A pesar de intentarlo hasta el final, el colombiano Esteban Chaves no pudo conservar los 44 segundos de diferencia que lo tenían vistiendo la maglia rosa que acredita al líder y que tenían al país con la esperanza de conseguir por segunda vez en la historia un Giro de Italia.
Los 134 kilómetros de la penúltima etapa resultaron decisivos. Luego de un feroz ataque sobre el final, el local Vincenzo Nibali le sacó más de un minuto y medio a Chaves y se hizo al liderato a falta de una sola etapa.
La etapa entre Guillestre y Sant’Anna di Vinadio dejó como ganador al estonio Rein Taaramae (Katusha) y tuvo como protagonista al también colombiano Darwin Atapuma (BMC) que finalizó segundo y se ubicó noveno en la clasificación general.
Tres colombianos se ubicaron en el top 10 de la clasificación general: Esteban Chaves (segundo), Rigoberto Urán (séptimo) y Darwin Atapuma (noveno).
Salvo sorpresa mayúscula en el paseo triunfal en Turín, Nibali se coronará por segunda vez en la ronda italiana, que ya ganó en 2013, con su cuarta ‘grande’ tras la Vuelta a España de 2010 y el Tour de Francia en 2014.
Este domingo el Giro cerrará su 99ª edición con la disputa de la última etapa, entre Cuneo y Turín, de 163 kilómetros y con un perfil muy plano.

General classification in the Giro d'Italia
The general classification in the Giro d'Italia is the most important classification of the Giro d'Italia, which determines who is the overall winner. It is therefore considered more important than secondary classifications as the points classification or the mountains classification.
Since 1931, the leader of the general classification is identified by a pink jersey (Italian: maglia rosa [ˈmaʎʎa ˈrɔza]).
In the first editions of the Giro d'Italia, a points system was used for the calculation of the general classification, but since 1914 a time system is used. All stage results are added together, taking into account time bonuses for high finishes and intermediate sprints, and time penalties for breaking the rules.
The color pink was chosen because La Gazzetta dello Sport, the sports newspaper that created the Giro, was printed on pink paper. In comparison, the leader of the general classification in the Tour de France is awarded a yellow jersey, which originally corresponds with the yellow newsprint of L'Auto, the newspaper that created the Tour de France.

Giro d'Italia
The Giro d'Italia (Italian pronunciation: [ˈdʒiːro diˈtaːlja]; English: Tour of Italy) is an annual stage race bicycle race primarily held in Italy, while also occasionally passing through nearby countries. The race was first organized in 1909 to increase sales of the newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport; however it is currently run by RCS Sport. The race has been held annually since its first edition in 1909, except when it was stopped for the two world wars. As the Giro gained prominence and popularity the race was lengthened, and the peloton expanded from primarily Italian participation to riders from all over the world. The Giro is a UCI World Tour event, which means that the teams that compete in the race are mostly UCI Proteams, with the exception of the teams that the organizers can invite.
Along with the Tour de France and Vuelta a España, the Giro makes up cycling's prestigious three-week-long Grand Tours. The Giro is usually held during late May and early June. While the route changes each year, the format of the race stays the same, with the appearance of at least two time trials, and a passage through the mountains of the Alps, including the Dolomites. Like the other Grand Tours, the modern editions of the Giro d'Italia normally consist of 21 day-long segments (stages) over a 23-day period that includes 2 rest days.

Vincenzo Nibali
Vincenzo Nibali (Italian pronunciation: [vinˈtʃɛntso ˈniːbali]; born 14 November 1984) is an Italian professional road bicycle racer, considered one of the strongest stage race riders in the world today. He rides for the Kazakh UCI ProTeam Astana.
Born near the Strait of Messina, his nickname is the "Shark of the Strait", "the Shark of Messina" or simply "The Shark". His first major win came at the 2006 GP Ouest-France, a World class race. However, experts such as Michele Bartoli have said Nibali is most suited to competing in multi-stage races. Excellent descender and bike handler (one of the finest in the peloton), very good climber and classy time trialist, Nibali is an all-rounder, his biggest wins are the 2010 Vuelta a España, the 2013 Giro d'Italia, and the 2014 Tour de France, making him one of six cyclists who have won the three Grand Tours in their career. He has also won the 2012 and 2013 editions of the Tirreno–Adriatico stage race. The italian cyclist is mostly a stage racer, but he's a good performer in classic cycle races as well, having won the 2014 and 2015 editions of the Italian National Road Race Championships, the GP Ouest-France in 2006 and above all a "Monument" of road bicycle racing: the Giro di Lombardia in 2015. He achieved podiums in Liège–Bastogne–Liège and Milan–San Remo.

