Anticon (styled as anticon.) is an independent record label based in Los Angeles, California.^[1] It was founded in 1997 by seven musicians and manager Baillie Parker.^[2] It is now collectively owned among six musicians, co-founder Baillie Parker, and manager Shaun Koplow.^[3] The original musicians signed to Anticon were once referred to as the Anticon collective.

History[link]

The label's roster of artists has been described as "the hip-hop equivalent of post-rock" and "avant-garde hip-hop," also called "trip-hop."^[2] Releases feature material created by its members, affiliates, and extended musical family. Although Anticon cohered originally within alternative hip hop circles, Anticon's founders have become only tangentially related to hip hop, and the label has begun releasing music in the indie rock and electronica genres. Artists signed to Anticon are based on the west coast, the east coast, the midwest, and Canada. The label has also signed artists in the United Kingdom.

The artists within the collective have been known to perform and release music in solo and group form. Artists on the label are known for frequent collaboration, both within and outside of their own collective. However, the Anticon collective has over time evolved into a group of separate artists who, despite sharing a similar progressive and often challenging^[4] indie quality, explore different styles of music including electronica and rock. Many of the artists on Anticon are signed to multiple labels, and some have their own small, independent labels through which they have self-released material.

Anticon has also organized art exhibitions featuring visual art by several of the artists on the label.^[5]

On February 9, 2010, co-founder Sole (Tim Holland) left Anticon exclaiming that it is time to try to push forward and find new opportunities. He leaves assurance that this is a progressive decision and has nothing to do with his love for Anticon. He said, "There are no ill feelings between myself and members of anticon. I will continue to work with many of the artists and will always love them as brothers and consider them allies." He officially renounced his 1/8 of ownership and formal affiliations.^[6]

Why? (styled as WHY?) is American alternative hip hop and indie rock band.

Originally the moniker of Berkeley, California artist Jonathan "Yoni" Wolf, Why? became a full band before their 2005 album Elephant Eyelash with Doug McDiarmid, Matt Meldon and Yoni's older brother Josiah Wolf. When Matt Meldon left, the band became a three-piece, with Yoni as primary singer-songwriter and additional keyboardist at live concerts. In 2008, the group added bassist Austin Brown to their lineup, making them a four-piece once again. Why?'s discography consists of four albums, four EPs, a number of singles and a handful of limited edition CD-Rs.

Yoni Wolf is a co-founder of Anticon. He has also been a member of numerous groups including Greenthink, Clouddead, Reaching Quiet and Hymie's Basement.

Style[link]

In their arrangements, Why? leans more toward folk and indie rock, as opposed to the more hip hop styling of their label-mates in Anticon. Their lyrics also tend to be very abstract, focusing more on imagery than on any particular story.

History[link]

Jonathan "Yoni" Wolf was born in Cincinnati, Ohio to Messianic Jewish parents.^[1] Before his first year in high school, he discovered an old 4-track in his father's synagogue and began to experiment musically. His forays into rapping, drumming and poetry followed.

In 1997, while attending art school at the University of Cincinnati, Yoni Wolf met fellow student Doseone at the semifinals of Scribble Jam. Along with Doseone, Mr. Dibbs and Josiah Wolf, he formed the live improvisational group Apogee. The partnership of Yoni Wolf and Doseone continued for many years under many guises, including Greenthink and Clouddead.

In 2005, Why? released the second album Elephant Eyelash. The album deviated considerably from the first album Oaklandazulasylum, primarily as less of an independent solo project to more of the sound of a full indie rock band. To accomplish this sound, Yoni Wolf enlisted the help of Josiah Wolf on drums, Matt Meldon on guitar and Doug McDiarmid as a random task member. The group toured much of 2005 in support of the album as a four-piece. However, by the time of their May 2006 tour with Islands, the group had become a three-piece, because Matt Meldon moved to an island off the coast of Seattle to live with his girlfriend.^[2]

For the third album Alopecia, Why? asked the fans to contribute photographs of their palms for the album's artwork. They released "The Hollows" as the first single, with two different European and US versions, featuring remixes and covers by Boards of Canada, Xiu Xiu, Dntel, Half-handed Cloud, Dump and Islands. Alopecia was released in 2008 to very positive reviews.

