Bernard Whitman is a Democratic Party political pollster and strategist in the United States. He makes regular appearances on Fox News,^[1] and has appeared as a commentator and strategist on CNN, MSNBC and CNBC.^[2]

He has been a pollster to political candidates such as Bill Clinton^[3] and Michael Bloomberg,^[4] as well as international clients.^[5][6]

Bernard's commentary and opinions on current political topics have been covered by national media outlets, and he regularly appears on Fox News to debate conservative commentators.^[7] He is also a strong supporter of marriage equality, and has written opinion columns^[8] and appeared on major news networks to advocate his position.^[9]

Whitman is the President and founder of Whitman Insight Strategies, a strategic consulting firm that conducts polls and market research to advise corporations, political leaders, and issue-advocacy organizations.^[10]

He is an alumnus of Brown University, and served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Senegal, West Africa.^[11]

Simon O. Sinek (born October 9, 1973) is an author and best known for developing "The Golden Circle" and popularizing a concept of human motivation.^[1][2][3] He joined the RAND Corporation in 2010 as an adjunct staff member, where he advises on matters of military innovation and planning. His first TEDx Talk on "How Great Leaders Inspire Action" is the 19th most viewed video on TED.com.^[4] His book on the same subject, "Start With Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action," (2009) delves into a naturally occurring pattern, grounded in the biology of human decision-making, that explains why we are inspired by some people, leaders, messages and organizations over others.

Sinek was born in Wimbledon, England; at a young age he moved to Johannesburg, South Africa, then to London, then to Hong Kong, before settling in New Jersey. He earned a BA degree in cultural anthropology from Brandeis University; he attended City University in London with the intention of becoming a barrister, but left law school to go into advertising.

He moved to New York and joined Euro/RSCG, an ad agency, where he worked on the MCI account. He then joined Ogilvy & Mather, and was later recruited back to Euro/RSCG, where he worked on accounts for Oppenheimer Funds, MCI, NASDAQ and DISH Network. In 2002, he started his own company, Sinek Partners. ^[2]

He has appeared on MSNBC^[5] and Marketplace.^[6]

In October 2009, he released his book “Start with Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action” , and in December 2011, the book topped the list of best sellers for corporate America according to 800-CEO-READ.^[7]

Neil Geoffrey Turok (born 1958 in Johannesburg, South Africa) is the Director of Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics.^[1] He is the son of Mary and Ben Turok, activists in the anti-apartheid movement and the African National Congress.

After graduating from Churchill College, Cambridge, Turok gained his doctorate from Imperial College, London, under the supervision of Professor David Olive, one of the inventors of superstring theory. After a postdoctoral post at Santa Barbara, he was an associate scientist at Fermilab, Chicago. In 1992 he was awarded the Maxwell medal of the Institute of Physics for his contributions to theoretical physics. In 1994 he was appointed Professor of Physics at Princeton University, then held the Chair of Mathematical Physics at the University of Cambridge starting in 1997. He was appointed Director of the Perimeter Institute in 2008.

Turok has worked in a number of areas of mathematical physics and early universe physics, focusing on observational tests of fundamental physics in cosmology. In the early 1990s, his group showed how the polarisation and temperature anisotropies of the cosmic background radiation would be correlated, a prediction which has been confirmed in detail by recent precision measurements by the WMAP spacecraft. They also developed a key test for the presence of a cosmological constant, also recently confirmed. Turok and collaborators developed the theory of open inflation. With Stephen Hawking, he later developed the so-called Hawking-Turok instanton solutions which, according to the no-boundary proposal of Hawking and James Hartle, can describe the birth of an inflationary universe.

Most recently, with Paul Steinhardt at Princeton, Turok has been developing a cyclic model for the universe, in which the big bang is explained as a collision between two "brane-worlds" in M theory. The predictions of this model are in agreement with current cosmological data, but there are interesting differences with the predictions of cosmological inflation which will be probed by future experiments (probably by Planck (spacecraft)). In 2006, Steinhardt and Turok showed how the cyclic model could naturally incorporate a mechanism for relaxing the cosmological constant to very small values, consistent with current observations. Steinhardt and Turok co-authored the recent popular science book "Endless Universe".

In 2003, Turok founded the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences in Muizenberg, a postgraduate educational centre supporting the development of mathematics and science across the African continent.

Awards and honors[link]

He was awarded the 2008 TED Prize for his work in mathematical physics and in establishing the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences in Muizenberg.^[2] He also received a "Most Innovative People Award," for Social Innovation, at the World Summit on Innovation and Entrepreneurship (WSIE) in 2008.^[3]

On May 9, 2008 Mike Lazaridis announced that Turok would become the new Executive Director of the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics starting on October 1, 2008.

