Il 25 luglio 1909 inizia a Barcellona La Semana tragica , sette giorni di violenze e morte nelle strade in seguito allo sciopero generale indetto da comunisti e anarchici in protesta contro l' invio di truppe di riservisti in Marocco a combattere la guerra coloniale. Lo sciopero si trasforma in rivolta , si erigono barricate , vengono attaccate chiese e conventi , i morti sono decine . Dopo una settimana l' esercito riesce a riprendere in controllo della città. Il pedagogo libertario e anti-clericale Francisco Ferrer, accusato di aver ispirato la rivolta, viene fucilato .

Homenaje a Cataluña (en inglés Homage to Catalonia)
Es el relato personal de George Orwell sobre su experiencia durante la Guerra Civil española, escrito en primera persona. La primera edición fue publicada en 1938. Orwell sirvió tanto como soldado raso y como oficial en partes de Cataluña y Aragón desde diciembre de 1936 hasta junio de 1937, cuando tras los sucesos de mayo de 1937, el partido político en el que se encontraba (el POUM, un partido comunista antiestalinista dirigido por Andreu Nin) fue declarado organización ilegal y se vio forzado a huir o enfrentarse al encarcelamiento.
Orwell estuvo como miliciano del POUM en Cataluña desde el 26 de diciembre de 1936 hasta el 23 de junio de 1937, durante la Guerra Civil, y muestra la represión de la que fueron objeto los militantes del POUM por parte de los sectores estalinistas del gobierno republicano.
En ella, Orwell narra su llegada a una Barcelona que bulle en los últimos días de 1936 en la revolución libertaria, expresando su admiración por la misma en largos párrafos de su texto, con el fin de integrarse a una unidad combatiente del POUM y evitar integrarse como miliciano en las Brigadas Internacionales (con cuyo liderazgo mayormente comunista no simpatizaba Orwell).
Homage to Catalonia is George Orwell's personal account of his experiences and observations in the Spanish Civil War. The first edition was published in the United Kingdom in 1938. The book was not published in the United States until February 1952, when it appeared with an influential preface by Lionel Trilling. The only translation published in Orwell's lifetime was into Italian, in December 1948. A French translation by Yvonne Davet—with whom Orwell corresponded, commenting on her translation and providing explanatory notes—in 1938–39 was not published until five years after Orwell's death

Three topless women from the organisation FEMEN managed to get in, shouting "Abortion is sacred" during a speech by Justice Minister Alberto Ruiz-Gallardon.
Spain's ruling Popular Party has announced legislation that will eliminate abortion on demand until week 14 of pregnancy.
The change, which has sparked several protests, reverses earlier abortion reforms in Spain. Critics have said that it sets the country back more than 25 years on the issue.

Tragic Week (Argentina)
Tragic Week (Spanish: Semana Trágica) was a series of riots and massacres that took place in Buenos Aires, Argentina, during the week of January 7, 1919. The riot was led by anarchists and communists, and was eventually crushed by the Argentine Federal Police under Luis Dellepiane and the intervention of the Argentine Army, Argentine Marine Corps and Argentine Navy.

Catalonia
Catalonia (Catalan: Catalunya, Occitan: Catalonha, Spanish: Cataluña) is an autonomous community of Spain politically designated as a nationality. Catalonia consists of four provinces: Barcelona, Girona, Lleida, and Tarragona. The capital and largest city is Barcelona, the second-largest city in Spain and the centre of one of the largest metropolitan areas in Europe and the Mediterranean basin.
Catalonia comprises most of the territory of the former Principality of Catalonia, with the remainder now part of France's Pyrénées-Orientales. Spanish Civil War
The Spanish Civil War (Spanish: Guerra Civil Española), widely known in Spain simply as The Civil War (Spanish: Guerra Civil) or The War (Spanish: La Guerra), took place from 1936 to 1939 and was fought between the Republicans, who were loyal to the democratic, left-leaning Second Spanish Republic, and the Nationalists, a falangist group led by General Francisco Franco. The Nationalists won, and Franco then ruled Spain for the next 36 years, from April 1939 until his death in November 1975.
The war began after a pronunciamiento (declaration of opposition) by a group of generals of the Spanish Republican Armed Forces, originally under the leadership of José Sanjurjo, against the elected, leftist government of the Second Spanish Republic, at the time under the leadership of President Manuel Azaña. The Nationalist group was supported by a number of conservative groups, including the Spanish Confederation of Autonomous Right-wing Groups (Confederación Española de Derechas Autónomas, or CEDA), monarchists such as the religious conservative (Catholic) Carlists, and the Falange Española Tradicionalista y de las Juntas de Ofensiva Nacional Sindicalista, a fascist group. Sanjurjo was killed in an aircraft accident while attempting to return from exile in Portugal, whereupon Franco emerged as the leader of the Nationalists.