In 2009, Why? released the fourth album Eskimo Snow. The ten songs on the album were recorded during the Alopecia sessions and are described by Yoni Wolf as "the least hip-hop out of anything I've ever been involved with."^[3]

In 2010, Josiah Wolf released his first solo album Jet Lag.^[4][5][6]

Yoni Wolf has produced tracks for other emcees. He produced several tracks for Pedestrian's album Volume One: UnIndian Songs in 2005. He also produced several tracks for Serengeti's album Family and Friends as well as providing backup vocals in 2011.^[7]

Yoni Wolf has released many albums as a member of groups including Reaching Quiet, Hymie's Basement, Miss Ohio's Nameless and Object Beings. He has collaborated with Doseone, Odd Nosdam, Fog among others.

Hideaki Ishi (石 英明, Ishi Hideaki^?) (born 1962, Tokyo, Japan), better known as DJ Krush, is a producer and DJ. He is known for his atmospheric instrumental production which incorporates sound elements from nature and extensive use of jazz and soul samples.

Biography[link]

Ishi was born in 1962 in Tokyo. Ishi dropped out of school at an early age and joined a local gang, and a few years later, the yakuza. Early into his career as a yakuza underling, Ishi discovered a severed finger wrapped in paper on his desk. Later, after discovering that it had belonged to his best friend, he decided to leave the yakuza and cut ties with the criminal underworld.^[1]

In the early 1980s, Ishi went to the movies with his girlfriend and saw the film Wild Style, the first hip hop motion picture directed by Charlie Ahearn. He was inspired to become a hip hop musician, and made the firm decision to become a DJ. The day after seeing this movie, he headed to instrument shops looking for equipment. At this time the term "mixer" was unknown to most of Tokyo's electronic store salesmen. After a hard time buying the things he needed, Ishi started his career as one of the first hip hop artists in Japan.

Aside from being considered one of the pioneers of Japanese hip hop,^[2] Ishi has established himself as one of the most respected artists and producers in the hip hop industry, both in Japan and abroad. Upon entering the industry, Ishi, with his experimental beats and instrumental sounds, changed the face of hip-hop at a time when it was dominated by the American rap scene.^[3] He is reluctant to identify his music with any particular genre, for it would place limits on his listeners and on his talents. He has been regarded as ambient, trip hop, some combination of the two, and hip hop. DJ Krush prefers to exercise an ideological distance from the genres he is usually grouped into, while maintaining a healthy appreciation for all music forms and styles.^[4] In 1996, DJ Krush contributed to the AIDS benefit album Offbeat: A Red Hot Soundtrip produced by the Red Hot Organization.

Linda Rose Tripp (née Carotenuto; born November 24, 1949) is a former civil servant who became a central figure in the Lewinsky scandal of 1998 and 1999 that led to the impeachment and subsequent acquittal of U.S. President Bill Clinton.

Early life and government employment[link]

Tripp was born in Jersey City, New Jersey. She graduated in 1968 from Hanover Park High School in East Hanover, New Jersey.^[1]

Tripp was an Army Intelligence secretary at Fort Meade before being transferred to the Pentagon in 1987. Two years later she became an assistant for Delta Force.

Tripp was a White House employee in the George H. W. Bush administration, and kept her job when Bill Clinton took over in 1993. During the summer of 1994, senior White House aides wanted Tripp out, so they arranged a job for her in the public affairs office in the Pentagon which gave her a raise of $20,000 per year.^[2]

Tripp's involvement in the Lewinsky scandal[link]

Tripp became a close confidante of another former White House employee, Monica Lewinsky, while they both worked in the Pentagon's public affairs office. According to Tripp, who is about 24 years older than Lewinsky, they knew one another for a year and a half before the scandal began to reach its critical stage. After Lewinsky revealed to Tripp that she had been in a physical relationship with President Clinton, Tripp, acting on the advice of Lucianne Goldberg, began to secretly record phone conversations with Lewinsky while encouraging Lewinsky to document details of her relationship with the president.

