantom:
(somewhat pleading, yet soothing) Give me the gun, Meg.
Give me the hurt and the pain and the gun, Meg.
Give me the blame for not seeing the things that you've done, Meg.
Give me the gun, Meg.
Give me the chance to see you clear at last…
Meg:
(trance-like) See me clear at last…
Phantom:
You feel ugly, you feel used
You feel broken, you feel bruised
Ah, but me, I can see all the beauty underneath…
Meg:
Yes…
Phantom:
You've been robbed of love and pride
Been ignored and pushed aside
Even so, I still know, there is beauty underneath…
Meg:
Yes…!
Phantom:
Diamonds never sparkle bright
If they aren't set just right
Beauty sometimes goes unseen
We can't all be like Christine…
Meg:
(speaking)
(whispering) Christine…
(slightly louder) Christine…
(shouting) ALWAYS CHRISTINE!
(shoots the gun at Christine)
(speaking, suddenly regretting) No, I didn't mean to!
Gustave:
(speaking, shouting and sobbing) Mother dear, say something, say anything!
Phantom:
(speaking frantically, addressing Madame Giry) Giry, go get help! GO!!!
Gustave:
(speaking) Where's Papa, he should be here!
Where's Papa?
Christine:
(speaking weakly)
Your father…
Your REAL father…
(sings faintly) Look with your heart
And not with your eyes
The heart understands
The heart never…(voice breaking slightly) …lies…
Believe what it feels
And trust what it shows
Look with your heart
The heart always knows…
Love is not always beautiful
Not at the start…
Gustave:
(crying softly) So open your arms...
Christine:
And close your eyes tight…
Gustave:
Look with your heart…
Christine:
And when you find…(voice really faltering now) …love…
Gustave:
(cries out in despair) NOOOOO!!!!
-brief musical interlude-
Phantom:
(takes Christine into his arms and sings sadly) Once upon another time,
Our story had only begun…
I had a taste of joy
The most I ever knew…
Now there isn't any time,
And somehow our story is done…
And what about the boy?
What am I to do?
Christine:
Just love
Just live
And give what you can give
And take the love that you deserve
Phantom and Christine:
Just love
Just live
And give-
Phantom:
All that I have!
And take what little I deserve
Christine:
Come closer, I beg you…
Closer still…
Remember…love never…dies….
Kiss me one last time…
(Phantom and Christine kiss, Christine dies in his arms)
(Pilate)
I dreamed I met a Galilean
A most amazing man
He had that look
You very rarely find
The haunting hunted kind
I asked him
To say what had happened
How it all began
I asked again
He never said a word
As if he hadn't heard
And next the room was full
Of wild and angry men
They seemed to hate this man
They fell on him and then disappeared again
Then I saw thousands of millions
Crying for this man
And then I heard them mentioning my name
PERON
Your little body's slowly breaking down
You're losing speed, you're losing strength--not style--
that goes on
Flourishing forever, but your eyes, your smile
Do not have the sparkle of your fantastic past
If you climb one more mountain it could be your last
I'm not that ill--bad moments come but they go
Some days are fine, some a little bit harder
But that doesn't mean
We should give up our dream
Have you ever seen
Me defeated?
Don't you forget what I've been through and yet
I'm still standing.
PERON
Eva, you are dying.
So what happens now?
Where am I going to?
PERON
Where do we go from here?
This isn't where we intended to be
We had it all, you believed in me,
I believed in you.
Certainties disappear
What do we do for our dream to survive?
How do we keep all our passions alive,
As we used to do?
Deep in my heart I'm concealing
Things that I'm longing to say,
Scared to confess what I'm feeling,
Frightened you'll slip away...
You must love me...
You must love me...
(instrumental)
Why are you at my side?
How can I be any use to you now?
Give me a chance, and I'll make you see
How nothing has changed.
Deep in my heart I'm concealing
Things that I'm longing to say,
Scared to confess what I'm feeling,
Frightened you'll slip away...
You must love me...
You must love me...