George Orwell
Eric Arthur Blair (25 June 1903 – 21 January 1950), who used the pen name George Orwell, was an English novelist, essayist, journalist and critic. His work is marked by lucid prose, awareness of social injustice, opposition to totalitarianism, and outspoken support of democratic socialism.
Orwell wrote literary criticism, poetry, fiction, and polemical journalism. He is perhaps best known for his dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949) and the allegorical novella Animal Farm (1945). His non-fiction works, including The Road to Wigan Pier (1937), documenting his experience of working class life in the north of England, and Homage to Catalonia (1938), an account of his experiences in the Spanish Civil War, are widely acclaimed, as are his essays on politics, literature, language, and culture. In 2008, The Times ranked him second on a list of "The 50 greatest British writers since 1945".
Orwell's work continues to influence popular and political culture, and the term Orwellian—descriptive of totalitarian or authoritarian social practices—has entered the language together with many of his neologisms, including, but not limited to, cold war, Big Brother, Thought Police, Room 101, memory hole, newspeak, doublethink, and thoughtcrime.

Homenaje a Cataluña (en inglés Homage to Catalonia)
Es el relato personal de George Orwell sobre su experiencia durante la Guerra Civil española, escrito en primera persona. La primera edición fue publicada en 1938. Orwell sirvió tanto como soldado raso y como oficial en partes de Cataluña y Aragón desde diciembre de 1936 hasta junio de 1937, cuando tras los sucesos de mayo de 1937, el partido político en el que se encontraba (el POUM, un partido comunista antiestalinista dirigido por Andreu Nin) fue declarado organización ilegal y se vio forzado a huir o enfrentarse al encarcelamiento.
Orwell estuvo como miliciano del POUM en Cataluña desde el 26 de diciembre de 1936 hasta el 23 de junio de 1937, durante la Guerra Civil, y muestra la represión de la que fueron objeto los militantes del POUM por parte de los sectores estalinistas del gobierno republicano.
En ella, Orwell narra su llegada a una Barcelona que bulle en los últimos días de 1936 en la revolución libertaria, expresando su admiración por la misma en largos párrafos de su texto, con el fin de integrarse a una unidad combatiente del POUM y evitar integrarse como miliciano en las Brigadas Internacionales (con cuyo liderazgo mayormente comunista no simpatizaba Orwell).
Homage to Catalonia is George Orwell's personal account of his experiences and observations in the Spanish Civil War. The first edition was published in the United Kingdom in 1938. The book was not published in the United States until February 1952, when it appeared with an influential preface by Lionel Trilling. The only translation published in Orwell's lifetime was into Italian, in December 1948. A French translation by Yvonne Davet—with whom Orwell corresponded, commenting on her translation and providing explanatory notes—in 1938–39 was not published until five years after Orwell's death

Since the scandal broke, dozens of similar cases have been discovered across Spain. The root of the problem is that town councils arent properly funded, explains lawyer Diego Martin. Many rely on developments to get the money they need.

Homenaje a Cataluña (en inglés Homage to Catalonia)
Es el relato personal de George Orwell sobre su experiencia durante la Guerra Civil española, escrito en primera persona. La primera edición fue publicada en 1938. Orwell sirvió tanto como soldado raso y como oficial en partes de Cataluña y Aragón desde diciembre de 1936 hasta junio de 1937, cuando tras los sucesos de mayo de 1937, el partido político en el que se encontraba (el POUM, un partido comunista antiestalinista dirigido por Andreu Nin) fue declarado organización ilegal y se vio forzado a huir o enfrentarse al encarcelamiento.
Orwell estuvo como miliciano del POUM en Cataluña desde el 26 de diciembre de 1936 hasta el 23 de junio de 1937, durante la Guerra Civil, y muestra la represión de la que fueron objeto los militantes del POUM por parte de los sectores estalinistas del gobierno republicano.
En ella, Orwell narra su llegada a una Barcelona que bulle en los últimos días de 1936 en la revolución libertaria, expresando su admiración por la misma en largos párrafos de su texto, con el fin de integrarse a una unidad combatiente del POUM y evitar integrarse como miliciano en las Brigadas Internacionales (con cuyo liderazgo mayormente comunista no simpatizaba Orwell).
Homage to Catalonia is George Orwell's personal account of his experiences and observations in the Spanish Civil War. The first edition was published in the United Kingdom in 1938. The book was not published in the United States until February 1952, when it appeared with an influential preface by Lionel Trilling. The only translation published in Orwell's lifetime was into Italian, in December 1948. A French translation by Yvonne Davet—with whom Orwell corresponded, commenting on her translation and providing explanatory notes—in 1938–39 was not published until five years after Orwell's death

Three topless women from the organisation FEMEN managed to get in, shouting "Abortion is sacred" during a speech by Justice Minister Alberto Ruiz-Gallardon.
Spain's ruling Popular Party has announced legislation that will eliminate abortion on demand until week 14 of pregnancy.
The change, which has sparked several protests, reverses earlier abortion reforms in Spain. Critics have said that it sets the country back more than 25 years on the issue.

