Southerndown
Southerndown, South Wales. Flight at the abandoned carehome for the blind & elderly.
Southerndown Care Home was built in the 1890 and was originally known as “The Dunraven Hotel”. This was demolished in 1890 to cater for a higher class of visitor, running a horse brake service to and from Southerndown Road Station at Castle-upon-Alun.
Since the 1940’s it has been occupied as a convalescence and care home for the blind. The building was constructed in the style of a castle with accommodation on three floors with attic accommodation above.
On 5th June 1948 the Wales Council for the blind opened the premises as Southerndown Care Home for the Blind and Elderly, originally offering holidays for people with visual impairment.

Dunraven Bay & Southerndown to Nash Point - South Wales | Harry's Hikes
This a beautiful hike along the coast from Dunraven Bay (also known as Southerndown) to Nash Point. It involves both a clifftop walk and a beach walk as well as little woodland and a small castle.
There is free parking on the main road before heading down to the carpark where parking costs £5 on the sea front. I have rated this hike Easy/Moderate purely due to the length of the hike, otherwise it's fairly easy.
Walk down to Southerndown /Dunraven Bay and admire the view of the bay as you approach the beach. Head towards Dunraven Castle and explore the grounds before escaping over the walls and popping out on the other side of the bay. From there you can follow the cliff edge where you will get various views of the coast and just be able to see Nash Point far in the distance. Keep follow...

From there you can follow the cliff edge where you will get various views of the coast and just be able to see Nash Point far in the distance. Keep following the cliff top walk where you will come down to a small stream where you will then go back up the cliff on the other side and continue towards Nash Point. Once you get to Nash Point you can carry on to the Lighthouse and Foghorn. On returning instead of going back up, you can take the beach walk (providing the tide is out, very important to check tide times) and walk all the way back. You will get to a point to where you cannot go any further as the sea will block the beach to Dunraven Bay. There is a small path that you can follow up which meanders through some bushes where you will come out to reveal the walk you have just made, and Dunraven bay on the other side.
Enjoy and please subscribe and give your feedback which will be much appreciated.
