The 1987–88 season was the 120th season of competitive football in England.
Liverpool won the league title with a comfortable nine-point margin and just two defeats all season. Their key players were two new signings – winger John Barnes and forward Peter Beardsley, John Aldridge scored 26 league goals and helped defy any doubts that people might have had as to whether Liverpool could challenge for honours after Ian Rush's departure to Juventus. Second in the league were Manchester United, rejuvenated under Alex Ferguson – who had bought some impressive new players including Brian McClair and Steve Bruce.
The first relegation places went to Watford and Oxford United, who both lost far too many games and picked up far too few points to have any realistic hope of avoiding relegation. Next to go down were Portsmouth, whose First Division comeback lasted just one season. Chelsea then became the first top division club in 90 years to lose their status after playoffs. They lost to Second Division Middlesbrough in the playoff final and surrendered their First Division place to the Teessiders.
Association football is the national sport in the United Kingdom, where the first modern set of rules for the code were established in 1863, which were a major influence on the development of the modern Laws of the Game. With over 40,000 association football clubs, England has more clubs involved in the code than any other country as well as the world's first club (Sheffield F.C.), the world's oldest professional association football club (Notts County F.C), the oldest national governing body (the Football Association), the first national team, the oldest national knockout competition (the FA Cup) and the oldest national league (the Football League). Today the UK's top domestic league, the Premier League, is one of the most popular and richest sports leagues in the world.
The England National Football Team is one of only 8 teams to win the World Cup in 1966. A total of five English club teams have won the UEFA Champions League (European Cup).
Manchester United Football Club is a professional football club based in Old Trafford, Greater Manchester, England, that competes in the Premier League, the top flight of English football. Founded as Newton Heath LYR Football Club in 1878, the club changed its name to Manchester United in 1902 and moved to Old Trafford in 1910.
Manchester United have won 20 league titles, the most of any English club, 11 FA Cups, four League Cups and a record 20 FA Community Shields. The club has also won three European Cups, one UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, one UEFA Super Cup, one Intercontinental Cup and one FIFA Club World Cup. In 1998–99, the club became the first in the history of English football to achieve the treble of the Premier League, the FA Cup and the UEFA Champions League.
The 1958 Munich air disaster claimed the lives of eight players. In 1968, under the management of Matt Busby, Manchester United became the first English football club to win the European Cup. Alex Ferguson won 38 trophies, including 13 Premier League titles, 5 FA Cups and 2 UEFA Champions Leagues, between 1986 and 2013, when he announced his retirement. Louis van Gaal is the club's current manager after Ferguson's successor David Moyes was sacked after only 10 months in charge.
Nottingham Forest Football Club is an football club in Nottinghamshire, England, which plays in the Football League Championship, the second tier of English football. The club, often referred to as Forest, have played home matches at the City Ground, West Bridgford, since 1898.
Founded in 1865, Forest were founder members of the Football Alliance in 1889 and joined the Football League in 1892. Forest won the FA Cup in 1898 and 1959. Their most successful period was under the management of Brian Clough between 1975 and 1993, winning the League, back to back European Cups, four League Cups and two Full Members Cups. The club has been outside the Premier League since 1999.
Nottingham Forest F.C. was founded in 1865 by a group of Bandy and Shinty players, as Nottingham Forest Football and Bandy Club shortly after their neighbours Notts County, thought to be the world's oldest surviving professional association football club, in 1862. They joined the Football Alliance in 1889 and won the competition in 1892. They then entered to The Football League. In 1890, Forest moved to the Town Ground, playing in the first ever match to use goal nets.

First Division, April, 1988 "The tables were turned in 1988 with United trailing Liverpool and the title race entering its final phase. 11 points adrift, victory was vital for a United side still harbouring hopes of league success. Bryan Robson put the visitors ahead to give them hope but a devastating 10-minute spell either side of half-time had Liverpool in a 3-1 lead. Peter Beardsley (pictured), Gary Gillespie and Steve McMahon were the scorers for Kenny Dalglish's side. Although United refused to lay down, with Robson scoring his second and then Gordon Strachan setting up a tense finale with an equaliser 12 minutes from time which he celebrated by pretending to enjoy a cigar in front of irrate Liverpool fans." Football League Division 1, 31st October 1987, The Baseball Ground, Derby
The contenders for the 1987-88 Match of the Day Goal of the Season, won by Liverpool's John Aldridge for his FA Cup semi-final volley against Nottingham Forest. Not hard to spot the running theme with the other contenders from this year as Liverpool (probably uniquely) monopolised the shortlist with some tremendous goals by the likes of Peter Beardsley, John Barnes and Steve McMahon.

English Cup Final 1987-88 Wimbledon Liverpool
Only one goal scored, but this was a fantastic match. At times, the football was dazzling, particularly from John Barnes. Despite their dominance of English football in the 1980s, Liverpool's record against Manchester United was pretty poor - prior to this game, they had only beaten their arch-rivals once in 17 league meetings during that decade. Martin Tyler commentates.

Walking down the street in the city
Now I am one of the boys, looking pretty
And people turn their heads as I walk by
And girls says to me; if you don’t want me I must die
But I ignore them, I aint got the time
I keep on walking as horny girls stand in line
‘Cause I know they are after my shoes
My tiny red dr. martens boots
I know, I know
Everybody wants my dr. martens boots
Went into a pub to get a beer
When everybody stopped talking and started to stare
The pub owner said; you’ll get anything for free
But I know what he wanted out of me
I can’t just give away my new air wear
Then I could go around naked for what I care
My martens is the only thing I wear
My martens is the only thing I hold dear