It seems to me a strange thing, mystifying
That a man like you can waste his time
On such a concubine
Yes, I can understand that she amuses
But to let her kiss you, stroke your hair
That's hardly in your line
It's not that I object to her profession
But she doesn't fit in well
With what you teach and say
It doesn't help us if you are inconsistent
They only need a small
Excuse to put us all away
Who are you to criticise her?
Who are you to despise her?
Leave her, leave her, let her be now
Leave her, leave her, she's with me now
If your slate is clean then you can throw stones
If your slate is not then leave her alone
I'm amazed that men like you
Can be so shallow thick and slow
There is not a man among you
Who knows or cares if I came or go
Save Judas
No you're wrong, you're very wrong
How can you say that?
With One Look Lyrics:
They don’t want me any more,
They all say I’m through
Well it’s time they knew...
With on look
I can break your heart
With one look
I play every part
I can make your sad heart sing
With one look you’ll know
All you need to know.
With one smile
I’m the girl next door
Or the love that you’ve hungered for
When I speak it’s with my soul
I can play any role
No words can tell
The stories my eyes tell
Watch me when I frown
You can’t write that down
You know I’m right
It’s there in black and white
When I look your way
You’ll hear what I say.
Yes, with one look
I put words to shame
Just one look
Sets the screen aflame
Silent music starts to play
One tear from my eye
Makes the whole world cry.
With one look
They’ll forgive the past
They’ll rejoice: I’ve returned at last
To my people in the dark
Still out there in the dark...
Silent music starts to play
With one look you’ll know
All you need to know.
With one look
I’ll ignite a blaze
I’ll return to my glory days
They’ll say norma’s back at last.
This time I’m staying
I’m staying for good
I’ll be back
Where I was born to be
With one look
You were once
my one companion . . .
you were all
that mattered . . .
You were once
a friend and father -
then my world
was shattered . . .
Wishing you were
somehow here again . . .
wishing you were
somehow near . . .
Sometimes it seemed
if I just dreamed,
somehow you would
be here . . .
Wishing I could
hear your voice again . . .
knowing that I
never would . . .
Dreaming of you
won't help me to do
all that you dreamed
I could . . .
Passing bells
and sculpted angels,
cold and monumental,
seem, for you,
the wrong companions -
you were warm and gentle . . .
Too many years
fighting back tears . . .
Why can't the past
just die . . .?
Wishing you were
somehow here again . . .
knowing we must
say goodbye . . .
Try to forgive . . .
teach me to live . . .
give me the strength
to try . . .
No more memories,
no more silent tears . . .
No more gazing across
the wasted years . . .
Help me say
RAOUL
One more.
BARTENDER
Oh, buddy, don't you think you've had enough? It's practically morning already.
RAOUL
One more, I said!
BARTENDER
All, right, all right. My shift is over anyway, so let's settle the bill, ok? Jeez, you're in a bad way aren't you? Worse than most that end up here. Here's the morning shift - maybe he'll know what to do with you.
RAOUL
Yes, what to do with me. That's the question, isn't it? That's always been the question. Ever since the beginning...
She looks for sympathy
I give her sorrow
She asks for honesty
I've none to borrow
She needs my tender kiss
She begs it of me
I give her ugliness
Why does she love me?
She yearns for higher things
Things I can't give her
The rush that music brings
I can't deliver
And even when she sings
And soars above me
I try to clip her wings
Why does she love me?
One more drink, sir. That's what I need don't you think, sir? Leave the hurt behind.
Do you hear me? Another drink!
She wants the man I was
Husband and father
At least she thinks does
She needn't bother
Beneath this mask I wear
There's nothing of me
Just horror, shame, despair
Why does she love me?
How 'bout you, sir? Tell me what am I to do, sir? Leave the hurt behind.
Morning, Bernie, coffee please! Hurry up before I freeze. I'll just take it black. Mother said I'd find you here.
RAOUL
Miss Giry...
Do you know where you are?
RAOUL
Hell, I imagine
Around here they call it suicide hall. It's where people end up when they don't know where else to go. The hopeless, the desperate. Good place to step off the side of the pier and quietly vanish.
RAOUL
You seem to be a regular.
Me? I come here to swim
This town is coarse and cold and mean
It's hard to keep your conscience clean
Faceless in the crowd
Anything's allowed
And so I come at dawn each day
Come to wash it all away
Sink into the sea
Blue and cool and kind
Let it set me free
Let the past unwind
Leave the hurt behind
You should never have come to America. It's not a place for people like you and Christine. It's too easy to forget who you are and where you belong. That's why Mother says you must leave here. Now. Take your wife and the boy and go.
RAOUL
Leave? What about tonight? The concert, the money? Am I to just run away from him?
When the sun rises tomorrow we can all start again. Clean.
Sail across the sea
Put us out of mind
Close your eyes and flee
Let yourself stay blind
Stop, you robbers, your little number's up
One of you has stolen my precious golden cup
Joseph started searching through his brothers' sacks
Everyone was nervous, no one could relax
Who's the thief? Who's the thief?
Is it Reuben? No, is it Simeon? No
Is it Naphtali? No, is it Dan? No
Is it Asher? No, is it Isaachar? No
Is it Levi? No, who's the man?
Is it Zebulun? No, is it Gad? No
Is it Judah? No, is it him? Could it be
Could it be, could it possibly be Benjamin?
Yes, yes, yes
Benjamin, you nasty youth
Your crime has shocked me to the core
Never in my whole career have I encountered this before
Guards, seize him, lock him in a cell
Throw the key into the Nile as well
Each of the brothers fell to his knees
Show him some mercy, oh, mighty one, please
He would not do this, he must have been framed
Whistle down the wind
Let your voices carry
Drown out all the rain
Light a patch of darkness
Traecherous and scary
Howl at the stars,
Whisper when you're sleeping
I'll be there to hold you
I'll be there to stop the chills and all the weeping
Make it clear and strong
So the whole night long
Every signal that you send
Until the very end
I will not abandon you, my precious friend
So try and stem the tide
then you'll raise a banner
Send a flare up in the sky,
Try to burn a torch
And try to build a bonfire
Every signal that you send
Untill the very end I'm there
So whistle down the wind
For I have always been right there
Oh yeah
Howl at the stars
Whisper when you're sleeping
I'll be there to hold you
I'll be there to stop the chills and all the weeping
Try and stem the tide
Then you'll raise a banner
Send a flare up in the sky,
Try to burn a torch
And try to build a bonfire
Every signal that you send
Untill the very end I'm there
So whistle down the wind
APOSTLES
What's the buzz? Tell me what's happening...
JESUS
Why should you want to known?
Don't you mind about the future, don't you try to think ahead
Save tomorrow for tomorrow, think about today instead
APOSTLES
What's the buzz? Tell me what's happening...
JESUS
I could give you facts and figures - even give you plans and forecasts
Even tell you where I'm going -
APOSTLES
When do we ride into Jerusalem?...
JESUS
Why should want you known?
Why are you obsessed with fighting times and fates you can't defy?
If you knew the path we're riding you'd understand it less than I
APOSTLES
What's the buzz? Tell me what's happening...
MARY MAGDALENE
Let me try to cool down your face a bit...
JESUS
Mary - mm - that is good
While you prattle through your supper - where and when and who and how
She alone has tried to give me what I need right here and now
APOSTLES
We have all been blind
And yet the answer is staring us in the face
This could be the chance to ensnare our clever friend
We're listening, go on
We shall play his game
Perform his work
But remember we hold the ace
For if Miss Daae sings he is certain to attend
We are certain the doors are barred
We are certain the police are there
We are certain they're armed
The curtain falls
His reign will end
Raoul, I'm frightened
Don't make me do this
It scares me
Don't put me through this ordeal by fire
He'll take me, I know
We'll be parted forever
He won't let me go
What I once used to dream, I now dread
If he finds me it won't ever end
And he'll always be there, singing songs in my head
He'll always be there, singing songs in my head
You said yourself
He was nothing but a man
Yet while he lives
He will haunt us 'til we're dead
Twisted every way what answer can I give?
Am I to risk my life to win the chance to live?
Can I betray the man who once inspired my voice?
Do I become his prey?
Do I have any choice?
He kills without a thought
He murders all that's good
I know I can't refuse
And yet I wish, I could
Oh God, if I agree
What horrors wait for me
In this, the Phantom's Opera
Christine, Christine
Don't think that I don't care
But every hope and every prayer
Rests on you now
Seal my fate tonight
I hate to have to cut the fun short
But the jokes wearing thin
Let the audience in
PHANTOM:
Wandering child, so lost, so helpless, yearning for my guidance
CHRISTINE:
Angel or father? Friend or phantom? Who is it there, staring?
PHANTOM:
Have you forgotten your Angel?
CHRISTINE:
Angel, oh, speak! What endless longings echo in this whisper!
PHANTOM:
Too long you've wandered in winter, far from my fathering gaze
CHRISTINE:
Wildly my mind beats against you...
PHANTOM:
You resist...
BOTH:
...Yet the (your) soul obeys
PHANTOM:
Angel of Music! You denied me, turning from true beauty
Angel of Music! Do not shun me! Come to your strange Angel!
CHRISTINE:
Angel of Music! I denied you, turning from true beauty
Angel of Music! My protector! Come to me, strange Angel!
PHANTOM:
I am your Angel of Music…
Come to me, Angel of Music...
RAOUL:
No, Christine! Wait!
CHRISTINE:
Raoul!
RAOUL:
Tell me before I waltz out of your life
Before turning my back on the past
Forgive my impertinent behavior
But how long do you think this pantomime can last?
Tell me before I ride off in the sunset, there's one thing I never got clear
How can you claim you're a savior
When those who oppose you are stepped on
Or cut up, or simply disappear?
Tell me before you get onto your bus
Before joining the forgotten brigade
How can one person like me, say
Alter the time-honored way the game is played?
Tell me before you get onto your high horse
Just what you expect me to do, I don't care what the Bourgeoisie say
I'm not in business for them but to give all my descamisados
A magical moment or two
There is evil, ever around
Fundamental system of government, quite incidental
So what are my chances of honest advances? I'd say low
Better to win by admitting my sin than to lose with a halo
Tell me before I seek worthier pastures and thereby restore self-esteem
How can you be so short-sighted
To look never further than this week or next week
Than have no impossible dream?
Allow me before you slink off to the sidelines
I'll pay your fair gift three cheers but first tell me who'd be delighted
To witness me the top world's greatest problems
From war to pollution, no hope of solution
Even if I live for one hundred years
There is evil, ever around
Fundamental system of government, quite incidental
So go, if you're able to somewhere unstable and stay there
Whip up your hate in some tottering state
But not here, dear, is that clear, dear?
Oh, what I'd give for a hundred years
But the physical interferes, everyday more, Oh my Creator
What is the good of the strongest heart
I've been U.N.C.O.U.P.L.E.D.
I can't bring myself to say it. No siree
I'm a carriage with no marriage
I'm a van without a man
I've been U.N.C.O.U.P.L.E.D.
Was I corroded or overloaded
Maybe I shamed him
Who'd have blamed him
If he thought me second-class
Went in search of chrome and brass
Went to find another fool like me
And I'm just U.N.C.O.U.P.L.E.D.
I can't seem to stop C.R.Y.I.N.G.
People look and me and think,
"There she goes the missing link"
She's been U.N.C.O.U.P.L.E.D.
And I'm just U.N.C.O.U.P.L.E.D.
But I'll get my R.E.V.E.N.G.E.
He'll come crawling back one day
And I'll turn to him and say,
(Andrew Lloyd Webber - Tim Rice)
PILATE
Who is this broken man cluttering up my hallway?
Who is this unfortunate?
SOLDIER
Someone Christ, King of the Jews.
PILATE
Oh, so this is Jesus Christ, I am really quite surprised.
You look so small
Not a King at all.
We all know that you are news,
But are you King? King of the Jews?
JESUS
That's what you say.
PILATE
What do you mean by that?
That is not an answer.
You're deep in trouble friend.
Someone Christ, King of the Jews.
How can someone in you state be so cool about his fate?
An amazing thing, this silent King.
Since you come from Galilee, then you need not come to me.
You're Herod's race! You're Herod's case!
Hosanna Heysanna Sanna Sanna Ho
Sanna Hey Sanna Ho and how
Hey JC, JC please explain to me?
You had everything. Where is it now?
Pilate:
And so the king is once again my guest
And why is this? Was Herod unimpressed?
Caiaphas:
We turn to Rome to sentence Nazareth
We have no law to put a man to death
We need him crucified - it's all you have to do
We need him crucified - it's all you have to do
Pilate:
Talk to me Jesus Christ
You've been brought here - manacled, beaten
By your own people - do you have the first idea
Why you deserve it?
Listen king of the Jews
Where is your kingdom?
Look at me - am I a Jew?
Jesus:
I have got no kingdom in this world -
I'm through, through, through
Mob:
Talk to me Jesus Christ
Jesus:
There may be a kingdom for me somewhere - if I only knew
Pilate:
Then you're a king?
Jesus:
It's you who say I am
I look for truth and find that I get damned
Pilate:
But what is truth? Is truth unchanging law?
We both have truths - are mine the same as yours?
Mob:
Crucify him!
Pilate:
What do you mean? You'd crucify your king?
Mob:
We have no king but Caesar!
Pilate:
He's done no wrong - no not the slightest thing
Mob:
We have no king but Caesar! Crusify him!
Pilate:
I see no reason - I find no evil
This man is harmless so why does he upset you?
He's just misguided - thinks he's important
But to keep you vultures happy I shall flog him
Mob:
Crucify him!
THIRTY-NINE LASHES
Pilate:
Where are you from Jesus? What do you want Jesus? Tell me
You've got to be careful - you could be dead soon -
Could well be
Why do you not speak when I have your life in my hands?
How can you stay quiet? I don't believe you understand
Jesus:
You have nothing in your hands
Any power you have comes to you from far beyond
Everything is fixed and you can't change it
Pilate:
You're a fool Jesus Christ - how can I help you?
Mob:
Pilate! Crucify him!
Remember Caesar - you have a duty
To keep the peace so crucify him!
Remember Caesar - you'll be demoted, you'll be deported
Crucify him!
Pilate:
Don't let me stop your great selfdestruction
Die if you want to you misguided martyr
I wash my hands of your demolition
When I was a kid, I played on this street
I always loved illusion
I thought make-believe was truer than life
But now it's all confusion
Please, can you tell me what's happening?
I just don't know anymore
If this is real, how should I feel?
What should I look for?
John Barrowman
If you were smart, you would keep on walking
Out of my life as fast as you can
I'm not the one you should pin your hopes on
You're falling for the wrong kind of man
This is crazy! You know we should call it a day
Sound advice, great advice
Let's throw it away
I can't control all the things I'm feeling
I haven't got a prayer
If I'm a fool, well
I'm too much in love to care
I knew where I was, I'd given up hope
Made friends with disillusion
No one in my life, but I look at you
And now it's all confusion
Sarah Brightman
Please, can you tell me what's happening?
I just don't know anymore
If this is real, how should I feel?
What should I look for?
I thought I had everything I needed
My life was set, my dreams were in place
My heart could see way into the future
All of that goes when I see your face
I should hate you
There I was, the world in my hand
Can one kiss, kiss away
Everything I planned?
I can't control all the things I'm feeling
I'm floating in mid-air
I know it's wrong, but,
I'm too much in love to care
Both
I thought I had everything I needed
My life was set, my dreams were in place
My heart could see way into the future
All of that goes when I see your face
This is crazy! You know we should call it a day
John Barrowman
Sound advice
Sarah Brightman
Great advice
Both
Let's throw it away...
I can't control all the things I'm feeling
We're floating in mid-air
If we are fools, well,
We're too much in love to care
If we are fools, well,
Phantom:
Ten long years living a mere facade of life. Ten long years wasting my time with smoke and noise. In my mind I hear melodies pure and unearthly, but I find I can't give them a voice without you. My Christine, my Christine. Lost and gone, lost and gone...
The day starts, the day ends. Time crawls by. Night steals in pacing the floor. The moments creep, yet I can't bear to sleep 'til I hear you sing. And weeks pass, and months pass. Seasons fly. Still you don't through the door, and in a haze I count the silent days 'til I hear you sing once more.
And sometimes at nighttime I dream that you are there, but wake holding nothing but the empty air...
And years come, and years go. Time runs dry. Still I ache down to the core. My broken soul can't be live and whole 'til I hear you sing once more.
And music, your music, it teases at my ear. I turn and it fades away and you're not here!
Do you remember the good years in Canaan?
The summers were endlessly gold
The fields were a patchwork of clover
The winters were never too cold
We'd stroll down the boulevards together
And everything round us was fine
Now the fields are dead and bare
No joie de vivre anywhere
Et maintenant we drink a bitter wine
Those Canaan days we used to know
Where have they gone, where did they go?
Eh bien, raise your berets to those Canaan days
Do you remember those wonderful parties?
The splendor of Canaan's cuisine
Our extravagant, elegant soirees
The gayest the Bible has seen
It's funny but since we lost Joseph
We've gone to the other extreme
No one comes to dinner now, we'd only eat them anyhow
I even find I'm missing Joseph's dreams
Those Canaan days we used to know
Where have they gone, where did they go?
Eh bien, raise your berets to those Canaan days
It's funny but since we lost Joseph
We've gone to the other extreme
Perhaps we all misjudged the lad
Perhaps he wasn't quite that bad
And how we miss his entertaining dreams
Those Canaan days we used to know
Where have they gone, where did they go?
Eh bien, raise your berets to those Canaan days
Priest)
Good Caiaphas
The council waits for you
The Pharisees and priests
Are here for you
(Caiaphas)
Ah gentlemen, you know why we are here
With not much time, and quite a problem here
(Crowd outside)
Hosanna! Superstar!
(Annas)
Listen to that howling mob
Of blockheads in the street
A trick or two with lepers
And the whole town's on its feet
(All)
He is dangerous! He is dangerous!
(Crowd)
Jesus Christ, Superstar
Tell us that you are who they say you are
(Priests)
He is dangerous, dangerous
That man is in town right now
To whip up some support
A rabble rousing mission
That I think we must abort
He is dangerous
(Crowd)
Jesus Christ, Superstar
(Priests)
He is dangerous
Look Caiaphas
They are right outside our yard
Quick Caiaphas
Go call the Roman guard
(Caiaphas)
No wait, we need a more permanent solution to our problem.
(Annas)
What shall we do about Jesus of Nazareth?
Miracle worker, pilgrim or fool
(Priest)
No riots, no Romans, no fighting, no slogans
(Caiaphas)
One thing to say for him, Jesus is cool
(Annas)
We dare not leave him to his own devices
His half-witted fans will get out of control
(Priest)
But how can we stop him, his glamour increases
With every minute, he's top of the pole
(Caiaphas)
I see bad things arising
The crowd crown him King
Which the Romans would ban
I see blood and destruction
Our elimination because of one man
Blood and destruction
Because of one man
(Voices)
What can we do about this Jesusmania?
How can we deal with the carpenter king?
Where do we start with a man who is bigger
Than John was when John did his baptism thing?
(Caiaphas)
Fools! You have no perception
The stakes we are gambling
Are frighteningly high
We must crush him completely
So like John before him
This Jesus must die
For the sake of the nation
This Jesus must die
Must die, must die
We've been sitting on the fence for far too long
Why let him upset us?
Caiaphas, let him be
All those imbeciles will see
He really doesn't matter
Jesus is important
We've let him go his way before
And while he starts a major war
We theorize and chatter
He's just another scripture
Thumping hack from Galilee
The difference is they call him King
The difference frightens me
What about the Romans?
When they see King Jesus crowned
Do you think they'll stand around
Cheering and applauding?
What about our people?
If they see we've lost our nerve
Don't you think that they deserve
Something more rewarding?
They've got what they want
They think so, anyway
If he's what they want
Why take their toy away?
He's a craze
Put yourself in my place
I can hardly step aside
Can not let my hands be tied
I am law and order
What about our priesthood?
Don't you see that we could fall?
If we are to last at all
We can not be divided
Then say so to the council
But don't rely on subtlety
Frighten them or they won't see
Then we are decided
(Moneylenders and Merchants)
Roll on up -- for my price is down
Come on in -- for the best in town
Take your pick of the finest wine
Lay your bets on this bird of mine
Name your price I got everything
Come and buy it's all going fast
Borrow cash on the finest terms
Hurry now while stocks still last
(Jesus)
My temple should be a house of prayer
But you have made it a den of thieves
Get up, get out
My time
Is almost through
Little left to do
After all
I've tried for three years
Seems like thirty
Seems like thirty
(Crowd)
See my eyes I can hardly see
See me stand I can hardly walk
I believe you can make me whole
See my tongue I can hardly talk
See my skin I'm a mass of blood
See my legs I can hardly stand
I believe you can make me well
See my purse I'm a poor, poor man
Will you touch, will you mend me Christ?
Won't you touch, will you heal me Christ?
Will you kiss, you can heal me Christ
Won't you kiss, won't you pay me Christ?
(Jesus)
Oh, there's too many of you, don't push me
Oh, there's too little of me, don't crowd me
(The Phantom Jumps out with a sword. He kicks Raoul over. Raoul Jumps up with his sword)
Phantom: (Still fighting) Bravo, Monsieur! You've figured out my secret! Such spirited words! (Swings sword at Raoul)
Raoul: (Grunts)
Phantom: Let's see, Monsieur, how fare you dare go! (Another swing)
(They sword fight)
(Raoul Jumps away and falls over)
(The Phantom Jumps at Raoul as he's still down)
(Raoul Jumps up and begins to sword fight)
(They fight all around the graveyard)
Raoul: Stay back!
Phantom: That's right, that's right, Monsieur! Keep fighting this way! (Two more swings)
Raoul: You can't win her love by making her your prisoner! Leave her alone!
Phantom: I'm here, I'm here, Monsieur: The Angel of Death! C'mon, c'mon, Monsieur, don't stop! Don't stop! Keep fighting! Swing at me, Monsieur!
(They get their swords caught together in something. Erik the Phantom pushes Raoul away to break them)
(The Phantom happens to stab Raoul in the arm)
(Raoul falls to the ground)
(The Phantom Jumps on Raoul and tries to Jamb his sword into Raoul. Roul holds the sword up. The Phantom happens to cut down RAOUL's chest a bit)
Raoul: (Groans in pain)
CHRISTINE: Raoul!
PHANTOM: And now, Monsieur! You shall die.
(Raoul continues to hold the sword up with one hand. He reaches his arm out for his sword and finally grabs hold of it and swipes the Phantom off him)
RAOUL: Now we end this!
(They continue to sword fight)
(Raoul knocks the Phantom back to the ground, kicks his sword away and is about to stab him)
CHRISTINE
No, Raoul...(Raoul looks at Christine) no! Not like this.
(Raoul looks at the Phantom one last time)
(Raoul puts his sword away then Raoul lifts Christine onto his horse. The Phantom gets up)
Phantom: DON'T GO!
(Raoul and Christine exit. As they are exiting, the PHANTOM declaims in fury)
(He has been foiled again):
PHANTOM: Now let it be war upon you both!
The Rum Tum Tigger is a curious cat
If you offer me pheasant, I'd rather have grouse
If you put me in a house, I would much prefer a flat
If you put me in a flat, I would rather have a house
If you set me on a mouse, then I only want a rat
If you set me on a rat, then I'd rather chase a mouse
The Rum Tum Tigger is a curious cat
And there isn't any need for me to shout it
For he will do as he do do
And there's nothing doing about it
The Rum Tum Tigger is a terrible bore
When you let me in, then I want to go out
I'm always on the wrong side of every door
And as soon as I'm at home, then I'd like to get about
I like to lie in the bureau drawer
And I make such a fuss if I can't get out
The Rum Tum Tigger is a curious cat
And there isn't any need for you to doubt it
For he will do as he do do
And there's no doing anything about it
The Rum Tum Tigger is a curious beast
My disobliging ways are a matter of habit
If you offer me fish, then I always want a feast
When there isn't any fish, then I won't eat rabbit
If you offer me cream, then I sniff and sneer
For I only like what I find for myself
So you'll catch me in it right up to my ears
If you put it away on the larder shelf
The Rum Tum Tigger is artful and knowing
The Rum Tum Tigger
Doesn't care for a cuddle
But I'll leap upon your lap in the middle of your sewing
For there's nothing I enjoy like a horrible muddle
The Rum Tum Tigger is a curious cat
The Rum Tum Tigger doesn't care for a cuddle
The Rum Tum Tigger is a curious cat
And there isn't any need for me to spout it
For he will do as he do do
PHANTOM
Passarino - go away!
For the trap is set and waits for
its prey!
You have come here
in pursuit of
your deepest urge,
in pursuit of
that wish,
which till now
has been silent,
silent...
I have brought you,
that our passions
may fuse and merge -
in your mind
you've already
succumbed to me,
dropped all defences,
completely succumbed to me -
now you are here with me:
no second thoughts,
you've decided,
decided...
Past the point
of no return -
no backward glances:
the games we've played
till now are at
an end...
Past all thought
of "if" or "when" -
no use resisting:
abandon thought
and let the dream
descend...
What raging fire
shall flood the soul?
which rich desire
unlocks its door?
What sweet seduction
lies before
us...?
Past the point
of no return,
the final threshold -
what warm,
unspoken secrets
will we learn?
Beyond the point
of no return...
CHRISTINE
You have brought me
to that moment
where words run dry,
to that moment
where speech
disappears
into silence,
silence...
I have come here,
hardly knowing
the reason why...
In my mind,
I've already
imagined our
bodies entwining,
defenceless and silent -
and now I am
here with you:
no second thoughts,
I've decided,
decided...
Past the point
of no return -
no going back now:
our passion-play
has now, at last
begun...
Past all thought
of right or wrong -
one final question:
how long should we
two wait, before
we're one...?
When will the blood
begin to race,
the sleeping bud
burst into bloom?
When will the flames,
at last consume
us...?
BOTH
Past the point
of no return,
the final threshold -
the bridge
is crossed, so stand
and watch it burn...
We've passed the point
of no return...
PHANTOM
Say you'll share with
me one
love, one lifetime...
Lead me, save me
from my solitude...
Say you want me
with you,
here beside you...
Anywhere you go
let me go too -
Christine,
that's all I ask of...
CARLOTTA
(spoken)
What is it? What has happened? Ubaldo!
ANDR?
(spoken)
Oh, my God...my God...
FIRMIN
(spoken)
We're ruined, Andr? - ruined!
GIRY
(spoken)
Monsieur le Vicomte! Come with me!
CARLOTTA
(spoken)
Oh my darling, my darling...who has
done this...?
You! Why did you let this happen?
GIRY
(spoken)
Monsieur le Vicomte, I know where they
are.
RAOUL
(spoken)
But can I trust you?
GIRY
(spoken)
You must. But remember: your hand at
the level of your eyes!
RAOUL
(spoken)
But why...?
GIRY
(spoken)
Why? The Punjab lasso, monsieur. First
Buquet. Now Piangi.
(spoken)
Like this, monsieur. I'll come with you.
GIRY
(spoken)
No, Meg! No, you stay here!
Come with me, monsieur. Hurry, or we
Bring out the old, bring in the new
A midnight wish to share with you
Your lips are warm, my head is light
Were we alive before tonight?
I don't need a crowded ballroom
Everything I want is here
If you're with me, next year will be
The perfect year
No need to hear the music play
Our eyes say all there is to say
The clock has struck
The die is cast, let's take a chance
Forget the past
I don't need a crowded ballroom
Everything I want is here
If you're with me, next year will be
The perfect year
I don't need a crowded ballroom
Everything I want is here
If you're with me, next year will be
The perfect year
It's New Year's Eve, and hopes are high
Dance one year in, kiss one good-bye
Another chance, another start
So many dreams to tease the heart
We don't need a crowded ballroom
Everything we want is here
And face to face, we will embrace
The perfect year
We don't need a crowded ballroom
Everything we want is here
And face to face, w will embrace
I have a gumbie cat in mind, her name is Jennyanydots
Her coat is of the tabby kind with tiger stripes and leopard spots
All day she sits beneath the stairs or on the steps or on the mat
She sits and sits and sits and that's what makes a gumbie cat
That's what makes a gumbie cat
But...
When the day's hustle and bustle is done
Then the gumbie cat's work is but hardly begun
And when all the family's in bed and asleep
She tucks up her skirts to the basement to creep
She is deeply concerned with the ways of the mice
Their behavior's not good and their manners not nice
So when she has got them lined up on the matting
She teaches them music, crocheting and tatting
I have a gumbie cat in mind, her name is Jennyanydots
The curtain cord she likes to wind and tie it into sailor knots
She sits upon the windowsill or anything that's smooth and flat
She sits and sits and sits and that's what makes a gumbie cat
That's what makes a gumbie cat
But...
When the day's hustle and bustle is done
Then the gumbie cat's work is but hardly begun
She thinks that the cockroaches need employment
To prevent them from idle and wanton destroyment
So she's formed from that lot of disorderly louts
A troop of well disciplined helpful boy scouts
With a purpose in life and a good deed to do
And she's even created a beetles tattoo!
For she's a jolly good fellow!
The naming of cats is a difficult matter
It isn't just one of your holiday games
You may think at first I'm mad as a hatter
When I tell you a cat must have three different names
First of all, there's the name that the family use daily
Such as Peter, Augustus, Alonzo or James
Such as Victor or Jonathan, George or Bill Bailey
All of them are sensible, everyday names
There are fancier names, if you think they sound sweeter
Some for the gentlemen, some for the dames
Such as Plato, Admetas, Electra, Demeter
But all of them sensible everyday names
But I tell you a cat needs a name that's particular
A name that's peculiar and more dignified
Else how can he keep up his tail perpendicular?
Or spread out his whiskers or cherish his pride?
Of names of this kind, I can give you a quorum
Such as Munkustrap, Quaxo or Coricopat
Such as Bombalurina, or else Jellylorum
Names that never belong to more than one cat
But above and beyond there's still one name left over
And that is the name that you will never guess
The name that no human research can discover
But the cat himself knows and will never confess
When you notice a cat in profound meditation
The reason, I tell you, is always the same
His mind is engaged in rapt contemplation
Of the thought, of the thought, of the thought of his name
His ineffable, effable, effanineffable
Deep and inscrutable singular name
The moments of happiness
We had the experience but missed the meaning
And approach to the meaning restores the experience
In a different form beyond any meaning
We can assign to happiness
The past experience revived in the meaning
Is not the experience of one life only
But of many generations
Not forgetting something that is probably quite ineffable
Moonlight turn your face to the moonlight
Let your memory lead you open up, enter in
If you find there the meaning of what happiness is
Little Lotte, let her mind wander? You remember that, too
Little Lotte thought, am I fonder of dolls or of goblins, of shoes?
Or of riddles, of frock? Those picnics in the attic, or of chocolates?
Father playing the violin as we read to each other dark stories of the north
"No what I love best", Lotte said, "Is when I'm asleep in my bed
And the Angel of Music sings songs in my head?
The Angel of Music sings song in my head?"
Insolent boy! This slave of fashion basking in your glory!
Ignorant fool! This brave young suitor, sharing in my triumph!
Angel! I hear you! Speak, I listen, stay by my side, guide me!
Angel, my soul was weak, forgive me, enter at last, master!
Flattering child, you shall know me, see why in shadow I hide!
Look at your face in the mirror, I am there, inside!
Angel of Music! Guide and guardian! Grant to me your glory!
Angel of Music! Hide no longer! Come to me, strange angel
I am your angel, come to me Angel of Music
Whose is that voice? Who is that in there?
I am your Angel of Music come to me Angel of Music
Jellicle cats come out tonight
Jellicle cats come one, come all
The jellicle moon is shining bright
Jellicles come to the jellicle ball
Jellicle cats come out tonight
Jellicles come to the jellicle ball
Jellicle cats come out tonight
Jellicle cats come one, come all
The jellicle moon is shining bright
Jellicles come to the jellicle ball
Jellicle cats come out tonight
Jellicle cats come one, come all
The jellicle moon is shining bright
Jellicles come to the jellicle ball
Jellicle cats meet once a year
At the jellicle ball where we all rejoice
And the jellicle leader will soon appear
And make what is known as the jellicle choice
That's when Old Deuteronomy just before dawn
Through a silence you feel you could cut with a knife
Announces the cat who can now be reborn
And come back to different jellicle life
Because waiting up there is the heaviside layer
With wonders one jellicle only will see
Jellicles ask because jellicles dare
Christ, You know I love You
Did You see I waved?
I believe in You and God
So tell me that I'm saved
Christ, You know I love You
Did You see I waved?
I believe in You and God
So tell me that I'm saved
Jesus, I am with You
Touch me, touch me, Jesus
Jesus, I am on Your side
Kiss me, kiss me, Jesus
Christ, what more do You need to convince You
That You've made it and You're easily as strong
As the filth from Rome who raped our country
And who've terrorized our people for so long?
Christ, You know I love You
Did You see I waved?
I believe in You and God
So tell me that I'm saved
Christ, You know I love You
Did You see I waved?
I believe in You and God
So tell me that I'm saved
Jesus, I am with You
Touch me, touch me, Jesus
Jesus, I am on Your side
Kiss me, kiss me, Jesus
There must be over fifty thousand
Screaming love and more for You
Everyone of fifty thousand
Would do whatever You ask him to
Keep them yelling their devotion
But add a touch of hate at Rome
You will rise to a greater power
We will win ourselves, come home
You'll get the power and the glory
For ever and ever and ever
You got the power and the glory
For ever and ever and ever
You'll get the power and the glory
For ever and ever and ever
For ever and ever and ever
For ever and ever and ever
You'll get the power and the glory
For ever and ever and ever
Neither you, Simon, nor the fifty thousand
Nor the Romans, nor the Jews
Nor Judas, nor the twelve
Nor the priests, nor the scribes
Nor doomed Jerusalem itself
Understand what power is
Understand what glory is
Understand at all
Understand at all
If you knew all that I knew
My poor Jerusalem
You'd see the truth
But you close your eyes
But you close your eyes
While you live
Your troubles are many
Poor Jerusalem
To conquer death
You only have to die
Thursday night. The Last Supper.]
(Apostles)
Look at all my trials and tribulations
Sinking in a gentle pool of wine
Don't disturb me now I can see the answers
Till this evening is this morning life is fine
Always hoped that I'd be an apostle
Knew that I would make it if I tried
Then when we retire we can write the gospels
So they'll still talk about us when we've died
(Jesus)
The end . . .
Is just a little harder when brought about by friends
For all you care this wine could be my blood
For all you care this bread could be my body
The end!
This is my blood you drink
This is my body you eat
If you would remember me when you eat and drink . . .
I must be mad thinking I'll be remembered - yes
I must be out of my head!
Look at your blank faces! My name will mean nothing
Ten minutes after I'm dead!
One of you denies me
One of you betrays me
(Apostles)
Not I! Who would? Impossible!
(Jesus)
Peter will deny me in just a few hours
Three times will deny me - and that's not all I see
One of you here dining, one of my twelve chosen
Will leave to betray me -
(Judas) Cut out the dramatics! You know very well who -
(Jesus) Why don't you go do it?
(Judas) You want me to do it!
(Jesus) Hurry they are waiting
(Judas) If you knew why I do it . . .
(Jesus) I don't care why you do it!
(Judas) To think I admired you
For now I despise you
(Jesus) You liar - you Judas
(Judas) You wanted me to do it!
What if I just stayed here
And ruined your ambition?
Christ you deserve it!
(Jesus)
Hurry you fool, hurry and go,
Save me your speeches
I don't want to know - Go! Go!
(Apostles)
Look at all my trials and tribulations
Sinking in a gentle pool of wine
What's that in the bread it's gone to my head
Till this morning is this evening life is fine
Always hoped that I'd be an apostle
Knew that I would make it if I tried
Then when we retire we can write the gospels
So they'll all talk about us when we've died
(Judas)
You sad pathetic man - see where you've brought us to
Our ideals die around us and all because of you
But the saddest cut of all -
Someone has to turn you in
Like a common criminal, like a wounded animal
A jaded mandarin
A jaded mandarin
Like a jaded, faded, faded, jaded, jaded mandarin
(Jesus)
Get out! They're waiting! Get out! They're waiting!
Oh! They're waiting for you!
(Judas)
Everytime I look at you I don't understand
Why you let the things you did get so out of hand
You'd have managed better if you'd had it planned -
Ah --- ah
(Apostles)
Look at all my trials and tribulations
Sinking in a gentle pool of wine
What's that in the bread it's gone to my head
Till this evening is this morning life is fine
Always hoped that I'd be an apostle
Knew that I would make it if I tried (If I tried)
Then when we retire we can write the gospels
So they'll still talk about us when we've died
(Jesus)
Will no-one stay awake with me?
Peter? John? James?
Will none of you wait with me?
In June of forty-three there was a military coup
Behind it was a gang called the G.O.U.
Who did not feel the need to be elected
They had themselves a party at the point of a gun
They were slightly to the right of Atilla the Hun
A bomb or two and very few objected
Yeah, just one shell and governments fall like flies, kapow, die
They stumble and fall, bye bye
Backs to the wall, aim high
We're having a ball
The tank and bullet rule as democracy dies
The lady's got potential, she was setting her sights
On making it in movies with her name in lights
The greatest social climber since Cinderella
OK, she couldn't act but she had the right friends
And we all know a career depends
On knowing the right fella to be stellar
Yeah, just one shell and governments lose their nerve, kapow, die
They stumble and fall, bye bye
Backs to the wall, aim high
We're having a ball
That's how we get the government we deserve
Now the man behind the President calling the shots
Involved so discreetly in a lot of their plots
Was Colonel Juan Peron, would be dictator
He began in the army out in Italy so
Saw Mussolini's rise from the very front row
I reckon he'd do likewise sooner or later
Yeah, just one blast and the tear gas falls like rain, kapow, die
They haven't a chance, bye bye
The terrorists advance
But one guy doesn't dirty his hands
Peron was biding time out in the slow lane
Yeah, suddenly an earthquake hit the town of San Juan, kapow, die
They stumble and fall, bye bye
Keep away from the wall
But one guy was having a ball
The tragedy, a golden chance for Peron
He organized a concert with incredible flair
In aid of all the victims, such a grand affair
Politicians, actors, stars of every flavor
It was January twenty-second, 1944
A night to remember, yeah, that's for sure
For that's the night that Peron first met Eva
Up up up past the Russell Hotel
Up up up up to the heaviside layer
Up up up past the Russell Hotel
Up up up up to the heaviside layer
Up up up past the Russell Hotel
Up up up up to the heaviside layer
Up up up past the Russell Hotel
Up up up up to the heaviside layer
Up up up past the jellicle moon
Up up up up to the heaviside layer
Up up up past the jellicle moon
Up up up up to the heaviside layer
The mystical divinity of unashamed felinity
Round the cathedral rang 'Vivat'
Jellicle cats come out tonight
Jellicle cats come one, come all
The jellicle moon is shining bright
Jellicles come to the jellicle ball
Jellicle cats are black and white
Jellicle cats are rather small
Jellicle cats are merry and bright
And pleasant to hear when we caterwaul
Jellicle cats have cheerful faces
Jellicle cats have bright black eyes
We like to practice our airs and graces
And wait for the jellicle moon to rise
Jellicle cats develop slowly
Jellicle cats are not too big
Jellicle cats are roly poly
We know how to dance a gavotte and a jig
Until the jellicle moon appears
We make our toilette and take our repose
Jellicles wash behind their ears
Jellicles dry between their toes
Jellicle cats are black and white
Jellicle cats are of moderate size
Jellicles jump like a jumping jack
Jellicle cats have moonlit eyes
We're quiet enough in the morning hours
We're quiet enough in the afternoon
Reserving our terpsichorean powers
To dance by the light of the jellicle moon
Jellicle cats are black and white
Jellicle cats (as we said) are small
If it happens to be a stormy night
We will practice a caper or two in the hall
If it happens the sun is shining bright
You would say we had nothing to do at all
We are resting and saving ourselves to be right
For the jellicle moon and the jellicle ball
Jellicle cats come out tonight
Jellicle cats come one, come all
The jellicle moon is shining bright
You must be mistaken! It couldn't have been! You couldn't have seen him yesterday! He's doing some deal up in Baltimore now... I hate it, when he's away!
You must be mistaken, I'm sure that you are! There's more than one car with stickers on. And lots of young guys wear courdrary pants. And I'd know if he hadn't gone!
Ref.: Take that look off yor face! (Take that look off yor face!) I can see through your smile! (I can see through your smile!) You would love to be right, I bet, you didn't sleep good last night, couldn't wait to bring all of these bad news to my door. Well, I've got news for you: I knew before.
I'f I'm not mistaken, it started last year. I'm not very clear how it began... I noticed a change, but I just closed my eyes as only a woman can.
The heart is slow to learn
the heart is slow to learn
these feelings that i feel
are foolish but their real
i'm wise enough to see this love will never be
i'd try to let us know theres still no letting go
I know it's mad and you won't return
but still as i have said
the heart is slow to learn
I'll never love as i have loved you
why is love crule i wish i knew
say whatyou willit does'nt matter
untill i die there's only you
untill i die there's only you
The heart is slow to learn
the heart is slow to learn
you'd think there would be a way
to shut out yesterday
perhaps if i just thought
of all the times we fought
i'd try to let us know theres still no letting go
I know it's mad and you won't return
but then as i have said the heat is slow to learn
I'll never love as i have loved you
why is love crule i wish i knew
say what you will it does'nt matter
untill i die theres only you
untill i die theres only you