Esteban Chaves
Johan Esteban Chaves Rubio (born 17 January 1990) is a Colombian professional road bicycle racer who rides for UCI ProTeam Orica–GreenEDGE. Born in Bogotá, Chaves has competed as a professional since the start of the 2012 season, having signed for the Colombia–Coldeportes team as a neo-pro, after three seasons as an amateur with the Colombia es Pasión–Coldeportes team.
Career
As an amateur, Chaves was the winner of the French Tour de l'Avenir race in 2011, a race previously won by five future winners of the Tour de France. Chaves had been part of the breakaway on the first road stage of the race, taking the mountains jersey after the stage. He surrendered that lead to Garikoitz Bravo the next day, but reclaimed the lead on the third stage, having led the field over the Grand Ballon. Bravo took the lead again after the fourth stage until the end of the race, but Chaves moved into contention for the overall honours with several top-ten stage finishes, and trailed race leader David Boily by seven seconds before the final stage, in Alba, Italy. Chaves was part of a four-rider breakaway that moved clear of the field after the penultimate climb, and although he was beaten to the line by Warren Barguil and Mattia Cattaneo, Chaves' third place coupled with a 24-second time gap to the field, allowed him to win the race by 17 seconds.

A pesar de intentarlo hasta el final, el colombiano Esteban Chaves no pudo conservar los 44 segundos de diferencia que lo tenían vistiendo la maglia rosa que acredita al líder y que tenían al país con la esperanza de conseguir por segunda vez en la historia un Giro de Italia. Los 134 kilómetros de la penúltima etapa resultaron decisivos. Luego de un feroz ataque sobre el final, el local Vincenzo Nibali le sacó más de un minuto y medio a Chaves y se hizo al liderato a falta de una sola etapa. A pesar de intentarlo hasta el final, el colombiano Esteban Chaves no pudo conservar los 44 segundos de diferencia que lo tenían vistiendo la maglia rosa que acredita al líder y que tenían al país con la esperanza de conseguir por segunda vez en la historia un Giro de Italia.
Los 134 kilómetros de la penúltima etapa resultaron decisivos. Luego de un feroz ataque sobre el final, el local Vincenzo Nibali le sacó más de un minuto y medio a Chaves y se hizo al liderato a falta de una sola etapa.
La etapa entre Guillestre y Sant’Anna di Vinadio dejó como ganador al estonio Rein Taaramae (Katusha) y tuvo como protagonista al también colombiano Darwin Atapuma (BMC) que finalizó segundo y se ubicó noveno en la clasificación general.
Tres colombianos se ubicaron en el top 10 de la clasificación general: Esteban Chaves (segundo), Rigoberto Urán (séptimo) y Darwin Atapuma (noveno).
Salvo sorpresa mayúscula en el paseo triunfal en Turín, Nibali se coronará por segunda vez en la ronda italiana, que ya ganó en 2013, con su cuarta ‘grande’ tras la Vuelta a España de 2010 y el Tour de Francia en 2014.
Este domingo el Giro cerrará su 99ª edición con la disputa de la última etapa, entre Cuneo y Turín, de 163 kilómetros y con un perfil muy plano.

A pesar de intentarlo hasta el final, el colombiano Esteban Chaves no pudo conservar los 44 segundos de diferencia que lo tenían vistiendo la maglia rosa que acredita al líder y que tenían al país con la esperanza de conseguir por segunda vez en la historia un Giro de Italia.
Los 134 kilómetros de la penúltima etapa resultaron decisivos. Luego de un feroz ataque sobre el final, el local Vincenzo Nibali le sacó más de un minuto y medio a Chaves y se hizo al liderato a falta de una sola etapa.
La etapa entre Guillestre y Sant’Anna di Vinadio dejó como ganador al estonio Rein Taaramae (Katusha) y tuvo como protagonista al también colombiano Darwin Atapuma (BMC) que finalizó segundo y se ubicó noveno en la clasificación general.
Tres colombianos se ubicaron en el top 10 de la clasificación general: Esteban Chaves (segundo), Rigoberto Urán (séptimo) y Darwin Atapuma (noveno).
Salvo sorpresa mayúscula en el paseo triunfal en Turín, Nibali se coronará por segunda vez en la ronda italiana, que ya ganó en 2013, con su cuarta ‘grande’ tras la Vuelta a España de 2010 y el Tour de Francia en 2014.
Este domingo el Giro cerrará su 99ª edición con la disputa de la última etapa, entre Cuneo y Turín, de 163 kilómetros y con un perfil muy plano.
