The Creativity Code - Marcus du Sautoy
Oxford Mathematics Public Lectures: Marcus du Sautoy - The Creativity Code: How AI is learning to write, paint and think.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a great asset. Artificial Intelligence is a threat to our freedom. Much of the debate around AI seems to focus on these two positions along with a third argument, namely AI could never replicate our creativity or capture what makes us human. We will never go to galleries to look at AI paintings or read AI poetry.
Or perhaps we might? In this fascinating and provocative lecture, Marcus du Sautoy both tests our ability to distinguish between human and machine creativity, and suggests that our creativity may even benefit from that of the machines.

The paradox at the heart of mathematics: Gödel's Incompleteness Theorem - Marcus du Sautoy
Explore Gödel’s Incompleteness Theorem, a discovery which changed what we know about mathematical proofs and statements.
--
Consider the following sentence: “This statement is false.” Is that true? If so, that would make the statement false. But if it’s false, then the statement is true. This sentence creates an unsolvable paradox; if it’s not true and it’s not false– what is it? This question led a logician to a discovery that would change mathematics forever. Marcus du Sautoy digs into Gödel’s Incompleteness Theorem.

Marcus du Sautoy | The Creative Code to Thinking Better | Talks at Google
Marcus du Sautoy discusses his books "The Creativity Code" and "Thinking Better: The Art of the Shortcut in Math and Life".
Will a machine ever compose a symphony, write a prize-winning novel, or paint a masterpiece? And if so, would we be able to tell the difference? Based on his book The Creativity Code, Marcus du Sautoy explores the new developments in AI that are shaking up the status quo and asks how long it might be before machines come up with something creative, and whether they might jolt us into being more imaginative in turn. In his follow-up book Thinking Better he considers the one skill that humans might have over AI: our laziness! Instead of hard work humans are very good at finding the shortcut to solve a problem. The Secret Mathematicians: Jorge Luis Borges - Marcus Du Sautoy
Marcus Du Sautoy investigates the writings of Argentine master, Jorge Luis Borges, seeking its mathematical underpinnings. Looking both at the life of the man and his texts, specifically ‘The Library of Babel’ Professor Du Sautoy shows how this singular author has found a way to describe the shape of an infinite universe that eerily mirrors the thinking of modern mathematicians.
This is a short extract from a Gresham Lecture. You can enjoy the lecture in full on our website: http://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/the-secret-mathematicians
Marcus Du Sautoy OBE is the Simonyi Professor for the Public Understanding of Science and a Professor of Mathematics at the University of Oxford and he’s interested in how Maths and the Arts work together and how similar processes underlie them.

And often the shortcut is mathematical.
Marcus du Sautoy is the Simonyi Professor for the Public Understanding of Science and Professor of Mathematics at the University of Oxford. He is author of seven books and two plays including I is a Strange Loop (Faber 2021) which was performed at the Barbican in London in which he was also lead actor. He has presented numerous radio and TV series including a four part landmark TV series for the BBC called The Story of Maths. He works extensively with a range of arts organizations bringing science alive for the public from The Royal Opera House to the Glastonbury Festival. He received an OBE for services to science in the 2010 New Year’s Honors List and was made a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2016.

Marcus du Sautoy is the Charles Simonyi Professor for the Public Understanding of Science at the Oxford University, a chair he holds jointly at the Department of Continuing Education and the Mathematical Institute. He is also a Professor of Mathematics and a Fellow of New College. He was made a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2016.
This talk was filmed on 8 November 2021.

Gresham College has offered free public lectures for over 400 years, thanks to the generosity of our supporters. There are currently over 2,500 lectures free to access. Join Marcus as he takes us on a mathematical journey across the centuries and through countries, continents and cultures in search of the games we love to play. Based on his new book, he looks at the way mathematics has always been deeply intertwined with games and investigates how games themselves can provide us with opportunities for mathematical insight into the world.
From backgammon to chess, Catan to Snakes and Ladders, games are not simply an enjoyable diversion. They are rather the height of human ingenuity. Ours is the species that loves playing games: not homo sapiens but homo ludens. The lecture is suitable for everyone ‘from age 8 to 108.’ Come and join Marcus on his journey Around the World in 80 Games. You simply can’t lose…

China's Society Boiling with Resentment: Everyone Privately Curses the CCP Leader
The main content of the program:
0:00 Intro
1:23 The whole world is turning against China: Russia imposes 55% tariffs, Thailand restricts Chinese investors, Mexico shuts down trade centers, and Indonesia bans Chinese goods sales.
6:03 Leading companies conduct massive year-end layoffs, with no orders, factories close early, workers return to their hometowns, and there’s no money to celebrate the New Year.
10:12 Chinese people caught stealing on a plane. The uncivilized behavior of Chinese tourists abroad is frequently exposed. Why have they become like this?

15:40 Even sanitary pads are counterfeited and filled with harmful substances: made with cockroach legs, insect eggs, and cigarette filters; down jackets filled with pig and dog hair. Is there anything left in China that is real and safe?
20:32 China's Shoddy Construction Projects Resurface: Traps Everywhere. No one dares to stand up for justice and reveal the truth.
25:53 China's Society Boiling with Resentment: Everyone Privately Curses the CCP Leader. Nine Key Reasons for Xi's Declining Reputation.