I want to be the first man you remember
I want to be the last man you forget
I want to be the one you'll always turn to
I want to be the one you won't regret
May I be the first to say you look delightful?
May I be the first to dance you 'round the floor?
The very first to see your face by moonlight?
The very first to walk you to your door?
Well young man, I'd be delighted
There is nothing I would rather do
What could be a sweeter memory
Than sharing my first dance with you?
I want to be the first man you remember
-The very first to sweep me off my feet
I want to be the one you'll always turn to
-The first to make my young heart miss a beat
Seems the stars are far below us
The moon has never felt this close before
(Or the sun to beam forever)?
And may it lead to many more
I want to be the first man you remember
-The very first to sweep me off my feet
I want to be the one you'll always turn to
The first to make your young heart miss a beat
Jesus)
God forgive them
They don't know what they're doing
Who is my mother?
Where is my mother?
My God
My God
Why have you forgotten me?
I'm thirsty
I'm thirsty
Oh God I'm thirsty
It is finished
Father
Into your hands
Narrator
So back in Canaan the future looked rough
Jacob's family were finding it tough
Brothers
For the famine has caught us unprepared
We are thin
We are ill
We are getting scared
It's enough to make anyone weep
We are down to our very last sheep
Reuben
We will starve if we hang around here
Zebulon
But in Egypt there's food going spare
Asher
They've got corn
They've got meat
They've got fruit and drinks
And if we have the time
We could see the Sphinx
Narrator
So they finally decided to go
Off to Egypt to see brother Jo
So they all lay before Joseph's feet
Brothers
Mighty prince, give us something to eat
Narrator
Joseph found it a strain
Not to laugh because
Not a brother among them
Knew who he was
Joseph
I shall now take them all for a ride
Phantom: Have you ever yearned to go
Past the world you think you know
Been enthralled to the call
To the beauty underneath
Have you let it draw you in
Past the place where dreams begin
Felt the full breathless pull
Of the beauty underneath
When the dark unfolds its wings
Do you sense the strangest things
Things no one would ever guess
Things mere words cannot express
Gustave: Yes.
Phantom: Do you find yourself beguiled
By the dangerous and wild
Do you feed on the need for the beauty underneath
Have you felt your senses surge
And surrender to the urge
And been hooked as you looked
At the beauty underneath
When you star behind the night
Can you glimpse its primal might
Might you hunger to possess
Hunger that you can't repress
Gustave: Yes
It seems so beautiful
So strange yet beautiful
Everything's just as you said
Phantom: And he's so beautiful
Perhaps too beautiful
What I suspect cannot be
And yet somehow we both see
The very same way
Gustave: Is there music in your head
Have you followed where it led?
And be graced with the taste of the beauty underneath
Does it fill your every sense
Is it terribly intense
Tell me you need it too
Need the beauty underneath
Phantom and Gustave: When he lifts his voice and sings,
Don't you feel amazing things?
Things you know you can't confess
Things you thirst for, nonetheless
Gustave: It soars so beautiful
Phantom: Can it be?
Gustave: Almost too beautiful.
Phantom and Gustave: Do you see what I see?
Gustave: Heavenly.
Phantom: To him it's beautiful
My world is beautiful
Gustave: How can this be what it seems?
Phantom and Gustave: All of my most secret dreams
Somehow set free
Phantom: You can feel it
Gustave: Yes.
Phatnom: Come closer
Gustave: Yes.
Phantom: You've no fear of the beauty underneath.
You can face it
Gustave: Yes.
Phantom: You can take it
Gustave: Yes!
Phantom: You see through
Phantom and Gustave: To the beauty underneath
Phantom: To the splendor
Gustave: The splendor
Phantom: And the glory
Gustave: And the glory
Phatnom: To the truth of the beauty underneath
Gustave: The beauty underneath
Phantom: You accept it
Gustave: Yes!
Phantom: You embrace it.
Gustave: Yes.
Phantom: Let me show you the beauty underneath
To the splendor
Gustave: To the splendor
Phantom: And the glory
Gustave: And the glory
Phantom: To the truth of the beauty underneath
Gustave: Beauty underneath
Phantom: You accept it
Gustave: Yes.
Phantom: You embrace it
Gustave: Yes.
Phantom: Let me show you the beauty under-
Every time I look at You I don't understand
Why You let the things You did get so out of hand?
You?d have managed better if You?d had it planned
Why?d You choose such a backward time and such a strange land?
If You?d come today You could have reached a whole nation
Israel in 4 B.C. had no mass communication
Don?t You get me wrong

Tell me, what You think about Your friends at the top?
Who?d You think besides Yourself?s the pick of the crop?
Buddha was he where it?s at, is he where You are?
Could Mahomet move a mountain or was that just PR?
Did You mean to die like that? Was that a mistake or
Did You know You messy death would be a record breaker?

Don?t You get me wrong, now

Sure I came out here to make my name
Wanted my pool, my dose of fame
Wanted my parking space at Warner's
But after a year, a one room hell
A murphy bed, a rancid smell
Wallpaper peeling at the corners
Sunset Boulevard, twisting boulevard
Secretive and rich, a little scary
Sunset Boulevard, tempting boulevard
Waiting there to swallow the unwary
Dreams are not enough to win a war
Out here they're always keeping score
Beneath the tan the battle rages
Smile a rented smile, fill someone's glass
Kiss someone's wife, kiss someone's ass
We do whatever pays the wages
Sunset Boulevard, headline boulevard
Getting here is only the beginning
Sunset Boulevard, jackpot boulevard
Once you've won you have to go on winning
You think I've sold out?
Dead right I've sold out!
I just keep waiting for the right offer
Comfortable quarters, regular rations
24-hour Five Star room service
And if I'm honest, I like the lady
I can't help being touched by her folly
I'm treading water, taking the money
Watching her sun set... Well, I'm a writer!
L.A.'s changed a lot over the years
Since those brave gold rush pioneers
Came in their creaky covered wagons
Far as they could go end of the line
Their dreams were yours, their dreams were mine
But in those dreams were hidden dragons
Sunset Boulevard, frenzied boulevard
Swamped with every kind of false emotion
Sunset Boulevard, brutal boulevard
Just like you, we'll wind up in the ocean
She was sinking fast, I threw a rope
Now I have suits and she has hope
It seemed an elegant solution
One day this must end, it isn't real
Still I'll enjoy a hearty meal
Before tomorrrow's execution
Sunset Boulevard, ruthless boulevard
Destination for the stony-hearted
Sunset Boulevard, lethal boulevard
Everyone's forgotten how they started
I dreamed I met a Galilean
A most amazing man
He had that look
You very rarely find
The haunting hunted kind
I asked him
To say what had happened
How it all began
I asked again
He never said a word
As if he hadn't heard
And next the room was full
Of wild and angry men
They seemed to hate this man
They fell on him and then disappeared
Then I saw thousands of millions
Crying for this man
And then I heard them mentioning my name
OFFICERS
One has no rules
Is not precise
One rarely acts
The same way twice
One spurns no device
Practicing the art of the possible
One always picks
The easy fight
One praises fools
One smothers light
one shifts left to right
It's part of the art of the possible
(While the officers continue their game of political musical
chairs, EVA appears, script in hand, at a microphone.)
EVA (on the air)
I'm only a radio star with just one weekly show
But speaking as one of the people I want you to know
We are tired of the decline of
Argentina with no sign of
A government able to give us the things we deserve
OFFICERS
One always claims
Mistakes were planned
When risk is slight
One takes one's stand
With much sleight of hand
Politics--the art of the possible
One has no rules
Is not precise
One rarely acts
The same way twice
One spurns no device
Politics--the art of the possible
VOICES
There he is
They're all asleep, the fools
Judas, must you betray me
With a kiss
What's the buzz?
Tell me what's happening
Hang on, Lord
We're gonna fight for you
Put away your sword
Don't you know that it's all over
It was nice but now it's gone
Why are you obsessed with fighting?
Stick to fishing from now on
Tell me Christ how You feel tonight
Do You plan to put up a fight?
Do You feel that You've had the breaks?
What would You say were Your big mistakes?
Do You think that You may retire?
Did You think You would get much higher?
How do You view Your coming trial?
Have Your men proved all worthwhile?
Come with us to see Caiaphas
You'll just love the high priest's house
You'll just love seeing Caiaphas
You'll just die in the high priest's house
Come on God this is not like You
Let us know what You're gonna do
You know what Your supporters feel
You'll escape in the final reel
Tell me Christ how You feel tonight
Do You plan to put up a fight?
Do You feel that You've had the breaks?
What would You say were Your big mistakes?
Come with us to see Caiaphas
You just love the high priest's house
You just love seeing Caiaphas
You'll just die in the high priest's house
Now we have him, now we got him
Now we have him, now we got him
Jesus You must realize
The serious charges facing You
You say You're the son of God
In all Your handouts, well, is it true?
That's what you say
You say that I am
Now that we have the gentleman
What more evidence do we need?
Judas, thank you for the victim
Stay a while and you'll see him bleed
Now we have him, now we got him
You've heard of several kinds of cat
And my opinion now is that
You should need no interpreter to understand our character
You've learned enough to take the view
That cats are very much like you
You've seen us both at work and games
And learnt about our proper names
Our habits and habitat
But how would you ad-dress a cat
So first, your memory I'll jog
And say: A cat is not a dog
So first, your memory I'll jog
And say: A cat is not a dog
With cats, some say, one rule is true
Don't speak 'til you are spoken to
Myself I do not hold with that
I say, you should ad-dress a cat
But always bear in mind that he resents familiarity
You bow, and taking off your hat, ad-dress him in this form "O Cat!"
Before a cat will condescend
To treat you as a trusted friend
Some little token of esteem is needed, like a dish of cream
And you might now and then supply
Some caviar or Straussburg pie
Some potted grouse or salmon paste
He's sure to have his personal taste
And so in time you reach your aim
And call him by his name
A cat's entitled to expect
These evidences of respect
So this is this and that is that
And there's how you ad-dress a cat
A cat's entitled to expect these evidences of respect
So this is this and that is that
Thus all fairy stories end only an actress would pretend
Affairs of state are her latest play, eight shows a week, two matinees
My how the worm begins to turn, when will the chorus girl ever learn?
My how the worm begins to turn, when will the chorus girl ever learn?
The chorus girl hasn't learned the lines you'd like to hear
She won't go scrambling over the backs of the poor to be accepted
By making donations just large enough to the correct charity
She won't be president of your wonderful societies of philanthropy
Even if you asked her to be as you should have asked her to be
The actress hasn't learned the lines you'd like to hear
She won't join your clubs, she won't dance in your halls
She won't help the hungry once a month at your tombolas
She'll simply take control as you disappear
Forgive my intrusion but fine as those sentiments sound
Little has changed for us peasants down here on the ground
I hate to sound childish, ungrateful, I don't like to moan
But do you now represent anyone's cause but your own?
FLECK:
That's the place that you ruined, you fool!
MADAME GIRY:
(speaking)
What do you mean?
FLECK:
That's the world you destroyed with your greed!
MADAME GIRY:
(speaking)
It wasn't my fault! I couldn't have known!
FLECK:
Don't you remember what happened back then?
When we, even we, dared to walk among men?!
Don't write a letter
when you want to leave
Don't call me at 3 a.m.
from a friend's appartment
I'd like to choose how I hear the news
Take me to a park that's covered with trees
Tell me on a Sunday please
Let me down easy, no big song and dance
no long faces, no long looks
no deep conversation
I know how I want you to say goodbye
Take me to a zoo that's got chimpanzees
Tell me on a Sunday please
Don't want to know who's to blame
It won't help knowing
Don't want to fight day and night
bad enough you're going
Don't leave in silence
with no word at all
Don't get drunk and slam the door
That's no way to end this
I know how I want you to say goodbye
Find a circus ring with a flying trapeze
Pharaoh said
Well, stone the crows
This Joseph is a clever kid
Who'd have thought that 14 cows
Could mean the things
He said, they did
Joseph, you must help me further
I have got a job for you
You will help my through this crisis
You shall be my number two
Pharaoh told his guards
To fetch a chisel from the local store
Whereupon he ordered them
To cut the chains that Joseph wore
Joseph got a royal pardon
And a host of splendid things
A chariot of gold, a float
A medal, and some signet rings
Joseph, Pharaoh's number two
(Joseph, Pharaoh's number two)
Joseph, Egypt looks to you
(Joseph, Egypt looks to you)
Joseph, Pharaoh's number two
(Joseph, Pharaoh's number two)
Joseph, Egypt looks to you
(Joseph, Egypt looks to you)
Joseph
Seven summers on the trot
Went perfect just as Joseph said
Joseph saw that food was gathered
Ready for the years ahead
Seven years of famine followed
Egypt did not mind a bit
The recorded rationing
In history was a hit
Joseph, how can we ever say
All that we want to, about you?
We're so glad that you came our way
We would have perished without you
Joseph, we are the perfect team
Old buddies that's you and me
I was wise to have chosen you
You would be wise to agree
Joseph, how can we ever say
All that we want to, about you?
We're so glad that you came our way
We would have perished without you
We were in a jam
Would have baffled Abraham
But now we're a partnership
It's just a piece of cake
Greatest man since Noah
Only goes to show ya
Anyone from anywhere can make it
If they get a lucky break
This could be a happy ending
Perfect place to stop the show
Joseph after all has got
About as far as he could go
But I'm sure that Jacob
And his other sons have crossed your mind
How the famine hit the family
Starlight Express
Starlight Express!
Only you have the power within you.
Just believe in yourself
The sea will part before you
Stop the rain, turn the tide.
If only you use the power within you
Needn't beg the world
To turn around and help you
If you draw on what you have within you
Somewhere deep inside.
Starlight Express, Starlight Express
Are you real
yes or no?
Starlight Express, answer me yes
I don't want you to go
Rusty you're blind, look in your mind
I'm there - Nothing's new
The Starlight Express is no more no less
Than you Rusty. I am you.
I'm you and only you
I am the Starlight
*Have the power within you*
I can achieve
*Just believe in yourself*
Anything!
*The sea will part before you
Stop the rain and turn the tide*
All the things I didn't believe.
*If only you*
I am the Starlight
I can see it throught.
Needn't beg the world to turn around and help you
If you draw on what is deep inside.
When your good nights have been said
And you are lying in bed
With the covers pulled up tight
And though you count every sheep
You get the feeling that sleep
Is going to stay away tonight.
That's when you hear it coming
That is when you hear the humming of the
Midnight train, here again
Can’t explain that midnight train, that midnight train
Starlight Express, you must confess
Are you real, yes or no?
Starlight Express, answer me yes.
I don't want you to go.
Want you to take me away
But bring me home before day-light
And in the time between
Take me to everywhere
But don't abandon me there
Just want to say I-ve been.
I believe in you completely
Though I may be dreaming sweetly of the
I can hear the train, here again
Can’t explain that midnight train, that midnight train
Starlight Express, you must confess
Are you real, yes or no?
Starlight Express, answer me yes.
I don't want you to go.
Starlight Express, answer me yes.
I don't want you to go.
Starlight Express, you must confess,
Are you real, yes or no?
Starlight Express, answer me yes.
PHARAOH:
Well I was wandering along by the banks of the river when seven fat cows
came out of the Nile
And right behind them fine healthy animals came seven other cows,
skinny and vile
Well the thin cows ate the fat cows which I thought would do them good
But it didn't make them fatter like I thought a monster supper should
Because the thin ones were as thin as they had ever ever been
This dream has got me baffled, hey Joseph, tell me what it means
C'mon you know that kings ain't stupid
But I don't have a clue
So don't be cruel Joseph
You gotta help me now I beg of you
I was standing doing nothing in a field out of town -- I saw seven
beautiful ears of corn
They were ripe they were golden but you guessed it right
behind them were seven other ears -- tattered and torn
Then the bad corn ate the good corn man they came up right behind
yes they did
And Joseph here's the punchline it's really gonna blow your mind --
flip your lid
Because the bad corn was as bad as it had ever ever been
This dream has got me all shook up, treat me nice and tell me what it means
Skimbleshanks the Railway cat the cat of the railway train
There's a whisper down the line at eleven thirty - nine
When the night mail's ready to depart
Saying, "Skimble, where is Skimble has he gone to hunt the thimble
We must find him or the train can't start"
All the guards and all the porters and the stationmaster's daughters
Would be searching high and low
Saying "Skimble where is Skimble for unless he's very nimble
Then the night mail just can't go."
At eleven forty-two with the signal overdue
And the passengers all frantic to a man
That's when I would appear and I'd saunter to the rear
I'd been busy in the luggage van!
Then he gave one flash of his glass - green eyes
And the signal went "all clear"
They'd be off at last to the northern part of the northern hemisphere!
Skimbleshanks, the Railway cat the cat of the railway train
You might say that by and large it was me who was in charge
Of the Sleeping Car Express
From the driver and guards to the bagmen playing cards
I would supervise them all more or less
Down the corridor he paces and examines all the faces
Of the travellers in the first and the third
He established control by a regular patrol
And he'd know at once if anything occured.
He would you watch you without winking and he saw what you were thinking
And it's certain that he didn't approve
Of hilarity and riot so that folk were very quiet
When Skimble was about and on the move
You could play no pranks with Skimbleshanks
He's a cat that couldn't be ignored
So nothing went wrong on the Northern Mail
When Skimbleshanks was aboard
It was very pleasant when they'd found their little den
With their name written up on the door
And the berth was very neat with a newly folded sheet on
And not a speck of dust on the floor
There was every sort of light you could make it dark and bright
And a button you could turn to make a breez
And a funny little basin you're supposed to wash your face in
And a crank to shut the window should you sneeze
Then the guard looked in politely and would ask you very brightly
Do you like your morning tea weak or strong
But I was just behind him and was ready to remind him
For Skimble won't let anything go wrong
When the crept into their cozy berth and pulled the counterpane
They ought to reflect that it was very nice
To know that they wouldn't be bothered by mice
They can leave all that to the railway cat
The cat of the railway train
Skimbleshanks the railway cat the cat of the railway train
In the watches of the night I was always fresh and bright
Every now and then I'd have a cup of tea
With perhaps a drop of scotch while I was busy keeping up the watch
Only stopping here and there to catch a flea
They were fast asleep at Crew
And so they never knew that I was walking up and down the station
They were sleeping all the while I was busy at Carlisle
Where I met the stationmaster with elation
They might see me at Dumfries if I summoned the police
If there was anything they ought to know about
When they got to Gallowgat there they did not have to wait
For Skimbleshanks will help them to get out
And he gives you a wave of his long brown tail
Which says "I'll see you again"
You'll meet without fail on the Midnight Mail
The cat of the railway train
You'll meet with outfail on the Midnight Mail
Seven years of bumper crops are on their way
Years of plenty endless wheat and tons of hay
Your farms will boom, there won't be room
To store the surplus food you grow
After that, the future doesn't look so bright
Egypt's luck will change completely over night
And famine's hand will stalk the land
With food, an all time low
Noble king, there is no doubt
What your dreams are all about
All these things you saw in your pajamas
Are a long range forecast for your farmers
And I'm sure it's crossed your mind
What it is you have to find
Find a man to lead you through the famine
With a flair for economic planning
But who this man could be, I just don't know
Who this man could be, I just don't know
Andrew Lloyd Webber
from _Aspects of Love_
Seeing is believing
And in my arms I see her
She's here, really here
Really mine now
She seems at home here
Seeing is believing
I dreamt that it would be her
At last life is full
Life is fine now
Whatever happens, one thing is certain
Each time I see a train go by
I'll think of us
The night, the sky, forever
Seeing is believing
My life is just beginning
I'm touched and my head won't stop spinning
>From winning her love
He's young, very young
But a feeling...
I feel I know him
Seeing is believing
And I like what I see
I like where I am
What I'm feeling
What are we doing?
Can you believe it?
A starving actress and a starstruck boy
Oh well, I might as well enjoy
The moment
She's warm, and she's wild
And appealing
I feel I know her
Seeing is believing
I never thought I'd be here
Is this really real
Or am I dreaming?
No way of knowing
Where this is leading
It's fun forgetting who we are
Who cares when now the world is far behind us?
Seeing is believing
My life is just beginning
We touched and my head won't stop spinning
[Children:]
Please, gentle Eva, will you bless a little child?
For I love you, tell Heaven I'm doing my best
I'm praying for you, even though you're already blessed
Please, mother Eva, will you look upon me as your own?
Make me special, be my angel
Be my everything wonderful perfect and true
And I'll try to be exactly like you
Please, holy Eva, will you feed a hungry child?
For I love you, tell Heaven I'm doing my best
I'm praying for you, even though you're already blessed
Please, mother Eva, will you feed a hungry child?

