http://www.democracynow.org - Closing arguments have begun in the historic trial against U.S.-backed Guatemalan dictator Efraín Ríos Montt, the first head of state in the Americas to stand trial for genocide. Ríos Montt is charged with overseeing the slaughter of more than 1,700 people in Guatemala\'s Ixil region after he seized power in 1982. The trial has been revived after it was suspended due to intervention by Guatemalan President Otto Pérez Molina and death threats by army associates against judges and prosecutors. On Wednesday, prosecutors asked for Ríos Montt to be sentenced to 75 years in prison. Defense lawyers are expected to give closing arguments today. We\'re joined by investigative journalist Allan Nairn in Guatemala City. In the 1980s, Nairn extensively documented broad army responsibility for the massacres.

Watch our exclusive interview with Allan Nairn about his reporting in Guatemala in the 1980s and the trial:

52-year-old Ariel Castro hung his head as he appeared in court charged over the kidnapping of three women who were missing for around a decade. The former school bus driver is also accused of raping them during a decade of captivity in his house in Cleveland, Ohio.

It was the first time the 52-year-old had been seen in public since his arrest on Monday following the women\'s escape. His bail was set at $8 million.

Castro\'s two brothers, Pedro, 54, and Onil, 50, were also arrested but were not charged after officers decided they had no knowledge of the abductions.

They appeared in court on unrelated misdemeanor charges and were released. Report by Anna Jones.

http://www.democracynow.org - Closing arguments have begun in the historic trial against U.S.-backed Guatemalan dictator Efraín Ríos Montt, the first head of state in the Americas to stand trial for genocide. Ríos Montt is charged with overseeing the slaughter of more than 1,700 people in Guatemala's Ixil region after he seized power in 1982. We're joined by investigative journalist Allan Nairn in Guatemala City. In the 1980s, Nairn extensively documented broad army responsibility for the massacres. 52-year-old Ariel Castro hung his head as he appeared in court charged over the kidnapping of three women who were missing for around a decade. The former school bus driver is also accused of raping them during a decade of captivity in his house in Cleveland, Ohio. It was the first time the 52-year-old had been seen in public since his arrest on Monday following the women's escape. His bail was set at $8 million. Castro's two brothers, Pedro, 54, and Onil, 50, were also arrested but were not charged after officers decided they had no knowledge of the abductions. They appeared in court on unrelated misdemeanor charges and were released. Report by Anna Jones.
