Originally broadcast on BBC Match of the Day, with commentary provided by Barry Davies, the uploaded footage is of Sky TV's Bobby Charlton's Football Scrapbook, presented by Dickie Davies with contributions from Bobby Charlton and studio guest, former Wolves midfielder Kenny Hibbitt. The 1975-76 season ended with Wolves relegated from the First Division and with it came the inevitable dismissal of manager Bill McGarry. However, there were a number of matches throughout that season that highlighted the quality of the Wolves team, including five-goal thrashings of Sheffield United, Burnley and Newcastle United together with an impressive FA Cup run that ended against eventual finalists Manchester United at the quarter-final stage (http://youtu.be/R-extKpMDoI). For their match against Gordon Lee's Newcastle, Wolves displayed attacking qualities that, unfortunately, proved so spasmodic for much of that particular season. Centre-forward John Richards was typically prolific with a second half hat-trick against Newcastle that formed part of an impressive 25 league and cup goals for Wolves. McGarry, though, had yet to find a strike partner to compliment Richards following the retirement of Derek Dougan at the end of the previous season and, in addition, he was unable to suitably replace the creative wing play of Dave Wagstaffe. A profligate defence was a further significant factor in Wolves' relegation that season, with 68 goals conceded in total. Ahead of their match at Molineux and with just weeks of the season remaining, Wolves occupied a relegation spot in 20th position, 2 points behind Birmingham City and potential safety in 19th. Newcastle, having defeated Wolves 5-1 at St James' Park earlier in the season, were 14th in the league and boasted one of the finest English centre-forwards of the period in Malcolm Macdonald. 'Supermac' ended the campaign with 24 league and cup goals before being transferred to Arsenal at the end of the season.

The season was also a personal success for Wolves striker John Richards. His 36 League and Cup goals were justifiably rewarded with a cap for England at the end of the season. Richards had formed a highly successful partnership with Derek Dougan and 'The Doog' contributed 17 league and cup goals for the season. The Wolves strikers were supported by an extremely capable midfield, led by inspirational captain Mike Bailey, with the highly efficient Jim McCalliog as Bailey's partner in the centre of midfield and the creative talents of left winger Dave Wagstaffe and Kenny Hibbitt on the opposite flank. Wolves were fortunate to have able cover in reserve in Barry Powell, the versatile Alan Sunderland and the enigmatic Danny Hegan. For the match against Coventry, full-back Bernard Shaw was selected in the central midfield position usually occupied by Mike Bailey or Danny Hegan, but otherwise Wolves were at full strength. Derek Parkin had returned to the side, in his accustomed left-back position, in mid-February 1973 following a six month lay-off with a virus. In reaching the quarter-final, Wolves had defeated Manchester United, Bristol City and Millwall and for their clash against near-neighbours Coventry an attendance of 50,106 were present - the last time Molineux hosted a 50,000 crowd or more. Coventry, managed by Joe Mercer, had defeated Leyton Orient, Grimsby Town and Hull City to progress to the FA Cup Quarter-final. At the time of their match against Wolves, Coventry were in a comfortable 10th position in the First Division just a few points behind Wolves in 6th. However, following their FA Cup defeat by Wolves, Coventry won just once more in the league and slumped to a final position of 19th. Included in their team that faced Wolves at Molineux were Brian Alderson, top scorer for Coventry with 17 goals that particular season, and midfielders Tommy Hutchison, Willie Carr and Dennis Mortimer. Carr joined Wolves for an £80,000 fee almost two years later and would prove to be a popular and extremely accomplished player over several seasons in the gold and black. Second half highlights from the First Division match between Wolves and Manchester United at Molineux on 6th October 1973. In the weeks prior to their match against Manchester United, Wolves began the 1973-74 season by winning their opening two matches at home to Norwich City and Sheffield United, but then failed to record a single victory from their following seven matches. It was a grim run of results for Wolves that left Bill McGarry's team in a lowly 19th position in the league, just one point above relegation. Part of the problem was that striker John Richards endured a barren start to the season, going ten league matches without registering a goal. During Richards' worrying goal drought, his strike partner Derek Dougan and midfielder Jim McCalliog scored all twelve of Wolves' league goals between them - including both goals in the defeat of Manchester United. In March 1974, McCalliog was transferred to United following almost five seasons of fine service in the Wolves midfield. Wolves ultimately regained their form in the league from mid-late November. An impressive 3-1 win at Tottenham Hotspur (http://youtu.be/ytabzYFrdmA) began a revival in results over the remainder of the season that enabled Wolves to haul themselves well clear of relegation with a final league position of 12th. Most memorably, Wolves defeated Manchester City in the League Cup Final on 2nd March 1974. Manchester United were similarly in need of points from their match at Molineux after an unconvincing start to the season had left Tommy Docherty's team in a very modest 14th position. Their previous two matches at Leeds United and at home to Liverpool had produced creditable draws in each, but the fact that both matches ended goalless also highlighted United's overriding problem - a severe lack of goals. It proved to be a prime reason for their eventual relegation that season, as a paltry total of 38 league goals would testify, with Sammy McIlroy finishing as United's top scorer with just 6 goals.
