Monkey Culture: Japanese snow monkeys washing potatoes
Japanese snow monkeys (macaques, 日本猿- nihonzaru, Macaca fuscata) on Koshima display group learning and culture by discovering and sharing the technique of washing sweet potatoes in fresh water to rinse off sand and dirt, and then salt-water, to add flavor. They also discover how to separate sand and rice clumps by throwing the mixture into water and letting the rice float to the surface. Parts are closed-captioned due to background surf noise. From the BBC documentary "Life on Earth: Episode 12: Life in the Trees" (1979), narrated by a younger David Attenborough. More Information: ► en.wikipedia.org ► en.wikipedia.org

Rescued Macaques - Operation Monkey Trek
In mid-July, a group of 25 Java Macaques arrived at Primarily Primates after their release from a New Jersey toxicology lab that went out of business. There were 55 macaque monkeys. All had been used in experiments. Sanctuaries were found for all of them. Twenty-five came to Primarily Primates. The macaques arrived wearing blue restraint collars that made it easier for the vivisectors to control them. The hard plastic collars were removed as soon as they arrived, and Dr. Valerie Kirk, our on-site veterinarian, assessed the monkeys' health.

Monkey Business: Monkeys as Waiters in Japan
For more news and videos visit ☛ english.ntdtv.com Follow us on Twitter ☛ http Add us on Facebook ☛ me.lt And now onto an unusual tip to fight off a business crisis. A Japanese tavern owner is bringing up a new generation of customer pleasing waiters: macaque monkeys. Are you ready for some monkey business? STORY: This "sake house" in northern Tokyo employs two popular and unusual waiters. They are named Yat-chan and Fuku-chan (pronounced Yat-tchan and Fookoo-chan), and are a pair of Japanese macaque monkeys. Four-year-old Fuku-chan has already two years of experience under his furry belt. His main duty is delivering hot towels to customers before they order their drinks. This is how 12 year-old Yat-chan learned the tricks of the trade. [Kaoru Otsuka, Tavern Owner]: "Yat-chan first learned by just watching me working in the restaurant. It all started when one day I gave him a hot towel out of curiosity and he brought the towel to the customer." Both monkeys are well appreciated by customers who tip them with boiled soy beans. [Takayoshi Soeno, Tavern Customer]: "The monkeys are actually better waiters than some really bad human ones!" Yat-chan is a natural and is always eager to please his customers. [Shoichi Yano, Tavern Customer]: "These guys are really adorable. They're like my kids. Well actually better -- my son doesn't listen to me but Yat-chan will." And customers are impressed that Yat-chan understands their order. [Miho Takikawa, Tavern Customer]: "We ...

Macaque monkey attacks cameraman !!!
Our website: www.info-on-scuba-diving.com Filming wildlife is not always easy. This clip was filmed on location at the Bako National Park in Sarawak, Malaysia to help promote tourism. The monkeys and other wildlife are free to roam at will on the island. Looking through the viewfinder you immerse yourself in the subject and do not always fully appreciate the dangers. Thankfully, our guide was on hand to steer this wayward ape with its sharp teeth away from me! No animals - or indeed humans were harmed in the filming of this clip.

Facial communication between mother and infant macaque monkeys 1
Mother macaque interacting with her infant. The mutual gaze is sustained and is interrupted by gaze shifts, apparently aimed at attending the object of interest of her infant. During this face-to-face interaction, the mother is gently pulling the infant's head and seems to be particularly attracted by the eyes of the infant. What we found very common are the lipsmacks that are documented in this video. These mouth-face contacts closely resemble the human kiss. We can only speculate about the possible origin of the human kiss from these particular mother-infant grooming activities. Macaques (long tail monkeys) at the woods of University Malaya
Some internet sites have been telling the world that the Macaques monkeys in Malaysia are fast disappearing or may become extinct due to development. LET ME TELL THE WORLD that this contention is RUBBISH. I attended convocation days at the University of Malaya (Kuala Lumpur) from 14 to 15th August this year 2009 and stayed in the university ground motel called "Rumah Universiti". There are lots of woods within this vast university grounds and it is inhabited by a large family of Macaques as this video shows. And in the beginning of this video, it looks like they are good in producing babies too. Not only their number is large, there are complaints that if the monkeys are passing by on the tree tops near the roads and some ladies are seen carrying shopping bags, these monkeys know that the bags may contain food and goodies and they are known to attack the ladies and rob them of the food. They also haunts the woods at the back of the university motel and should you left your windows open, theise macaques are good in sneaking through the windows and create havoc inside your room. Strangely the management of the university hotel did not leave any warnings or notices about these monkeys by keeping the windows shut at the balconies. I had the pleasure of trying to offer them some biscuits but they act more like robbers and certainly not friendly.

Facial communication between mother and infant macaque monkeys 2
A mother gesturing at her 6-day-old infant. The type of gestures that can be observed (lipsmacking and teeth-chatter) are common among rhesus macaques. What is striking here is the exaggeration of the gesture that is accompanied by head-bobbings in order to further attract infant attention. This seems to be specific to mother-infant relationship. The exaggeration of facial displays and other modifications of the behavior in humans (eg, the high pitch in the voice) are typical ways of communicating between mother and infant, the so called 'motherese.' Our study demonstrated that these types of gesturing are very common during the first three weeks of the infant macaque life. However, their functions remain unclear.
