Andrew Lih is an associate professor of journalism at American University in Washington, DC, and author of The Wikipedia Revolution: How a bunch of nobodies created the world's greatest encyclopedia. He is a noted expert in online collaboration and digital news innovation and founded the web-based city guide NY.com in 1994. He has degrees in computer science from Columbia University, where he helped start the School of Journalism's new media program. He is a contributor to the weekly PBS MediaShift podcast and has been a speaker at South by Southwest (SXSW), the Online News Association, Wikimania and Wikisym.
How Wikipedia Solved the Knowledge Gap
Filmed by Ford Fischer and Justin Parker
Edited by Ford Fischer
Wikipedia has created millions of articles in over 200 languages, making it the greatest reference work in the world. But the "encyclopedia that anyone can edit" is even more astonishing in how it fills a human knowledge gap that, until recently, was seen as unsolvable. By organizing and explaining information faster than ever before, it is a persistent, constantly updated, peer-produced, working draft of human history. Andrew Lih explains the implications of solving the gap, and why it's vital for Wikipedia's future survival.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

A conversation with Vox.com editors Melissa Bell and Yuri Victor, sponsored by American University School of Communication in Washington DC and the Online News Association DC chapter. October 23, 2014. Introduction by professor Amy Eisman and Q&A; moderated by Matt Mansfield.
Melissa Bell and Yuri Victor from Vox.com discuss the intersection of editorial and technology at their startup, which has quickly become known for its ambitious product launches.
Melissa, a Vox co-founder, executive editor and senior product manager, and Yuri, senior UX designer, talk about the unique culture that has made Vox nimble as it adds more storytelling tools. Unlike many media companies that delegated web publishing to the IT department, Vox has built a platform from the ground up by iterating with bloggers who know how to tell stories and build communities on the web.

Last year, Facebook honcho Mark Zuckerberg said he wanted Facebook to provide the “best personalized newspaper in the world.” No one really knew what that meant, but now Facebook clearly wields enormous power over what news content is read at various publications. That’s because its News Feed uses algorithms -- adjusted and designed by humans -- that highlights stories that can get an avalanche of traffic. But the process for choosing winners and losers is not transparent, leaving publishers large and small trying to figure out the best way to get notice. In an interview with the NY Times’s Ravi Somaiya, a Facebook engineer, Greg Marra, who is on the team that adjusts the News Feed, said, “We try to explicitly view ourselves as not editors,” he said. “We don’t want to have editorial judgment over the content that’s in your feed.” And NY Time’s David Carr reported that Facebook has been on a “listening tour” with publishers and could offer to host their content on Facebook and split revenues. Will publishers take them up on that offer or remain wary of the social giant? On this week’s podcast, we’ll discuss this with guests Ravi Somaiya from the New York Times and John Herrman from The Awl, along with regulars Andrew Lih from American University and Alex Leo from Newsweek. PBS MediaShift’s Mark Glaser will be hosting, with Fannie Cohen producing.

When Taylor Swift removed her music from Spotify this month many people were surprised. After all, the streaming music service is one of the largest with 37.5 million free users a month and more than 12 million paid users. In an interview with Yahoo!, Swift said she wasn't willing to contribute to streaming services like Spotify that don’t "fairly compensate the writers, producers, artists and creators of this music." But streaming is becoming increasingly important as tech giants such as Apple/Beats and Google/YouTube roll out their own services. Last week, YouTube revealed details of Music Key, which will allow paid subscribers to stream music videos without ads. Of course, Apple had a revelation of its own when it announced a push to bundle its Beats streaming music on the next version of iOS. What’s the future of streaming music and the music industry? How can these services attract more people? We’ll break down the future of streaming music on this week’s podcast with guests Adrianne Jefferies, managing editor of Vice Motherboard; Glenn Peoples, senior editorial analyst for Billboard Magazine; Lucas Shaw, entertainment reporter for Bloomberg; along with regular Andrew Lih from American University. PBS MediaShift’s Mark Glaser will be hosting and Jefferson Yen will be producing.

It's been a rough month for Sony. Especially for Sony Pictures Entertainment's chair Amy Pascal. Following terrorist threats from the hacking group “Guardians of Peace,” the studio has pulled its film “The Interview” from theaters. At the center of all this is a hacker group calling themselves the "Guardians of Peace." But who exactly are they? Yesterday, a U.S. intelligence officials confirmed that the attack were linked to North Korea. Many had suspected that the group held ties to North Korea because of the upcoming Sony film “The Interview,” a Seth Rogen and James Franco comedy where North Korean leader Kim Jong-un’s head literally explodes on-screen.The film revolves around two bungling journalists who are recruited by the CIA to assassinate Jong-un. That’s not the only fallout the studio has had to endure. Earlier this month, Pascal had to apologize for a series of racially charged emails between her and producer Scott Rudin about President Obama that were revealed in a massive hacking attack of the company. Aaron Sorkin, the creator of “The Newsroom” and other TV shows, blasted the press in an New York Times op-ed. His argument was essentially that what's been covered so far is not newsworthy. We'll try to unpack what this attack means for Sony, Hollywood and the media industry at large with special guests Jeff Roberts, technology reporter at Gigaom; and Emily Yoshida, entertainment editor at The Verge; along with regulars Alex Leo, head of audience development for Yahoo; and Andrew Lih at American University. PBS MediaShift’s Mark Glaser will be hosting and Jefferson Yen will be producing.