PERON
People of Europe! I send you the Rainbow of Argentina!
Spain has fallen to the charms of Evita
She can do what she likes--it doesn't matter much
She's the New World Madonna with the golden touch
She filled a bull-ring--forty-five thousand seater
But if you're prettier than General Franco
That's not hard
Franco's reign in Spain should see out the forties
So you've just acquired an ally who
Looks as secure in his job as you
More important, current political thought is
Your wife's a phenomenal asset
Your trump card
PERON and OFFICERS
Let's hear it for the Rainbow Tour
It's been an incredible success
We weren't quite sure, we had a few doubts
Would Evita win through?
PERON and OFFICERS
But the answer is yes!
EVA (in Spain)
There you are, I told you so
Makes no difference where we go
The whole world over--just the same
You should have heard them call our name
And who would underestimate the actress now?
PERON
I'm not underestimating you--just do the same thing in
Italy please
Now I don't like to spoil a wonderful story
But the news from Rome is not so good
She hasn't gone down like we thought she would
Italy's unconvinced by Argentine glory
They equate Peron with Mussolini
Can't think why
EVA (in Italy)
Did you here that?
They called me a whore!
They actually called me a whore!
AN ITALIAN ADMIRAL (CHE)
But Signora Peron--
It's an easy mistake
I'm still called an admiral
yet I gave up the sea long ago
CHE / OFFICERS
Things aren't all that bad she met with the Pope
She got a Papal decoration and a kindly word
So even if the crowds gave our lady the bird
The Argentine/Italy axis does have some hope
She still made a fabulous impact
Caught the eye
PERON and OFFICERS
Let's here it for the Rainbow Tour
It's been an incredible success
We weren't quite sure, we had a few doubts
Would Evita win through?
PERON and OFFICERS
But the answer is--
A qualified--
PERON and OFFICERS
Yes!
Eva started well, no question, in France
Shining like the sun through the post-war haze
A beautiful reminder of the carefree days
She nearly captured the French, she sure had the chance
But she suddenly seemed to lose interest
She looked tired
PERON and OFFICERS
Tired? Eva tired?
Face the facts, the Rainbow's starting to fade
I don't think she'll make it to England now
PERON
It wasn't on the schedule anyhow
You'd better get out the flags and fix a parade
Some kind of coming home triumph
Is required
PERON and OFFICERS
Let's here it for the Rainbow Tour
It's been an incredible success
We weren't quite sure, we had a few doubts
Would Evita win through?
And the answer is--
PERON and OFFICERS
And no
PERON and OFFICERS
And yes
And no
PERON and OFFICERS
And yes... and no
Let's here it for the Rainbow Tour
It's been an incredible success...
EVA (back from Europe)
Who the hell does the King of England think he is?
Tea at some tinpot castle of his--what kind of invitation
is that?
Argentina's First Lady deserves Buckingham Palace!
If England can do without me
Eva:
There again I've more to do than simply get the message through,
I haven't started!
Let's get this show on the road,
lets make it obvious Peron is of and rolling
Beauticians:
Eyes! Hair! Mouth! Figure!
Dress! Voice! Style! Movement!
Hands! Magic! Rings! Glamour!
Face! Diamonds! Excitement! Image!
Eva:
I came from the people,
they need to adore me,
so Christian Dior me,
from my head to my toes,
I need to be dazzling,
Iwant to be Rainbow High!
They must have excitement,
and so must I
Beauticians:
Eyes! Hair! Mouth! Figure!
Dress! Voice! Style! Image!
Eva:
I'm their product,
it's vital you sell me,
so Machiavell me,
make an Argentine Rose!
I need to be thrilling,
I want to be Rainbow High!
They need their escape, and so do I
Beauticians:
Eyes! Hair! Mouth! Figure!
Dress! Voice! Style! Movement!
Hands! Magic! Rings! Glamour!
Face! Diamonds! Excitement! Image!
Eva:
All my descamisados expect me to outshine the enemy,
I won't disappoint them.
I'm their saviour!
That's what they call me,
so Lauren Bacall me
Anything goes
To make me fantastic
I have to be Rainbow High!
In magical colours
You're not decorating a girl for a night on the town!
And I'm not a second rate Queen getting kicks with a crown!
Next stop
will be Europe!
The Rainbow's gonna tour
Dressed up, somewhere to go; we'll put on a show!
Look out
mighty Europe!
Because you oughta know whatcha gonna get in me:
just a little touch of,
just a little touch of
LEVI
Father, we've something to tell you, a story of our time
A tragic but inspiring tale of manhood in its prime
You know you had a dozen sons
Well now that's not quite true
But feel no sorrow, do not grieve, he would not want you to
There's one more angel in Heaven
There's one more star in the sky
Joseph, we'll never forget you
It's tough but we're gonna get by
There's one less place at our table
There's one more tear in my eye
But Joseph, the things that you stood for
Like truth and light never die
When I think of his last great battle
A lump comes to my throat
It takes a man who knows no fear
To wrastle with a goat
His blood-stained coat is tribute to
His final sacrifice
His body may be past its peak, but his soul's in paradise
JACOB
There's one less place at our table
There's one more tear in my eye
LEVI
But Joseph, the things that you stood for
Like truth and light never die

Carve his name with pride and courage

Fleck: Yes, there's nothing left, nothing but ghosts, but I knew you'd come back, Madame Giry.
Madame Giry: You, you're still here.
Fleck: Of course we're still here, the freaks, the monsters, the bizarre. Where else could we exist but here? And after the tragedy, after the master disappeared with the child, after the fire that consumed everything.
Madame Giry: His dream. Our dream.

See it smile
Beckoning and shimmering
All agleam

PHANTOM
(spoken)
So, it is to be war between us! If these
demands are not met, a disaster beyond
your imagination will occur!
Joseph was taken to Egypt in chains and sold
Where he was bought by a captain named Potiphar
Potiphar had very few cares
He was one of Egypt's millionaires
Having made a fortune
Buying shares in pyramids
Potiphar had made a huge pile
Owned a large percentage of the Nile
Meant that he could really
Live in style and he did
Joseph was an unimportant slave
Who found he liked his master
Consequently worked much harder
Even with devotion
Potiphar could see that Joseph
Was a cut above the average
Made him leader of his household
Maximum promotion
Potiphar was cool and so fine
But his wife would never toe the line
It's all there in chapter 39 of Genesis
She was beautiful but evil
Saw a lot of men against his will
He would have to tell her
That she still was his
Joseph's looks and handsome figure
Had attracted her attention
Every morning she would beckon
"Come and lie with me, love"
Joseph wanted to resist her till
One day she proved too eager
Joseph cried in vain
"Please stop, I don't believe in free love"
Potiphar was counting shekels
In his den below the bedroom
When he heard a mighty rumpus
Clattering above him
Suddenly he knew his riches
Couldn't buy him what he wanted
Gold would never make him happy
If she didn't love him
Letting out a mighty roar
Potiphar burst through the door
"Joseph, I'll see you rot in jail
The things you have done
Are beyond the pale"
Poor, poor Joseph locked up in a cell
Things ain't going well hey
NARRATOR:
Guess what? In his bed Pharaoh had an uneasy night
He had had a dream that pinned him to his sheets with fright
No-one knew the meaning of the dream
What to do? Whatever could it mean?
Then his butler said
BUTLER:
I know a bloke in jail
Who is hot on dreams, could explain old Pharaoh's tale
NARRATOR:
Pharaoh said fetch this Joseph man
I need him to help me if he can
CHORUS:
Poor poor Pharaoh, what'cha gonna do?
Dreams are haunting you, hey, what'cha gonna do?
NARRATOR:
Chained and bound, afraid, alone
Joseph stood before the throne
JOSEPH:
My service to Pharaoh has begun
(Narrator)
Nest day, far from home
The brothers planned the repulsive crime
(Brothers)
Let us grab him now
Do him in, while we've got the time
(Narrator)
This they did and made the most of it
Tore his coat and flung him in a pit
(Brothers)
Let us leave him here
All alone and he's bound to die
(Narrator)
Then some Ishmaelites
A hairy crew came riding by
In a flash the brothers changed their plan
(Brothers)
We need cash. Let's sell him if we can
(Narrator, Female Ensemble & Children)
Poor, poor Joseph, what'cha gonna do?
Things look bad for you, hey, what'cha gonna do?
Poor, poor Joseph, what'cha gonna do?
Things look bad for you, hey, what'cha gonna do?
(Brothers)
Could you use a slave
You hairy bunch of Ishmaelites
Young, strong, well-behaved
Going cheap, and he reads and writes
(Narrator)
In a trice the dirty deal was done
Silver coins for Jacob's favorite son
Then the Ishmaelites
Galloped off with the slave in tow
Off to Egypt were Joseph was not keen to go
It wouldn't be a picnic he could tell
(Joseph)
And I don't speak Egyptian very well
(Narrator)
Joseph's brothers tore
His precious multi-colored coat
Having ripped it up
They next attacked a passing goat
Soon the wretched creature was no more
They dipped his coat in blood and guts and gore
(Narrator, Ensemble & Children)
Oh now brothers, how low can you stoop?
You make a sordid group, hey, how low can you stoop?
Poor, poor Joseph, sold to be a slave
Pharaoh, he was a powerful man
With the ancient world in the palm of his hand
To all intents and purposes, he was Egypt with a capital E
Whatever he did he was showered with praise
If he cracked a joke then you chortled for days
No one had rights or a vote but the king
In fact you might say he was fairly right wing
When Pharaoh's around, then you get down on the ground
If you ever find yourself near Ramses, get down on your knees
A Pharaoh story, a Pharaoh story
Down at the other end of the scale
Joseph is still doing time in jail
For even though he is in with the guards
A lifetime in prison seems quite on the cards
But if my analysis of the position is right
At the end of the tunnel there's a glimmer of light
For all of a sudden indescribable things
Have shattered the sleep of both peasants and kings
Strange as it seems, there's been a run of crazy dreams
And a man who can interpret could go far, could become a star
Could be famous, could be a big success
I think I've seen you somewhere
I remember
You were with that man
They took away
I recognize your face
You've got the wrong man, lady
I don't know him
And I wasn't where
He was tonight
Never near the place
That's strange
For I am sure I saw you with him
You were right by his side
And yet you denied?
I tell you
I was never ever with him
But I saw you too
It looked just like you
I don't know him
Peter don't you know what you have said
You've gone and cut him dead
I had to do it
Don't you see?
Or else they'd go for me
It's what he told us you would do
[Che:] At the watering holes of the well-to-do
I detect a resistance to
[Aristocrats:] Precisely
[Che:] Our heroine's style
[Aristocrats:] We're glad you noticed
[Che:] The shooting sticks of the upper-class
[Aristocrats:] Give her an inch
[Che:] Aren't supporting a single ass
That would rise for the girl
[Aristocrats:] She'll take a mile
[Aristocrats:]
Such a shame she wandered into our enclosure
How unfortunate this person has forced us to be blunt
No we wouldn't mind seeing her at Harrod's
But behind the jewelry counter, not in front
[Che:] Could there be in our fighting corps
A lack of enthusiasm for
[Army:] Exactly
[Che:] Peron's latest flame
[Army:] You said it brother
[Che:]
Should you wish to cause great distress
In the tidiest officer's mess
Just mention her name
[Army:]
That isn't funny
Peron is a fool, breaking every taboo
Installing a girl in the army H.Q.
And she's an actress, the last straw
Her only good parts are between her thighs
She should stare at the ceiling, not reach for the skies
Or she could be his last whore
The evidence suggests
She has other interests
If it's her who's using him
He's exceptionally dim
Bitch! Dangerous Jade
[Aristocrats:]
We have allowed ourselves to slip
We have completely lost our grip
We have declined to an all-time low
Tarts have become the set to know
[Eva:]
I am only a radio star with just one weekly show
But speaking as one of the people I want you to know
We are tired of the decline of Argentina
With no sign of a government able to give us the things we deserve
[Army:]
It's no crime for officers to do as they please
As long as they're discreet and keep clear of disease
We ignore, we disregard
But once they allow a bit on the side
To move to the center where she's not qualified
We are forced to mark his card
She should get into her head
She should not get out of bed
She should know that she's not paid
To be loud but to be laid
Slut! Dangerous Jade
[Che:]
This has really been your year, Miss Duarte
Tell us where you go from here, Miss Duarte
Which are the roles that you yearn to play?
Whom did you sleep ... dine with yesterday?
[Eva:]
Acting is limiting, the line's not mine
That's no help to the Argentine
[Che:]
Can we assume then that you'll quit?
Is this because of your involvement with Colonel Peron?
[Heavies:]
Goodnight and thank you
[Army:]
She won't be kept happy by her nights on the tiles
She says it's his body, but she's after his files
So get back on to the street
She should get into her head
She should not get out of bed
She should know that she's not paid
To be loud but to be laid
The evidence suggests
She has other interests
If it's her who's using him
He's exceptionally dim
[Aristocrats:]
Things have reached a pretty pass
When someone pretty lower-class
Graceless and vulgar, uninspired
Ring out the old
Bring in the new
A midnight wish
To share with you
Your lips are warm
My head is light
Were we in love
Before tonight
I don't need a crowded ballroom
Everything I want is here
If you're with me
Next year will be the perfect year
No need to hear
The music play
Your eyes say all
There is to say
The stars can fade
And they can shine
Long as your face
Is next to mine
I don't need a crowded ballroom
Everything I need is here
If you're with me
Next year will be the perfect year
We don't need a crowded ballroom
Everything we need is here
If you're with me
Next year will be the perfect year
It's new year's eve
And hopes are high
Dance one year in
Kiss one goodbye
Another chance
Another start
So many dreams
To tease the heart
We don't need a crowded ballroom
Everything we need is here
And face to face
We will embrace the perfect year
We don't need a crowded ballroom
Everything we need is here
So face to face
We shall embrace the perfect year
This trophy from our saviors
From our saviors
From the enslaving force of Rome
The trumpets of Carthage resound
Hear Romans, now and tremble
Hark to our steps on the ground
Hear the drums
Only you have to power to move me
And together we'll make the whole
World move in sympathy
But i could see befor
Only you have the power to move me
Take me hold me mold me
Change me and improve me
It's not funny any more
There was I wondering why
Every days a peer into the distance
Now with you the light is shining through
You gave me life not just existance
Only you have the power to move me
And together we'll make the whole
World move in sympathy
Only you have the power to move me
There was I wondering why
Every days a peer into the distance
Now with you the light is shining through
You gave me life not just exsistance
Only you have the power to move me
And together we'll make the whole
World move in sympthy
Bright'in up the darkest sky
If only you use the power to move me
Take me hold me mould me
Change me and improve me
Look at me a woman, calm and in control
No silly girl whose head's always turning
Nobody would guess that deep inside my soul
A brand new flame is burning
Only he has the power to move me
And together we'd make the whole world move in sympathy
But I couldn't see before
That only he has the power to move me
Take me, hold me, mold me, change me and improve me
It's not funny anymore
Only he can make my burden light
Only he can make a wrong seem right
Only he can make the shadows bright
And make the darkness gleaming white
Him and me
Only he has the power to move me
All the nights I've wasted dreaming of the time
When I'd discover the one to guide me
Searching the horizon, didn't realize
That all the time he was beside me
Only he has the power to move me
And together we'd make the whole world move in sympathy
Hope and pray that I'm in time
Only he can stand and wait that long
Stand by me while I was going wrong
What if he couldn't wait?
Have I left it too late?
Only he has the power to move me
And together we'd make the whole world move in sympathy
Him and me we'd be sublime
And he still would never guess
That next time I'm gonna answer yes
Does he know if he comes back today,
This time I'm gonna make him stay?
Only he
Only he has the power every day, every hour
Father, we've something to tell you, a story of our time
A tragic but inspiring tale of manhood in its prime
You know you had a dozen sons, well, now that's not quite true
But feel no sorrow, do not grieve, he would not want you to
There's one more angel in Heaven
There's one more star in the sky
Joseph, we'll never forget you
It's tough but we're gonna get by
There's one less place at our table
There's one more tear in my eye
But Joseph, the things that you stood for
Like truth and light never die
When I think of his last great battle
A lump comes to my throat
It takes a man who knows no fear
To wrastle with a goat
His blood-stained coat is tribute to
His final sacrifice
His body may be past its peak
But his soul's in paradise
So long, little Joe
How do you [Incomprehensible]
[Incomprehensible]
There's one less place at our table
There's one more tear in my eye
But Joseph, the things that you stood for
Like truth and light never die
Carve his name with pride and courage
Let no tear be shed
If he had not laid down his life
Christine: Once upon another time
Our story had only begun
You chose to turn the page
And I made choices too
Once upon that other time
We did what we thought
Must be done
And now we have no choice
We do what we must do
We love
We live
We give what we can give
And take what little we deserve
Phantom: once upon another time
I knew how our story would end
And maybe I was wrong
But now the moment's gone
Were it still that other time
I'd make time itself
Somehow bend
But now I'm not that strong
And time keeps moving on
Christine and Phantom: We love
We live
We give what we can give
And take what little we deserve
We love
We live
We give what we can give
And take what little we deserve
(Che:)
Now Eva Peron had every disadvantage
You need if you're gonna succeed
No money, no cash
No father, no bright lights
There was nowhere she'd been
At the age of fifteen
As this tango singer found out
Agustin Magaldi
Who has the distinction of being the first
Man to be of use to Eva Duarte
(Magaldi:)
On this night of a thousand stars
Let me take you to heaven's door
Where the music of love's guitars
Plays for evermore
In the glow of those twinkling lights
We shall love through eternity
On this night in a million nights
Fly away with me
I never dreamed that a kiss could be as sweet as this
But now I know that it can
I used to wander alone without a love of my own
I was a desperate man
But all my grief disappeared and all the sorrow I'd feared
Wasn't there anymore
On that magical day when you first came my way
Mi amor
On this night
On this night
On this night of a thousand stars
Let me take you to heaven's door
Where the music of love's guitars
On my own, pretending he’s beside me,
All alone I walk with him till morning,
Without him I feel his arms around me,
And when I lose my way I close my eyes and he has found me!
In the rain, the pavement shines like silver,
All the nights are misty in the river,
In the darkness, the trees are full of starlight,
And all I see is him and me forever,
And I know it’s only in my mind,
That I’m talking to myself and not to him,
And although I know that he is blind,
Still I say there’s way for us.
I love him, but when the night is over,
He is gone, the river’s just a river,
Without him, the world around me changes,
The trees are bare, and every-where the streets are full of strangers.
I love him, but everyday I’m learning,
All my life, I’ve only been pretending,
Without me his world will go on turning,
A world that’s full of happiness I have never known.
I love him
I love him
I believe it is Old Deuteronomy
Well of all things can it be really
No. Yes. Ho. Hi. Oh my eye!
My mind may be wandering but I confess
I believe it is Old Deuteronomy
Old Deuteronomy's lived a long time
He's a cat who has lived many lives in succession
He was famous in proverb and famous in rhyme
A long while before Queen Victoria's accession
Old Deuteronomy's buried nine wives
And more I am tempted to say ninety-nine
And his numerous progeny prospers and thrives
And the village is proud of him in his decline
At the sight of that placid and bland physiognomy
When he sits in the sun on the vicarage wall
The oldest inhabitant croaks
Well of all things can it be really
No. Yes. Ho. Hi. Oh my eye!
My mind may be wandering but I confess
I believe it is Old Deuteronomy
Well of all things can it be really
No. Yes. Ho. Hi. Oh my eye!
My mind may be wandering but I confess
I believe it is Old Deuteronomy
Well of all things can it be really
No. Yes. Ho. Hi. Oh my eye!
My mind may be wandering but I confess
I believe it is Old Deuteronomy
Well of all things can it be really
No. Yes. Ho. Hi. Oh my eye!
My legs may be tottery, I must go slow
Salve regina mater misericordiae
Vita dulcedo et spes nostra
Salve salve regina
Ad te clamamus exules filii Eva
Ad te suspiramus gementes et flentes
O clemens o pia
Oh what a circus, oh what a show.
Argentina has gone to town.
Over the death of an acress called Eva Perron.
We've all gone crazy: mourning all day and mourning all night
Falling over ourselves to get all of the misery right.
Oh what an exit that's how to go.
When they're ringing your curtain down.
Demand to be burried like Eva Perron
It's quite a sunset and good for the country in aroundabout way
We've made the front page of all the world's papers to day
But who is this Santa Evita?
Why all this howling hysterical sorrow?
What kind of godess has lived among us?
How will we ever get by without her?
Salve etc.
She had her moments she had some style.
The best show in town was the crowd.
Outside Casa Rosade crying "Eva Perron".
But that's all gone now and soon as the smoke from the funeral clears
we're all gone see and how she did nothing for years.
You let down your people Evita,
you were supposed to have been immortal,
that's all they wanted not much to ask for but in the end
you could not deliver
Salve etc.
(while the courus sings Salve the main singer sings the following three lines)
Oh what a circus
Oh what a show
You let down your people, your people Evita Evita Evita Evita.
No matter what they tell us
No matter what they do
No matter what they teach us
What we believe is true
No matter what they call us
However they attack
No matter where they take us
We'll find our own way back
I can't deny what I believe
I can't be what I'm not
I know I'll love forever
I know, no matter what
If only tears were laughter
If only night was day
If only prayers were answered
Then we would hear God say
No matter what they tell you
No matter what they do
No matter what they teach you
What you believe is true
And I will keep you safe and strong
And sheltered from the storm
No matter where it's barren
A dream is being born
No matter who they follow
No matter where they lead
No matter how they judge us
I'll be everyone you need
No matter if the sun don't shine
Or if the skies are blue
No matter what the end is
My life began with you
I can't deny what I believe
I can't be what I'm not
I know, I know
I know this love's forever
That's all that matters now
Pearl:
I guess i'm not too good at keeping love alive for long.
I think i've found the answers but the answer's always wrong.
My first love was my true love and it should have been my last.
The only time i'm happy's when i'm dreaming in the past.
Next time you fall in love
It better be with me,
The way it used to be.
Back then was when
We touched the starlight.
Sometimes you turn away from what your heart tells you is right
And so you settle for whatever gets you through the night.
The flame you thought was dead may suddenly begin to burn
And broken hearts can be repaired, that's something that you learn.
Next time you fall in love
It better be with me,
The way it used to be.
Back then was when
We touched the starlight.
Rusty:
I've re-lived every moment that i ever shared with you.
What fools we were to end a dream that looked like coming true.
Next time you fall in love
It better be with me,
The way it used to be.
Pearl & rusty:
Back then was when
We touched the starlight.
Next time you fall in love
It better be with me,
The way it used to be.
Back then was when
We touched the starlight.
I guess i'm not too good at keeping love alive for long.