In 2010 Turok received a prize from the World Innovation Summit for Education in Qatar^[4] and an award from the South African Mathematical Society.^[5] In 2011 Turok received an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Ottawa.^[6]

On November 3, 2011 Turok was selected to deliver the Massey Lectures for the 2012 season. This honor involves five separate lectures to be delivered in various locations across Canada in October 2012, aired on CBC's Ideas (radio show) shortly thereafter. The prestigious Massey Lectures have become an annual highlight of Canada's national intellectual life over the past 50 years.^[7]

David Welch Pogue^[1] (born March 9, 1963) is an American technology writer and TV science host. He is a personal technology columnist for the New York Times, an Emmy-winning tech correspondent for CBS News Sunday Morning, and a columnist for Scientific American. He is also the host of NOVA ScienceNow on PBS and was the host of the NOVA specials Making Stuff in 2011^[2] and Hunting the Elements in 2012.^[3] Pogue has written or co-written seven books in the For Dummies series (including Macintosh computers, magic, opera, and classical music). In 1999, he launched his own series of computer how-to books called the Missing Manual series, which now includes over 100 titles covering a variety of Macintosh and Windows operating systems and applications. Among the dozens of books Pogue has authored is The World According to Twitter (2009), written in collaboration with around 500,000 of his Twitter followers.

Early life[link]

Pogue was born in Shaker Heights, Ohio, the son of Richard Welch Pogue, an attorney and former Managing Partner at Jones, Day, Reavis & Pogue, and Patricia Ruth (née Raney).^[4] He is a grandson of aviation attorney L.Welch Pogue and Mary Ellen Edgerton. He is also a great nephew of Harold Eugene "Doc" Edgerton, a professor of electrical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and credited with transforming the stroboscope from an obscure laboratory instrument into a common device.^[5]

He graduated from Yale University in 1985, summa cum laude with Distinction in Music.^[6] He spent ten years working in New York, for a time in the office of Music Theatre International and also intermittently as a Broadway musical conductor. On August 29, 2007 he received an Honorary Degree (Doctor of Music) from Shenandoah Conservatory of Shenandoah University in Winchester, Virginia.

Pogue wrote for Macworld Magazine from 1988-2000. His back-page column was called The Desktop Critic. Pogue got his start writing books when Macworld-owner IDG asked him to write Macs for Dummies to follow on the success of the first ...for Dummies book, DOS for Dummies, written by Dan Gookin.^[6]

Since November 2000, Pogue has served as the The New York Times personal-tech columnist; his column, "State of the Art," appears each Thursday on the front page of the Business section. He also writes "From the Desk of David Pogue," a tech-related opinion column that is sent to readers by e-mail. He also maintains a blog at nytimes.com called Pogue's Posts.

From 2007 to 2011, Pogue appeared on CNBC's Power Lunch in a taped, three-minute comic tech review, which then appeared on the New York Times website, nytimes.com, as well as iTunes, YouTube, TiVo, and JetBlue.

In 2007, the HD Theater and Science channels aired his six-episode series, It's All Geek to Me, a how-to show about consumer technology.

He hosted a four-part PBS NOVA miniseries about materials science called Making Stuff, which aired on four consecutive Wednesdays starting January 19, 2011 on PBS.^[2] It was followed by a two-hour special about the periodic table, Hunting the Elements, which aired April 4, 2012.^[3]

He also writes and hosts several segments each year for CBS News Sunday Morning.

Pogue is a frequent speaker at educational and government conferences, addressing such topics as disruptive technology, social media, digital photography, and why products fail.^[7] He has performed twice at TED, a conference in Monterey, CA: in 2006, a 20-minute talk about simplicity; and in 2007, a medley of high-tech song parodies at the piano (or, as Pogue joked, "a tedley,").^[8] In 2008, he performed at the EG conference, also in Monterey, talking about cellphones, the tricks they can be made to do, and how the phones are often better than the companies that market them.

Consumer advocacy[link]

In his New York Times columns and blog posts, Pogue has launched several high-profile consumer advocacy initiatives. His campaigns have caused corporations to change practices and marketing claims that Pogue said were unfair or misleading.

In July 2009, Pogue launched “Take Back the Beep.”^[9] The campaign was designed to raise consumer awareness about American cellphone carriers’ mandatory 15-second voice mail instructions. Pogue wrote that the instructions are unnecessary, as most everyone knows “what to do at the beep.”^[9] However, because consumers can’t easily turn the instructions off (if at all), the instructions eat into consumers’ voice plan minutes. “I calculated that if Verizon’s 87 million customers leave or check messages twice each business day, that comes out to $750 million of air time a year — your money and your time, listening to pointless instructions over and over again.”^[10]

