Claude Cahun
Claude Cahun Born Lucy Schwob in Nantes, she was the niece of writer Marcel Schwob and the great-niece of Orientalist David Léon Cahun. Her mother's mental problems meant that she was brought up by her maternal grandmother, Mathilde Cahun. She began making photographic self-portraits as early as 1912, when she was just eighteen years old, and she continued taking images of herself through the 1930s. Around 1919, she settled on the pseudonym Claude Cahun, intentionally selecting a sexually ambiguous name, after having previously used the names Claude Courlis and Daniel Douglas. During the early twenties, she settled in Paris with her life-long partner and stepsister Suzanne Malherbe. For the rest of their lives together, Cahun and Malherbe (who adopted the pseudonym Marcel Moore) collaborated on various written works, sculptures, photomontages and collages. She published articles and novels, notably in the periodical "Mercure de France", and befriended Henri Michaux, Pierre Morhange and Robert Desnos. Around 1992 she and Malhrbe began holding artists' salons at their home. Among the regulars who would attend were artists Henri Michaux and André Breton and literary entrepeneurs Sylvia Beach and Adrienne Monnier.[1] Throughout her life, she worked on a series of monologues called "Heroines," which was based upon female fairy tale characters and intertwining them with witty comparisons to the contemporary image of women. In 1929, a photograph of her was published in the ...

Claude Cahun

RITA CHAO & The Quests/ NANCY SIT -"HANKY PANKY" (1967)
Love and Let Love! "All You Need Is Love" meant empathy, intimacy, support, selflessness, and spiritual solidarity. These are the tonics to alienation, segregation, hostility, selfishness, and existential emptiness. The expression of love is a sacred act and a spiritual pact. It may be fleeting, maybe only a cherished moment, or perhaps as deep as life is long. But the selfless act of giving of ourselves for another's benefit lifts us into the better angels of our nature. Hate only degrades and destroys. Love nourishes the individual soul and the human species. Without it, we will not survive. 'Love is love and Hate ain't'; it can't be legislated, leveled, or lynched. Let no one put it asunder. This is a tribute to love; it's stirrings, it's courtship, its consumation, its playful dynamics and trusts, its gameplaying, its limitless range. Love is the antidote to all harm; it is the pulsebeat of the human race. Along the way, supporting evidence is given by the Greek poet Sappho; Pompeii murals; 1000-year-old Indian temples; Chinese paintings; Japanese Ukiyo-e woodblock prints; 16th-to-20th century Western paintings by artists Charles Mengin, the School of Fountainebleau, Francis Boucher, Gustav Courbet, Dante Rosetti, Charles Boutibonne, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Aubrey Beardsley, Alphonse Mucha, Franz von Bayros, Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, Gerda Wegener, Claude Cahun, Hannah Hoch, Marie Laurencin, Hannah "Gluck" Gluckstein, Tamara de Lempicka, Maxfield Parrish ...

Narcissus Reflected at The Fruitmarket Gallery
Narcissus Reflected explores both Narcissus and narcissism. Narcissus is the beautiful youth from Greek mythology, turned by the gods into a narcissus flower as punishment for his self-obsession and inability to love anyone other than his own reflection. Narcissism was identified by Sigmund Freud as a passing phase in the development of a 'normal' ego. Narcissus Reflected is a scholarly yet also personal, speculative and eclectic journey into the realm of Narcissus. At its appropriately doubled heart lies Salvador Dalí's painting Metamorphosis of Narcissus (1937) and Narkissos (1976-91) the masterwork of the San-Franciscan artist Jess. Dalí's painting is one of the most famous, most well-travelled and most reproduced works of modern art, although this exhibition offers a rare chance to see the painting alongside the poem Dalí wrote to accompany it, and a wealth of preparatory sketches and other material. Jess's large, hand-drawn collage, by contrast, has never before traveled outside America. This exhibition presents it for the first time together with all the material of its making -- sketches, a pin board with all the collage's sources, and a preparatory notebook. Narcissus Reflected weaves a web of connections around these two great pictures, following the thread of Narcissus through experimental film and photography from the 1920s to the 1960s, winding up in the big, immersive contemporary environments of Yayoi Kusama's Narcissus Garden (1966) and Pippilotti Rist's ...

Lovisa Burfitt Fall 2010 at Fashion Week by Berns in Stockholm The collection is inspired by Claude Cahun and the Garçonne. A homage to an eccentric artist who dressed as a vampire or a sailor, uncensored. A mans waistcoat becomes a dress in black and grey tones, washed out silk, woven wool and velvet. Dark colours in natural fibres. Clothes from a mans wardrobe, shaped into ultra-feminine forms; corsets, wide capes, laced dresses and belts. Cardigan Man, grandfather coats; the Smoking Room comes into its own. La Mode Garçonne: the refined elegance of the unfettered dandy, head held high, looking towards.