Back then was when
Night time sharpens, heightens each sensation
Darkness stirs and wakes imagination
Silently the senses abandon their defenses
Slowly, gently night unfurls its splendor
Grasp it, sense it tremulous and tender
Turn your face away from the garish light of day
Turn your thoughts away from cold, unfeeling light
And listen to the music of the night
Close your eyes and surrender to your darkest dreams
Purge your thoughts of the life you knew before
Close your eyes, let your spirit start to soar
And you'll live as you've never lived before
Softly, deftly music shall caress you
Hear it, feel it secretly possess you
Open up your mind, let your fantasies unwind
In this darkness that you know you cannot fight
The darkness of the music of the night
Let your mind start a journey through a strange new world
Leave all thoughts of the life you knew before
Let your soul take you where you long to be
Only then can you belong to me
Floating, falling sweet intoxication
Touch me, trust me, savor each sensation
Let the dream begin, let your darker side give in
To the power of the music that I write
The power of the music of the night
You alone can make my song take flight
The greatest magicians have something to learn
From Mister Mistoffelees' Conjuring Turn
Mungojerrie and Rumpelteazer were a notorious couple of cats
As knockabout clowns, quick - change comedians
Tight - rope walkers and acrobats
They had an extensive reputation, made their home in Victoria Grove
That was merely their center of operation for they were incurably given to rove
If the area window was found ajar and the basement looked like a field of war
If a tile or two came loose on the roof which presently ceased to be waterproof
If the drawers were pulled out from the bedroom chests
And you couldn't find one of your winter vests
Or after supper one of the girls suddenly missed her Woolworth pearls
Then the family would say, "It's that horrible cat!
It was Mungojerrie or Rumpelteazer!"
And most of the time they left it at that
Mungojerrie and Rumpelteazer had an unusual gift of the gab
They were highly efficient cat burglars as well and remarkably smart at a smash and grab
They made their home in Victoria Grove, they had no regular occupation
They were plausible fellows who liked to engage a friendly policeman in conversation
When the family assembled for Sunday dinner
Their minds made up that they wouldn't get thinner on
Argentine joint, potatoes and greens
Then the cook would appear from behind the scenes
And say in a voice that was broken with sorrow
"I'm afraid you must wait and have dinner tomorrow
The joint has gone from the oven like that!"
Then the family would say, "It's that horrible cat!
It was Mungojerrie or Rumpelteazer!"
And most of the time they left it at that
Mungojerrie and Rumpelteazer had a wonderful way of working together
And some of the time you would say it was luck and some of the time you would say it was weather
They'd go through the house like a hurricane and no sober person could take his oath
Was it Mungojerrie or Rumpelteazer? Or could you have sworn that it might have been both?
When you heard a dining room smash or up from the pantry there came a loud crash
Or down from the library came a loud ping
From a vase which was commonly said to be Ming
Then the family would say: "Now which was which cat?
You ought to ask Mr. Mistoffolees
The original conjuring cat
(There can be no doubt about that)
Please, listen to me, and don't scoff
All his Inventions are off his own bat
The greatest magicians have something to learn
From Mister Mistoffolees' conjuring turn
And we'll all say
Oh, well I never was there ever
A cat so clever as magical Mr. Mistoffolees
He is quiet, he is small, he is black
From the ears to the tip of his tail
He can creep through the tiniest crack
He can walk on the narrowest rail
He can pick any card from a pack
He is equally cunning with dice
He is always deceiving you into believing
That he's only hunting for mice
He can play any trick with a cork
Or a spoon and a bit of fish paste
If you look for a knife or a fork
And you think it is merely misplaced
You have seen it one moment and then it's gone!
But you find it next week lying on the lawn
And we all say
Oh, well I never was there ever
A cat so clever as magical Mr. Mistoffolees
And we all say
Oh, well I never was there ever
A cat so clever as magical Mr. Mistoffolees
And we all say
Oh, well I never was there ever
A cat so clever as magical Mr. Mistoffolees
And we all say
Oh, well I never was there ever
A cat so clever as magical Mr. Mistoffolees
Well, my manner is vague and aloof
You would think there was nobody shyer
But voice has been heard on the roof
When I was curled up by the fire
And I've sometimes been heard by the fire
When I was about on the roof
At least they all heard that somebody purred
Which is incontestable proof of my singular magical powers
And I've known the family to call me in from the garden for hours
While I was asleep in the hall
And not long ago this phenomenal cat
Produced seven kittens right out of a hat
And we all say
Oh, well I never was there ever
A cat so clever as magical Mr. Mistoffolees
Oh, well I never was there ever
A cat so clever as magical Mr. Mistoffolees
And not long ago this phenomenal cat
Produced seven kittens right out of a hat
And we all say
Oh, well I never was there ever
A cat so clever as magical Mr. Mistoffolees
Oh, well I never was there ever
A cat so clever as magical Mr. Mistoffolees
Oh, well I never was there ever
A cat so clever as magical Mr. Mistoffolees
Oh, well I never was there ever
A cat so clever as magical Mr. Mistoffolees

Ladies and gentlemen
Gustave: Mother, please
I'm scared
What a dream
An awful dream
Someone strange and mad
Seething me and drowning me
Christine: Shh, Gustave, it's alright.
Come and meet
A friend of mine
Phantom: Welcome to my world
My friend
Christine: Gustave, this is Mr. Y
Gustave: This place is yours?
Phantom: Every inch of it
Tell me where you'd like to go
Tell me what you'd like to see
I can grant any wish
Gustave: Could you show me
If you please
All the island's mysteries
All that's strange
And wild and dark
In the shadows of the park
Phantom: You shall see it all tomorrow
I promise
Christine: Back to sleep now, Gustave
She had her moments--she had some style
The best show in town was the crowd
Outside the Casa Rosada crying, "Eva Peron"
But that's all gone now--
MAGALDI
Eva beware your ambition--
Screw the middle classes! I will never accept them and
they will never deny me anything again. My father's
other family were middle class, and we were kept out of
sight, hidden from view--
It seems crazy but you must believe
There's nothing calculated, nothing planned
Please forgive me if I seem naive
I would never want to force your hand
But please understand--

JENNY:
I am a mermaid
With golden hair...
ALEX:
I've never seen one like you!
JENNY:
Not all us mermaids
Have silver tails --
I have no tail at all!
ALEX:
Well, I've never,
Seen any mermaids
With knobbly knees!
I'd say this tale
Was a touch too tall,
Maybe a touch too tall...
JENNY:
Sailors would smash on
My jagged rock,
Lured by my siren's song...
ALEX:
It isn't the
Song of the siren
That tortures men --
That's where your theory
Goes sadly wrong,
That's where it all goes wrong...
JENNY:
I thought you'd know better,
You know nothing
About mermaids.
ALEX: (wry)
You know nothing
About sailors...
JENNY:
I do!
Much more than you!
If you were a sailor
And heard my song,
Would you be lured by me?
ALEX:
I wouldn't be
Foolish enough to
Go near your rock --
I'd steer my galleon out to sea...
BOTH:
Who knows when love begins
Who knows what makes it start
One day it's simply there
Alive inside your heart
It slips into your thoughts
It infiltrates your soul
It takes you by surprise
Then seizes full control
Try to deny it
And try to protest
But love won't let you go
Once you've been possessed
Love never dies
Love never falters
Once it has spoken
Love is yours
Love never fades
Love never alters
Hearts may get broken
Love endures
Hearts may get broken
Love endures
And soon as you submit
Surrender flesh and bone
That love takes on a life
Much bigger than your own
It uses you at whim
And drives you to despair
And forces you to feel
More joy than you can bear
Love gives you pleasure
And love brings you pain
And yet when both are gone
Love will still remain
Once it has spoken
Love is yours
Love never dies
Love never alters
Hearts may get broken
Love endures
Hearts may get broken
Love never dies
Love will continue
Love keeps on beating
When you're gone
Love never dies
Once it is in you
Love may be fleeting
Love lives on
Love may be fleeting
?Midnight, not a sound from the pavement
Has the moon lost her memory
She is shining alone.
In the lamplight the whithered leaves collect at my feet
And the wind begins to moan.
Daylight, see the dew on the sunflower
And a rose that is fading
Roses wither away
Like the sunflower I yearn to turn my face to the dawn
I am waiting for the day
Now Old Deuteronomy, just before dawn
Through a silence you feel you could cut with a knife
Announces the cat who can now be reborn
And come back to a different jellicle life
Memory, turn your face to the moonlight
Let your memory lead you
Open up, enter in
If you find there the meaning of what happiness is
Then a new life will begin
Memory, all alone in the moonlight
I can smile at the old days
I was beautiful then
I remember the time I knew what happiness was
Let the memory live again
Burnt out ends of smokey days
The stale cold smell of morning
The streetlamp dies, another night is over
Another day is dawning
Daylight, I must wait for the sunrise
I must think of a new life
And I mustn't give in
When the dawn comes tonight will be a memory too
And a new day will begin
Sunlight, through the trees in the summer
Endless masquerading
Like a flower as the dawn is breaking
The memory is fading
Touch me, it's so easy to leave me
All alone with the memory
Of my days in the sun
If you touch me you'll understand what happiness is

