Mt. Lukens & Back on a Falcon!
1-30-2010 - Sylmar Falcon League milestone flight to Mt. Lukens and back on a Wills Wing Falcon 3 195. A demonstration of the XC capability of the Falcon, entry level hang glider. Moderate conditions with a low ceiling. Of 40 pilots who flew, a Litespeed RS4 was the only other glider to make the same out and back flight. Jason on his Falcon 230 tandem had a shot at completing the trip too with his amazing low saves. Full res version: vimeo.com

Feb 20, 2011 Mt. Lukens
Feb 20, 2011 Mt. Lukens
Feb 20, 2011 continues the snowy tradition of Feb 20, 2008 3 years earlier showing 5050 ft. MT. Lukens highest point in Los Angeles. Looking northeast from my street. The previous evening we got a few snowflakes here at 1950 feet but it did not accumulate here but it did 800 feet higher. Mt. Lukens is the only area within the city of Los Angeles that actually gets measureable snowfall on a mean annual basis. Even this very dry season it managed to get some measureable snowfall on Dec 12, 2011 the same day I did my Christmas video near Mt. Wilson. The song playing is Green Onions.

Mar 7, 2012 Mt. Lukens, A study in contrasts
Mar 7, 2012 Mt. Lukens, A study in contrasts
Since Mt. Lukens 5050 ft. above sea level has installed an automated weather station a couple of weeks ago I have been fascinated by the changes in temperature and relative humidity up there compared with my weather station down here a 1950 feet. Yesterday just after midnight it was 52 degrees down here in Tujunga and 53 degrees on the summit of Mt. Lukens. That was a stable atmosphere with temperature increasing upward and it resists vertical motions. But last night the cold air aloft arrived making it an unstable atmosphere with lots of vertical motions. Up there by the antennas on the mountaintop an automated weather station reported a wind chill of 4.5 degrees above zero which is incredible for a place located in the city of Los Angeles and the actual air temperature was 24 degree with 41 mph winds. Down here our lowest wind chill was 31 degrees with a minimum temperature of 39 degrees. It is cool and windy now but by The Day After Tommorrow ( Friday ) LOL no pun intended on that science fiction weather movie it will be quite warm here. The music is Lazy Day.

Mar 11, 2011 Mt.. Lukens up above in dry air
Mar 11, 2011 Mt.. Lukens up above in dry air
This video shows MT. Lukens a little warmer and much drier than us down below. Just last week the summit had windchills down in the single digits while today it is more docile with an automated station on the 5050 ft summit reporting 50 degrees and dry humidty in the teens while down here my weather station just short of 2000 ft is reporting the upper 40s and humiditya moist 89 per cent this morning when the photo was taken before 9 am with stable moist marine air about 3000 feet deep with the summit at 5050 feet well up into the clear dry air above. Also it was partly cloudy with relatively thin stratus clouds. The clouds have cleared but it is much cooler and higher humidity than yesterday .Music is Lazy Day.

Mar 18, 2012 Mt. Lukens from my street.
What looks like a finger( No, I am not that LOL kind of person ) in parts of this video is really a weed out of focus in telephoto mode which I did not catch when I videotaped it but when I go to wide angle it confirms that is a weed reed and not my finger rocking to the music. The snow that fell last night and late yesterday afternoon on 5050 ft. Mt. Lukens. Remember that Mt. Lukens is the highest point in the city of Los Angeles and today it is far colder than Minnesota and has more snow on its long hogback ridge than the entire state of Minnesota. Music is Green Onions.

Feb 28 2012 Snow on 5050 ft. Mt. Lukens
Feb 28 2012 Snow on 5050 ft. Mt. Lukens
Snow down to about the 4500 foot level on 5050 ft .Mt. Lukens in another dud of a storm which has dominated Feb.Mt. Lukens is the highest point in the city of Los Angeles and is the only part of the city that has measureable snowfall on an annual basis. I don't know what the annual average is up there but every year as far as I remember some snow has fallen up there. At the base of the peak the mean annual snowfall here in Tujunga is almost negligible and measureable snow occurs about once a decade so you see why I go on snowstorm chases. But it did a year ago almost exactly a year ago on nearly the same date which you can see from my anniversary photos. In downtown Los Angeles the snow situation is even more dismal , The last measureable snowfall downtown was in Jan 1949 before many of us were even born.Music is You Only Live Twice.from the James Bond movie.
