Did you know that in 1908 in Siberia, one of the most catastrophic, mind-blowing (and mysterious) cosmic impact catastrophes ever in the history of civilization occurred - and yet it wasn't widely known outside Russia (save for a few astronomy and research scientist enclaves) until around the 1970's? Even interested research parties didn't learn about or even set foot on the scene of disaster until 1921. It didn't make front page news in the papers when it happened because of the extreme remoteness of that region of Siberia. Nikola Tesla, was testing out some sort of weird, fantasmigorical communication device, or super-scary "energy weapon" or "death ray" and made a big "...oops!" Tesla was known to be working on a sort of wireless torpedo, called an "telautomaton," which was a remote controlled boat he offered to the U.S. Navy for the purpose of carrying explosives to naval targets. An airborne version of the telautomaton device was under development as well. Some also believe that if there was a Tesla connection, and it was a weapon test... that he may have been pressured into it and then kept quiet. This is of course just heaping extra drama onto a theory already wrought with ridiculousness. Even though the 1908 time frame does match up for Tesla working on such devices, for him to be testing out such inventions in such an apocalyptic manner is quite a stretch, not to mention he was nowhere near the area at the time. Even funnier: the theory that Tesla inadvertently caused the massive explosion when he was trying to get the attention of an explorer friend in the area. Tesla was always fascinated with the concept of wireless propagation, and he was known to work on "projected wave energy" processes that could create microscopic, invisible particles of concentrated energy that could be beamed great distances... often resulting in electric fireballs, spherical plasmoids, or ball lightning. Why not use it to get someone's attention who's not near a telegram service? Of course this falls into the "secret weapons test" category as well. The theory that he was using it to try and get the attention of a friend halfway around the world is hilarious, but adsurd: *K-A-B-O-O-O-M!!!*

Albert Roussel’s composition "Joueurs de Flûte” is typical of the works to be heard on this recording: French flute music written by French composers for French flautists. Flute virtuosos and the repertoire created for them by the modern French school of flute technique is represented here. Paul Taffanel (1844 -1908) was the man who sparked the prodigious development of the flute repertoire in France on the Boehm instrument. His work was carried on by his outstanding pupil Philippe Gaubert, and he in turn was followed by generations of flautists who have ensured that this tradition has stayed vibrantly alive up to the present day.
The music collected here is testimony of this activity over more than 5 decades. Almost all the works are dedicated to famous flute teachers (Taffanel, Gaubert, Hennebains, Blanquart, Fleury, Moyse); and, with the exception of the piece by Roussel, they were all intended for their pupils, graduates of the Conservatoire National in Paris. Marcel Moyse, for example, won the first prize in 1906 playing the compulsory piece composed by Gaubert ("Nocturne et Allegretto Scherzando”).
This selection, then, concentrates on compositions from the early 20th century: Chaminade, Enesco, Gaubert and Hüe were writing brilliant works at that time, pieces which have continued to hold their own as etudes and even in some cases in the concert repertoire of flautists up to the present day. Their suave melodic lines and attractive virtuosity contrast with Roussel’s "Joueurs de Flûte”. This composition has very idiosyncratic and essentially modern aspects, which are astonishing in view of the fact that Roussel died before all the other composers represented here. Finally, Messiaen added a very original work to the flute repertoire in "Le merle noir”, which is very typical of this innovative composer.
Flautists will find this programme very welcome; it illuminates a part of the repertoire that is rarely heard in the concert halls. Listeners will enjoy the wide expressive range of the flute extended by the development of French instrumental technique: colourful and soft lyricism and light, brilliant virtuosity.
Peter-Lukas Graf
Peter-Lukas Graf was born in 1929. He studied with Andre Jaunet (Zurich) and Marcel Moyse and Roger Cortet (Paris). He was awarded first prize as and received a conductor’s Diploma at the Conservatoire National in Paris. In 1953, he received first prize as at the International Music Contest in Munich; in 1958, the Bablock Prize of the H. Cohan International Music Award, London.
From 1951 until 1957 he was solo flautist in the Winterthur City Orchestra; from 1961 until 1966 opera conductor at the City Theatre in Lucerne. Since 1973 he has taught at the Basel Music Academy, Peter-Lukas Graf performs throughout Europe, South America, Israel, Russia, Australia and Japan.