Married Man
Dreams of summer
Secret smiles between us
Of us meeting
You thought they had seen us
We thus tried explaining
Then it started raining
Then you said I love you girl and then
I?m much too old to fall in love again
Time was golden
I felt I was falling
Waiting, smiling
Hoping you?d be calling
Loving eyes upon me
Showing me you love me
I woke up beside you once and said
I don?t think I could fall in love again
Married man you were happy and you let me know
As you run up the stairs to reach my door
But I cried every time you had to go
Should have said, ?don?t come here anymore?
Winter, silence
Shadows on the ceiling
You said, ?you?re too young to know that feeling?
Then your voice seemed colder
Then you said I told her
I said well she?s older but then
She?s young enough to fall in love again
Though I tried to forget her as you live with me
But you cried when she met you to return
You said no that?s all over but you lied
Married man, are you too old to learn?
Spring can be a very cruel season
Help me, help me
Don?t ask for a reason
Please you must believe me
I want you to leave me
One day if you?re free
But not till then
I?m young enough to fall in love again
(BUQUET mysteriously appears, a length of fabric
serving as a cloak, and a piece of rope as the Punjab
lasso. He is showing off to the BALLET GIRLS)
BUQUET
Like yellow parchment
is his skin . . .
a great black hole served as the
nose that never grew . . .
(Demonstrating his method of self-defence against the
Punjab lasso, he inserts his hand between his neck and
the noose, and then pulls the rope taut. With a mixture of
horror and delight, the BALLET GIRLS applaud this
demonstration)
(explaining to them)
You must be always
on your guard,
or he will catch you with his
magical lasso!
(A trap opens up centre stage casting a shadow of the
PHANTOM as he emerges. The GIRLS, linking hands,
run off terrified. The PHANTOM, leading CHRISTINE,
fixes his stare on BUQUET. Sweeping his cape around
CHRISTINE, he exits with her But before they go GIRY
has entered, observing. She turns on BUQUET)
GIRY
Those who speak
of what they know
find, too late, that prudent
silence is wise.
Joseph Buquet,
hold your tongue
he will burn you with the
Macavity!
Macavity's a mystery cat, he's called the hidden paw
For he's a master criminal who can defy the law
He's the bafflement of Scotland Yard, the Flying Squad's despair
For when they reach the scene of crime Macavity's not there!
Macavity, Macavity, there's no one like Macavity
He's broken every human law, he breaks the law of gravity
His powers of levitation would make a fakir stare
And when you reach the scene of crime Macavity's not there!
You may seek him in the basement, you may look up in the air
But I tell you once and once again Macavity's not there!
Macavity's a ginger cat, he's very tall and thin
You would know him if you saw him for his eyes are sunked in
His brow is deeply lined in thought, his head is highly domed
His coat is dusty from neglect, his whiskers are uncombed
He sways his head from side to side with movements like a snake
And when you think he's half asleep, he's always wide awake
Macavity, Macavity, there's no one like Macavity
He's a fiend in feline shape, a monster of depravity
You may meet him in a by-street, you may see him in the square
But when a crime's discovered then Macavity's not there!
He's outwardly respectable, I know he cheats at cards
And his footprints are not found in any files of Scotland Yard's
And when the larder's looted or the jewel case is rifled
Or when the milk is missing or another peke's been stifled
Or the greenhouse glass is broken and the trellis past repair
There's the wonder of the thing Macavity's not there!
Macavity, Macavity, there's no one like Macavity
There never was a cat of such deceitfulness and suavity
He always has an alibi and one or two to spare
What ever time the deed took place Macavity wasn't there!
And they say that all the cats whose wicked deeds are widely known
I might mention Mungojerrie, I might mention Griddlebone
Are nothing more than agents for the cat who all the time
Just controls the operations: the Napolean of crime!
Macavity, Macavity, there's no one like Macavity
He's a fiend in feline shape, a monster of depravity
You may meet him in a by-street, you may see him in the square
But when a crime's discovered then Macavity
Macavity, Macavity, Macavity
When a crime's discovered then Macavity's not there!
Macavity's not there!
Love, love changes everything
Hands and faces, earth and sky
Love, love changes everything
How you live and how you die
Love, love can make the summer fly
Or a night seem like a lifetime
Yes love, love changes everything
Now I tremble at your name
Nothing in the world will ever be the same
Love, love changes everything
Days are longer, words mean more
Love, love changes everything
Pain is deeper than before
Love will turn your world around
And that world will last forever
Yes love, love changes everything
Brings you glory, brings you shame
Nothing in the world will ever be the same
Off into the world we go
Planning futures, shaping years
Love (comes in) and suddenly all our wisdom disappears
Love makes fools of everyone
All the rules we made are broken
Yes love, love changes everyone
Live or perish in its flame
Love will never never let you be the same
Love's a curious thing
It often comes disguised
Look at love the wrong way
It goes un-recognized
So look with your heart
And not with your eyes
A heart understands
A heart never lies
Believe what it feels
And trust what it shows
Look with your heart
The heart always knows
Love is not always beautiful
Not at the start
So open your arms
And close your eyes tight
Look with your heart
And when it finds love
Your heart will be right
Learn from someone who knows
Make sure you don't forget
Love you misunderstand
Is love that you'll regret
Mother
Look with your heart
And not with your eyes
The heart can't be fooled
The heart is too wise
Forget what you think
Ignore what you hear
Look with your heart
It always sees clear
Love is not always beautiful
Not at the start
But open your arms
And close your eyes tight
Look with your heart
And when it finds love
Child of the wilderness
Born into emptiness
Learn to be lonely
Learn to find your way in darkness
Who will be there for you
Comfort and care for you
Learn to be lonely
Learn to be your one companion
Never dreamed out in the world
There are arms to hold you
You’ve always known your heart was on its own
So laugh in your loneliness
Child of the wilderness
Learn to Be lonely
Learn how to love life that is lived alone
Learn to be lonely
(choir:)
Respice, quaesumus, domine
Famulam tuam evita
In infirmitate
Et animam refove, quam creasti
Ut castigationibus emendata
Se tua sentiat medicina salvatam
Per christum, dominuum
Qui vivit et regnat
Per omnia saecula saeculorum
Amen
(translation:
Look with favor, we beseech thee, oh lord
Upon thy handmaid evita
In her weakness
And refresh the soul which thou hast created
That being corrected by thy chastisement
She may find herself cured by thy healing
Through christ, our lord
Who lives and reigns
Forever and ever
Amen )
(che:)
She had her moments, she had some style
The best show in town was the crowd
Outside the casa rosada crying, eva peron
Eva:
the choice was mine and mine completely
i could have any prize that i desired
i could burn with the splendour of the brightest fire
or else, or else i could choose time
remember i was very young then
and the year was forever and a day
so what use could 50, 60, 70 be?
i saw the lights and i was on my way
and how i lived
how they shone,
but how soon the lights were gone
(instrumental)
Che:
the choice was yours and no one else's
you can cry forever in despair
hang your head because she's no longer there
to shine, to dazzle, or betray
how she lived, how she shone
but how soon the lights were gone.
(instrumental)
beauticians:
eyes, hair, face, image
all must be preserved
still life displayed forever
no less than she deserved
Jesus, I am overjoyed
To meet you face to face
You've been getting quite a name
All around the place
Healing cripples
Raising from the dead
Now I understand you're God
At least that's what you've said
So you are the Christ
You're the great Jesus Christ
Prove to me that you're divine-
Change my water into wine
That's all you need do
Then I'll know it's all true
C'mon King of the Jews
Jesus you just won't believe
The hit you've made around here
You are all we talk about
You're the wonder of the year
Oh what a pity
If it's all a lie
Still I'm sure
That you can rock the cynics if you try
So if you are the Christ
Yes the great Jesus Christ
Prove to me that you're no fool-
Walk across my swimming pool
If you do that for me
Then I'll let you go free
C'mon King of the Jews
I only ask what I'd ask any superstar
What is it that you have got
That puts you where you are? (Oh, ho ho)
I am waiting
Yes I'm a captive fan
I'm dying to be shown
That you are not just any man
So if you are the Christ
Yes the great Jesus Christ
Feed my household with this bread
You can do it on your head
Or has something gone wrong?
Jesus, why do you take so long?
Aw, c'mon King of the Jews
Hey! Aren't you scared of me Christ?
Mister Wonderful Christ!
You're a joke, you're not the Lord
You are nothing but a fraud
Take him away
He's got nothing to say!
Get out you King of the
Get out you King of the,
Get out you King of the Jews!
Get out of here, you, you!
Get out of here, you!
Hosanna Heysanna Sanna Sanna
Hosanna Heysanna Hosanna
Hey J C, J C! Won't you smile at me?
Sanna Hosanna, hey Superstar!
Tell the rabble to be quiet
We anticipate a riot
This common crowd
Is much too loud
Tell the mob who sing your songs
That they are fools and they are wrong
They are a curse
They should disperse
Hosanna Heysanna Sanna Sanna
Hosanna Heysanna Hosanna
Hey J C, J C! You're alright by me
Sanna Hosanna, hey Superstar!
Why waste your breath moaning at the crowd?
Nothing can be done to stop the shouting
If every tongue was still, the noise would still continue
The rocks and stones themselves would start to sing
Hosanna Heysanna Sanna Sanna
Hosanna Heysanna Hosanna
Hey J C, J C! Won't you fight for me?
JUDAS
My God! I saw him.
He looked three-quarters dead!
And he was so bad I had to turn my head.
You beat him so hard that he was bent and lame,
And I know who everybody's going to blame.
I don't believe he knows I acted for our good.
I'd save him all this suffering if I could.
And I acted for our good
And I'd save him if I could...
ANNAS
Cut the confessions, forget the excuses.
I don't understand why you're filled with remorse.
All that you've said has come true with a vengeance.
The mob turned against him, you backed the right horse.
CAIAPHAS
What you have done will be the saving of everyone.
You'll be remembered forever for this.
And not only that, you've been paid for your efforts.
Pretty good wages for one little kiss.
JUDAS
Christ, I know you can't hear me,
But I only did what you wanted me too.
Christ, I'd sell out the nation,
For I have been saddled with the murder of you.
I have been spattered with innocent blood.
I shall be dragged through the slime and the mud.
I have been spattered with innocent blood.
I shall be dragged through the slime
And the slime and the slime and the mud
I don't know how to love him.
I don't know why he moves me.
He's a man. He's just a man.
He is not a king. He is just the same
As anyone I know.
He scares me so!
When he's cold and dead will he let me be?
Does he love me too? Does he care for me?
My mind is in darkness.
God I'm sick. I've been used,
And you knew all the time.
God I'll never ever know why you chose me for your crime.
Your foul bloody crime
CHOIR
Poor old Judas. So long Judas.
JUDAS
CHRISTINE:
To my father's grave, please.
In sleep he sang to me, in dreams he came
That voice which calls to me and speaks my name...
Little Lotte thought of everything and nothing
Her Father promised her that he would send her the Angel of Music
Joseph's coat annoyed his brothers
But what makes us mad
Are the things that Joseph tells us
Of the dreams he's often had
I dreamed that in the fields one day
The corn gave me a sign
Your eleven sheaves of corn
All turned and bowed to mine
My sheaf was quite a sight to see
A golden sheaf and tall
Yours were green and second-rate
And really rather small
This is not the kind of thing
We brothers like to hear
It seems to us that Joseph
And his dreams should disappear
I dreamed I saw eleven stars
The sun and moon and sky
Bowing down before my star
It made me wonder why
Could it be that I was born
For higher things than you?
A post in someone's government
A ministry or two
The dreams of our dear brother are
The decade's biggest yawn
His talk of stars and golden sheaves
Is just a load of corn
Not only is he tactless
But he's also rather dim
For there's eleven of us
And there's only one of him
The dreams of course will not come true
That is, we think they won't come true
That is, we hope they won't come true
What if he's right all along?
What if he's right all along?
The dreams are more than crystal clear
The writing on the wall
Means that Joseph some day soon
Will rise above us all
The accuracy of the dreams
We brothers do not know
But one thing we are sure about
The dreamer, the dreamer, the dreamer
The dreamer, the dreamer, dreamer
Go go go Joseph
Go go go Joseph
Jacob. Jacob and sons
Ah ah ah ah ah
Jacob. Jacob and sons
Ah ah ah ah ah
Jacob. Jacob and sons
Jacob. Jacob and sons
Jacob. Jacob and sons
Jacob. Jacob and sons
Jacob, Jacob, Jacob
Jacob and sons
red, yellow, green, brown,
scarlet, black, ocher, peach,
ruby, olive, violet, fawn,
He looks handsome, he looks smart
He is a walking work of art
In his dazzling coat of many colors
How he loves that coat of many colors
It was red, yellow, green, brown
scarlet, black, ocher, peach
ruby, olive, violet, fawn
lilac, gold, chocolate, mauve
cream and crimson and silver and rose
And azure and lemon and russet and grey
And purple and white and pink and orange
And blue
(Whistle)
There's one more angel in heaven
There's one more star in the sky
Joseph we'll never forget you
It's tough but we're gonna get by
There's one more angel in heaven
There's one more star in the sky
Joseph the things that you stood for
Like truth and light never die
Go, go, go Joseph you know what they say
Hang on now Joseph you'll make it some day
Sha la la Joseph you're doing fine
You and your dreamcoat ahead of your time
Go, go, go Joseph you know what they say
Hang on now Joseph you'll make it some day
Sha la la Joseph you're doing fine
You and your dreamcoat ahead of your time
Go, go, go,
Joseph you know what they say
Hang on now Joseph you'll make it some day
Sha la la Joseph you're doing fine
You and your dreamcoat ahead of your time
A Pharaoh's story
A Pharaoh's story
A Pharaoh's story
A Pharaoh's story
Strange as it seems
There's been a run of crazy dreams
And a man who can interpret
Could go far
Could become a star
Could be famous
Could be a big success
Could be famous
Could be a big success
Could be famous
Could be a big success
Could be famous
Could be a big success
Joseph,
Pharaoh's number two
Joseph,
Egypt looks to you
Joseph,
Pharaoh's number two
Joseph,
Egypt looks to you
Joseph!
Well I was wandering
along by the banks of the river
When seven fat cows
came up out of the Nile,
uh-huh oh yeah!
And right behind these
fine healthy animals came
Seven other cows,
skinny and vile, uh-huh oh yeah!
Well the thin cows ate
the fat cows which I
Thought would do them
good, uh-huh oh yeah!
But it didn't make
them fatter like such
A monster supper should
Well the thin cows were as thin
As they had ever, ever, ever been
This dream has got me baffled
Hey, Joseph, what does it mean?
Well you know that kings ain't stupid
But I don't have a clue
So don't be cruel Joseph
Help now me I beg of you
So back in Canaan
the future looked rough
Jacob's family were finding it tough
For the famine has
caught us unprepared
We are thin
We are ill
We are getting scared
It's enough to make anyone weep
We are down to our very last sheep
We will starve if we hang around here
And in Egypt there's food going spare
They've got corn
They've got meat
They've got fruit and drinks
And if we have the time
We could see the Sphinx
So they finally decided to go
Here we go!
Off to Egypt to see brother Jo
Oh no - not he
How you can accuse him is a mystery
Save him - take me
Benjamin is straighter
than the tall palm tree
Oh, yes - its true
Benjamin is straighter
than the big bamboo
No ifs, No buts
Benjamin is honest as coconuts
La la la la la la la la...
So Jacob came to Egypt
No longer feeling old
And Joseph came to meet him
In his chariot
Of gold
Of gold
Of gold
Give me my colored coat
My amazing colored coat
Give me my colored coat
Ensemble
So Jacob came to Egypt
No longer feeling old
And Joseph came to meet him
In his chariot
Of gold
Of gold
Of gold
Narrator
Joseph knew by this his brothers now were honest men
The time had come at last to reunite them all again
Joseph
Can't you recognize my face?
Is it hard to see
That Joseph who you thought was dead, your brother
It's me?
Ensemble & Children
Joseph, Joseph, is it really true?
Joseph, Joseph, is it really you?
Narrator, Ensemble & Children
Chorus:
With feasting and dancing and song
Tonight in celebration
We greet the victorious throng
Returned to bring salvation
The trumpets of Carthage resound
Hear, Romans, now and tremble
Hark to our step on the ground
Hear the drums - Hannibal comes
Piangi:
Sad to return to find the land we love
Threatened once more by Rome's far-reaching grasp
Tomorrow we shall break the chains of Rome
Tonight rejoice, your army has come home
Carlotta:
Once more to my welcoming arms
My love returns in splendor
Piangi:
Once more to those sweetest of charms
My heart and soul surrender
Chorus:
The trumpeting elephants sound
Hear, Romans, now and tremble
Hark to their step on the ground
Gus is the cat at the theater door
His name, as I ought to have told you before
Is really Asparagus, and that's such a fuss to pronounce
That we usually call him just Gus
His coat's very shabby. He's thin as a rake
And he suffers from palsy that makes his paw shake
Yet he was in his youth quite the smartest of cats
But no longer a terror to mice or to rats
For he isn't the cat that he was in his prime
Though his name was quite famous, he says, in his time
And whenever he joins his friends at their club
(Which takes place at the back of the neighboring pub)
He loves to regale them, if someone else pays
With anecdotes drawn from his palmiest days
For he once was a star of the highest degree
He has acted with Irving, he's acted with tree
And he likes to relate his successes on the halls
Where the gallery once gave him seven cat calls
But his greatest creation as he love to tell
Was Firefrorefiddle, the Fiend of the Fell
I have played in my time every possible part
And I used to know seventy speeches by heart
I'd extemporize backchat, I knew how to gag
And I knew how to let the cat out of the bag
I knew to act with my back and my tail
With and hour of rehersal, I never could fail
I'd a voice that would soften the hardest of hearts
Whether I took the lead, or in character parts
I have sat by the bedside of poor little Nell
When the curfew was run then I swung on the bell
In the Pantomime Season I never fell flat
And I once understudied Dick Whittington's cat
But my grandest creation, as history will tell
Was Firefrorefiddle, the Fiend of the Fell
Then, if someone will give him a toothful of gin
He will tell how he once played a part in East Lynne
At a Shakespeare performance he once walked on pat
When some actor suggested the need for a cat
And I say now these kittens, they do not get trained
As we did in the days when Victoria reigned
They never did get drilled in a regular troup
And they think they are smart just to jump through a hoop
And he says as he scratches himself with his claws
Well the theater is certainly not what it was
These modern productions are all very well
But there's nothing to equal from what I hear tell
That moment of mystery when I made history
As Firefrorefiddle, the Fiend of the Fell
I once crossed the stage on a telegraph wire
To rescue a child when a house was on fire
And I think that I still can much better than most
Produce blood curdling noises to bring on the ghost
And I once played Growltiger
Could do it again, could do it again
Growltiger was a Bravo cat who travelled on a barge
In face he was the roughest cat that ever roamed at large
From Gravesend up to Oxford he pursued his evil aims
Rejoicing in his title of the 'Terror of the Thames'
His manners and appearance did not calculate to please
His coat was torn and seedy, it was baggy at the knees
Once ear was somewhat missing, no need to tell you why
And he scowled upon a hostile world from one forbidding eye
The cottagers of Rotherhithe knew something of his fame
At Hammersmith and Putney people shuddered at his name
The would fortify the hen house, lock up the silly goose
When the rumor ran along the shore: Growltiger's on the loose!
Woe to the weak canary that fluttered from it's cage
Woe to the pampered Pekeinese, that face Growltiger's rage
Woe to the bristly bandicoot, that lurks on foreign ships
And woe to any cat with whom Growltiger came to grips
But most to cats of foreign race his hatred had been vowed
To cats of foreign name and race no quarter was allowed
The Persian and the Siamese regarded him with fear
Because it was a Siamese had mauled his missing ear
Now on a peaceful summer night all nature seemed at play
The tender Moon was shining bright, the barge at Molsey lay
All in the balmy moonlight it lay rocking on the tide
And Growltiger was disposed to show his sentimental side
In the forepeak of the vessel Growltiger stood alone
Concentrating my attention on the Lady Griddlebone
And my raffish crew were sleeping in their barrels and their bunks
As the Siamese came creeping in their sampans and their junks
Growltiger had no eye or ear for aught but Griddlebone
And the lady seemed enraptured by my manly baritone
Disposed to relaxation and awaiting no surprise
But the moonlight sone reflected from a thousand bright blue eyes
And closer still and closer the sampans circled 'round
And yet from all the enemy there was not heard a soun
The foe was armed with toasting forks and cruel carving knives
And the lovers sang their last duet in danger of their lives
Then Genghis gave the signal to his fierce Monglian hordes
Abandoning their sampans, the Chinks they swarmed aboard
Abandoning their sampans, the pullaways, their junks
They battened down the hatches on the crew within their bunks
Then Griddlebone she gave a screech for she was badly skeered
I am sorry to admit it, but she quickly disappeared
She probably escaped with ease, I'm sure she was not drowned
But a serried ring of flashing steel Growltiger did surround
The ruthless foe pressed forward in subborn rank on rank
Growltiger to his vast surprise was forced to walk the plank
He who a hundered victims had driven to that drop
At the end of all his crimes was forced to go kerflip, kerflop
Oh there was joy in Wapping when the news flew through the land
At Maidenhead and Henley there was dancing on the strand
Rats were roasted whole in Brentford and Victoria Dock
And a day of celebration was commanded in Bangkok!
These modern productions are all very well
But there's nothing to equal from what I hear tell
Are you blind when you're born? Can you see in the dark?
Dare you look look at a king? Would you sit on his throne?
Can you say of your bite that it's worse than your bark?
Are you cock of the walk when you're walking alone?
Because jellicles are and jellicles do
Jellicles do and jellicles would
Jellicles would and jellicles can
Jellicles can and jellicles do
When you fall on your head, do you land on your feet?
Are you tense when you sense there's a storm in the air?
Can you find your way blind when you're lost in the street?
Do you know how to go to the heaviside layer?
Because jellicles can and jellicles do
Jellicles do and jellicles can
Jellicles can and jellicles do
Jellicles do and jellicles can
Jellicles can and jellicles do
Can you ride on a broomstick to places far distant?
Familiar with candle, with book, and with bell?
Were you Whittington's friend? The Pied Piper's assistant?
Have you been an alumnus of heaven and hell?
Are you mean like a minx? Are you lean like a lynx?
Are you keen to be seen when you're smelling a rat?
Were you there when the pharoahs commissioned the Sphinx?
If you were, and you are, you're a jellicle cat
Jellicle songs for jelllicle cats
Jellicle songs for jelllicle cats
Jellicle songs for jelllicle cats
Jellicle songs for jelllicle cats
Jellicle songs for jelllicle cats
We can dive through the air like a flying trapeze
We can turn double somersaults, bounce on a tire
We can run up a wall, we can swing through the trees
We can balance on bars, we can walk on a wire
Jellicles can and jellicles do
Jellicles can and jellicles do
Jellicles can and jellicles do
Jellicles can and jellicles do
Jellicle songs for jellicle cats
Jellicle songs for jellicle cats
Jellicle songs for jellicle cats
Jellicle songs for jellicle cats
Can you sing at the same time in more than one key?
Duets by Rossini and waltzes by Strauss?
And can you (as cats do) begin with a 'C'?
That always triumphantly brings down the house?
Jellicle cats are queen of the nights
Singing at astronomical heights
Handling pieces from the 'Messiah'
Hallelujah, angelical Choir
The mystical divinity of unashamed felinity
Round the cathedral rang 'Vivat'
Life to the everlasting cat!
Feline, fearless, faithful and true
To others who do-what
Jellicles do and jellicles can
Jellicles can and jellicles do
Jellicle cats sing jellicle chants
Jellicles old and jellicles new
Jellicle song and jellicle dance
Jellicle songs for jellicle cats
Jellicle songs for jellicle cats
Jellicle songs for jellicle cats
Jellicle songs for jellicle cats
Practical cats, dramatical cats
Pragmatical cats, fanatical cats
Oratorical cats, Delphicoracle cats
Skeptical cats, Dispeptical cats
Romantical cats, Pedantical cats
Critical cats, parasitical cats
Allegorical cats, metaphorical cats
Statistical cats and mystical cats
Political cats, hypocritical cats
Clerical cats, hysterical cats
Cynical cats, rabbinical cats
Jellicle songs for jellicle cats
Jellicle songs for jellicle cats
Jellicle songs for jellicle cats
Jellicle songs for jellicle cats
Jellicle songs for jellicle cats
There's a man over there with a look of surprise
As much as to say well now how about that?
Do I actually see with my own very eyes
A man who's not heard of a jellicle cat?
CHRISTINE
I remember there was mist
Swirling mist upon a vast, glossy lake
There were candles all around
And on the lake there was a boat
And in the boat there was a man
Who was that shape in the shadows?
Whose is the face in the mask?
(She takes of his mask)
PHANTOM
Damn you!
You little plying pandora!
You little demon!
Is this what you wanted to see?!
Curse you!
You little lying Delilah!
You little viper!
Now you cannot ever be free!
Damn you!
Curse you!
Stranger than you dreamt it
Can you even dare to look?
Or bear to think of me
This lonesome gargoyle
Who burns in hell, but secretly
Yearns for heaven, secretly...but Christine...
Fear can turn to love
You'll learn to see, to find the man
Behind the monster, this
Repulsive carcass who seems a beast
But secretly dreams of beauty, secretly, secretly
oh...Christine
Come we must return
Those two fools who run my theater
I dreamed a dream in time gone by,
When hope was high and life worth living,
I dreamed that love would never die,
I dreamed that god would be forgiving.
Then I was young and un-afraid,
When dreams was high and used and wasted,
There was no ransom to be paid,
No song un-sung, no wine un-tasted.
But the tigers come at night,
But the tigers come at night,
With their voices soft as thunder,
Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh,
As they tear your hopes apart,
As they tear your hopes apart,
As they turn your dreams to shame.
He slept a summer by my side,
He filled my days with endless wonder,
He took my childhood in his stride,
But he was gone when autumn came.
And still I dreamed he’d come to me,
That we would live the years together,
But there are dreams that can-not be,
And there are storms we can-not weather
I had a dream my life would be,
So different now from what it seemed,
I don't know how to love him
What to do, how to move him
I've been changed, yes really changed
In these past few days
When I've seen myself
I seem like someone else
I don't know how to take this
I don't see why he moves me
He's a man
He's just a man
And I've had so many
Men before
In very many ways
He's just one more
Should I bring him down
Should I scream and shout
Should I speak of love
Let my feelings out?
I never thought I'd come to this
What's it all about?
Don't you think it's rather funny
I should be in this position?
I'm the one
Who's always been
So calm so cool
No lover's fool
Running every show
He scares me so
I never thought I'd come to this
What's it all about?
If he said he loved me
I'd be lost
I'd be frightened
I couldn't cope
Just couldn't cope
I'd turn my head
I'd back away
I wouldn't want to know
He scares me so
I want him so
Whenever I see your face, the world disappears,
All in a single glance of, revealing,
You smile and I feel as though, I've known you for years,
How do I know to trust what I'm feeling.
I believe my heart, what else can I do,
When every part of every thought leads me straight to you,
I believe my heart, there's no other choice,
For now whenever my heart speaks, I can only hear your voice.
A lifetime before we met, has faded away,
How did I live a moment without you,
You don't have to speak at all, I know what you'd say,
And I know every secret about you.
I believe my heart, it believes in you,
It's telling me that what I see is completely true,
I believe my heart, how can it be wrong,
It says that what I feel for you I will feel my whole life long.
I believe my heart, it believes in you,
It's telling me that what I see is completely true,
And with all my soul I believe my heart,
Only you have the power within you
Just believe in yourself, the sea will part before you
Stop the rain, turn the tide
If only you use the power within you
Needn't beg the world to turn around and help you
If you draw on what you have within you
Somewhere deep inside
Starlight express, you must confess
Are you real, yes or no?
Starlight express, answer me yes
I don't want you to go
Rusty, you're blind, look in your mind
I'm there, nothing's new
The Starlight Express is no more, nor less
Than you, Rusty, I am you
And you, and only you
Have the power within you
Just believe in yourself
The sea will part before you
Stop the rain, turn the tide
If only you
Use the power within you
Needn't beg the world to turn around and help you
If you draw on what is deep inside
[Che:]
High flying, adored
So young, the instant queen
A rich beautiful thing, of all the talents
A cross between a fantasy of the bedroom and a saint
You were just a backstreet girl
Hustling and fighting, scratching and biting
High flying, adored
Did you believe in your wildest moments
All this would be yours
That you'd become the lady of them all?
Were there stars in your eyes
When you crawled in at night
From the bars, from the sidewalks
From the gutter theatrical
Don't look down, it's a long, long way to fall
High flying, adored
What happens now, where do you go from here?
For someone on top of the world
The view is not exactly clear
A shame you did it all at twenty-six
There are no mysteries now
Nothing can thrill you, noone fulfill you
High flying, adored
I hope you come to terms with boredom
So famous so easily, so soon
It's not the wisest thing to be
You won't care if they love you
It's been done before
You'll despair if they hate you
You'll be drained of all energy
All the young who've made it would agree
[Eva:]
High flying, adored
That's good to hear but unimportant
My story's quite usual
Local girl makes good, weds famous man
I was stuck in the right place at the perfect time
Filled a gap, I was lucky
But one thing I'll say for me
Jesus I am overjoyed to meet You face to face
You've been getting quite a name all around the place
Healing cripples, raising from the dead
And now I understand You're God at least that's what You've said
So You are the Christ
You're the great Jesus Christ
Prove to me that You're divine
Change my water into wine
That's all You need do
Then I'll know it's all true
C'mon King of the Jews
Jesus You just won't believe the hit You've made around here
You are all we talk about the wonder of the year
Oh what a pity if it's all a lie
Still I'm sure that You can rock the cynics if You try
So if You are the Christ
You're the great Jesus Christ
Prove to me that You're no fool
Walk across my swimming pool
If You do that for me
Then I'll let You go free
C'mon King of the Jews
I only ask things I'd ask any superstar
What is it that You have got that puts You where You are?
I am waiting, yes I'm a captive fan
I'm dying to be shown that You are not just any man
So if You are the Christ
Yes the great Jesus Christ
Feed my household with this bread
You can do it on Your head
Or has something gone wrong
Why do You take so long?
C'mon King of the Jews
Hey, aren't You scared of me Christ
Mister wonderful Christ
You're a joke, You're not the Lord
You're nothing but a fraud
Take him away, He's got nothing to say
Get out You King of the, get out You
Get out You King of the
Get out You King of the Jews
Get out You King of the Jews
My mind is clearer now--
At last all too well
I can see where we all soon will be
If you strip away the myth from the man
You will see where we all soon will be
Jesus!
You’ve started to believe
The things they say of you
You really do believe
This talk of God is true
And all the good you’ve done
Will soon get swept away
You’ve begun to matter more
Than the things you say
Listen, Jesus I don’t like what I see
All I ask is that you listen to me
And remember--
I’ve been your right hand man all along
You have set them all on fire
They think they’ve found the new Messiah
And they’ll hurt you when they find they’re wrong
I remember when this whole thing began
No talk of God then--
We called you a man
And believe me--
My admiration for you hasn’t died
But every word you say today
Gets twisted round some other way
And they’ll hurt if they think you’ve lied
Nazareth, your famous son
Should have stayed a great unknown
Like his father carving wood--
He’d have made good
Table chairs and oaken chests would have suited Jesus best
He’d caused nobody harm--no-one alarm
Listen Jesus do you care for your race?
Don’t you see we must keep in our place?
We are occupied--
Have you forgotten how put down we are?
I’m frightened by the crowd
For we are getting much too loud
And they’ll crush us if we go too far
Listen, Jesus to the warning I give
Please remember that I want us to live
But it’s sad to see our chances weakening with every hour
All your followers are blind
Too much Heaven On Their Minds
It was beautiful but now it’s sour
hurry up
You won't believe it
Take a look what's over here
Who imagined just how big the place would be?
The man called mr. y
Put it up in just a year
It's a little slice of heaven by the sea
Look there's restaurants a mid-way
A gigantic concert hall
(the biggest fun house ever seen)
A volcano that erupts each day at three
(wonders brought from 'round the world)
The season's just begun
And mr. y has got it all
Crystal fountains grand pavilions
Hell it must have cost him millions
It's a little slice of heaven by the sea
Over here
The sights the sounds
The lights the smells
The wonder wheels the carousels
The gardens and arcades
The marble colonnades
The rides
(the rides)
The shows
(the shows)
The game of chance
The rush
(the rush)
The whirl
(the whirl)
The sheer romance
(the sheer romance)
And the rumors
What about 'em?
Things so odd you daren't doubt 'em
Freaks and monsters
Aberrations
With mechanical creations
And the genius who designed it
Wears a mask
A mask
A mask
But what's behind it?
What's behind it?
What's behind it?
What's behind it?
What's behind it?
Fancy ballrooms
Altered spaces
Shoot the shoots and steeple chases
A casino
A museum
Look a roman coliseum
And a concert hall that's bigger than the met
What's inside it?
What's inside it?
What's inside it?
Dinah-
I'm fed up with all this racing,
This electric thin i'm chasing,
Dosent have that certain something,
That a girl expects to hear,
He never whistles at me!
It's damaging my staus,
I dont think he can whistle at me!
He lacks the aparatus,
Why do you never whistle at me?
Beginnig to suspect you!
I need someone to whistle at me,
Gonna disconnect you,
Electra-
C.B,
C.B,
Dinah's gone and made a disconnection!
C.B,
C.B,
Goodnight and thank you, Huevo
She is in every magazine
Been photographed and seen, she is known
We don't like to rush, but your case has been packed
If she's missed anything, you could give her a ring
But she won't always answer the phone
Oh, but it's sad when a love affair dies
But we have pretended enough
It's best that we both stop fooling ourselves
Which means
There is no one, no one at all
Never has been, and never will be a lover, male or female
Who hasn't an eye on, in fact they rely on
Tricks they can try on their partner
They're hoping their lover will help them or keep them
Support them, promote them, don't blame them
You are the same
Goodnight and thank you, Emilio
You've completed your task
What more can we ask of you now?
Please sign the book on the way out the door
And that will be all, if she needs you, she'll call
But I don't think that's likely somehow
Oh, but it's sad when a love affair dies
But when we were hot, we were hot
I know you'll look back on the good times we've shared
Which means
There is no one, no one at all
Never has been, and never will be a lover, male or female
Who hasn't an eye on, in fact they rely on
Tricks they can try on their partner
They're hoping their lover will help them or keep them
Support them, promote them, don't blame her
You are the same
There is no soap, no soap like Zaz
No detergent, lotion or oil with such power in the shower
It's the mother and father of luxury lather
The talk of the bath, the great ointment
One little frolic with new Zaz Carbolic
You're scented, you'll be sent
Goodnight and thank you, Senor Jabon
We are grateful you found her a spot on the sound radio
We'll think of you every time she's on the air
We'd love you to stay but you'd be in the way
So, do up your trousers and go
Oh, but it's sad when a love affair dies
The decline into silence and doubt
Our passion was just too intense to survive
Which means
This is a club I should never have joined
Someone has made us look fools
Argentine men call the sexual shots
Someone has altered the rules
Fame on the wireless as far as it goes
Is all very well but every girl knows
She needs a man she can monopolize
With fingers in dozens of different pies
Narrator
Joseph's luck was really out
His spirit and his fortune low
Alone he sat, alone he thought
Of happy times he used to know
First Man
Hey dreamer, don't be so upset
Second Man
Hey Joseph, you're not beaten yet

Baker & Butler
We don't think that we will ever
See the light of day again
Hey Joseph, help us if you can
We've had dreams that we don't understand
Narrator & Ensemble
Both men were servants of Pharaoh the King
Both in the doghouse for doing their thing
Narrator
One was a baker, a cook in his prime
One was a butler, the Jeeves of his time
Joseph
Tell me of your dreams my friends
And I will tell you what they show
Though I cannot guarantee
To get it right, I'll have a go
Narrator
First the butler, trembling took the floor
Nervously he spoke of what he saw
Butler
There I was standing in front of a vine
I picked some grapes and I crushed them to wine
I gave some to Pharaoh who drank from my cup
I tried to interpret but I had to give up
Joseph
You will soon be free, my friend
So do not worry any more
The king will let you out of here
You'll buttle as you did before
Narrator
Next the baker rose to tell his dream
Hoping it would have a similar theme
Baker
There I was standing with baskets of bread
High in the sky I saw birds overhead
Who flew to my baskets and ate every slice
Give me the message, like his would be nice
Joseph
Sad to say your dream is not
The kind of dream I'd like to get
Pharaoh has it in for you
Your execution date is set
Don't rely on all I said I saw
It's just that I have not been wrong before
Ensemble