Its a real disaster for the city, states Mercedes Vazquez. More than 30,000 flats originally approved by the council violate Spains planning laws. Former officials are now facing corruption charges. Since the scandal broke, dozens of similar cases have been discovered across Spain. The root of the problem is that town councils arent properly funded, explains lawyer Diego Martin. Many rely on developments to get the money they need.

Paul Preston: 'George Orwell and the Spanish Civil War'
Unfortunately Paul Preston was ill and was unable to attend the conference. Jim Jump, secretary of the IBMT, read Professor Preston's paper, 'George Orwell and the Spanish Civil War'. The paper noted that while Orwell's 'Homage to Catalonia' year on year outsells any other text on the Spanish Civil War, it is nevertheless only a partial and localised view of the war and misleading as a description of the reasons for the Spanish Republic's defeat. Preston's paper concluded by saying that Orwell's memoir "had given much succour to those who wished to claim, whether from the far left or the far right, that the defeat of the Spanish Republic was somehow more the responsibility of Stalin than of Franco, Hitler, Mussolini or Neville Chamberlain". Orwell estuvo como miliciano del POUM en Cataluña desde el 26 de diciembre de 1936 hasta el 23 de junio de 1937, durante la Guerra Civil, y muestra la represión de la que fueron objeto los militantes del POUM por parte de los sectores estalinistas del gobierno republicano.
En ella, Orwell narra su llegada a una Barcelona que bulle en los últimos días de 1936 en la revolución libertaria, expresando su admiración por la misma en largos párrafos de su texto, con el fin de integrarse a una unidad combatiente del POUM y evitar integrarse como miliciano en las Brigadas Internacionales (con cuyo liderazgo mayormente comunista no simpatizaba Orwell).
Homage to Catalonia is George Orwell's personal account of his experiences and observations in the Spanish Civil War. The first edition was published in the United Kingdom in 1938. The book was not published in the United States until February 1952, when it appeared with an influential preface by Lionel Trilling. The only translation published in Orwell's lifetime was into Italian, in December 1948. A French translation by Yvonne Davet—with whom Orwell corresponded, commenting on her translation and providing explanatory notes—in 1938–39 was not published until five years after Orwell's death

Unfortunately Paul Preston was ill and was unable to attend the conference. Jim Jump, secretary of the IBMT, read Professor Preston's paper, 'George Orwell and the Spanish Civil War'.
The paper noted that while Orwell's 'Homage to Catalonia' year on year outsells any other text on the Spanish Civil War, it is nevertheless only a partial and localised view of the war and misleading as a description of the reasons for the Spanish Republic's defeat.
Preston's paper concluded by saying that Orwell's memoir "had given much succour to those who wished to claim, whether from the far left or the far right, that the defeat of the Spanish Republic was somehow more the responsibility of Stalin than of Franco, Hitler, Mussolini or Neville Chamberlain". He ended his lecture by quoting Orwell: "...curiously enough the whole experience has left me with not less but more belief in the decency of human beings".

They formed International Brigades (Brigadas Internacionales) and fought heroically, aided by material support by the Soviet Union, who stepped in once it was clear that Fascist Germany and Italy were arming and enabling Fraco.
But today there are those who wish to distort this memory and muddy the waters. Now that all the International Brigaders have passed on, today many people's first encounter with tales of the Civil War could be via Ken Loach's very controversal film "Land and Freedom" or through anti-Communist George Orwell's "Homage to Catalonia". We hope this small video can go some way to readdressing the historical balance & understanding that we have through the International Brigaders.

In Dresden, the birthplace of PEGIDA, protesters convene at a square once named after Adolf Hitler to rally against the open-door policy of Angela Merkel. "She has no right to mix the German people, to create a new people, influenced by Islam", explains Tatjana Festerling, the party's second in command. "Merkel is the most dangerous woman in Europe."
Around 40,000 refugees came to Germany in just 6 weeks, but now German society appears to be increasingly polarised. In Dresden, the birthplace of PEGIDA, protesters convene at a square once named after Adolf Hitler to rally against the open-door policy of Angela Merkel. "She has no right to mix the German people, to create a new people, influenced by Islam", explains Tatjana Festerling, the party's second in command. "Merkel is the most dangerous woman in Europe."
Around 40,000 refugees came to Germany in just 6 weeks, but now German society appears to be increasingly polarised. "One of the great ironies of supermarkets is they are built on a very narrow definition of efficiency", explains author Andrew Simms. Indeed supermarket giants claim customers and food producers are to blame for waste, but that's far from the truth. Importing cheap food at a cost to the environment, the developing world provides produce for our shops to sell at low margins. As well as food thrown out at the end of the day, shorter sell-by dates and an increased 'buy-one-get-one-free' model generates mountains of waste.