In August 1997, Newsweek’s Michael Isikoff reported that Tripp said she had encountered Kathleen Willey coming out of the Oval Office "disheveled. Her face red and her lipstick was off." Willey alleged that Clinton groped her. Clinton's lawyer, Robert S. Bennett said in the Newsweek article that "Linda Tripp is not to be believed."^[3]

In January 1998, Tripp gave the surreptitiously recorded tapes to then-Independent Counsel Kenneth Starr in exchange for immunity from prosecution. Tripp disclosed to Starr that she was aware of the relationship between Lewinsky and President Clinton, that Lewinsky had executed a false affidavit denying the relationship that was submitted to the federal court in Arkansas in the Jones v. Clinton lawsuit, and that Lewinsky had attempted to suborn Tripp's perjury in the Jones v. Clinton suit to conceal the Clinton-Lewinsky relationship as well as Tripp's claim regarding Kathleen Willey from the federal court. As Tripp explained, she was being solicited to commit a crime to conceal evidence in the Jones civil rights case.^[4] Tripp also informed Starr of the existence of a navy blue dress that Lewinsky owned that was soiled with Clinton's semen. During their friendship, Lewinsky had shown the dress to Tripp and said she intended to have it dry-cleaned; Tripp convinced her not to.

Based on Tripp’s tapes, Starr obtained approval from Attorney General Janet Reno and the special court overseeing the Independent Counsel to expand Starr's investigation into the Clinton-Lewinsky relationship, looking for potential incidents of perjury, to investigate Lewinsky for perjury and suborning perjury as a witness in the lawsuit Paula Jones had brought against Clinton.^[5]

While Tripp maintains she acted out of "patriotic duty," some Americans believe that she betrayed Lewinsky in the hopes of using her knowledge of the relationship to obtain a possible book or movie deal, neither of which has occurred to date. Tripp has claimed that she taped Lewinsky out of self-defense, as she feared retaliation from the Clinton Administration, also claiming Lewinsky had assured President Clinton that she had only told Tripp about their affair (which was untrue), thus making her a target as she refused to go along with perjuring herself to protect Lewinsky and the President.

Eventually both Clinton and Lewinsky had to appear before a Washington, D.C., grand jury to answer questions, although Clinton appeared via closed circuit television. After the round of interrogation, the jurors offered Lewinsky the chance to offer any last words. "I hate Linda Tripp," she said.^[6]

Tripp was portrayed by John Goodman in recurring Saturday Night Live sketches. Tripp liked most of Goodman’s impersonations of her, except for one, which hurt her feelings, in which he portrayed her as a man. ^[4]

Indictment by the state of Maryland[link]

Tripp was a resident of Columbia, Maryland, at the time she made her surreptitious recordings of the conversations with Lewinsky, and 49 Democrats in the Maryland Legislature signed a letter to the state prosecutor demanding that Tripp be prosecuted under Maryland’s wiretap law.^[7] Prior to trial, the state court ruled that, due to the immunity agreements which the Independent Counsel's office entered into with Tripp, Lewinsky, and others, a substantial amount of the evidence which the prosecution intended to use was inadmissible. At a pre-trial hearing the prosecution called Lewinsky as a witness to try to establish that her testimony against Tripp was untainted by the Independent Counsel investigation. However, the Maryland state court ruled that Lewinsky, who "admitted that she lied under oath in a federal proceeding and has stated that lying has been a part of her life," was not credible and Lewinsky's proposed testimony against Tripp was "bathed in impermissible taint." As a result, all charges against Tripp were dismissed on May 26, 2000, when the prosecution decided not to proceed with the trial of the case.