Pogue explained how consumers could bypass the voice mail instructions, encouraged readers to complain about the practice to their carriers, and provided links where they could file complaints.^[11] Other media outlets reported on the “Take Back the Beep” campaign, including radio stations and blogs such as Gizmodo, Engadget, The Consumerist, and Technologizer.^[11] As a result of the “Take Back the Beep” campaign, AT&T shortened its voicemail instructions to eight seconds down from 12 or 15, though no other carriers followed suit^[12] and Verizon Wireless didn’t respond to the campaign.^[13]

In November 2009, Pogue reported on a Verizon customer’s complaint that the wireless carrier charged $1.99 a pop for “bogus data downloads,” a practice validated by another reader who said he works for Verizon.^[14] The charge resulted whenever a Verizon customer touched the up-arrow key on some Verizon phones. The key is easy to accidentally hit and is preprogrammed by Verizon to launch the mobile Web, causing the consumer to incur a $1.99 data charge each time the key is pressed.^[14]

As a result of Pogue’s reportage, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) asked Verizon to explain the data charge.^[15] In October 2010, in response to the FCC inquiry, Verizon agreed to pay up to $90 million in refunds to 15 million customers “wrongly charged for data sessions or Internet use,” one of the largest refunds by a telecommunications company.^[16]

In January 2010, Pogue reported that Barnes & Noble claimed its Nook e-reader weighed 11.2 ounces, though Pogue found it weighed 12.1 ounces.^[17] He wrote that the discrepancy was “a rather important fib in a product that you have to hold in your hand for hours at a time.”^[18] Barnes & Noble claimed that “higher than anticipated demand” for the Nook created “minor variances in the manufacturing process” resulting in a “marginal weight difference…making Nook 12.1 ounces.”^[17] The company said it would update all references to the weight.^[17]

Pogue took Barnes & Noble to task again in November 2011 for claiming that its Nook Color Tablet allowed users to view movies and TV shows in high definition.^[18] However, the device’s screen resolution is 1,024 x 600 pixels, below the lowest-quality HD format of 720p, which has a screen resolution of 1,280 x 720 pixels.^[18] In response, Barnes & Noble agreed that consumers might be misled by the HD video claims and eliminated nine such references from its Web site^[19] and from its marketing literature.

In 2004, Pogue won a Business Emmy as the correspondent for two CBS News Sunday Morning stories about Google and spam. Pogue received the award for taking “complex technological applications such as Google or Spam and (making) them comprehensible to the ordinary, non-technophile viewer.”^[20]

Shenandoah Conservatory awarded Pogue an honorary doctorate in music in 2007 for his “lifelong interests (that) have explored the boundary, the interface, between classical music in performance and computer applications.”^[21]

In 2008, Pogue received a Society of Business Editors and Writers Best in Business Journalism award for his New York Times video "The iPhone Challenge: Keep it Quiet."^[22]

On May 5, 2009, Pogue won two Webby Awards. His New York Times online video series “was the only winner in multiple categories, earning nods for Best Reality/Variety Host and Technology.”^[23]

His New York Times blog “Pogue’s Posts” received the 2010 Gerald Loeb Award for Online Commentary & Blogging.^[24]

On Feb. 3, 2011, Pogue became the second winner of the “Golden Mouth Organ” award on The Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson. Pogue received the award for being only the second person on the show who, when presented with a harmonica, could actually play it.^[25]

Controversy[link]

In a 2005 New York Times review of a hard drive recovery service, Pogue noted that the service, which can cost from $500 to $2,700, was provided to him at no charge for the purposes of the review;^[26] but when describing the service for National Public Radio's Morning Edition program on September 12, 2005,^[27] he neglected to mention this. NPR's Vice President of News Bill Marimow later stated that NPR should have either not aired the review or paid for the services itself.^[27] Ultimately, the Times paid for the service.^[26]

In September 2009, Pogue’s New York Times review of the Snow Leopard Macintosh operating system, a product for which he had also authored a Missing Manual book, was the subject of a column by The Times’ Public Editor Clark Hoyt.^[28] Hoyt wrote that Pogue’s “multiple interests and loyalties raise interesting ethical issues."^[28] Of three ethicists Hoyt consulted, each agreed Pogue's position created a "clear conflict of interest" and placed the paper on "tricky ethical terrain." In response, Pogue posted a statement of ethics on his Times Topics page^[29] and a disclosure was added to his Snow Leopard review on The Times’ web site.^[28]

In June 2011, Pogue gave a presentation at the Media Relations Summit sponsored by Ragan Communications in which he offered advice to PR professionals on how to successfully pitch him.^[30] Arthur S. Brisbane, The New York Times’ reader representative, subsequently wrote that the paper’s ethics policy states staff members and freelancers on assignment “may not advise individuals or organizations how to deal successfully with the news media.”^[30] Though Pogue is not a Times staff member and was not on assignment, an internal review determined that his presentation wasn’t appropriate.^[30] In an email to Brisbane about the matter, Pogue wrote that in the future, “my speaking agent will now present every offer to my (Times) editor and me simultaneously.”^[30]