The Tunguska event was a large explosion, caused by an asteroid or comet, which occurred near the Podkamennaya Tunguska River in what is now Krasnoyarsk Krai, Russia, at about 07:14 KRAT (00:14 UT) on June 30 [O.S. June 17], 1908.[1][2][3] The explosion occurred at an altitude of 5–10 kilometres (3–6 mi) at 60.886°N, 101.894°E. It is classified as an impact event even though the object is believed to have burst in the air rather than hit the surface.[4] Different studies have yielded widely varying estimates of the impacting object's size, on the order of 60 m (200 ft) to 190 m (620 ft).[5] It is the largest impact event on or near Earth in recorded history.
Since the 1908 event, there have been an estimated 1,000 scholarly papers (mainly in Russian) published on the Tunguska explosion. Many scientists have participated in Tunguska studies: the best known are Leonid Kulik, Yevgeny Krinov, Kirill Florensky, Nikolai Vladimirovich Vasiliev, and Wilhelm Fast.[6] In 2013, a team of researchers led by Victor Kvasnytsya of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine published analysis results of micro-samples from a peat bog near the blast epicenter showing fragments that may be of meteoritic origin.[7][8]
Estimates of the energy of the blast range from as low as three to as high as 30 megatons of TNT (between 13 and 130 PJ).[9][10] Most likely it was between 10 and 15 megatons of TNT (42 and 63 PJ),[10] and if so, the energy of the explosion was about 1,000 times greater than that of the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima, Japan; roughly equal to that of the United States' Castle Bravo ground-based thermonuclear test detonation on March 1, 1954; and about two-fifths that of the Soviet Union's later Tsar Bomba (the largest nuclear weapon ever detonated).[11]
It is estimated that the Tunguska explosion knocked down some 80 million trees over an area of 2,150 square kilometres (830 sq mi), and that the shock wave from the blast would have measured 5.0 on the Richter scale. An explosion of this magnitude would be capable of destroying a large metropolitan area,[12] but due to the remoteness of the location, no fatalities were documented. This event has helped to spark discussion of asteroid impact avoidance.

June 17], 1908.[1][2][3] The explosion occurred at an altitude of 5–10 kilometres (3–6 mi) at 60.886°N, 101.894°E. It is classified as an impact event even though the object is believed to have burst in the air rather than hit the surface.[4] Different studies have yielded widely varying estimates of the impacting object's size, on the order of 60 m (200 ft) to 190 m (620 ft).[5] It is the largest impact event on or near Earth in recorded history. Since the 1908 event, there have been an estimated 1,000 scholarly papers (mainly in Russian) published on the Tunguska explosion. Many scientists have participated in Tunguska studies: the best known are Leonid Kulik, Yevgeny Krinov, Kirill Florensky, Nikolai Vladimirovich Vasiliev, and Wilhelm Fast.[6] In 2013, a team of researchers led by Victor Kvasnytsya of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine published analysis results of micro-samples from a peat bog near the blast epicenter showing fragments that may be of meteoritic origin.[7][8] Estimates of the energy of the blast range from as low as three to as high as 30 megatons of TNT (between 13 and 130 PJ).[9][10] Most likely it was between 10 and 15 megatons of TNT (42 and 63 PJ),[10] and if so, the energy of the explosion was about 1,000 times greater than that of the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima, Japan; roughly equal to that of the United States' Castle Bravo ground-based thermonuclear test detonation on March 1, 1954; and about two-fifths that of the Soviet Union's later Tsar Bomba (the largest nuclear weapon ever detonated).[11] It is estimated that the Tunguska explosion knocked down some 80 million trees over an area of 2,150 square kilometres (830 sq mi), and that the shock wave from the blast would have measured 5.0 on the Richter scale. An explosion of this magnitude would be capable of destroying a large metropolitan area,[12] but due to the remoteness of the location, no fatalities were documented. The so-called ‘Tunguska Event’ refers to a major explosion that occurred on 30 June 1908 in the Tunguska region of Siberia, causing the destruction of over 2000 km2 of taiga, globally detected pressure and seismic waves, and bright luminescence in the night skies of Europe and Central Asia, combined with other unusual phenomena. The ‘Tunguska Event’ may be related to the impact with the Earth of a cosmic body that exploded about 5–10 km above ground, releasing in the atmosphere 10–15 Mton of energy. Nikola Tesla, was testing out some sort of weird, fantasmigorical communication device, or super-scary "energy weapon" or "death ray" and made a big "...oops!" Tesla was known to be working on a sort of wireless torpedo, called an "telautomaton," which was a remote controlled boat he offered to the U.S. Navy for the purpose of carrying explosives to naval targets. An airborne version of the telautomaton device was under development as well. Some also believe that if there was a Tesla connection, and it was a weapon test... that he may have been pressured into it and then kept quiet. This is of course just heaping extra drama onto a theory already wrought with ridiculousness. Even though the 1908 time frame does match up for Tesla working on such devices, for him to be testing out such inventions in such an apocalyptic manner is quite a stretch, not to mention he was nowhere near the area at the time. Even funnier: the theory that Tesla inadvertently caused the massive explosion when he was trying to get the attention of an explorer friend in the area. Tesla was always fascinated with the concept of wireless propagation, and he was known to work on "projected wave energy" processes that could create microscopic, invisible particles of concentrated energy that could be beamed great distances... often resulting in electric fireballs, spherical plasmoids, or ball lightning. Why not use it to get someone's attention who's not near a telegram service? Of course this falls into the "secret weapons test" category as well. The theory that he was using it to try and get the attention of a friend halfway around the world is hilarious, but adsurd: *K-A-B-O-O-O-M!!!*