How about - They don't know eachother
he works the nightshift
and she takes classes all day
here's the thing:
they both share the same room
sleep in the same bed - it works out cheaper that way
Well I've a feeling you're just kidding
But to me it sounds believable
Makes a better opening, than that carchase scene
Girl finds boy borrowing her toothbrush
or oversleeping
or at her sewing machine
[spoken dialog]
Back to work
What if he's a teacher?
Where does that get us?
Don't see what good that would do
No it's great!
If they do the same job
so much in common - they'd fall in love
wouldn't you?
Yes, but if he's just a teacher
Then we lose those scenes in the factory
Not if he's a champion for the working man
Girl likes boy
she respects his talent
working with someone - can turn you into a fan
this is fun - writing, with a parther
This time it could be
One helluva movie
Can we really do it?
I only want to say
If there is a way
Take this cup away from me
For I dont want to taste its poison
Feel it burn me,
I have changed
Im not as sure
As when we started
Then, I was inspired
Now Im sad and tired
Listen, surely Ive exceeded expectations
I Tried for three years, seems like thirty
Could you ask as much from any other man?
But if I die
See the saga through and do the things you ask of me
Let them hate me, hit me, hurt me, nail me to their tree
I'd wanna know I'd wanna know my God
I'd wanna see Id wanna see my God
Why I should die
Would I be more noticed than I ever was before?
Would the things Ive said and done matter any more?
Id have to know Id have to know my Lord
I'd have to know I'd have to know my Lord
Id have to see Id have to see my Lord
I'd have to see I'd have to see my Lord
If I die what will be my reward?
If I die what will be my reward?
Id have to know Id have to know my Lord
I'd have to know, have to know my Lord
Why should I die?
WHY should I die?
Can you show me now that I would not be killed in vain?
Show me just a little of your omnipresent brain
Show me theres a reason for your wanting me to die
Youre far too keen on where and how but not so hot on why
Alright Ill die!
Just watch me, just watch me die!
See how I die!
Then I was inspired
Now Im sad and tired
After all Ive tried for three years, seems like ninety
Why then am I scared to finish what I started
What you started -- I didnt start it
God thy will is hard
But you hold every card
I will drink your cup of poison,
Nail me to your cross and break me
Bleed me, beat me, kill me
Take me now

Try not to get worried, try not to turn on to
Problems that upset you oh don't you know
Everything's alright yes everything's fine
And we want you to sleep well tonight
Let the world turn without you tonight
If we try we'll get by so forget all about us tonight
APOSTLES'WOMEN
Everything's alright yes everything's alright yes
MARY MAGDALENE
Sleep and I shall soothe you, calm you and anoint you
Myrrh for your hot forehead oh then you'll feel
Everything's alright yes everything's fine
And it's cool and the ointment's sweet
For the fire in your head and feet
Close your eyes close your eyes
And relax think of nothing tonight
APOSTLES' WOMEN
Everything's alright yes everything's alright yes
JUDAS
Hey - hey - hey
Woman your fine ointment - brand
new and expensive
Should have been saved for the poor
Why has it been wasted? We could have raised maybe
Three hundred silver pieces or more
People who are hungry, people who are starving
They matter more than your feet and hair
MARY MAGDALENE
Try not to get worried, try not to turn on to
Problems that upset you oh don't you know...
MARY MAGDALENE,
APOSTLES' WOMEN
Everything's alright yes everything's alright yes...
JESUS
Surely you're not saying we have the resources
To save the poor from their lot?
There will be poor always, pathetically struggling -
Look at the good things you've got!
Think! while you still have me
Move! while you still see me
You'll be lost and you'll be sorry when I'm gone
[Eva:]
The actress hasn't learned the lines you'd like to hear
She's sad for her country, sad to be defeated
By her own weak body
[Crowds:]
Evita! Evita! [repeat in background]
I want to tell the people of Argentina
I've decided I should decline
All the honors and titles you've pressed me to take
For I'm contented
Let me simply go on as the woman who brings her people
To the heart of Peron
Don't cry for me Argentina
The truth is I shall not leave you
Though it may get harder for you to see me
I'm Argentina, and always will be
Have I said too much?
There's nothing more I can think of to say to you
But all you have to do is look at me to know
EVA:
To think that a man, as famous as you are, could love a
poor little nothing like me!
I want to be a part of B.A.--Buenos Aires--Big Apple!
EVA and FAMILY
She wants to be a part of B.A.--Buenos Aires--Big Apple!
Just listen to that! They're onto you Magaldi! I'd get out
while you can
It's happened at last--I'm starting to get started--I'm
moving out with my man
MAGALDI
Now Eva don't get carried away-
Monotony past--suburbia departed--who could ever get
kicks in the back of the sticks?
MAGALDI
Don't hear words that I didn't say
EVA's FAMILY
What's that? You'd desert the girl you love?
MAGALDI
The girl I love? What are you talking about?
EVA's FAMILY
She really brightened up your out of town engagement,
she gave you all she had--she wasn't in your contract
--you must be quite relieved that no-one's told the papers
--so far-
I want to be a part of B.A.--Buenos Aires--Big Apple!
Would I have done what I did if I hadn't thought, if I
hadn't known, we would stay together?
Seems to me there's no point in resisting, she's made up
her mind, you've no choice. Why don't you be the man
who discovered her? You'll never be remembered for
your voice.
MAGALDI
The city can be paradise for those who have the cash, the
class and the connections--what you need to make a
splash. The likes of you get swept up in the morning
with the trash--if you were rich or middle class-
Screw the middle classes! I will never accept them! And
they will never deny me anything again! My father's
other family were middle class and we were kept out of
sight, hidden from view, at his funeral! If these are the
people of Buenos Aires I welcome the chance to shine in
their city!
Do all your one night stands give you this trouble?
MAGALDI
Eva, beware of the city
It's hungry and cold, can't be controlled, it is mad
Those who are fools are swallowed up whole
And those who are not become
What they should not become
Changed--in short they go bad
Bad is good for me--I'm bored, so clean and so ignored
I've only been predictable--respectable!
Birds fly out of here so why oh why oh why the hell can't I
I only want variety--notoriety!
I want to be a part of B.A.--Buenos Aires--Big Apple!
EVA and FAMILY
She wants to be a part of B.A.--Buenos Aires--Big Apple!
MAGALDI
Five years from now I shall come back
And finally say, you have your way--come to town
But you'll look at me with a foreigner's eyes
The magical city a
Younger girl's city, a
Fantasy long since put down
All you've done to me--was that a young girl's fantasy?
I played your city games alright--didn't I?
I already know what cooks, how the dirty city feels and looks
I tasted it last night, didn't I?
I'm going to be a part of B.A.--Buenos Aires--Big Apple!
EVA and FAMILY
She's going to be a part of B.A.--Buenos Aires--Big Apple!
MAGALDI
Eva beware your ambition
It's hungry and cold, can't be controlled, will run wild
This in a man is a danger enough
But you are a woman, not
Even a woman, not
Very much more than a child and whatever you say
PHANTOM
Down once more
to the dungeon
of my black despair!
Down we plunge
to the prison
of my mind!
Down that path
into darkness
deep as hell!
Why, you ask,
was I bound and chained
in this cold and dismal place?
Not for any
mortal sin, but the
wickedness of
my abhorrent face!
Track down this murderer!
He must be found!
PHANTOM
Hounded out by
everyone!
Met with hatred
everywhere!
No kind word from
anyone!
No compassion
anywhere!
Christine, Christine...
Why, why...?
GIRY
Your hand at the level of your
eyes!
RAOUL
..at the level of your eyes...
Your hand at the level of your
eyes!
Track down this
murderer -
He must be found!
Hunt out this
animal,
who runs to ground!
Too long he's preyed on us -
but now we know:
the Phantom of the Opera
is there,
deep down below...
He's here:
the Phantom of the Opera...
CHRISTINE
Have you gorged yourself
at last, in your
lust for blood?
Am I now to be
prey to your
lust for flesh?
PHANTOM
That fate, which
condemns me
to wallow in blood
has also
denied me
the joys of the flesh...
this face -
the infection
which poisons our love...
This face,
which earned
a mother's fear
and loathing...
A mask,
my first
unfeeling scrap
of clothing...
Pity comes
too late -
turn around
and face your fate:
An eternity of this
before your eyes!
CHRISTINE
This haunted face
holds no horror
for me now...
It's in your soul
that the true
distortion lies...
PHANTOM
Wait! I think, my dear,
we have a guest!
Sir, this is indeed
an unparalleled delight!
I had rather hoped
that you would come.
And now my wish comes true -
you have truly made my night!
RAOUL
Free her!
Do what you like,
only free her!
Have you no pity?
PHANTOM
Your lover makes
a passionate plea!
CHRISTINE
Please, Raoul, it's useless...
RAOUL
I love her!
Does that mean nothing?
I love her!
Show some compassion...
PHANTOM
The world showed no
compassion to me!
RAOUL
Christine...
Christine...
Let me see her...
PHANTOM
Be my guest, sir...
Monsieur, I
bid you welcome!
Did you think that
I would harm her?
Why should I make
her pay
for the sins which
are yours?
Order your fine horses now!
Raise up your hand to the level
of your eyes!
Nothing can save you now-
except perhaps Christine...
Start a new life with me -
Buy his freedom with your love!
Refuse me, and you send your
lover to his death!
This is your choice -
This is the point of no return!
CHRISTINE
The tears I might have shed
for your dark fate
grow cold, and turn to tears
of hate...
RAOUL
Christine, forgive
me, please forgive me...
*I did it all
*for you, and all for
*nothing...
*CHRISTINE
*Farewell,

*PHANTOM
*For either way

*you cannot win!
So, do you end
your days with me,
or do you send
him to his grave?
RAOUL
Why make her lie
to you, to save
*CHRISTINE
*Angel of Music...
*PHANTOM
*Past the point
*of no return -
*RAOUL
*For pity's sake,
*Christine, say no!
*CHRISTINE
*...why this torment?
*PHANTOM
*...the final threshold...
*RAOUL
*Don't throw your life
*away for my sake...
*CHRISTINE
*When will you see
*reason...?
*PHANTOM
*His life is now the prize
*which you must earn!
*RAOUL
*I fought so hard
*to free you...
*CHRISTINE
*Angel of Music...
*PHANTOM
*You've passed the point
*of no return...
CHRISTINE
..you deceived me -
I gave my mind
blindly...
PHANTOM
You try my patience -
make your choice!
CHRISTINE
Pitiful creature
of darkness...
What kind of life
have you known...?
God, give me courage
to show you
you are not
alone...