Arrest record controversy[link]

On March 14, 1998, it was revealed that Linda Tripp was arrested when she was 19 years old in Greenwood Lake, New York, in 1969 on charges of stealing $263 in cash as well as a wristwatch worth about $600. The charges were eventually dismissed before coming to trial.^[8] Although never convicted in 1969, years later Tripp answered “no” to the question “Have you ever been either charged or arrested for a crime?” on the Department of Defense security clearance form.

Shortly before Tripp was scheduled to appear before the grand jury in the Lewinsky investigation, in March 1998, Assistant Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs, Kenneth Bacon, and his deputy, Clifford Bernath, leaked to reporter Jane Mayer of The New Yorker magazine, Tripp’s answer to the arrest question on her security clearance form. Following the Bacon–Bernath leak to Mayer, the Department of Defense leaked to the news media other confidential information from Tripp’s personnel and security files. The Department of Defense Inspector General investigated the leak of Tripp’s security clearance form information and found that Bacon and Bernath violated the Privacy Act, and the DoD IG concluded that Bacon and Bernath should have known that the release of information from Tripp’s security file was improper.^[9]

Termination from government employment[link]

On January 19, 2001, the last full day of the Clinton Administration, Linda Tripp was fired from her job in the Pentagon.^[10] Tripp claimed that the firing was vindictive, but the Clinton administration countered that all political appointees like Tripp are normally asked to submit their resignation upon a new administration taking over, and those who refuse are fired.

Lawsuit and settlement[link]

Tripp sued the Department of Defense and the Justice Department for releasing information from her security file and employment file to the news media in violation of the Privacy Act of 1974. On November 3, 2003, Tripp reached a settlement with the federal government.^[11] The settlement included a one-time payment of more than $595,000, a retroactive promotion, and retroactive pay at the highest salary for 1998, 1999 and 2000. She also received a pension and was cleared to work for the federal government again. Her rights to remain part of a class action lawsuit against the government were also preserved.

George H. W. Bush affair controversy[link]

It has been alleged that Linda Tripp was involved in leaking information about an alleged affair between former President George H. W. Bush and a staffer named Jennifer Fitzgerald. It has also been speculated that this may explain why she was not rehired to her old White House position despite calls from many conservatives to Bush’s son, former President George W. Bush, to do so;^[12] however, Tripp has publicly denied this allegation as "ludicrous" and "a complete fabrication."^[4]

Life since the Lewinsky scandal[link]

Since the Lewinsky scandal, Tripp has moved to Northern Virginia, married German architect Dieter Rausch in 2004 and opened with her new husband a year-round Christmas shop, called the Christmas Sleigh, in Middleburg, Virginia.

In a December 1, 2003, appearance with Larry King on Larry King Live, Tripp told of her suffering breast cancer. On the subject of her successful invasion of privacy lawsuit against the federal government, Tripp claimed that she actually came out behind financially, due to attorneys’ fees and the derailment of her government career. She also claimed that the Clinton Administration’s violations of her privacy were not equivalent to her violations of Monica Lewinsky’s privacy as the Clinton Administration’s leaking of her employment history was illegal, not addressing the fact that she herself was alleged to have violated the Maryland wiretap laws. Furthermore, Lewinsky had asked her to lie under oath in the Paula Jones lawsuit against Bill Clinton, something she had refused to do. She told King that she only began taping her conversations with Lewinsky, whom she had known for 18 months, a mere eight weeks before she was scheduled to be deposed in the Jones lawsuit. Tripp had earlier said she taped the conversations to prevent the Clinton Administration from retaliating against her, since she had decided not to lie under oath.^[13] Her would-be publisher, Lucianne Goldberg, however, said in a 1997 interview published in the New York Times that she had advised Tripp to record her conversations with Lewinsky in order to obtain factual proof for a book deal.^[14]