The music collected here is testimony of this activity over more than 5 decades. Almost all the works are dedicated to famous flute teachers (Taffanel, Gaubert, Hennebains, Blanquart, Fleury, Moyse); and, with the exception of the piece by Roussel, they were all intended for their pupils, graduates of the Conservatoire National in Paris. Marcel Moyse, for example, won the first prize in 1906 playing the compulsory piece composed by Gaubert ("Nocturne et Allegretto Scherzando”).
This selection, then, concentrates on compositions from the early 20th century: Chaminade, Enesco, Gaubert and Hüe were writing brilliant works at that time, pieces which have continued to hold their own as etudes and even in some cases in the concert repertoire of flautists up to the present day. Their suave melodic lines and attractive virtuosity contrast with Roussel’s "Joueurs de Flûte”. This composition has very idiosyncratic and essentially modern aspects, which are astonishing in view of the fact that Roussel died before all the other composers represented here. Finally, Messiaen added a very original work to the flute repertoire in "Le merle noir”, which is very typical of this innovative composer.
Flautists will find this programme very welcome; it illuminates a part of the repertoire that is rarely heard in the concert halls. Listeners will enjoy the wide expressive range of the flute extended by the development of French instrumental technique: colourful and soft lyricism and light, brilliant virtuosity.
Peter-Lukas Graf
Peter-Lukas Graf was born in 1929. He studied with Andre Jaunet (Zurich) and Marcel Moyse and Roger Cortet (Paris). He was awarded first prize as and received a conductor’s Diploma at the Conservatoire National in Paris. In 1953, he received first prize as at the International Music Contest in Munich; in 1958, the Bablock Prize of the H. Cohan International Music Award, London.
From 1951 until 1957 he was solo flautist in the Winterthur City Orchestra; from 1961 until 1966 opera conductor at the City Theatre in Lucerne. Since 1973 he has taught at the Basel Music Academy, Peter-Lukas Graf performs throughout Europe, South America, Israel, Russia, Australia and Japan.

The Tunguska event was a large explosion, caused by an asteroid or comet, which occurred near the Podkamennaya Tunguska River in what is now Krasnoyarsk Krai, Russia, at about 07:14 KRAT (00:14 UT) on June 30 [O.S. June 17], 1908.[1][2][3] The explosion occurred at an altitude of 5–10 kilometres (3–6 mi) at 60.886°N, 101.894°E. It is classified as an impact event even though the object is believed to have burst in the air rather than hit the surface.[4] Different studies have yielded widely varying estimates of the impacting object's size, on the order of 60 m (200 ft) to 190 m (620 ft).[5] It is the largest impact event on or near Earth in recorded history.
Since the 1908 event, there have been an estimated 1,000 scholarly papers (mainly in Russian) published on the Tunguska explosion. Many scientists have participated in Tunguska studies: the best known are Leonid Kulik, Yevgeny Krinov, Kirill Florensky, Nikolai Vladimirovich Vasiliev, and Wilhelm Fast.[6] In 2013, a team of researchers led by Victor Kvasnytsya of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine published analysis results of micro-samples from a peat bog near the blast epicenter showing fragments that may be of meteoritic origin.[7][8]
Estimates of the energy of the blast range from as low as three to as high as 30 megatons of TNT (between 13 and 130 PJ).[9][10] Most likely it was between 10 and 15 megatons of TNT (42 and 63 PJ),[10] and if so, the energy of the explosion was about 1,000 times greater than that of the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima, Japan; roughly equal to that of the United States' Castle Bravo ground-based thermonuclear test detonation on March 1, 1954; and about two-fifths that of the Soviet Union's later Tsar Bomba (the largest nuclear weapon ever detonated).[11]
It is estimated that the Tunguska explosion knocked down some 80 million trees over an area of 2,150 square kilometres (830 sq mi), and that the shock wave from the blast would have measured 5.0 on the Richter scale. An explosion of this magnitude would be capable of destroying a large metropolitan area,[12] but due to the remoteness of the location, no fatalities were documented. This event has helped to spark discussion of asteroid impact avoidance.