PHANTOM
You alone
can make my song take flight -
it's over now, the music of the
CHORUS
Here the sire may serve the dam,
here the master takes his meat!
Here the sacrificial lamb
utters one despairing bleat!
CARLOTTA AND CHORUS
Poor young maiden! For the thrill
on your tongue of stolen sweets
you will have to pay the bill -
tangled in the winding sheets!
Serve the meal and serve the maid!
Serve the master so that, when
tables, plans and maids are laid,
Don Juan triumphs once again!
(SIGNOR PIANGI, as Don Juan, emerges from behind the arch.
MEG, a gypsy dancer pirouettes coquettishly for him.
He throws her a purse. She catches it and leaves)
DON JUAN
Passarino, faithful friend,
once again recite the plan.
PASSARINO
Your young guest believes I'm you -
I, the master, you, the man.
DON JUAN
When you met you wore my cloak,
with my scarf you hid your face.
She believes she dines with me,
in her master's borrowed place!
Furtively, we'll scoff and quaff,
stealing what, in truth, is mine.
When it's late and modesty
starts to mellow, with the wine . . .
PASSARINO
You come home! I use your voice -
slam the door like crack of doom!
DON JUAN
I shall say: "come - hide with me!
Where, oh, where? Of course - my room!"
PASSARINO
Poor thing hasn't got a chance!
DON JUAN
Here's my hat, my cloak and sword.
Conquest is assured,
if I do not forget myself and laugh . . .
(DON JUAN puts on PASSARINO's cloak
and goes into the curtained alcove where the bed awaits.
Although we do not yet know it, the Punjab Lasso has done its work,
and SIGNOR PIANGI is no more.
When next we see DON JUAN, it will be the PHANTOM.
Meanwhile, we hear AMINTA (CHRISTINE) singing happily in the distance)
AMINTA (CHRISTINE - offstage, entering)
". . . no thoughts
within her head,
but thoughts of joy!
No dreams
within her heart
but dreams of love!"
PASSARINO (onstage)
Master?
DON JUAN (PHANTOM - behind the curtain)
Passarino - go away!
For the trap is set and waits for its prey . . .
(PASSARINO leaves. CHRISTINE (AMINTA) enters.
She takes off her cloak and sits down. Looks about her. No one.
She starts on an apple.
The PHANTOM, disguised as DON JUAN pretending to be PASSARINO,
emerges.
He now wears PASSARINO's robe, the cowl of which hides his face.
His first words startle her)
DON JUAN (PHANTOM)
You have come here
in pursuit of
your deepest urge,
in pursuit of
that wish,
which till now
has been silent,
silent . . .
I have brought you,
that our passions
may fuse and merge -
in your mind
you've already
succumbed to me
dropped all defences
completely succumbed to me -
now you are here with me:
no second thoughts,
you've decided,
PERON
Dice are rolling, the knives are out
I see every bad sign in the book
And as far as they can--overweight to a man!
They have that lean and hungry look
But we still have the magic we've always had! The
descamisados still worship me--we arrived thanks to
them and no-one else; no thanks to your generals--a
clutch of stuffed cuckoos!
PERON
It's not a question of a big parade, proving we're big with
the mobs on the street--
You're wrong--the people, my people--
PERON
The people belong to no-one! They are fickle, can be
manipulated, they don't matter! However much they love
you now it matters more that as far as my stuffed
cuckoos are concerned, you don't politically exist!
So I don't exist! So I count for nothing! Try saying that
on the street when all over the world I am Argentina!
(EVA breaks off for a second--in some pain)
Most of your generals wouldn't be recognized by their
own mothers! But they'll admit I exist when I become
vice-president!
PERON
That won't work... we've been through all of this before,
they'd fight you tooth and nail--you'd never overcome
them with a hundred rallies and even if you did--
Yes?
PERON
Your little body's slowly breaking down
You're losing speed, you're losing strength--not style--
that goes on
Flourishing forever, but your eyes, your smile
Do not have the sparkle of their fantastic past
If you climb one more mountain it could be your last
I'm not that ill--bad moments come but they go
Some days are fine, some a little bit harder
But that doesn't mean
I should change my routine
Have you ever seen
Me defeated?
Don't you forget what I've been through and yet
I'm still standing
And if I am ill--that could even be to your advantage!
PERON
Advantage? I'm trying to point out that you are dying!
This talk of death is chilling--of course you're not going
to die!
Then I must now be vice-president!
And I shall have my people come to choose
Two Perons to wear their country's crowns
In thousands in my squares and avenues
Emptying their villages and towns
Where every soul in home or shack or stall
Knows me as Argentina--that is all
Oh I shall be a great vice-president!
(But EVA collapses in great pain)
PERON
So what happens now?
So what happens now?
Where am I going to?
PERON
R: Miss Giry, I'm not afraid of him. I've bested him before and if he ever had the courage to meet me face to face, man to
man...
No, no it can't be.
P: Not afraid of me, you say?
R: Stay back or I'll kill you, I promise you!
P: Of course. As you say, you've beaten me before, but that was a long time ago, Vicomte. And we were playing a different
game.
Look at you, deep in debt
Stinking drunk - pitiful
Shall we two make a bet?
Devil take he hindmost
R: Look at you, foul as sin
Hideous - horrible
Call the stakes, deal me in
Devil take the hindmost
P: Our Christine shall choose tonight
R: Let her choose
P: Is she yours or mine?
R: Draw the line
P: If she sings you lose tonight
R: I won't lose
P: You leave from here
R: Fine!
P: Disappear
R: Fine! And if she won't, if I win
P: All your debts wiped away
R: Very well, let's begin
Both: Devil take the hindmost
(simultaneously)
R: You think you have the odds
You think you're in control
You think you've fixed the dice
Well I will gladly roll
I'll bet against the house
I'll even double down
P: Our game, it's been changed
Evey throw risking her
All the rules rearranged
Fate has redesigned those
R: Fortune's on my side
I won her long ago, I won her from you then
I beat you even now, I'll win her back again
P: Cut the deck, let us play
Roll your die once again
R: And when the game is done!
P: Either way!
Both: Devil take the hindmost
Now Christine shall choose at last
Is she yours or mine?
R: We've a son - our bond's secure
P: Are you sure?
R: What?
P: Are you so sure?
R: What do you mean?
P: Such a child, strange to see
Different, musical
R: Huh?
P: Is he more you or me?
Which one do you find most?
R: You lie.
(simultaneously)
P: Deal the cards, let them fall
Choose your hand, try your best
He who wins, wins it all
R: I call your bluff - the game is on
And we will see who wins
He who runs it out wins it all
Both: Devil take he hindmost
P: Deal the cards, let them fall
Choose your hand, try your best
He who wins wins it all
R: I call your bluff - the game is on
And we will see who wins out
He who runs it out wins it all
Both: Devil take the hindmost!
P: She walks, you leave together
Pockets full
Debts paid.
She sings - you leave alone.
Devil take the hindmost.
Meg:
Heaven help me, could it be--?
No, it couldn't possibly-
Christine:
Sorry, do I--?
Meg:
Yes, I think you do!
Christine:
Have we--?
Meg:
Go on, take a guess!
Christine:
Wait - it can't be! Is it--?
Meg:
Yes!
Christine:
Oh my god, I can't believe it's you!
Meg:
Look at you, Christine!
Regal as a queen, and beautiful!
Christine:
Meg, and you as well!
I could hardly tell it's you--!
(They embrace.)
Meg and Christine:
My dear old friend!
Can't believe you're here old friend!
Christine:
After all this time!
Meg:
So glad you came!
Christine:
You look... sublime!
Meg:
You look the same!
Meg and Christine:
My sweet old friend,
Never thought we'd meet, old friend!
Christine:
Look at you, a star!
Meg:
And you a wife!
Meg and Christine:
And isn't life a splendid thing?
Christine:
And here we are--
Meg:
Too see the sights!
Christine:
And sing.
Meg (taken aback):
To... sing?
Christine:
And of course as a treat for my son. Meg, meet Gustave...
Meg (ignoring the boy):
Who hired you to sing here?
(Raoul enters and walks, stunned, toward Meg...)
Raoul:
You!
(... and right past her, astonished at another figure who has just appeared.)
Madame Giry (stunned):
It can't be you!
Raoul:
Is this a jest?
Madame Giry:
How can this be?
Raoul:
We've come to work.
Madame Giry:
At whose request?
Raoul (producing an envelope):
The contract's here.
Madame Giry (snatching it from him):
I want to see! (opens, skims)
My god, the price.
Raoul:
It's rather high.
Madame Giry:
Why, it's absurd!
Raoul:
Oh yes, I know.
Inform your boss that,
By the by,
The fee goes up,
Or else we go.
Raoul and Madame Giry:
My dear old friend,
Here's how things appear, old friend-
Madame Giry:
He who pays the bill-
Raoul:
Times two or three.
Madame Giry:
Be sure he will.
Raoul:
And handsomely.
Raoul and Madame Giry:
And dear old friend,
Now that we are clear, old friend-
Madame Giry:
That's all very well,
But 'till you're gone you'll wait upon my boss's whim.
Raoul:
Ah yes, your boss--
And who is that?
Madame Giry:
It's him.
(The focus turns back to Meg and Christine.)
Meg:
Sorry, did I hear you right?
Here to sing?
Christine:
Tomorrow night.
Meg:
I'm afraid there must be some mistake.
You can't be performing.
Christine:
Why?
Meg:
Mainly, dear, 'cause so am I.
I'm in fact the star, for heaven's sake!
What are you to sing?
Christine:
Just one little thing - an aria.
Meg (reeling):
No...
Christine:
Please, you needn't fret,
I'm sure you will get your due...
(Back to Madame Giry and Raoul.)
Raoul:
Him!
Madame Giry:
That's what I said.
Raoul:
You work for him!
Madame Giry:
Now so do you.
Raoul:
And my poor wife--
We thought him dead!
She'll be appalled!
Madame Giry:
Unless she knew.
(Raoul is thunderstruck. He storms over to Christine.)
Christine:
Darling... please... are you all right?
(Raoul seizes her roughly.)
Raoul:
Tell me now! That music!
Who was its creator?
Christine:
Darling, please... don't squeeze so tight.
Raoul:
Something's going on here--
I'll deal with you later...
(As they confer, Meg and Madame Giry have their own whispered colloquy.)
Meg (sotto voice):
Did you know?
Madame Giry (sotto voice):
How could I know?
Why would they come?
Meg (sotto voice):
Why won't they go?
(All four catch each others' eyes and immediately regain their social graces.)
Meg and Madame Giry:
My dear old friends!
Can't believe you're here, old friends!
Christine and Raoul (simultaneously with Meg and Madame Giry):
Dear old friends!
Such good friends!
Madame Giry:
Speaking as your host-
Meg:
As an artiste-
Christine:
What a surprise-
Raoul:
To say the least-
All four:
Yes, dear old friend,
That's a happy tear, old friend!
I can't conceal,
Try though I may,
The way I feel,
So why pretend?
I'm sure it's clear, to such a dear old friend!
Madame Giry (sotto voice to Christine):
You mustn't stay!
Christine (sotto voice to Madame Giry):
Why would I leave?
Raoul (sotto voice to Meg):
Why are we here?
Meg (sotto voice to Raoul):
Don't play naive!
All four:
What dear old friends!
Don't we all revere old friends!
Raoul:
Nothing has been changed.
Meg:
And never will.
Madame Giry and Christine:
Just rearranged.
All four:
And yet we're still such grand old friends,
Such devoted and old friends!
Words could not suggest what's in my heart--
And for the rest?
Why even start?
You're dear old friends (dear old friends!),
So much more thean mere old friends! (such true friends!)
Old friends back again at last (back again),
With everyone (everyone),
Isn't this great! (god it's great!)
Won't this be fun! (so much fun!)
With dear old friends--
Utterly sincere old friends!
Meg (to Christine, smiling, with venom):
Honey, break a leg.
Raoul (overly polite, to Madame Giry):
Madame, good day.
Madame Giry (pointedly to Raoul):
Enjoy your stay.
Christine (with too much charm):
Hope it extends.
All four:
So glad you're here our lovely dear old friends!
JUDAS
Now if I help you, it matters that you see
These sordid kinda things are coming hard to me.
It's taken me some time to work out what to do.
I weighed the whole thing out before I came to you.
I have no thought at all about my own reward.
I really didn't come here of my own accord.
Just don't say I'm ...
Damned for all time.
I came because I had to; I'm the one who saw.
Jesus can't control it like he did before.
And furthermore I know that Jesus thinks so too.
Jesus wouldn't mind that I was here with you.
I have no thought at all about my own reward.
I really didn't come here of my own accord.
Just don't say I'm ...
Damned for all time.
Annas, you're a friend, a worldly man and wise.
Caiaphas, my friend, I know you sympathise.
Why are we the prophets? Why are we the ones
Who see the sad solution - know what must be done?
I have no thought at all about my own reward.
I really didn't come here of my own accord.
Just don't say I'm
JESUS
God forgive them--they don't know what they're doing
Who is my mother? Where is my mother?
My God My God why have you forgotten me?
I am thirsty
It is finished
I've been living to see you,
Dying to see you but it shouldn't be like this.
This was unexpected, what do I do now?
Could we start again please?
Could we start again please?
I've been hopeful so far,
Now for the first time I think we're going wrong.
Hurry up and tell me, this is all a dream
Or could we start again please?
Could we start again please?
I think you've made your point now.
You've even gone a bit too far to get your message home.
Before it gets too frightening, we ought to call a halt.
So could we start again please?
Could we start again please?
I've been living to see you,
Dying to see you but it shouldn't be like this.
This was un expected, what do I do now?
Could we start again please?
Could we start again please?
I think you've made your point now
You've even gone a bit too far to get your message home.
Before it gets too frightening, we ought to call a halt.
So could we start again please?
So could we start again please?
So could we start again please?
So could we start again please?
I will see you in a week or two... It's late, you better get going. Take care of yourself and call anytime, you feel, that you're missing me! I can only say what I always say at these good-byes: Come back with the same look in your eyes!
I know, you've got your work to do and I know how much you love me. But sometimes a friendly face can look good to you on a lonely night... If there comes a time, just remember, I'm the kind that cries: Come back with the same look in your eyes!
Everything, we want, we find in each other. We would be fools to let love slip away. Everything's so right, I'm scared that we might lose it one day. We could never keep things from one another, you know all the feelings that are in my heart. It's not easy, it'S not easy when you have to be apart.
Close every door to me, hide all the world from me
Bar all the windows and shut out the light
Do what you want with me, hate me and laugh at me
Darken my daytime and torture my night
If my life were important
I would ask, "Will I live or die?"
But I know the answers lie far from this world
Close every door to me, keep those I love from me
Children of Israel are never alone
For I know I shall find my own peace of mind
For I have been promised a land of my own
Close every door to me, hide all the world from me
Bar all the windows and shut out the light
La la la la la la
La la la la la la
Just give me a number instead of my name
Forget all about me and let me decay
I do not matter, I'm only one person
Destroy me completely then throw me away
If my life were important
I would ask, "Will I live or die?"
But I know the answers lie far from this world
Close every door to me keep those I love from me
Children of Israel are never alone
For we know we shall find our own peace of mind
Bustopher Jones is not skin and bones
In fact, he's remarkably fat
He doesn't haunt pubs, he has eight or nine clubs
For he's the St. James Street cat!
He's the cat we all greet as we walk down the street
In his coat of fastidious black
No common-place mousers have such well cut trousers
Or such an impeccable back
In the whole of St. James's the smartest of names is
The name of this Brummell of cats
And we're all of us proud to be nodded or bowed to
By Bustopher Jones in white spats
My visits are occasional to the senior educational
And it is against the rules
For any one cat to belong both to that
And the joint superior schools
When I'm seen in a hurry there's probably curry
At the Siamese or at the glutton
When I look full of gloom then
I've lunched at the tomb
On cabbage, rice pudding and mutton
In the whole of St. James's the smartest of names is
The name of this Brummell of cats
And we're all of us proud to be nodded or bowed to
By Bustopher Jones in white spats
So much in this way passes Bustopher's day
At one club or another he's found
It can be no surprise that under our eyes
He has grown unmistakably round
He's a twenty-five pounder or I am a bounder
And he's putting on weight every day
But I'm so well preserved because I've observed
All my life a routine and I'd say
I am still in my prime, I shall last out my time
That's the word from this stoutest of cats
It must and it shall be spring in Pall Mall
While Bustopher Jones wears white
Bustopher Jones wears white
EVA:
What's new Buenos Aires?
I'm new--I want to say I'm just a little stuck on you
You'll be on me too!
I get out here Buenos Aires
Stand back--you ought to know what'cha gonna get in me
Just a little touch of star quality!
Fill me up with your heat, with your noise, with your dirt, overdo me
Let me dance to your beat, make it loud. let it hurt, run it through me
Don't hold back you are certain to impress
Tell the driver this is where I'm staying
Hello Buenos Aires!
Get this--just look at me, dressed up somewhere to go
We'll put on a show!
Take me in at your flood, give me speed, give me lights, set me humming
Shoot me up with your blood, wine me up with your nights, watch me coming
All I want is a whole lot of excess
Tell the singer this is where I'm playing
Stand back Buenos Aires!
Because you ought to know what'cha gonna get in me
Just a little touch of star quality!
And if ever I go too far
It's because of the things you are
Beautiful town--I love you
And if I need a moment's rest
Give your lover the very best
Real eiderdown--and silence
On the 9th February 1935, in Buenos Aires--a polo
match, between a team of leading Argentine players and
the touring British side. The British ambassador said he
had never seen a social occasion quite like it. Even by the
standards of Buenos Aires society the gathering at the
polo ground glittered. The Rolls' and the Daimlers, the
hampers from Harrod's, the clothes, the diamonds, the
crystal, the wines, the procession of nannies from
England and France. The result of the match? Oh yes--
the home team won, but as the British ambassador
pointed out, that did not reflect badly on British
horsemanship. Three of the Argentine players were
educated at Eton.
You're a tramp, you're a treat, you will shine to the death, you are shoddy
But you're flesh, you are meat, you shall have every breath in my body
Put me down for a lifetime of success
Give me credit--I'll find ways of paying
Rio de la Plata! Florida! Corrientes! Nueve de Julio!
All I want to know!
Stand back Buenos Aires!
Because you oughta know what'cha gonna get in me
Just a little touch of
Just a little touch of
(Annas)
Cut the protesting
Forget the excuses
We want information
Get up off the floor
(Caiaphas)
We have the papers
We need to arrest him
You know his movements
We know the law
(Annas)
Your help in this matter
Won't go unrewarded
(Caiaphas)
We'll pay you in silver
Cash on the nail
We just need to know
Where the soldiers can find him
With no crowd around him
Then we can't fail
(Judas)
I don't need your blood money
(Caiaphas)
Oh, that doesn't matter
Our expenses are good
(Judas)
I don't want your blood money
(Annas)
But you might as well take it
We think that you should
(Caiaphas)
Think of the things
You can do with that money
Choose any charity
Give to the poor
We've noted your motives
We've noted your feelings
This isn't blood money
It's a fee nothing more
(Judas)
On Thursday night
You'll find him where you want him
Far from the crowds
In the garden of Gethesmene
(Chorus)
Well done Judas
Oh, no, not he
How you can accuse him is a mystery?
Save him, take me
Benjamin is straighter than the tall palm tree
I hear the steel drums sing their song
They're singing man you know you've got it wrong
I hear the voice of the yellow bird
Singing in the tree it is quite absurd
Oh, yes, it's true
Benjamin is straighter than the big bamboo
No ifs, no buts
Benjamin is honest as coconuts
Sure as the tide wash the golden sand
Benjamin is an innocent man
Sure as bananas need the sun
We are the criminal guilty ones
Oh, no, not he
How you can accuse him is a mystery?
Save him, take me
Benjamin is straighter than the tall palm tree
La la, la la, la la, la la
Oh, no, not he
How you can accuse him is a mystery?
Save him, take me
Benjamin is straighter than the tall palm tree
Sure as the tide wash the golden sand
Benjamin is an innocent man
Sure as bananas need the sun
We are the criminal guilty ones
Oh, no, not he
How you can accuse him is a mystery?
Save him, take me
Benjamin is straighter than the tall palm tree
Oh no, not he
How you can accuse him is a mystery?
Save him, take me
GUSTAVE:
Ooh. Ooh. Ooh. Ooh.
(Continues tune over Christine)
CHRISTINE:
(Spoken)
Gustave? Could you hand me those earrings? The diamond ones on the left. There. How do I look?
GUSTAVE:
(Singing)
You look so beautiful.
So very beautiful.
Like a Queen in a book.
CHRISTINE:
You, too, are beautiful.
So very beautiful.
Once this performance is through,
We’ll spend some time just us two.
Won’t that be fun?
GUSTAVE:
(Spoken)
Father, doesn’t mother look lovely tonight?
RAOUL:
Indeed she does. As lovely as she looked the very first time I came to her dressing room door.
CHRISTINE:
And look at you, Raoul. You look just like that handsome boy in the opera box. The one who had always tossed me a single red rose.
RAOUL:
(Singing)
Please, Gustave,
If you don’t mind,
Would you wait outside a while?
GUSTAVE:
(Spoken)
May I go exploring? By myself?
CHRISTINE:
(Singing)
Yes, but stay backstage, my dear.
When I’m finished meet me here.
GUSTAVE:
(Spoken)
I will.
RAOUL:
(Singing)
Since our wedding day
things have gone astray.
I’m not proud of the way I have acted.
CHRISTINE:
(Spoken)
We’ve both been-
RAOUL:
(Singing)
The demands I’ve made,
all the hopes mislaid,
I’m aware of the price they’ve exacted.
Thought I’ve no right to ask you to,
There’s one thing more I’d have you do
If you love me as I love you.
CHIRSTINE:
(Spoken)
Anything darling.
RAOUL:
(Singing)
Don’t sing the song, dear.
CHRISTINE:
(Spoken)
What? But, Raoul-
RAOUL:
(Singing)
You have to know something’s terribly wrong, dear.
CHRISTINE:
But I have to do this.
It’s what we agreed to.
RAOUL:
That hell spawned demon,
He’s had us playing his game all along, dear.
CHRISTINE:
Let me just get through this.
Listen, please.
(Spoken)
I need to.
RAOUL:
You need so much, it’s true, and
I’ve denied you.
You need the man you knew
Back here beside you.
You’ll have him back, I vow.
Just ask it of me.
But we must leave here now
If you still love me.
CHRISTINE:
(Spoken)
Do you mean it, Raoul? Truly?
RAOUL:
I’ve booked a passage for three to Cher Borge on the Atlantic Queen. It leaves in an hour. We’ll have just enough time. Now, I beg you let’s be on it for both our sakes, and the child’s.
(Singing)
Leave this place behind.
THE PHANTOM:
He knows his love is not enough.
He knows he isn’t what you need.
He knows you’re made of finder stuff,
I think on that we’re all agreed.
It’s time to leave him in the dust!
It’s time to be who you should be!
It’s time to do now as you must
And set the music in you free!
In moments, mere moment, drums will roar.
There you’ll stand just like before.
The crowd will hush,
And then in one sweet rush
I will hear you sing once more.
And music, our music, will swell, and then unwind
Like two strand of melody at last entwined!
Fulfill us,
Complete us,
Make us whole!
Seal our bond forever more!
Tonight, for me
Embrace your destiny!
Let me hear you sing once more!
STAGE HAND:
(Spoken)
Mrs. Daaé? It’s time.
CHRISTINE:
(Singing)
Twisted every way
What answer can I give?
I know I can’t refuse, and yet
I wish I could.
Oh, god!
RAOUL:
Christine, Christine, don’t think
That I don’t care,
THE PHANTOM:
But every hope
Gustave: Who are you?
Where are you taking me?
Fleck: I am Miss Fleck.
Squelch: The Mighty Squelch.
Gangle: Dr. Gangle.
Trio: At your service.
Fleck: And his.
Gangle: Come along and follow us.
Fleck: Come and follow faster.
Squelch: Come along and follow us.
Trio: Come and meet the master.
Hurry up
And follow us
Hurry if you care to
Soon the dark
Will swallow us
Follow if you dare to
Gustave: Is this is where Mr. Y lives?
Gangle: This is where he works.
Fleck: Step lively child.
Squelch: He is waiting.
Gustave: What is this place?
Phantom: This is my realm
Illusion's domain
Where music and beauty
And art have faced rain
Go, look around while I finish my work.
Gustave: May I?
Phantom: What's this?
Gustave: Just a song
In my head
Phantom: Go on.
Gustave: I think it's beautiful.
Beautiful, beautiful notes.
Beautiful, beautiful sounds.
Don't you agree?
It's beautiful
Phantom: This boy.
Gustave: So very beautiful.
Phantom: This music.
Gustave: Music that calms and controls.
Phantom: He plays like me.
Gustave: Haunting, and lovely, and bold
Phantom: He just ten years old.
Ten years old.
My God
(Squelch) ladies and gentlemen Mr. Y is pleased to present to you his final surprise of the season

(Meg) HELLO!
(applause)
(Gangle) Lady and gentlemen Meg Giry the Oh Lala Girl!
I dont know why I'm frightened
I know my way around here
The cardboard trees, the painted seas, the sound here
Yes, a world to rediscover,
But I'm not in any hurry,
And I need a moment.
The whispered conversations
In overcrowded hallways.
The atmosphere as thrilling here as always.
Feel the early morning madness,
Feel the magic in the making,
Why, everythings as if we never said goodbye.
I've spent so many mornings
Just trying to resist you.
I'm trembling now, you cant know how I've missed you.
Missed the fairy tale adventures
In this ever spinning playground.
We were young together.
I'm coming out of makeup,
The lights already burning.
Not long until the cameras will start turning.
And the early morning madness,
And the magic in the making,
Yes, everythings as if we never said goodbye.
I dont want to be alone,
That's all in the past.
This world's waited long enough,
I've come home at last.
And this time will be bigger
And brighter than we knew it.
So watch me fly, we all know I can do it.
Could I stop my hand from shaking,
Has there ever been a moment
With so much to live for?
The whispered conversations
In overcrowded hallways.
So much to say, not just today, but always.
We'll have early morning madness,
We'll have magic in the making,
Yes, everythings as if we never said goodbye.
ROSE:
Anything but lonely,
Anything but empty rooms.
There's so much in life to share --
What's the sense when no one else is there?
Anything but lonely,
Anything but only me.
Quiet years in too much space:
That's the thing that's hard to face,
And...
You have a right to go,
But you should also know
That I won't be alone for long.
Long days with nothing said
Are not what lie ahead --
I'm sorry, but I'm not that strong.
Anything but lonely,
Anything but passing time.
Lonely's what I'll never be,
While there's still some life in me,
And...
I'm still young, don't forget,
It isn't over yet --
So many hearts for me to thrill.
If you're not here to say
How good I look each day,
I'll have to find someone who will.
Anything but lonely,
Anything but empty rooms.
There's so much in life to share --
What's the sense when no one else is
there...?
Just promise one thing.
ALEX:
All right.
What is it?
ROSE:
Don't ask me questions...
You must promise first...
ALEX:
I can't
I must know what it is.
ROSE:
I closed my eyes, drew back the curtain
To see for certain what I thought I knew
Far far away, someone was weeping
But the world was sleeping
Any dream will do
I wore my coat, with golden lining
Bright colors shining, wonderful and new
And in the east, the dawn was breaking
And the world was waking
Any dream will do
A crash of drums, a flash of light
My golden coat flew out of sight
The colors faded into darkness
I was left alone
May I return to the beginning
The light is dimming, and the dream is too
The world and I, we are still waiting
Still hesitating
(Andrew Lloyd Webber - Tim Rice)
CAIAPHAS
We've been sitting on the fence for far too long.
ANNAS
Why let him upset us? Caiaphas, let him be.
All those imbeciles will see he really doesn't matter.
CAIAPHAS
But Jesus is important! We've let him go his way before.
And while he starts a major war, we theorize and chatter.
ANNAS
He's just another scripture thumping hack from Galilee.
CAIAPHAS
The difference is they call him King. The difference frightens me.
What about the Roman's? When they see Jesus crowned
Do you think they'll stand around cheering and applauding?
What about our people? If they see we've lost our nerve,
Don't you think that they deserve something more rewarding?
ANNAS
They've got what they want. They think so anyway.
If he's what they want, why take their toy away?
CAIAPHAS
Put yourself in my place.
I cannot let my hands be tied. I am law and order.
What about our priesthood? Don't you see that we could fall?
If we are to last at all, we cannot be divided.
ANNAS
Then say so to the council, but don't rely on subtlety.
Frighten them, or they won't see.
CAIAPHAS
Then we are decided?
ANNAS
Then we are decided.
And the money kept rolling in from every side
Eva's pretty hands reached out and they reached wide
Now, you may feel it should have been a voluntary cause
But that's not the point my friends
When the money keeps rolling in, you don't ask how
Think of all the people guaranteed a good time now
Eva's called the hungry to her, open up the doors
Never been a fund like the foundation Eva Peron
Rollin' rollin' rollin', rollin' rollin' rollin'
Rollin' rollin' rollin', rollin' rollin' rollin'
Rollin' rollin' rollin', rollin' rollin' rollin'
Rollin' rollin' rollin', rollin' rollin' rollin'
Rollin' on in, rollin' on in
Rollin' on in, rollin' on in
On in
Would you like to try a college education?
Own your landlord's house, take the family on vacation?
Eva and her blessed fund can make your dreams come true
Here's all you have to do my friends
Write your name and your dream on a card or a pad or a ticket
Throw it high in the air and should our lady pick it
She will change your way of life for a week or even two
Name me anyone who cares as much as Eva Peron
Rollin' rollin' rollin', rollin' rollin' rollin'
Rollin' rollin' rollin', rollin' rollin' rollin'
Rollin' rollin' rollin', rollin' rollin' rollin'
Rollin' rollin' rollin', rollin' rollin' rollin'
Rollin' on out, rollin' on out
Rollin' on out, rollin' on out
On out
And the money kept rolling out in all directions
To the poor, to the weak, to the destitute of all complexions
Now, cynics claim a little of the cash has gone astray
But that's not the point my friends
When the money keeps rolling out you don't keep books
You can tell you've done well by the happy grateful looks
Accountants only slow things down, figures get in the way
Never been a lady loved as much as Eva Peron
Rollin' rollin' rollin', rollin' rollin' rollin'
Rollin' rollin' rollin', rollin' rollin' rollin'
Rollin' rollin' rollin', rollin' rollin' rollin'
Rollin' rollin' rollin', rollin' rollin' rollin'
Rollin' on out, rollin' on out
Rollin' on out, rollin' on out
On out, Eva
When the money keeps rolling out, you don't keep books
You can tell you've done well by the happy grateful looks
Accountants only slow things down, figures get in the way
Never been a lady loved as much as Eva Peron
Rollin' rollin' rollin', rollin' rollin' rollin'

Rollin' rollin' rollin', rollin' rollin' rollin'
Rollin' rollin' rollin', rollin' rollin' rollin'
Rollin' on out, rollin' on out
Rollin' on out, rollin' on out
Rollin' on out, rollin' on out

No more talk of darkness, forget these wide-eyed fears
I'm here, nothing can harm you my words will warm and calm you
Let me be your freedom, let daylight dry your tears
I'm here with you, beside you to guard you and to guide you
Say you love me every waking moment
Turn my head with talk of summertime
Say you need me with you, now and always
Promise me that all you say is true
That's all I ask of you
Let me be your shelter, let me be your light
You're safe, no one will find you, your fears are far behind you
All I want is freedom, a world with no more night
And you always beside me, to hold me and to hide me
Then say you'll share with me one love, one lifetime
Let me lead you from your solitude
Say you need me with you, here beside you
Anywhere you go, let me go too
Christine, that's all I ask of you
Say you'll share with me one love, one lifetime
Say the word and I will follow you
Share each day with me, each night, each morning
Say you love me, you know I do
Love me, that's all I ask of you
Anywhere you go, let me go too

[Workers:]
A new Argentina, the chains of the masses untied
A new Argentina, the voice of the people
Cannot be denied
[Eva:]
There is only one man who can lead any workers' regime
He lives for your problems, he shares your ideals and your dream
He supports you, for he loves you
Understands you, is one of you
If not, how could he love me?
[Workers:]
A new Argentina, the workers' battle song
A new Argentina, the voice of the people
Rings out loud and long
[Eva:]
Now I am a worker, I've suffered the way that you do
I've been unemployed, and I've starved and I've hated it too
But I found my salvation in Peron, may the nation
Let him save them as he saved me
[All:]
A new Argentina, a new age about to begin
A new Argentina, we face the world together
And no dissent within
[Peron:]
There again we could be foolish not to quit while we're ahead
I can see us many miles away, inactive
Sipping cocktails on a terrace, taking breakfast in bed
Sleeping easy, doing nothing, it's attractive
[Eva:]
Don't think I don't think like you
I often get those nightmares too
They always take some swallowing
Sometimes it's very difficult to keep momentum
If it's you that you are following
Don't close doors, keep an escape clause
Because we might lose the Big Apple
But would I have done what I did
If I hadn't thought, if I hadn't known
We would take the country
[Eva:]
Peron has resigned from the army and this we avow
The descamisados are those he is marching with now
He supports you, for he loves you
Understands you, is one of you
If not, how could he love me?
[All:]
A new Argentina, the chains of the masses untied
A new Argentina, the voice of the people
Cannot be, and must not be denied
[Che:]
How annoying that they have to fight elections for their cause
The inconvenience, having to get a majority
If normal methods of persuasion fail to win them applause
There are other ways of establishing authority
[All:]
A new Argentina, the chains of the masses untied
A new Argentina, the voice of the people
Hurry up!
You won't believe it
Take a look what's over here!
Who imagined just how big the place would be
The man called Mr Y put it up in just a year
It's a little slice of heaven by the sea
Look, there's restaurants
A medway
A gigantic concert hall
The biggest fun house ever seen
A volcano that erupts each day at three
Wonders brought from round the world
The season's just begun and Mr Y has got it all
Crystal fountains, grand pavilions
Hell, it hust have cost him millions
It's a little slice of heaven by the sea
Over here!
The sights, the sounds
The lights, the smells
The wonder wheels, the carousels
The gardens and arcades
The marble collonades
The rides (the rides), the shows (the shows)
The game of seek and chance
The rush (the rush), the whirl (the whirl)
The sheer (the sheer) romance
And the rumours
What about 'em
Things so odd you daren't doubt 'em
Freaks and monsters, abhorrations
With mechanical creations
And the genius who designed it wears a mask
A mask, a mask
But what's behind it?
What's behind it?
What's behind it?
What's behind it?
What's behind it?
(instrumental)
Fancy ballrooms
Altered spaces
Shoot the shoots and
Steeple chases
A casino, a museum
Look, a Roman Coliseum
And a concert hall that's bigger than the Met
What's inside it?
What's inside it?
What's inside it?
